Will there ever be a better console than the Xbox 360?

"The Xbox 360 was the best console I’ve ever owned. From the N64 to the Xbox One, from handhelds to PCs, I’ve never had a better gaming system than the 360. I think that this is the general consensus for many, and you’d struggle to argue that many consoles were, or are, better."

There are 2 systems, PS4 and PS2

ABizzel13683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

As much as I enjoyed the 360, there are several systems that were much better during their time, and even to this date IMO.

The PS2 and SNES are arguably the best platforms ever. They had unrivaled dominance in the market, unrivaled game selection and exclusives, unrivaled diversity of games, and pure golden eras of gaming.

The PSOne, N64, and PS3 IMO are also arguably better tiered than the 360.

The writer and everyone else are entitled to their own opinion, and considering the first console the writer owned (N64), and the games he enjoys the most (Left 4 Dead, Battlefield, COD, Elder Scrolls) it makes sense why he chose the 360 as his fav.

I think the 360 is easily one of the top 5 consoles of all time if you exclude it's technically issues, and only look at it's achievements (pun intended), but IMO it's hard to ever classify any other console over the PS2 and SNES as best console.

My top 10

1. PS2 (Paved the road for gaming as it is today for EVERY core gamer)
2. SNES (The greatest achievement of retro gaming)
3. PS3 (through all the hate, 2006 - 2009 were still good years for PS3 owners, 2009 -> dominated)
4. N64 (Many greatest games of all time contenders on this platform, and gave way to 3D gaming)
5. 360 (Paved the way for online console gaming and multimedia today)
6. PSOne (introduced gaming to the mainstream)
7. NES (introduced gaming to the home of millions around the world)
8. Genesis (introduced the world to the first real gaming rivalry and it was a great competitor)
9. Wii (introduced the world to casual gaming, and thus mobile gaming)
10. Dreamcast / Gamecube (both failed consoles, with great gaming experiences)

n64 had some great games but the PS1 was definitely a better console over all. While the n64 had certain things going for it like no load times and better graphics*, the PS1 though had much better sound, FMV's, INFINITELY better controls (dual analog ALONE doubles this value), and it's games could essentially be larger in time and scale. ~600MB of space for a game vs 2-64MB max on the n64 is a big difference and you could tell with it's games.

So I think that on a graphical level the n64 certainly had it's perks in certain areas but the user experience on the PS1 I think was better.

As far as games go, well, it's really no contest IMO. Sure, the n64 has AWESOME games, no doubt. But for my gaming needs the PS1 had it going on. Had great stealth games like MGS1, best simulators like Gran Turismo and Ace Combat (I know it's not a sim but what did the n64 have flight wise that was as good?), better RPG's, better fighting games, etc.

Yeah...n64 was awesome and I love it to this day but as a over all package I think the PS1 takes the top spot.

Dreamcast will always be my favorite though. Games like Shenmue and Sonic Adventures and Soul Calibur really hit a sweet spot with me. Before Shenmue there hadn't been a game like it at all, especially one so detailed and technically astonishing. I think Dreamcast takes it for my #1 just because as a young kid it just blew my mind. Was really that "next-gen" console for me. Sure the PS1 and n64 looked nice but I remember thinking that even when they were fresh how they still somehow looked "dated". The Dreamcast was gorgeous and crisp and provided detail fast paced gaming like I had never seen before. Really stuck with me like nothing else had or even to this point has.

* Depends. It had much better texture filtering and could push more polygons but the PS1 looked sharper and thanks to it's disk space could have more levels/better pre-rendered scenes i.e. Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, etc.

BattleAxe3683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

Other than the PS3, no. PS4 is the fastest selling console, and it's slightly more powerful, but it's not really all that good, especially when we're talking about exclusives and 1st party games. Sony pulled a fast one, and it worked well with people who have no awareness of space and time.

PS Plus doesn't offer the high quality games that Xbox Live offers, most of Sony's key first party franchises have either disappeared or have been neglected for a few quick bucks like Killzone: ShadowFall(yuk!), Socom, MAG, Heavenly Sword, Syphon Filter, Resistance, Little Big Planet 3, Motorstorm, Twisted Metal, The Getaway, and on and on.

