Microsoft's Potential PC/Console Hybrid E3 Bombshell

Imagine a Xbox PC/Console hybrid that enables the Xbox One to boot up Windows 10. An announcement at this year's E3 to this effect would be a bombshell

So it's the Steam machine, but instead of Linux, it boots in to Windows 10... Hum...

ScorpiusX3595d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

No Its a Hybrid XBPC no association or relation to Steam , so no need to mention that name . this device will be much more .

It has to do more so to seem more attractive than those lame steam boxes and they know it needs to do more .

NewMonday3594d ago

dose it install steam? or software from anywhere?

if not then what is the point?

Kenshin_BATT0USAI3594d ago

"this device will be much more"

It's basically a pc with less functionality. What's the more here? Paying for online? lol

Fin_The_Human3594d ago

New Monday my guess would be mostly convenience.

Imagine having one machine that can play all of the XB1/exclusives and PC exclusive while getting the benefits of mods and the extra horse power that can be accomplished on PC.

krypt19833594d ago

@ I don't need to install software to my scropio then I would have to worry about virus and shit like that but I will take league of Legends and other pc games on my Xbox thank you it's ov ...

nix3594d ago

I don't know about this hybrid... If they tie it to Xbox games only why would anyone buy it? And let's say they bring in Steam games too... Remember what happened to Steam box? Not many bought it.

If this is true, it's just a delusional step from MS.

Kingthrash3603594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

Been saying this for so long bro...if this happens it's the Xbox exit. It is no longer a console....just an underpowered pc with less features. Smh it's over if this happens. Why not buy a steam machine...would have 1000s more games.

Liqu1d3594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

It would basically be a Windows 10 machine. What's the point of that?

NewMonday3594d ago

@Fin_The_Human

thing about PC exclusives is that they are tied to a service like Steam and Origin if they are not allowed you don't get the games, if they are then gamers will just use them and ditch XBL, on PC Overwatch is $40 and with free online, you think MS will allow that?

if this happens it could be W10lite OS with just one store and no un-licencee 3rd party apps

agame9143594d ago

please explain the difference??????in fine detail

Erik73573594d ago

if it can boot up windows you'll be able to get steam, won't ever be bigger than steam store, it dwarfs even PlayStation Network and Xbox live network combined

Pogmathoin3594d ago

An hybrid, with Win 10, also fully xbox, and should allow Steam..... Many things in one place...... Yes..... Delusional...... Maybe Sony will counter this with some new media stotage device... Again..... Splinter, rather than unite.....

Kosm3595d ago

And they'd have the branding and market penetration to pull it off. Valve didn't have much commitment to Steam machines outside of providing rough guidelines to various manufacturers and working on an OS tailored for gaming. Comparatively, it looks like Microsoft simply has to offer the option to boot into Windows 10 if someone wants to and then they're opening the Windows store up to Xbox customers.

starchild3595d ago

Yeah, it would be similar to that. I actually wrote about this idea several years ago, before the PS4 and XB1 came out. I saw it as a sensible path for Microsoft, but then Microsoft ended up releasing the XB1 instead. It's interesting that here we are a few years later with rumors and the possibility of something similar to what I envisioned.

In my opinion, one of the biggest things going against the Steam Machines is that Linux lacks the game support of Windows. People don't want a system that only plays a fraction of today's games and lacks backwards compatibility with the PC's massive catalogue of games.

Since Microsoft has a vested interest in Windows and Xbox I thought it would make sense for them to bring them together in some way. I thought they could do this by making them run the same exact software. The Xbox would essentially be a standardized Windows gaming PC for those that prefer the more streamlined console-type experience. While custom built PCs would be for those of us that like more control of our gaming experience.

kneon3595d ago

I suggested something similar before launch, only backwards. PCs would boot into xbox mode and the xbox would just be a mini PC with the xbox OS.

nix3594d ago

There are already a machine that does what you predicted - i think they're called Personal Computer.

Magnes3594d ago

I kept saying it months ago Microsoft and Sony are not blind to the success of steam not the device but the platform.

thexmanone3594d ago

Why not? You don`t like to have a option.

GrimmyReaper3594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

Say what you will about Steam but Microsoft wanting even further control of my games on my pc? Or keep track of what I'm doing? Or maybe ads in games?

Just look at Games for Windows Live or the Microsoft store. You'd understand why I am very skeptical of the idea of wanting to turn my pc in more of a console/pc hybrid

Let consoles be consoles and PC be PC

RosweeSon3594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

Games consoles.. Clues in the title... GAMES.
Yeah PC does play games when it works... Months after releasing on consoles... GTA.

