PlayStation has become Sony's cornerstone

PS4 is great, and PSVR/Neo will drive hype - but Sony's success is also down to its competitors' failures giving it a clear run at a thriving market.

As much as the writer makes many valid points that are true, the statement "...Sony's success is also down to its competitors' failures..." is contentious as one can make the argument that the competitors have failed precisely because Sony has executed a plan that has been flawless backed by exclusives that have driven the console forward even further, including 'Infamous: Second Son', 'Bloodborne' and 'Uncharted 4', the latter being the biggest exclusive on the PS4 thus far. Sony learnt much from the hubris that led to the PS3 and being gamer-centric was one of the lessons that has served the company well. The PS4 was always meant to be used for gaming primarily unlike the Xbox One which was designed to signify a shift in strategy from Xbox where the console was a single user interface to all entertainment in your living room coupled with draconian anti-consumer policies that discouraged game sharing and pushed towards more spending by the consumer on services behind a paywall. The simplicity offered by the PS4 coupled with the knowledge gamers have that Sony will always have excellent first party games, something that has been true from the days of PS1, are the reasons why Sony has been successful.

Well said bro...with that said though Sony better not get too complacent.

PS4 success is making MS a better game comoany and made them humble.

This E3 should be interesting since Sony is already on top and pushing VR hard with a rumored PS4.5.

Where MS seems to be shifting toward more a more powerful console with the unification of W10 and partnership with Oculus this can be a game changer for MS.

Seriously can you imagine being able to play any PC games on your XBox with 6 teraflops worth of power.

I know some of you may say then why not just get a PC...the thing is that console gamers play consoles and don't want or intend to play on PC.

Jayszen3663d ago

Agreed. Competition is good for both Sony and MS.

I suspect that both companies have their own strategies mapped out to deliver the results they want and whether they succeed or not will depend on how much each delivers what the gamers want.

I am looking forward to PSVR, Neo and even a souped up Xbone. As long as gamers and gaming is pushed forward, it's all good.

susanto12283663d ago

That's some good news there...the bad news is that they failed at everything else...
laptop, tv, cellphone etc....I thought diversity was suppose to be the strength of a company?

People like you and this author are clueless beyond belief. Sony has way more business than that which are successful. Sony is involved in areas that people tend to always ignore. Electronic components, medical equipment, financial services, optical formats and a lot more. People who think that the entire sony corporation is being propped up by a $400 gaming console are beyond ridiculous.

BossBattle3663d ago

All those other things you named is not enough to support a whole corporation. I think that's another reason Sony is releasing the Neo because of the hype of new devices entering the market. After the hype then popular device sell at a steady rate. Apple for example does this with Iphones. That first year is when all these devices sell the most and tend to have higher prices. That's why I believe Sony and MS will be releasing upgraded consoles every 2-3 years especially considering the Playstation boss said there might not be a PS5. 10 year consoles are a thing of the past and I'm happy about that.

IIFloodyII3663d ago

@BossBattle
The things he listed are easily enough to support a corporation, the financial services alone could keep Sony afloat for years, especially now that they've cut off a lot of the fat.

Fist4achin3663d ago

I just picked a sony Bravia TV and I'm more than happy with it. The sales people were really pushing LG and I just liked the Sony a lot better. The LG would have been a few hundred dollars cheaper, but when I invest in something that I plan to keep for a while, I will spend the extra. I haven't looked back.

rainslacker3663d ago (Edited 3663d ago )

Funny thing. Sony's TV research is responsible for most of the technology we see in TV's and displays today. They just can't compete as well in the marketplace because they have to get back that R&D money to make those innovations which other companies either rip off or license patents from, to go on and make TV's significantly cheaper because most people don't want to pay for the innovation.

Their cellphone division was doing pretty well last I checked...although I haven't checked in a while. Laptops you have a point on, despite them being fine products. But that was what...10+ years ago they got out of the laptop business? I'm sure if we look at any company that's been around a while, we'd find failures.

However, think I could list more things they are good at than what I could list they lose money on.

@Boss

So what you're saying is the bulk of Sony's 84 billion dollar worth is derived from the PS brand? Well...hell, no wonder they have so much interest in making it so good. Kind of weird that their worth would be more than 4 times the actual worth of the entire US video game industry. Maybe they're fudging the numbers. Will have to contact the SEC.

Which brings me to another point. If the entire US video game industry is worth 20 billion dollars, why are people assuming that MS is going to put all their billions, or even a significant portion of their billions, into that market? The worldwide numbers don't put it up high enough either before people decide to make that an argument.

This was a solid read. While the article stated the obvious, it certainly left room for the imagination. In ones opinion, Microsoft truly needs to build upon a great foundation from this point moving forward, a foundation that should be represented by a barrage of quality first party titles, and not just the conveyor belt approach of simply a few recognizable franchises from last-gen. They need to hit hard in this department. This is something Sony has masterfully established with SWS, Sony Worldwide Studios. As we know, multiplatform titles at this point only help offset console purchase loss for Microsoft. This is a good thing, yet it has no influence on the market when the competition is raging like the PS4. Every move Microsoft makes at this point with the Xbox One should be in an effort to build a positive perception of the Xbox brand as an uber gaming portal with irresistible and unique video game offerings, again multiplatform titles only means you've showed up. Ushering in a positive mind share for gaming's next generation is ultimately founded on the unique gaming experiences of the previous generation.

'Sony success is also down to its competiors' failures 'AND the competitors failure is also down to Sony success.
I think that was a good point the first year but after all the changes in xbox offering and new direction widely praised by the media Id say the PS4 success has been earned on its own merits.

Fin_The_Human3663d ago

Sony need to sell or kill off the TV and Cell phone business like they did with the VAIO laptop.

Those two things aew bleeding money and are surviving off the P$4 money.

Angeljuice3663d ago (Edited 3663d ago )

They can't sell off the TV business, they used to be the top company for displays, and I'm sure Sony would prefer to try and claw their way back up than give up when things get tough.
Sony's newer phones are really good, they just aren't "en vogue" at the moment. Things change and you have to be in the market to make your move when they do.

Fin_The_Human3662d ago

I somewhat agree with you but if a certain sector has not seen profit in years then they should move on.

Kudos to them for still sticking around those markets but the smart phone market already has 5 major players and it will take Sony a long time to make it in that top 5.

TV market is pretty much ran by Samsung, Toshiba, LG and even a cheap brand like Vizio is starting to gain some market shares.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2157d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
