Doom Review in Progress - IGN

"We've completed the single-player campaign - here's what we think so far."

SaveFerris3650d ago

What is the point of releasing a 'review in progress'? All it does is make fanboys angry and presents a problem because they have published a partial score.

tmisellati3649d ago

what a stupid idea !
just score the damn thing when you are ready

Reibooi3649d ago

I think they posted a reason on the website and it was something along the lines of their readers complaining about the old way they did this which was without a score and was just impressions and now they caved and give a temp score even though that is a really stupid way to do things. Before people complained and now they complain they should have just kept doing what they were doing.

That said I am only a few hours into DOOM and I think it's a lot better then most are giving it credit for. I imagine the scores are gonna be lower because it is so much different and it's play style and I also expect the multiplayer to be a point of issue for alot of folks.

Next from IGN:

"Review in progress part1: Opening the package."
"Review in progress part 2: The menu."
"Review in progress part 3: Creating a character."

For IGN, i give 2/10 - Too much review.

Kleptic3649d ago (Edited 3649d ago )

No clue what the point of a partial review warrants, but I have a feeling its little more than some opinion generators being miffed about having to wait to jot down what's already in their head....

I'm pleasantly surprised at what i've played of the campaign so far (guessing i'm about half way through)...

the core mechanics are so much better than 'watchers' think. It can't be explained, and it can't be easily quantified...its funny to me that a retro reboot is reintroducing certain things so well that modern gaming media doesn't really know what to do with it. The game doesn't hold your hand, but also isn't cheap and forced...its the most shallow shooter in years, yet also somehow has more depth and possibility within combat than anything within the same time frame.

but what has surprised me the most is how well it handles the entire theme. It starts with subtle details that 'doomguy' has no time for BS about anything; punching robots that hold upgrades, etc...but just gets funnier...the section with the energy filter things, and the voice over goes into some in depth explanation on how they should be disabled a specific way to make 'both sides happy'...and your dude just starts curb stomping equipment while getting yelled at...it honestly makes fun of modern gaming if you really think about it...which is EXACTLY what the originals did in the early 90's.

everything about the single player just fits into what its intended to be...Its not afraid to go against the modern grain, and that more than anything is why I appreciate it so much. If you were a fan of the originals, it is impossible to not be happy with the campaign imo (again, only half way through so far, though)...and if you weren't or are younger and it wasn't how you were introduced to the genre...then don't be surprised if its beyond different to what you're used to.

affrogamer3649d ago

it's obviously for extra clicks. ANNOYING AS HELL! I've decided to never click on any of those whatever in progress ever again.

NotEvenMyFinalForm3649d ago (Edited 3649d ago )

They probably get more clicks from the fanboys battling it out in the comment section, the clicks of the curious people and then more clicks when the review's actually out.

These reviews in progress annoy the fk out of me tho.

uncharted563649d ago

Are you guys serious? So you complain when they release a review of a game with multiplayer that has problems before launch. Now they are doing this now to make sure that the review reflects whether the mp is working or not on launch and people are still complaining :/ smh you seriously can't satisfy anyone esp when it comes to gaming community

rezzah3649d ago

It helps them get more views, think of it like 2 for 1. Plus the reaction to the first part can change their review for the second part (make it more positive, etc).

The single player alone deserves much more than a 7.

I would give it a solid 9.

I grew up playing Doom and this one is a perfect blend of the classic play style with modern tropes.

The very fast paced speed, no reloading, and no ADS really make it feel classic while the addition of brutal/highly rewarding melee kills, upgradable/modifiable weapons and suit, and of course the graphics make it modern enough to please the newer age.

This is truly the best they could have possibly done to bring Doom into the new generation while also keeping fans of the old-school happy.

MRMagoo1233649d ago

well I think there will be a few reviews that don't even come close to what you think the game is. I played doom when it was new and to me it feels nothing like doom the mp modes leave a lot to be desired as well

fanboysmackdown3649d ago

I've played through three levels and I would rate it much higher but everyone has their own feedback. The pace is unbelievable, weapons are kickass and the graphics are amazing.....I am impressed. All DOOM, no gloom!

game4funz3649d ago

I'm only a couple levels in and no way this is a 7

I just think people are too used to storytelling games and cod like shooters.

Exploration is cool, gunplay is solid like in wolfenstein, enemy variety is there, lots of customization, lots of extras and challenges.

I keep hitting R for reloading and forget there is no reload button in this game. No reloading at all which is a nice change from the norm.

Awesome game. For me it's a 9 so far.. Definitely a game I'll be replaying.