Thefreeman0123594d ago

Odd, I was under the assumption my pc played games

garrettbobbyferguson3594d ago

When it works? That's odd. I've got a library of 172 games that *just works*.

whothedog3595d ago

I think MS would be against a xbox being able to run Steam as they make no money from sales of games when it's through Steam and it would hurt their windows store they are trying to promote. I also think Valve would not be for that given what they have said in the past about MS, but I don't think Valve would pass up the opportunity to profit more so who knows.

ninsigma3595d ago

You make a good point. Also, this might be stupid, but would games from steam be legal to run on xbox?? The licensing would be for Windows I guess but does that licensing only include an actual pc as opposed to some sort of console??

vegasgamerdawg3594d ago

You 2 already have the Valve and MS contracts already worked out....lol. There is no good point, it's a fantasy on top of a guess....no points, no sense of reality, just a fanBOY.

ScorpiusX3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

Only way that happens if MS maintains control of their game pricing , don't see them allowing their games to go from 59.99 to 9.99 cause someone's always having massive price reductions every week.

starchild3595d ago

I personally don't see the scenario laid out in the article coming to pass. I don't believe Microsoft will put a dual boot feature into the XB1. The XB1 already runs on a modified Windows OS, but I suspect Microsoft will not be interested in offering the ability to boot into the full version of Windows 10. It will be enough for the Xbox to run Windows 10 apps and games, while using a modified, streamlined version of Windows 10 suitable to the console experience.

Utalkin2me3594d ago

If it doesnt allow steam then whats the point? It would be basically a less powerful PC with less features and paywalls and still not have steam.

Imalwaysright3594d ago

Yeah. How would MS make money from software if people bought their games from Steam?

Kosm3594d ago

Microsoft doesn't release their games on Steam, they're exclusive to the Windows store on PC. EA and Blizzard also keep their games off Steam, with their titles exclusive to Origin and Battlenet. I think that Sony has started publishing some of their games on Steam, though.

Imalwaysright3594d ago

But what about multiplatform games? Everyone would buy them from Steam.

Yeah...The Steam machines are so succesfull and the PC market is in such a good shape ATM... it would be a very good idea ! *sarcasm*

starchild3595d ago

Huh? PC gaming is thriving like never before. Go look up the figures. The growth of PC gaming has been phenomenal.

hiawa233595d ago

PC market may be okay, but everything I have has stated those PC consoles have not sold well at all.

kneon3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

The PC gaming stats are exaggerated because they include people playing things like facebook games on PC.

The overall PC market is in decline as fewer and fewer people have any need for a PC.

joeorc3594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

@starchild17m ago
[Huh? PC gaming is thriving like never before. ]
Go look up the figures. The growth of PC gaming has been phenomenal.

That's the point, [PC gaming]
This is the console market, it was designed to be seperate market because the Game console market is not the PC gaming market!

The Reason for doing so is because it has many reasons and things about such platforms to reasons why they work in the market and other reasons why they do not work in a specific market, but one of which is to make a market set separately from the PC market to make a compute platform for the Living room.

Outside of PC's, The PC's market. Home office platform is a platform for Office's or a Den . over the years its now Everywhere already as a platform . with Game consoles it was livingroom or bedroom, but with handheld game consoles it was also everywhere also but in more limited nature..no Game console Laptop's for example.

What Microsoft and Valve has tried to do over the years with it being more so with Microsoft than valve until recently,is replacing the existing game console market with a PC market clone...the problem is once again. Is the very

[ foundation of purpose]
for your product.

Console's served as a purpose of a game computer for the livingroom like the Atari. While Microsoft's media center PC was served to replace such type of platforms completely.

Problem for Microsoft and Valve is when you Tie in PC to your Console its seen as again a Replacement for game console's not a game console. Which almost boils down to..why do I need another PC in my house when I already have one?

[Change of purposes ]
of what a game console is to back to just being another PC is exactly why in reason of Microsoft's problem it is having. Before when Xbox starting with the very 1st one was marketed as a game console designed to be marketed as such they gained some ground.

Now with Microsoft's active marketing to combine the Xbox with that of a PC, the two as a unified platform like they already have been over the years with the concepts of the media center PC.

It has shown by History to not work,it could very well work this time, but again I would not bet on it.

starchild3594d ago

@hiawa23

Yeah, but shaenoide clearly separated those two things. Stream Machines are one thing, while overall PC gaming is another. The Steam Machines apparently haven't done too well, but PC gaming in general has never been stronger.

@kneon

I'm talking about things like the continued growth of Steam, game-related hardware sales, game software sales and the ever-increasing number of games being released on PC. All of which clearly reflect how much PC gaming is growing and thriving.

It's true that desktop PC sales in general have declined in recent years, but that has nothing to do with PC gaming. It just means that fewer people are using desktops to browse the internet and things like that. Sales for graphics cards and other gaming-related hardware have actually increased.

As for game sales, I've seen plenty of reports that separate out the different categories of games, and even discounting the social Facebook type games the amount of revenue being generated by PC game sales is very strong. Which is why more and more developers/publishers are putting their games on PC.

