Games can perform better on Xbox One S

Better frame rates and higher resolution are possible on Microsoft's slimmer console

Sonyslave33633d ago

So both xbox gives a boost in performance interesting.

Gazondaily3633d ago

Yeah not bad. Mind you Scorpio is where it's at. Those specs are insane. To think, just last week people were mocking it, saying it couldn't be true. Now its becoming a reality. Pretty crazy

SquidBuck3633d ago

bet it will have the price tag to match.

BossBattle3633d ago Show
its_JEFF3633d ago

@Septic honestly man, none are a reality. None of them showed any screen, any videos, any actual spec sheets. You got a video with some claims. Do you know how often a consoles specs have changed from announcement to release? Not saying that I don't believe that Scorpio won't reach those numbers, it's just that we haven't seen anything yet. Am I wrong?

Sunny_D3633d ago

@bossbattle

Let's not get too fan boyish considering we still don't know what Sony is going to do with NEO. Also, until we see devs taking advantage of the Scorpio, how about you wait and see? Do you want another Power of The Cloud moment? It's been 3 years and yet the Cloud has yet to prove anything.

Gazondaily3633d ago

@jeff and sunny

What are you two saying? That the specs aren't legit? It's due to release next year.

"Let's not get too fan boyish considering we still don't know what Sony is going to do with NEO"

Yeah I think the leaked specs might have caused Sony to do a 180 and reconsider the specs of the Neo. It wouldn't surprise me if they go back to the drawing board on that one.

ziggurcat3633d ago (Edited 3633d ago )

septic, I think people were mocking the idea that it was 10tflops... which is info that came from someone on the misterxmedia website. I never personally read anyone mocking the then rumoured (and still sort of, apart from some info they gave in their video) specs. (edit: what I mean here was the 6tflop rumour, which is now fact)

this new console certainly sounds like it's a beast of a machine, and i'm looking forward to seeing more information on it in the upcoming future - especially the games.

its_JEFF3633d ago

@Sunny_D honestly, that dudes probably been holding in a lot of pent up frustration... let him let it out. He finally get to gloat and shove it in someone else's face. Let him have his happy time.

BossBattle3633d ago

@sunnyd oh yeah the Scorpio will be more powerful than the Neo. All the rumors I've heard about these 2 new consoles have been true so far even tho you guys have downplayed it in denial. The Neo is nowhere touching the Scorpio as far as power. MS only revealed it this soon because they know that it's too late for Sony to do anything at this point. Sony already confirmed the Neo and will be releasing it first. So MS still has the advantage. They're not playing around.

its_JEFF3633d ago

Yo @Septic did you read my comment? or did you just stop after the first few words, huh? I said "I don't doubt that they'll reach it. It jus we have seen anything yet". And like I said, tell me If I'm wrong

Gazondaily3633d ago (Edited 3633d ago )

@Jeff

No we haven't seen the actual box. But your basis for doubt is odd.

What would MS do? Gimp the specs because they suddenly realise its too expensive? It doesn't make sense.

@ziggurcat
"septic, I think people were mocking the idea that it was 10tflops"

Only now am I seeing this mention of 10tflops. I didn't recall this before. 6tflops was already higher than Sony's 4 so I Dunn where the 10 came from.

PizzaSteve3633d ago Show
hirobrotagonist3633d ago

Not sure why people are down voting you, the specs are amazing for a console

donthate3633d ago

Septic:

It is way too late to go back to the drawing board, unless Sony is willing to throw away hundreds of millions. Production of PS4k/Neo APU has already started enmasse. It is way too late to change the silicon now.

The PS4 reveal, gave MS almost a year, and there was nothing MS could do to change that. MS do have time to respond to increase it even more, perhaps even overclock the APU a little to give an extra ompfhhh.

ziggurcat3633d ago

@septic:

here's the 10TF rumour...

http://www.gamespot.com/for...
http://www.bidnessetc.com/6...

