It will be the same as this gen. By the end of 2017, 6 teraflops will be a medium PC setup. PC world will have already be at 12 teraflops or more.

Games will not run at 4k60 frames without cutting something on consoles. The jump from 1080/60 to 4k60 is huge and five times the power is not enough when just the rez is 4 times higher (four times 1080p)...

Something is only outdated if it doesn't meet what you personally require. To me the scorpio won't be outdated for a long time becuse i don't need more than 60fps, and well 4k gaming will be fine for a long time to come. I'm not really a 'have to have' person.

Let's be honest here: The default One/PS4, Neo, Scorpio and PC all target a slightly different demographic so it's okay if they all exist with different specs and technology always becomes outdated fast now.

What we have now is still fine by many (most) and going by what we've just seen can still showcase beautiful games allowing all the storytelling elements we've come to expect.

From what we "know" (not much) the Neo sounds like a 1080p/60 kind of upgrade for PS fans that want an even better looking and running version of what we have now and possibly a bit more besides. More VR friendly even and likely will upscale games to 4K (like the Slim apparently will also do--not native but scaling isn't a bad option).

The Scorpio is a higher end 4K/VR friendly, PC alternative from the sound of it though. Some people just do not want a PC and that's cool and this gives what sounds like a high end gaming experience to console owners. It isn't a must but with VR going big and 4K tvs going cheap it's an option that is likely more compelling the later it gets.

They want to say "no one is left behind" but I also expect the Scorpio is a leapfrog technology between now and Next Gen (as in needing new hardware for every game). For the next several years after its launched we will see games on both for sure but once the Next Gen comes out I can see a Scorpio version release and a Next gen version but not what is probably going to be an 8-10 year old Launch One version as the technology difference should be substantial by then.

PC wise... simply put its all about personal choice. Ugrade what you want, when you want and have more options with PC only games as well as Xbox exclusives now. As a multiplatform owner, I like having choices as that's sort of the whole point of it. I'm not scrapping my One just because the games are also on PC but instead getting 2 copies of a game for the price of One. I like being able to just pick up a controller and jumping into the action just as much as playing on PC but consoles still allow a certain ease with them and a complete freedom of even thinking about PC uograde options and also acts as a buffer on upgrading my PC. I'm much less likely to upgrade my PC the first couple years a console comes out for example as new consoles are just as exciting for me and have their own feel to them even though I can technically play the games on PC pretty much the same or sometimes better.

All in all, they all have their place. Scorpio will at some point be "outdated" by a PS5 or something (PC will do it first but again different audience and wants) but whatever) but it's a nice higher end PC alternative come next year. It has me excited but I'm also simply excited for the games I'm getting before then as that is what is most important in the long run.

I don't see consoles being like mobile and have a new flavor of the year or anything but last gen did run long. So instead of having that repeat itself as technology advances we may see leapfrog consoles every 4-5 years again. Fully BC like PC but made for new advances as well (starting with 4K and VR of today).

That won't stay a constant though as after a certain point things will slow down again until an even bigger leap comes along. Scorpio should last plenty and whatever comes after that should basically be a long pause till we no longer use tv/monitors for gaming most often. 1080p is fine by most but 4K unless you're talking a seriously huge screen (CES tech prototype screens) is more than sufficient as a stopgap for consoles to take a breather for a while. Once that happens it will probably not be a big deal til VR screens manage that kind of resolution.

If you don't want to buy the Scorpio guess what YOU DON'T HAVE TO. Nobody is forcing you to buy the damn thing. You'll still get to play the same games as the Scorpio. Yeah they might now look or run as good but your getting the same damn game. Phil Spencer has already stated that the Scorpio is meant for gamers who have invested or will be investing in a 4k tv. It's like some people can't comprehend english. Put it like this, if I'm a pc player and I want to game in 4k then hey I would have to buy the parts that would allow that as well as a 4k monitor BUT if I can't then I'll still get to play the same games as other pc players just not in 4k. Why is this so hard to understand. Stop bitching about it and get over it. If you wanna buy the Scorpio and use it to its full capabilities your going to have to buy a 4ktv. #SIMPLELOGIC

Isn't every technology pretty much outdated on the first year of release...that's why phones and tablet are released almost evey year.

Plus Phil stated that this is a new console or new gen console...its an XBox 1 4.5 which is meant to give the developers more power to make the games they want...let's be real here, the PS4 and XB1 were weak from launch were maxed out in the second year of release.

MS will announce the next gen XBox two or three years from now or for all we know the Scorpio is an upgraded machine which you can just add 10 teraflops to it when needed.

It will be outdated the day it launches.

I'm not sure how I actually feel about this device agnostic approach. I can see how it makes sense from a business point of view. But I'm worried this will hold gameing back as a whole. The focus the last two generations has been on faster framerates and prettier graphics. While real innovations in physics. AI, and animation see much small leaps. If your always having to cater to the lowest denominator how will these other areas grow? The idea around conoles was a walled off garden that developers could play in and push the boundries. Now it's going to become harder especially when you can't zero in on your target. I guess we have no choice in seeing how this plays out, considering both Sony and MS are moving ahead. But things like physics, animation, and a.i. will just creep along.

technology is pretty much outdated upon its release(for better or worse). consoles are pretty much outdated upon their release- that doesn't mean they're not capable of good games. consoles have proven you don't need the highest powered tech in order to have a good gaming experience.

Xbox brand will be irrelevant in the next 2 years.

And the computer you just bought yesterday is outdated tomorrow.

I can't keep up with this spec war.

Just focus on the bloody console and create decent games!

nothing wrong with letting people choose how much they want to spend to upgrade there console. Just like a car. Its better to have the options then be stuck with a outdated box. And people wont have to reason to call it under powered no more

Also cell phone upgrades always suck now days its the same experience you feel no different about it after a day of having your new phone. people are tired of the phone gimmick

Console maker just needs to fully support BC, FC and a lot of gamers fears will be set to rest, they need to communicate future plans to their customers, nobody wants to feel left out or like a sucker for adopting to early into a consoles life cycle.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