Utalkin2me3594d ago

@starchild

Thats actually false. Hence the reason you didnt provide any information to back up your comment. PC hardware sales have been a slump for quite a few years now. Just google Nvidia sales or Intel sales or any other hardware. It has been on a steady decline for a while. While Valve user log in has stayed pretty much the same for that period of time. There is no growth for sure.

shaenoide3594d ago

I am talking about the PC market not PC gaming :

The PC market is not only in the best shape it's ever been, but it's also in the best shape among all game systems

Most PC gamers right now do not have HDR monitors. "as long as you have a compatible HDR monitor" I'm using a 240hz Alienware 1080p GSYNC panel, (AW2518H) while I love it and love the high FPS in games, I'm not buying a new lcd just yet. So for now I just use reshade in all the games I play and enable "fake HDR" 😁 It's pretty good to, not real HDR but close enough for me. 👍

darthv721854d ago

If someone doesnt have an HDR PC monitor, can't they use a HDR supported tv? Most PC cards support HDMI out so I would think that could be one option. It might not have the uber high refresh but I'm sure it could work.

XxINFERNUSxX1854d ago (Edited 1854d ago )

Yeah the HDR TV will work over HDMI. I'm using displayport myself but if your just using that connection you can just use a displayport to hdmi adapter since displayport carries audio just like HDMI.

XbladeTeddy1854d ago

"Most PC gamers right now do not have HDR monitors."

Your point? Nothing wrong with Microsoft impementing this. Once you do get a HDR monitor in the future I'm sure you'll be moaning if Microsoft didn't have any support for it on Windows. They're not going to postpone it because XxINFERNUSxX doesn't have the right monitor yet.

CaptainHenry9161854d ago (Edited 1854d ago )

This is great news. I'm about to invest in a new HDMI 2.1 and Display port 2.0 monitor this year I'm looking at you Asus PG32UQ . Perfect timing 👌

1854d ago
Wrex3691854d ago

This is such a cool feature honestly.

Fluke_Skywalker1853d ago

This is good news I hate having to enable HDR manually everytime I play an HDR enabled game. Some games already turn it on automatically but they are very few and far between (Destiny 2 is actually the only one I know of 😅).

Steam vs DS4Windows – Which is best for DualSense On the PC

Now that I've had some time to play with the PS5 DualSense on PC with Steam and DS4Windows, it's time to decide which is best for PC gaming.

My issue is that on steam you can modify on a game by game bases as some nave native support and DS4Windows you'd have to turn on and off and the issue with what I'm saying. If it has native support and you use the Steam API or DS4W it'll give you Xbox control prompts so it's more convenient to just run the steam API. Generally games outside of steam make sure to have support unless old. I have both and will only use DS4W if I absolutely have to. It's good but the game by game bases on steam is so much more ideal. Example Games with DS4 native support will allow trackpad support like Ni no Kuni using the track pad. But with DS or Steam activated it puts the trackpad to the share button. So the manual ability to disable it anytime that game starts makes it where that game operates correctly every time

XxINFERNUSxX1958d ago (Edited 1958d ago )

I just use my 360 controller for 3rd person games, like GTA. All FPS games keyboard/mouse. No need for me to spend 70$ on a controller. Plus I like it to just work without any drivers just plug & play like the 360 controller.

Try turning off Windows 10's Game Mode if your games are stuttering or freezing

A growing number of users say Game Mode is causing performance issues in games.

oasdada2166d ago (Edited 2166d ago )

Wow i just turned off my game mode a few days ago just because.. and i felt sloght performance getting better but i thought maybe it was just me.. and now i read this

godmachine2166d ago

Right , I read this about a week ago and immediately changed it even with a nvidia gpu my fallout 4 with 3d vision stopped hitching almost entirely

starchild2166d ago

Hmm I've been getting microstuttering in games on my relatively new Ryzen 5 3600. But it always goes away once I restart my PC. Very strange. But I think I already have game mode turned off.

Rude-ro2166d ago

Not sure if you can turn it off.
I
Have to go into task manager and fight it to get it stop running.

Skuletor2166d ago

I turned it off today, was relatively simple. Went to settings, gaming, clicked game mode on the side tab, then toggled it off

Rude-ro2166d ago

@sicksincesix

Right... but I find it still running when going through the task manager.

traumadisaster2166d ago

Last week I heard of that while trying to figure out audio stuttering on a rd 5700. There seems to be a lot of people having audio crackle and go in and out on amd. It seems like there is an audio conflict with two sources trying to control, I don't know.

monkey6022166d ago

I've been diving into the PC gaming side of things head first since last summer and I have a good grasp of it and I'm comfortable with it all now

But what you've just said is exactly why there'll always be a space for home consoles in the gaming market 😂

traumadisaster2166d ago

True, there can be enough problems to make one think it's not worth it. But overall since the ps360 days playing in HD or even 4k at 60 fps vs the muck of 720p under 30fps, non vsync with awful tearing it makes you figure out the pc. Then when you get steam sales over the years it's really nice. But there is a small percentage of pc horror stories that won't happen on console.

TheColbertinator2166d ago

Did this a year back and apart from less performance hiccups I also got less sound glitches. W10 Game mode is not a very beneficial feature for me.