The Doom Marine is pissed off with this review

Darkwatchman3649d ago

You realize there's a thing called pacing and overstaying you're welcome. MAYBE it's amazing for a few levels, but after 10+ hours it could drag if it's not paced properly so you're just prematurely judging it too highly based on a very small slice of the game.

fanboysmackdown3649d ago (Edited 3649d ago )

MAYBE you like jumping and climbing simulators like the one that came out last week. This is DOOM for Xrist sakes and anyone who's ever played any Doom game knows exactly what they're getting pace and story wise, in other words.......no story and balls to the walls action just like I expected, so don't try to shit on our fun happy pants.

game4funz3649d ago (Edited 3647d ago )

What part of 9/10 so far didn't you get from my comment. I just put in another few hours and my impression hasn't changed.

Edit: And now I am near the end. Just played the most epic fps boss fight in the longest time. Still a 9/10

Allsystemgamer3649d ago

Funny thing is the pacing is perfect. Constant level changes. Exploration. Fast movement. Secrets. Great gunplay that changes throughout the game. New enemies until the end that all behave differently. 3 unique boss fights. Etc etc.

Darkwatchman3649d ago

What the hell are you talking about??? Doom is my most anticipated game of the year, but that doesn't mean you can blindly say the campaign is 9/10 after just a few levels of a roughly 10-14 hour game. It CAN get boring later. IT CAN drag. It CAN have poorly designed levels later on. IT CAN having boring encounters later on. You're just assuming too much right off the bat based on a small slice. There's a reason reviews of games aren't given until AFTER they are completed. Just reviewing after a small portion of the game is not representative of the quality of the game as whole. It does not mean it will keep the same quality up through the entire game. Jeez, all the thumbs down because I made a legitimate point??? People judge a game's quality so prematurely. It's funny.

fanboysmackdown3649d ago

Only thing dragging on are your replies.

MRMagoo1233649d ago (Edited 3649d ago )

and fanboy reverts to insults because you have valid points, that's the way it always goes when debating with people of lower intellect, they can't argue a fact and opinion so the point turns into "well uh......you suck and smell bad waaaaa!"

Darkwatchman3649d ago

I've played plenty of games in my life that were "Eh. This is mediocre" after a few levels. By the end of the game, I was saying "wow. That was good"

Conversely, I've played plenty of games that were "wow. Glorious" after a few levels and by the end I was sick of it. If you still think it's a 9/10 campaign after completing it, then that's fair. However, to say it's a 9/10 now after a small portion is very premature and unrepresentative of the game's quality.

Silly gameAr3649d ago

@fanboysmackdown

Stop being so sensitive and dragging other games into this because you feel insecure. No one is crapping on Doom or your fun.

Darkwatchman3649d ago (Edited 3649d ago )

Seriously. No one even mentioned any other game. He get really defensive really quickly. He assumed I'm not into the kind of game DOOM is. I AM. I got hyped when I found out it wouldn't have cinematic cutscenes because all I wanted in Doom was straight up action, HOWEVER the game's environments still have to be well designed. The game's encounters still have to be fun. The game still has to be paced appropriately and be an appropriate length. Fun gameplay in single player only gets you so far. I think the Shadow Warrior reboot was excellent and it was a roughly 16 hour game for me. I loved it all the way through, however it always dropped you in interesting locations that made for engaging encounters with enemies. If the game's level design for more lazy as it passed and it lasted 40 hours instead of under 20, it would likely be a drag no matter how fun the core gameplay is.

UnHoly_One3648d ago

Yeah I'm not done yet either, probably more than half way through, though... And I am in love with it.

I'm pretty sure this is my favorite shooter ever.

It's a damn shame the multiplayer is ruined with all the modern day loadout BS, instead of just having weapons on the map like the old days.

MasterD9193649d ago

9/10 for me...the game is just kickass fun. I've yet to encounter a boring part. Hell, even the multiplayer isn't as bad as people say it was. Sure, it's not going to replace any other multiplayer game, but still.

Also, go to hell IGN.

Kingdomcome2473649d ago

It sounds like they already went there, and didn't care for it too much. I'm loving it.

Levii_92367d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil366d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb366d ago (Edited 366d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

After watching Scavengers Reign? The answer is unequivocally yes. I really want something out of left field but I think people are too afraid to shake things up.

It's what I love about Shadowrun and Black Mirror. Love, Death, and Robots proved that there's an audience for stuff that doesn't fit the mold.

Gamingsince1981455d ago

Weird games in general we don't get enough of, we need more games like Katamari and Mr domino, things like that
