Double Take: Why Did Star Fox Zero Bomb in Sales?

Star Fox Zero was one of the last few key releases for the Wii U. After missing the Holiday 2015 deadline and being delayed, it along with Pokken Tournament and Twlight Princess HD were the highlights of Nintendo’s spring releases for their ill-fated home console. So why did it manage to bomb in terms of sales?

b/c nintendo in it's current state is dead. They really need to pull back on the console race and start making money, licensing franchises like zelda, mario and others to sony/microsoft. They'd make a killing.

Dan_scruggs3639d ago

Is that why Pokken Tournament outsold Street Fighter 5? Just curious. Or is it because Nintendo tried something different with a well loved franchise and it just didn't resonate with people.

KentBenMei3639d ago

Pokken Tournament outsold Street Fighter 5 because SFV got bad publicity from casuals for not having Arcade Mode lmao.

Why don't you ask which of the two games broke records for EVO? Sad fanboys always spin s***. SFV > PT as competitive Fighting games.

ChronoTrigger23639d ago

1) They are already making money
2) Nintendo has sold more software than any publisher so far this year. They have had 5+ software hits already.

Dead? Come on

pcz3639d ago

being a crap game had a lot to do with it

Servbot413639d ago

Shorter than the N64 game, garbage controls, dead console.

masterfox3639d ago

lol serious question please, I mean come on is obvious why it sucked so hard, here are some facts of why it failed:

* Delays! lots of them
* Disgusting controls with a disgusting control pad
* Nintendo console specs so damn old!!
* almost 20 year old visuals
* No innovation at all on its gameplay.
* No memorable soundtrack
* And yes Miyamoto was in the project, seriously Miyamoto need to get the hell out Nintendo he had his glorious days but now it needs to get the hell out.

wonderfulmonkeyman3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

* Other companies delay games all the time and they still don't see sales suffer horrendously from it.[barring Mighty No. 2]
* So because you sucked at controlling the game, suddenly that makes it the game's fault that you suck? LOL! It plays fine for anyone with any relevant skill level.
* Specs don't determine sales. If they did, Vita would be beating 3DS.
* You're blind; there's nothing about the visuals that screams 20 years old. The art style, MAYBE. But not the visuals as a whole.
* Yeah, because having a viewpoint in free roam that allows you to lock-on and see attacks that you'd normally never see coming isn't innovative at all. Please.
* The remixes were fantastic; I don't know what you're smoking, but the music was not a flaw.
* Miyamoto hate, now? And I thought the REST of your list screamed hater. PFFT.

It failed to sell because the controls were too hard for the majority of casuals. I'd bet that half the people complaining never even touched the game in the first place anyways.

RosweeSon3639d ago

Miyamoto is fine where he is thanks.

DualWielding3639d ago

it bombed because it had graphics from 2 gens ago, was overpriced for what little content it had, had a gimmicky control scheme nobody wanted and was exclusive to the least popular console in the market

LOL_WUT3639d ago

Agreed. I'm all for nostalgia but the graphics really hurt Star Fox's chances of doing well. And don't get me started on the gimmicky control scheme... ;)

GrimmyReaper3639d ago

Apparently they didn't wanna saturate the series and release when they had new ideas.
Yeah, cause if one series has too many games, it's Star Fox
/s

KentBenMei3639d ago

Accidentally disagreed. SF is way underrepresented 3DS and Wii deserved entries, as well as GBA.

garrettbobbyferguson3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

Because the series is a niche series that was shit on by media that couldn't figure out how Gyro controls work for the game (even though they're praised for Splatoon). The last console star fox game, assault, only sold a million copies world wide. Star Fox 64 3D has sold less than a million according to vg chartz also. Star Fox 64 is the only title to have broken past that and sold 4 million copies.

The only people calling the series dead are the ones who have literally never played a star fox game in their life. But now one of my favorite series will probably be killed off.

KentBenMei3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

You only have Nintendo to blame for SF dying. No original games for Wii or 3DS and then they s*** SFZ onto their failed console and expect it to sell. Lol.

They should have remastered Star Fox Adventures and Assault instead, IMO, and made a real SF game for NX.

pcz3638d ago (Edited 3638d ago )

starfox 64 was genuinely innovative at the time though. it came with the rumble pack accessory, which allowed players to 'feel' .. ie, force feedback, dual shock. this was a first for console gaming, and sony were quick to mimmick. it has been a standard feature in controllers since. the game also had extensive use of real voices.. this was amazing for a cartridge game at the time. plus the game was actually good. it deserved the success.

starfox zero is straight garbage. its only innovation being a completely broken control scheme which renders the game unplayable. starfox zero is a step backwards for the franchise and an insult to the fans who waited patiently for a new entry.

of course it would bomb at retail!

garrettbobbyferguson3638d ago

"Broken control scheme"

Get gud. Children can figure it out in Splatoon and Star Fox. So can you.

Random: Takaya Imamura Ponders The Possibility Of Star Fox Zero On 'Switch 2'

It's a good ponder. Nintendo would be stupid to not do it. The more titles and first party line up released on the Switch 2 the more enticed the customer will be.

Star Fox Zero, Was it Really That Bad?

Has time been kind to Star Fox Zero? Does the game have any redeeming qualities that are worthy of revisiting? Should it be considered for a port to the Switch? Was it really that bad?

Haven't played it since it came out, but I really enjoyed it. Can't tell if that's just nostalgia-tinted glasses, or if I actually consider it a good game though lol.

Vits1673d ago

It's a mediocre game that reuses ideas, scenarios, characters and moments from previous ones. Paired with one of the worst control methods that I had the displeasure of using.

CptDville1671d ago

Those controls. Boring and frustrating at the same time. Only with co-op they were bearable, but co-op was restricted to finished levels.

SeTTriP1672d ago

Yes couldn't finish it it was so boring.

MissAubrey1671d ago

controls made me stop playing also what good is a 65inch tv when you have to look at a tiny Wiiu tablet.. same with kirby & the rainbow curse..

Einhander19711671d ago

No it was great, just the control scheme spoilt things really. The wii u screen was not needed for it really

I’d rather Star Fox Assault be brought to Switch with online multiplayer instead

Teflon021721d ago

Finally, someone who knows about Assault. Best Star Fox Multi-player imo.

Neonridr1721d ago

or a Star Fox 64 remaster instead.

deadfrag1721d ago

Platinum Games wants to many things but sadly it does not show nothing new for years! They try to jump on all offers but end finishing none!

whitbyfox1721d ago

1: Get rid of the motion controls.

2: Bring us Okami 3.

Good-Smurf1721d ago (Edited 1721d ago )

I rather have them show more of Bayonetta 3 first before they talking about any new project.
This reeks Inafune's funding for Red Ash and Mighty No.9 animated series, both never materialized.
