What on Earth is Wrong with Nintendo?

Over the past few weeks news revolving around not only Nintendo, but the Nintendo NX, has been more than depressing.

Why is it that their desire to hold back on announcing anything until they feel they're ready somehow means that there's something "wrong" with them?

Getting depressed over a lack of news when they've made it clear that they're holding back until they're ready, is just plain silly.XD

LOL_WUT3670d ago

Because prematurely announcing the existence of the NX is doing them more harm than good. The WiiU was struggling to sell as it is, but now it's going to need a miracle. I also don't see how skipping the holidays for a 2016 launch and E3 in general is going to work towards their advantage. If anything they're setting themselves up for another disastrous launch ;)

wonderfulmonkeyman3670d ago

I'm not saying you're wrong, but to be perfectly fair, if they had not announced it early, it would have just allowed people to assume that they were DROPPING consoles for mobile game development.
That was the big rumor flying around at that time, after all. Not announcing something in hardware, during a time when the Wii U wasn't doing so hot, would have just added oil to that particular fire.

It was a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation.

Ephex033670d ago (Edited 3670d ago )

The NX is not ready, either that or Nintendo is not ready to show it, otherwise they would have by now. They said it was a "brand new concept", AKA gimmick, and that it was would be selling at profit right at launch. They also pushed it back to have more games, and rumors saying it's getting Wii U ports. If people think pushing it past the holidays a few months will mean it will launch with several entirely new games than everyone is getting hopes up. Obviously they are porting over more Wii U stuff. Even before Emily Rodgers recently said it was closer to the X1 in specs, there was a older rumor that said the same thing, so that's 2 sources said it's closer to X1 in specs. Let's hope it's a handheld or handheld hybrid and not a console, cause if it's a console only, it's already confirmed gimmick, underpowered, lacking games. Sound's familiar right? lol

A Handheld with Nintendo's entire library, console developers and their handheld developers would be a real winner. Nintendo won't beat the NEO this holiday, Sony has the console market on Lock-down. Nintendo has the handheld market on lockdown. Nintendo would be wise to focus on the market they are strong in, similar to what Sony is doing with the Ps4 and the NEO, Sony is solidifying their grip on the console market, but expanding it and adding more hardware options. The NX being weaker than the Xbox 1 would be perfectly acceptable if it's a handheld. I just hope they would take notes from the VITA's design and not the 3DS, 3DS hardware was underpowered and overpriced.

It needs to be a Handheld or some kind of Handheld/console hybrid. They can't fully invest into another console at this time, would be suicide against the NEO

lizard812883670d ago

I agree. Skipping the holidays and E3 isn't doing them good. It isn't like they can use the Wiu's momentum either to get people to buy the NX either. They have what, Mario Color Splash as their big holiday hit. They have 3 games this year that are pretty small and niche, SF0 & TSM. Color Splash looks like Sticker Star 2, which is leaving people with a sour taste in their mouths. Nintendo does this all the time, which is starting to get annoying. Sony & M$ continue to support their dying consoles, when the gen flips over, Nintendo on the other hand, kills their consoles about 2 years early, due to shifting focus on the new one, and riding 0 momentum into it. They have had this issue since it went from N64 to GCN. E3 would have been the best time to show it off and get people excited about it.

Stealth20k3670d ago

"I also don't see how skipping the holidays for a 2016 launch and E3 in general is going to work towards their advantage."

Not launching during the holiday is fantastic. PS2, DS, GBA, most of the top selling systems do not launch during the holidays to control supply and demand. Pachter agrees. The Holiday AFTER launch is more fruitfull.

E3 is not relevant. This year has less devs attending then ever before. It might not be an event in a few years.

pcz3670d ago

the NX will be nintendo's final console

_-EDMIX-_3670d ago

"Because prematurely announcing the existence of the NX is doing them more harm than good"

Agreed. I just can't understand why they even wasted so much time and money saying such a thing. They basically just sent Wii U to its grave. The move they made saying that even LAST YEAR about NX, pretty much is costing them money in lost sales.

Someone isn't buying a Wii U because of this....that is something to worry about.

Then on top of that to skip E3?

Seriously, Nintendo needs to just write a book titles "How to screw up you're business 101". Some of what they are messing up is very basic and staple business plans, like high school business class folks.

Marketing something before it arrives has several benefits.

A- Company can get start up money from investors (doesn't apply to Nintendo).
B- Generates excitement about an upcoming event where the platform will be debuted (Nintendo is skipping E3)
C- Gets mysterious buzz or um "hype" from being talked about in terms of what it "could be" (doesn't work with existing concepts, ie they have a damn console, thus talking about something NEW will take sales away from an existing product for NO REASON)
D- If the product is also sorta a service, it can let users customize their items or even envision what they can do with said product (Nintendo doesn't really apply to this either)

So lots of reason to announce something early, but I"m sorry none of that even applies to Nintendo.