I am fairly certain that info came from someone at misterxmedia, and foolishly taken seriously by someone in the media (if I am not mistaken, even eurogamer italy(?) reported on this... http://www.eurogamer.it/art... )

r2oB3633d ago

The Scorpio does sound like a promising console, but it's a no buy for me. I can't see myself buying another Microsoft console. Obviously the choice to buy an Xbox One was mine, but only one of the games I bought it for is not coming to PC (SSO) and that stings me a bit since I already have a pretty capable gaming PC (had it before I bought the Xbox One last year which was before they made their announcements of bringing these exclusives to PC). Quantum Break, Scalebound, and Gears 4 are coming to PC, but these games I will buy for the Xbox One only because I do not want to make the purchase feel like any more of a waste. Objectively, I can't blame Microsoft for wanting more people to play their games; but personally I feel like I wasted money on the Xbox One since I bought it for their exclusives. Therefore I will not get the Scorpio, but instead put that money towards a stronger GPU (higher than 6 Tflops) and perhaps a new CPU which should be relatively less expensive a year and a half from now (assuming a $500 price point). Future Microsoft exclusives I will buy for the PC.

On topic: The Xbox One S is a nice console. More power, smaller, better looking, and $299.

its_JEFF3633d ago (Edited 3633d ago )

@Septic dude, stop being so defensive and stop putting words into my mouth. I never said they would "gimp" it. I just want to see something from the new box! Tell me, what happens when Nvidia debuts a new graphics card? They give specs they show a video of what is "possible" they also give bench marks. All I said was I wanted to see something more than a video of someone telling me what it's gonna be.

Shit if I took everything Sony said as the truth the PS3 should have been the last console I needed to buy, but guess what... it sure wasn't. Super computer on a chip, link PS3's around the world to enhance its power. I just need to see something before I drop the pre-order money! And that's all I gotta say about that, I just bed to see something more than words, it's that simple.

Gazondaily3633d ago

@Jeff

Relax mate. I just said that your basis for doubting the specs made little sense that's all. Yes we need to see everything finalised but I'm not expecting them to go back on the specs. If they do, there will be hell to pay.

Microsoft wouldn't release something as powerful as Scorpio without a purpose. Otherwise, they would just wait a few years and release it as "next gen". I suspect the rumors of them teaming up with Facebook to bring Oculus Rift to the system to be true, which is going to be a really hefty price tag. Question is, are people going to be willing to pay it?

@IAM- "Wtf are you going to play on it? Microsoft has barely any games in the oven"

Its an XONE, likely actual XONE games. Its not a new platform with its own market...

"Scorpio is a concept that they rushed out the door out of sheer desperation" No...its just business.

2 skus makes sense and many were asking for such a set up. It can work and they are correct to do this. With the rumor of Sony making one, MS can't just sit buy and watch their competitor have MORE OPTIONS for consumers.

That is like saying "Don't make large fries, let the other burger place have that option" lol SO its "rushed out the door out of sheer desperation" or the simple concept of business?

Its not "desperation" or an accident that Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts have similar set ups, in coupons, drive ins, menu, promotions etc. They are rivals, their consumers CRAVE THE SAME THINGS! THUS, if Sony is making an upgrade, MS must make one too.

It idiotic not to, basically saying just do nothing while another company offers more features.

Would you tell that to Blockbuster while they were at war with Netflix?

To not offer a similar feature, is to say you don't value you're consumers as much as your competitor.

Based on the logic of business, this must happen for both as I can't even see why it would ever benefit MS or Sony to NOT go down the same paths if consumers are asking for it.

Why would they let one another have a feature or model that offers so much value and choice and not do the same?

Sharky2313632d ago

@boss battle

The ps4 does just fine in frame rate and resolution! It does ultimately come down to the games! That's really a preference! If you like Microsoft games then your gonna obviously side with Xbox. If you like Sony's first party studio games then your gonna side with PlayStation! This battle will never be won!

