Dude...the X360 was 9 years in and the PS3 was 8 years in when this current gen started. That is a long time between gen. Lucky for this gen, mid-gen upgrade is the new trend and we don't have to wait that long anymore. Bring on Scorpio and Neo.

Angerfist3642d ago

I agree with your first part, but disagree with the second. The current models have alot of steam left and we shouldn't support these new systems and the PC "we're too lazy to optimize so give us more power" route.

Last Generation was over 7-8 years full of improvements and constant graphical increases.

Errorist763642d ago

Microsoft already abandoned their console 7 years in.

pyroxxx3642d ago

@Errorist76 ,.. you mean 4-5 years in

darthv723642d ago (Edited 3642d ago )

The 8th generation launched at the right time. Both MS and Sony didn't figure things would progress so quickly with PC and the increasing debate and demand for full HD gaming with hardware that neither could really pull off.

The 8th could be coming to a close much sooner than expected. Nintendo is releasing their 9th gen system next year and the rumors of Scorpio make it seem all to poised to be a 9th gen system as well. Neo, if it isnt a significant leap like Scorpio, could wind up the 32x of the 8th gen.

Then again that could be Sony's plan. To keep the PS4 relevant for a little while longer while the real PS5 is getting ready for release. Just have to wait and see.

Omnislashver363642d ago

Actually this gen was 2-3 years LATE. That's the issue. If they'd have released the consoles on time we'd be on PS5/X2 right now, which would have been better and not had to worry about mid-gen refreshes moving forward.

Thatguy-3103643d ago

It launched to late that was the problem. Last gen lasted far too long

Xavior_Reigns3642d ago

Completely agree, PS4 & XBO shouldve released in 2010.

ShaunCameron3642d ago (Edited 3642d ago )

Because it took half a generation for Sony and Microsoft to recoup the money they lost on the PS3 and 360.

ApocalypseShadow3643d ago

Well...when people were crying that last gen lasted to long, console companies like Sony were preparing for next gen. Gamers just didn't know it because of impatience. But gamers just don't understand development or tech cost.

First, big games take:lots of money, lots of man power, lots of time. As games advanced, they took longer to make. Companies need to make back their investment. Maybe put out 2-3 games depending on the size of the teams.5-10 if your big like EA. Look at how many companies closed shop last gen. Or had to merge to survive. Developing games isn't easy. And one failure means closing up shop.

Second, as tech costs rose, hardware companies needed to make back their R&D costs and make some type of profit as consoles were sold at a loss and marketing costs millions. Sony put everything and the kitchen sink in PS3 so that you didn't have to buy add-on BS. But gamers cried foul because they couldn't afford it. Or bashed Sony because they said you should save more to want to buy it because it wasn't going to be the traditional $299. Now gamers are crying that Sony didn't put the kitchen sink in and went with an all around system with good power to cost ratio that's easy to develop on.

Now, developers are making profit and can survive, Sony is making profit and can survive and gamers are getting mostly quality games. Buy still don't understand that great games take time. More so because gamers cry over small details.I can understand frame rate. But crying over how much grass there is is silly. And those wishing for mid gen consoles with even more detail, it's going to take even longer to make games with more money and more manpower.

But no, next gen started at about the right time. 5 year cycles make sense to jump to 6-7 years because of cost. These aren't the days of Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis.

Bathyj3642d ago

No but it seems they're trying to start the 9th too soon.

BLow3642d ago

That and people wanted a console to put out Avatar graphics but at a cheap unrealistic price. Can't have both. Now all people do is complain and wonder why things are happening the way they are....it's really not that hard to figure out....0_o

Godmars2903642d ago

What else is new. This has been happening since the PS3 and 360. Maybe the PS2 and first Xbox considering that with the Xbox patches became a thing. Consoles stopped being just consoles and moved towards more a PC mentality.

rainslacker3642d ago

You always know the perfect thing to say in the simplest way possible.

Bravo to you good sir.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot23d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose24d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE24d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername23d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy24d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde23d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8623d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8623d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300024d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle23d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