Now that Nintendo has their attention........what do they do now? Where can I buy NX? Oh no pre-order? Where is the info on it? Soooo why on earth did they announce something they don't even actually have? What is stopping someone from reading what Nintendo officially states and confusing a rumor about their next platform?

This is why companies don't actually talk about rumors or announce crap like that. So give you're consumers a year heads up to NOT buy you're goods? Seriously? To say NX is coming march 2017, yet have NOTHING to show about it, is also to say its not ready, if its not ready , then couldn't that march 2017 release date be more of a placeholder? Soooo they can predict 100% no issues will happen for the next year? Really? I'm sorry but a lot of this just sounds like wishful thinking and pure classic Nintendo BS. There are logical reasons why companies don't do this...

_-EDMIX-_3670d ago

@wonder- "I'm not saying you're wrong, but to be perfectly fair, if they had not announced it early, it would have just allowed people to assume that they were DROPPING consoles for mobile game development."

Thats nice...

At least it would have still made it look like Wii U was still getting support netting them more sales then now,it would have also gave their engineers time to finish the NX. I don't buy that they have this ironclad release date.

PS4 added 4gigs of ram based on developer input, XONE removed its DRM features because of fan input (and outrage), MS also added more ram to 360 because of developer input. So I don't get why they are ironclad almost a YEAR a way from a release.

Please, look up why companies don't waste time talking about rumors.

When PS4 was announced ALL OF IT WAS, here is what it is, what is in it, it can play used games etc.

When XONE was announced ,ALL OF IT WAS, release date, a few games, features etc.

So right now, we have Nintendo confirming a console, with no games, no information on the features or specs etc. Thus, what They've just done, is handed the news to consumers...

YOU CONTROL THE NEWS! If you are a company, CONTROL WHAT INFORMATION EXIST! They basically announced some, yet left so much unannounced, that they might have well serioulsly just NEVER ANNOUNCED it in the first place. They are doing more harm then good because as of right now, people are mixing what is official, with what is rumored.

When PS4 and XONE were announced, besides the price, all those rumors where either revealed or crushed.

Even some of Nintendo's statements lend to some of those rumors. ie "NX is more then just a replacement for Wii U and 3DS" OH so the rumor about the hybrid is true?

Oh a rumor about it having no disk.....like a handheld.

Oh a rumor of them using ARM instead of x86...LIKE A HANDHELD. Sooo don't you see just how stupid it actually is to announce such a thing so early? They've just handheld parts of information for folks to speculate on, to the mass public. They just hurt their own marketing campaign by even saying anything. You'll see, over the next year or so, when more and more of those rumors start to pop up as confirmed, people now will have months and months to decided to not buy a NX. Something that would have not been the case with a smooth 6 month announcement to reveal campaign Here is what it is, here is what it does, when you can get it, price etc.

Well.....thats gone now, they've allowed for folks to speak for them since they want to release info in piecemeal. It legit would had just been better to say NOTHING and have all the real information about it just released 1 one event.

pcz3670d ago

nintendo are just trolling us with these fake info leaks about it being pathetically weak and 'almost comparable' to an x1.

in fact, the new captain america: civil war film was rendered in real time using an NX dev kit.

so its actually a feature length advert of what the nx is capable of. if you watch the credits at the end of the film, right at the very end it says 'rendered in real time on a nx'

but in the final retail version of the nx, nintendo will disable all the special hardware features, meaning it will just look little different to x1.

I really feel like Nintendo should be a little more urgent with releasing the NX, even if it means it's not fully ready yet. I think it's a huge mistake to miss the holidays. Just look and PS4 and X1, both of those were rushed but still had successful launches.

Ephex033670d ago

They can't release the NX with no games. The Wii U launched with mostly old 3rd party ports and that was also a factor in it's early demise. The NX can't simply go up against the NEO without being fully prepared, TBH I'm not sure if even waiting for a solid launch line up will save them from the NEO at this point, but it's better than releasing at the same time and having nothing to offer.

Stealth20k3670d ago

You think the idiot commenters here understand business and gaming? They do not. All they know is trolling.

Ruggadagod3670d ago

That DS and Wii money made them go retarded.

Ruggadagod3670d ago

Are you upset at truth? The Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii made Nintendo so much money from 2004(DS) and 2006(Wii) - 2013 that Nintendo can be lazy as hell with another home console and still not be in trouble sadly. Sony or Microsoft does not have that privilege and thus have to actually keep pushing forward while Nintendo can sit on their ass for generations.