BossBattle3633d ago (Edited 3633d ago )

@squidbuck well the price won't be bad because I feel MS will sell it at a loss. And even tho the Scorpio's GPU (6 teraflops) is comparable to nvidia 1070 GTX (6.5 teraflops) in performance, the 1070 is only $379. Scorpio's GPUs will be cheaper because it's made by AMD. A Scorpio could be $500-600.

RosweeSon3633d ago

Yeah Microsoft often sell things at a loss. Not gonna happen.

BLAKHOODe3632d ago (Edited 3632d ago )

@BossBattle, I think Sony has a huge advantage over Microsoft. I truly believe Scorpio's purpose will be to support the Oculus Rift and if that's the case, Microsoft expects gamers to fork out big money for the Scorpio, as well as the Oculus Rift. In the meantime, Sony has already established a huge install base with it's PS4, which is already set to support it's PSVR. So the only thing gamers have to worry about, is forking out $400 for a PSVR. Neo will likely just boost this experience and will be a high-end, optional, upgrade that Sony will officially unveil later, AFTER PSVR releases. By the time Scorpio releases, the PSVR will already be in our homes. So, it's going to be a helluva task for Microsoft to convince people to not only switch brands, but to spend a LOT more money for a premium VR experience.

DafunkyRebel3632d ago

sadly their line up of games sucks, I haven't touch my xbox in a while cause there nothing interesting to play

_-EDMIX-_3632d ago

Well that has been the case for MOST sku upgrades.

The PS3 slim and Elite 360 both had very slight improvements, as did the PSONE revision and PS2 slim. Most revisions have slight improvements in performance.

Maybe they got rid of the esram and swapped the ddr3 for GDDR5.

magiciandude3633d ago

Could be. They could also clocked the CPU and/or GPU higher since a die shrink would allow that while producing less heat. Anyway, thanks Rookie for the find!

ULTp0ltergeist3633d ago

I doubt that, heck the Scorpio surprisingly is still an SoC. So I think eSRAM is still the main focal point, just increased specs.

Bruh3633d ago

It's got a dGPU set up, why on earth would it still need the ESRAM?

ULTp0ltergeist3632d ago

@Bruh
Don't know if it has a dGPU unless you know something I don't. But it was stated in the reveal that it's a SoC, hence it's still uses eSRAM. There is nothing wrong with eSRAM, it was lacking specs that's all. eSRAM is a great technology for huge high-quality textures.

babadivad3632d ago (Edited 3632d ago )

If what they showed is true, it looks like GDDR memory.

There is clearly GDDR memory around the APU they showed in the Xbox Scorpio reveal. Whether it's GDDR5 or GDDR5X is up for debate.

its_JEFF3633d ago

ughh... I highly doubt they reworked how the system worked! That would mean having to recode all the games that came previously, talking about switching from ddr3 to gddr5. My guess is they may have unlocked that portion that was dedicated to Kinect and made the OS footprint even smaller.

Sciurus_vulgaris3633d ago

The Kinect and OS reductions could be done to the old model as well.

its_JEFF3633d ago

it could, but it wasn't done in every game... and that's the difference. The dev's had to address it, they had to make a decision to utilize it or leave it.

BTW thank you for replying and having a discussion with me. Very few people on the Internet seem to know how to have a discussion with someone, who has differing opinion, without calling them a "fanboy" or worse.

Death3632d ago

They don't need to rework how the system works. How many gaming PC's are running eSram setups? How many gaming PC's will be able to play Gears 4 when it releases? It's a Windows 10 console and the games are written for Windows 10 software, not the hardware. Backwards compatibility on the Xbox also creates forward compatibility. Microsoft put a lot of thought and planning into the Win10 integration in both PC and Xbox.

its_JEFF3632d ago

they would have to rework the systems if they got rid of the esram in place of gddr5 memory. Switching that out means it was reworked, which means that they'd have to modify thier code. It's not as complicated, needlessly so, as the Cell processor but still a little.

