What Would DOOM's Failure Mean For id Software

Does id Software have a chance in Hell of surviving if DOOM is ultimately a disappointment?

I don't think it'll be another Daikatana, but it'll be hard to live up to the original.

dead_pixels3661d ago

Here's hoping it does manage to, but this relative radio silence regarding the single player portion of the game is certainly scary.

thekhurg3661d ago

The later the review embargo the less confidence they have in their game IMO

NapalmSanctuary3661d ago

@thekhurg Thats not necessarily true but it is a possibility. Its also possible the the head guys are nervous cause its not enough like CoD.

EvilAsh3661d ago

I wish I knew what people expect out of the new Doom. Seems like it's the same old Doom we know and love with an online component that will get better every update as long as id Software listens to the fan base.

Bolts3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

Agreed. It looks great to me.

JMPetrequin3661d ago

This thing has at no point been any of what the originals were.

axesofevil3661d ago

Yeah, but I think that hope got tacked on to the game, unfairly. It doesn't help that it has the reboot title of simply DOOM and not DOOM 4 or something, but I think modern audiences are tired of military shooter drivel and need some button mashers to remind them gaming can be fun again.

thereapersson3661d ago

It looks enough like DooM and Painkiller had a baby, and I'm sure it'll be fun.

axesofevil3661d ago

That's exactly what I want plus it has the Serious Sam 3 melee kills, which hopefully won't wear out immediately like the mortal kombat X-ray moved or anything similar.

joab7773661d ago

That's the problem. For the life of me I can't understand why they didn't simply include a classic mode. Thus way, everyone is happy, and if people don't like it, at least those that loved the original and it's arena gameplay would form a nice little core.

I'm afraid many newer gamers may not like it, and older gamers will Haye the changes. And belive it or not, the sp does matter and we have heard nothing at all.

Yui_Suzumiya3660d ago

Actually I believe you can turn gory kills off if you don't want them

Kleptic3660d ago

I'm kind of lost...have people simply not watched any of the single player previews that have come up for like 2 weeks?

Nearly all information about single player you could want is available...and it answers many of the questions listed in some of these posts...

The 'classic' mode is baked in...all the modern stuff can be turned off (glory kills, weapon upgrades, runes, etc.)...you don't have to use any of that to complete the campaign...

there are no cutscenes, and the story is passive...you can explore and get information about what is going on, but you don't have to. They say the story elements are deeper than you may expect, but do not interfere with the game in any way at all.

It is nothing like Doom 3...there is platforming elements, puzzles, and 'arenas' that get triggered releasing waves of enemies...survival is focused on movement, not limiting ammo (ala Doom 3's bs)...

the only aspect not really touched on are the boss battles...they say they're in there, but didn't talk about it more than that. The only real thing leaked about it was the artist rendering of a new 'icon of sin'; that alone is worth the playthrough imo...

Its not going to fail. The game looks and plays great. I don't understand the hate towards this game at all.

dead_pixels3661d ago

I don't think there's any hate for it, at least that I haven't seen. The main issues are Bethesda's decision to send out review code on launch day and the extremely scarce bits of the single player portion that's been showcased.

That said, I think many have every right to be concerned, but I definitely hope the game delivers.

Nivekki3661d ago

Maybe they see the writing on the wall that reviewers aren't seen as reflective of the general publics opinion. That reviews are, by and large, just some random persons opinion.

Or maybe the game's shit.

We won't know until release day.

Pick your poison.

KesMonkey3661d ago

You may well not have seen it, but there is an extraordinary amount of hatred out there for this new DOOM. Just look at the Steam reviews of the beta, for a start. I don't really get the hate either. It seems that many of the haters wanted this game to be Quake V.

sullynathan3661d ago (Edited 3660d ago )

The game is shit and a disgrace to doom

DLConspiracy3661d ago

Wah... you complain about this game a lot.

Yui_Suzumiya3660d ago

Neither do I. Day one for me :3

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio21d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing21d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit21d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing21d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