Stealth20k3670d ago

DS/Wii? The systems with the best first party content in Nintendo history?

No game company has ever reached the heights of DS/WII in terms of acclaim and sales.

Ruggadagod3670d ago

They made so much money they got lazy. Simple as that. The DS is good but the Wii is garbage.

pcz3670d ago

i dont think its a coincidence that iwata died, and during that exact time, nintendo were in decline. and by decline, i mean, vertical nose dive/free fall.

it seems nintendo have lost their captain and are now at the mercy of the waves. its not looking good

Realplaya3670d ago

The question isn't what's wrong with Nintendo but more or less what's wrong with these people online with these articles that try to look deeper and make something out of nothing.

Zelda must be a huge game in scope I think it's going to have the biggest game world to datewith years of Zelda games all built into one game.

Now as far as the NX release window. I honestly believe that the system was supposed to come out even later than March. It's possible that the system is still releasing early. The only people complaining about the release date are the ones who put it out there that they new for a fact the system was def releasing holiday 2016.

As far as the games who didn't think Zelda would be on the NX hell I find it funny people think they know everything because of a guess. It's not a guess but common sense.when hasn't Zelda ever been made only to appear on a next platform at some point.

As far as the specs Nintendo is the only ones that know these and whenever they reveal the system they won't talk about them. To be honest people should respect that it's the only way they can offer something different from the competition.

Vasto3670d ago (Edited 3670d ago )

Nintendo simply is not the same company they use to be.

I grew up on NES, Super Nintendo and N64. Gamecube was one of my favorite consoles ever but that is when they started to lose focus. Gamecube was also the last Nintendo system I ever bought and I do not think I will ever own another.

Nintendo use to be just like Sony. It was all about the players but now it is like they do not care what people want.

We are Nintendo and we know what is best, you do not. The only thing I hate is that I can no longer play Zelda because it is the only game they have I want to play but I am not going to buy a console for 1 game.

/smh

Stealth20k3670d ago

You think Sony is "All about the players"?

Vita got ditched after a year, and after 2 years, Sony is finally supporting PS4..............They do not listen in terms of reviving series, ect.

Vasto3670d ago

Vita?

I do not buy handheld systems and do not care about them.

Talking about consoles because that is where Nintendo does not get it.

Sony made one mistake with PS3 and they learned from that one mistake.

How many will Ninendo keep making? Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii U and now it looks like the NX will be another.

Sony does not listen in terms of reviving series?

They are bringing back Shenmue, Final Fantasy VII Remake and The Lost Guardian. I am willing to bet Crash is coming. These are all 4 franchises that the fans have been asking for.

Nintendo is done.

Stealth20k3670d ago (Edited 3670d ago )

"They are bringing back Shenmue, Final Fantasy VII Remake and The Lost Guardian. I am willing to bet Crash is coming. These are all 4 franchises that the fans have been asking for.

Sony has nothing to do with Shenmue or Final Fantasy. The lost Guardian is vaporware with no release date for 10 years........So basically you have no point.

PS4? Lousy online deals unlike Wii U, And no first party exclusives for the first 2 years....yeah they really listened.

All Sony has is PS4 hardware sales. Nintendo has software, handhelds, amiibo. Quite frankly Nintendo is in a better position longterm than sony is

Vasto3670d ago (Edited 3670d ago )

lmao,

I guess we was all dreaming when they showed these games at E3.

Pretty sad when Microsoft is out doing Nintendo.

Stealth20k3670d ago

"lmao, I guess we was all dreaming when they showed these games at E3.

Pretty sad when Microsoft is out doing Nintendo."

Showing a game and being involved in publishing and dev is different............wow.....I did not think anyone this dumb still posted. Thanks for proving me wrong.

"Pretty sad when Microsoft is out doing Nintendo"

X1 is on pace to sell half of what 360 did. They just shut down studios and cancelled 2 games they announced at E3 last year.

Nintendo? Already released a GOTY contender game and 6 other very good games....not even June.....IGN, Gamespot, ect already have them as publisher of the year.

Vasto3670d ago

So now we are name calling?

I never said anything about Sony publishing or being involved in development. You do not know what is going on between Sony and the developers of these games.

What we do know is that these games are coming to Sony's console and that is all that matters.

Dude, you are just a butthurt fanboy that is jeolous of Sony's success.

I feel sorry for you. The only person that is all over this article trying to defend them.

Sony has crushed Nintendo and will keep doing it.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle33d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