But they've created software to help with that. That's why their games run on Windows 10, like you mentioned. I just think they're would be added cost to switching over to gddr5. The easiest eat for this question to be answered is to look at the console breakdown. When it launches someone will open it up. We should be able to see then. We just have to be on the look out for the esram die.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3632d ago
BossBattle3633d ago

The esram could always be bypassed. It doesn't have to be used.

its_JEFF3632d ago

but why would you pass up using that super fast memory? The esram was put there to help Xbox One process more. That's like having a Ferrari and not putting it into Race mode if you're ok the track. Gotta use that power!

donthate3633d ago

It's not GDDR5, because it is significantly faster. The memory bandwidth was announced to be 320+ GB/s, which is almost double the bandwidth of existing GDDR5 ala the PS4 that sits at 170+ Gb/s.

Xbox Scorpio will most likely have the latest GDDR5X SGRAM that was standardized in January of 2016 (this year!).

kneon3633d ago

If you recall with the xb1 reveal they also talked about hugh bandwidth but they had nonsensical numbers derived by adding up the bandwidth of the various buses.

3632d ago
OpenGL3632d ago

Based on the video they released saying 320GB/s that rules out HBM, so it sounds like it will be GDDR5. Digital Foundry astutely pointed out the number of chips on the mock up of the board they showed in the video being an odd amount, suggesting something like a 384-bit memory interface. They wouldn't need the eSRAM with that amount of bandwidth. Probably something like 7Gbps GDDR5 on a 384-bit memory bus.

They could be pulling some funny business though and using GDDR5X on a 256-bit interface, as the GDDR5X used on the GTX 1080 has 320GB/s of bandwidth with a 256-bit interface.

Today, Xbox reaches over 500 million players around the world, with some of the most important franchises in entertainment.

If they go back to exclusive games it at least shows that they are finally getting it. They would be turning down immediate money for something that will potentially workout in the long term.

Only issue is they've already opened Pandora's box. A lot of their base has moved to PC or jumped to PS. So will be a long road to get back on track.

We have been saying this from day one exclusives are a must if you are going to be selling hardware look at Nintendo and Sony before Jim Ryan. That's the proven formula. You had some that were deluded and blinded by loyalty accepting that multiplat was the future and that MS was merely getting ahead of where the industry was headed, but at least they can finally see the light and agree with what everyone has been saying for a decade+

pwnmaster300032d ago

True, blame it on the rabid fanboys. MS can do no wrong and spinner this multiplatform move. While the actual fans moved on.

I feel like with the new Xbox coming they are hoping to bring back those old fans and then if it goes well. Bring back exclusives.

If the new console is performing like series x and one. Naw they staying multiplatform.

darthv7232d ago

Actual fans dont move on... they can add to their hobby while waiting for the next new release. If you believe what you typed then I guess PS fans moved on too.... you know, since its been a Sahara for 1st party games this gen.

S2Killinit31d ago

The fans didn’t tell them to go multilat. MS was forced to after the 82 billion they spent to destroy gaming. Then, while xbox fans cheered, MS realized they can’t justify the price tag by selling through xbox only, so they went multiplat and in the process began to downplay console gaming.

32d ago Replies(4)
CrashMania32d ago

I think it's too late, xbox sales were diving even before ABK, they got even worse since then even long before the full multiplatform push. I'd be surprised if they even went back to timed exclusivity at this point, Helix is basically a PC and is going to be expensive, they already struggle to sell cheaper xbox consoles, it will be low volume and they'll have a very small 'console' base to sell to, which has already been conditioned to just play via gamepass anyway.

S2Killinit31d ago

They will do what they always do, they will promise the world at the beginning of next GEN and then failed to deliver all generation long. But there will always be some gamers who will buy into their promises.

ocelot0731d ago

Absolutely agree, Do people genuinely believe Microsoft are now going to go. Hang on how's about we go back to 2020. Then GP was stagnating, Games sold where awful because of GP. Outsold by Playstation by a landslide.

They have sold 5m of Forza I believe on PS5. Spite it being a old game. I think Starfield is going to sell well in the end. Halo is deffinetly going to sell well as is Fable and Forza Horizon 6.

I think at best (for Xbox fans). Single player titles like Clockwork will have a timed exclusivity. Multiplayer centric games like Forza, E Day will release day and date on all platforms.

Or all games will release on all platforms day and date. But maybe Xbox and Windows Store copies will have exclusive bonuses. Or may even get timed exclusive dlc like Fallout and Elder Scrolls and COD use to do.

I think they will treat Xbox players like the premium customers or at least act the way. But will serve just the Playstation and Switch 2 customers as well.

Neonridr32d ago

I don't see them removing PC from the equation. Considering MS has a heavy enough investment in the PC market, it would be foolish to abandon them. I could see them taking away games from PlayStation or ensuring they are timed exclusives at the very least. Say what you will but if Call of Duty ends up becoming a timed exclusive to Xbox machines, that would hurt PlayStation, don't pretend like those games don't sell millions.

Outside_ofthe_Box32d ago

They would lose out on a lot of CoD sales tho. Doesn't PS make up most of the sales?

Neonridr31d ago

@Outside - possibly, but it might push people to want Xbox hardware so they can play with their buddies day one.

Who knows.

S2Killinit31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

it would but remember doing that can splinter the COD fan base and in the process damage the call of duty brand which is probably the only franchise in that $82 billion purchase that in anyway gets even close to delivering what Microsoft thought they bought. If Microsoft fudges around too much with the COD franchise, you might even see a competitor franchise show up on the scene and that would be a catastrophe after the huge debt that Microsoft put itself into with the ABK purchase.

But Its almost guaranteed that Microsoft will want to do something drastic at the beginning of the next generation as they always do. We will see.

Pyrofire9532d ago

Their lifeline of solely the Xbox consoles is dry. Good-Great games on a 1st party scale can't be made at a loss so willingly - sent to the Xbox to only sell limited copies.
They invested billions scooping up studios and need to start making returns.
Sucks that nearly every company is publicly traded and have to be so shareholder biased but that's how it is.
Their words are strong but it'll take time to see what their actions accomplish. Lowering the cost of Game Pass and taking CoD off of it was a good clear start.

darthv7232d ago

More like, allot of their base just played game pass. So now they need to encourage them to start buying again.

S2Killinit31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

A lot of their base left for greener (bluer?) pastures.

--Onilink--32d ago

What exactly is the long term goal with exclusives though?

Because for the most part, the hardware side of things has never been the most profitable, even sometimes being subsidized for a period before breaking even. And that’s before the hardware component nightmare we currently live in.

The whole point of exclusives was to get more people to buy your console in order to have a bigger install base, which meant even bigger software sales.

But if their ports to PS5 are selling (for the most part it seems) quite well, then other than negating the cut Sony takes there, unless you are REALLY increasing your software sales on your own console, it probably doesn’t make that much of a difference?

Honestly I don’t even understand Sony’s decision to scale back on it for PC unless they weren’t even recouping the port expenses. They released ports when the hardware sales never really dropped, and now that all consoles will undoubtedly take a noticeable drop in sales due to the ridiculous prices, that’s when they decide they don’t want to sell to a larger install base to more easily recoup dev costs… it’s just weird

Outside_ofthe_Box32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

I agree. I mean once they went multiplat, in theory there should be no going back especially when you have games that have sold really well on other platforms.

Microsoft are the ones that announced that they are reevaluating. So I'm just guessing on what their end goal is. Right now Xbox as a hardware is not a must buy for anyone but fans of the brand because their games can be played elsewhere. Going exclusive would solve this, but you lose out on a ton of money instantly which has always been what the company does not want to do so not really sure what their "reevaluating exclusives" means unless they are pulling a Phil Spencer and are just saying what people want to hear and will continue to do what they are currently doing.

darthv7231d ago

Their ports to PS5 are selling because Sony's output has been so dry... the fans are thirsty, and MS is the oasis.

SIdepocket32d ago

Unfortunately, the studios they buy wither under their leadership.

mcstorm31d ago

Microsoft still has a name with Xbox the issue is the casual games are not looking at the console because its not the same console their friends have. Look at that poll on how many users upgraded from xbox 365 to one and then the X. Part of Microsoft's downfall was thinking that the Wii was the market they had to be in when really it was the core market. If you get the core gamers you then get the market to. As I posted a few minuets ago on another post Microsoft putting exclusives on PS this gen could bold well if they hit next gen with all our games are staying exclusive from this new gen. They will then get gamers wanting Halo, Forza Gears but this is also where Microsoft fell over with the xbox one and X in terms of they did not have may quality 1st party games affter they fell into the Gears, Forza and Halo cycle. If they can get some old IPs back to bring back the old core gamers as well as fresh ips to bring in new gamers things could improve next gen. But as I said in my last post its all if buts and maybes at the moment. No one knows if the next home consoles will be to expensive that people move to pc as we are now seeing or look at the stem deck as a cheepier alternitive.

DarXyde31d ago

"Only issue is they've already opened Pandora's box."

That's very optimistic. It's not the only issue, far from it. There is a serious rupture between Microsoft generally and the public caused by their weird Game Pass price fluctuations, taking down physical game space in stores, and being the first to go nuts on hardware price hikes that they themselves played a big part in.

They're also charging beyond a premium for Helix which is just vile at a time when the economy is in shambles.

The company itself is really not doing itself any favors with the approach they're taking Windows. Even France is looking to ditch Windows in favor of Linux.

But the most offensive thing is this AI push. They're doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down on the very technology they're using to replace a considerable proportion of their workforce... And the slap in the face is how they bake copilot into everything when nobody likes it—they couldn't even make Bing stick, so why on earth are they trying so hard? You know it's bad when people would rather use ChatGPT than Copilot which is killing their OS. But aside from their snatching up of farmland to build data centers (and reduce the agriculture capacity of whichever country allows them to build them), they made an AI-generated gamer gurl that loves AI the head of Xbox.

Even if we grant them the full benefit of the doubt, it hardly matters what Xbox wants to do if Nadella says no, and that includes exclusive games. Microsoft's relationship with Xbox is the opposite of Sony's relationship with PlayStation—Microsoft pulls the reins of Xbox, but Sony damn near went under for the PS3.

“If they go back to exclusive games it at least shows that they are finally getting it.”

Great strategy, especially after Forza selling 5 million on PlayStation and sea of thieves selling at least another million (2 million) for example. In March 2026, Xbox consoles sales ratio vs PS was 10:1.

In addition to that, with Gamepass, which unequivocally cuts out chunks of sales (Cannibalizing revenue from 1st month sales especially).

I’m sure going exclusive again after releasing everything on Ps5 is going to work out great for business.

Despite all of that, it's clear that Microsoft's Xbox division is broken beyond repair.

PlayStation is currently draining money on flop after flop. It's Sony that needs to re-evaluate their strategy

Wonder how much money was lost on perfect dark, hellbalde 2, 300 million lost revenue
by putting cod on gamepass. The recent Jason schrier news that Xbox has cancelled dozens of projects, spent 70 billion just to see Xbox sales further collapse and gamepass see little growth.

The fact is this has been PlayStation's most profitable generation and they are making loads of money and selling plenty of consoles and games. While MS won't give you any sales figures or profit numbers for Xbox, says it all really.

"Our presence on PC isn’t strong enough."

Fishy Fingers32d ago

It isnt. But I dont think they mean in 'games', rather, footprint.

They own the OS but as far as gaming is concerned, Steam dominate. I imagine the VAST majority of people who use the Xbox app/launcher are PC gamepass subs. No ones buying their 3rd party PC games through Xbox PC.

and many gamers prefer SteamOS for gaming over Windows too. If only Valve would be more uncompromising to the anti-cheat makers that locked out non-windows players, more pc gamers would have moved onto SteamOS by now and not looking back to Windows. overall, Win11 is a terrible, bloated, unoptimized OS which is not what many people want

Agreed and I think that's where they are going to focus on more. I think cheaper games on Windows/Xbox store (MS IP) compared to Steam and Epic and maybe even compared to PSN store as well.