They're putting less money into the first party games that made me a fan in the first place, and they're now relying heavily on Indie studios and third party exclusives to some degree, a practice that Microsoft was regularly raked over the coals for doing, with the biggest example being Call of Duty DLC one month exclusivity. Now, watch as Sony diverts resources from traditional screen viewing games to Virtual Reality games.

You'd have to have been wearing pretend VR goggles 24 hours per day, not to recognize what's been going on since the start of this generation, and even slightly before. Lets hope the Uncharted 4 doesn't let everyone down. Uncharted 3 was a step down from the previous two games, so hopefully the trend doesn't continue. And don't be fooled by graphics, learn from games like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Driveclub. Infamous might be ok, but it looks nowhere near as good as the previous two, at least as far as gameplay and the lack of content goes.

I'd definitely throw in DC as one of the better consoles from a hardware/feature perspective, and place it over the 360 in terms of hardware because I feel it's hardware was more innovative to new concepts, whereas 360 conceptualized those concepts into mass market appeal. The DC however was quite innovative for it's time. The original Xbox IMO was more in line with being innovative, but it just took obvious trends and integrated them really well into the actual system. Unfortunately for DC it didn't have enough time on the market to gain the kind of gaming library like the PS2, PS3, or 360 did.

Otherwise, I'd put it in no particular order

PS2
SNES
NES
DC
and then maybe 360 and PS3 since they were essentially the same with one having better media features and one having a better services structure.

That being said, this is the second article in as many days claiming that the 360 was somehow the best console ever or of it's time. Both statements are impossible to prove or qualify, or outright wrong on best of all time, as the common consensus does seem to lean towards PS2 being the best ever....even among many Xbox fans.

Edit @ POG

I'm saying it's actual time on the market wasn't that long. It was dropped rather quickly and even Sega only supported it half-heartedly after a few years. It stayed out there almost as long as any console did, but it's relevant time in the market was pretty short. Kind of like the VIta. It's been around for a while, but any support is from 3rd party, with the console maker barely taking any interest to sell the things.

I have nothing against the DC, love the system even today. Just know that it never achieved what it was capable of due to the failures of Sega.

Pogmathoin3683d ago

Rainslacker, how can you say that DC had no time on the market, then place 4th, against some seriously good competition....everything is opinion of course, but most of the lists here are about blind fanboyism, not logic. I may be seen as an Xbox fan, but clearly to me, PsOne by a mile.... It totally changed the landscape, changed how the world saw gaming, and showed how the future can be..... The rest since then has been tit for tat.... Before, Sega and Snes were fine, at that stage I was into Amiga, which had an incredible demo scene, along with Atari ST.... But really, PsOne.... All others since then was only about what console had what game.... PS2 blew you away with GTA...... Original Xbox had Halo..... DC had promise, but Sega pulled the plug.....by that stage, consoles were becoming a popularity contest, not true innovation.....

9. Xbox

GBA

I'm not even sure about the order after PC, started on NES though.

Nope, not even close because the PS2 never came close to the abilities of the Xbox 360. Then there's the PS4 while at some point may match the 360 abilities hasn't even got halfway to the mark!

rainslacker3683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

PS2 gen is often referred to as the golden age of gaming, mostly due to the PS2.

What about last gen will ever be called a golden age? People complained constantly about everything, and never seemed to be happy, so it's hard to imagine people will look back in fondness like they do with the PS2. Sure nostalgia will take hold, and people will remember the good times, but that doesn't remove all the crap that went down last gen, and a lot of that crap brought the consoles themselves down, and truthfully, the 360 helped usher a lot of that bad stuff in. It's not their fault entirely, but it became accepted with the help of the 360.

360 was a fine console outside initial quality issues. It had plenty of memorable games. but nothing about it beats the PS2 in terms of games or general content with the generation.

tee_bag2423683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

They're not referring to the consoles abilities. By that metric the X1 is a better console than the 360 too.

Anyway for me the best console in no particular order was the SNES, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Original Xbox with XBMC, 360.

But the amount of quality games the PS2 had was something to behold. Compare that to the newer consoles and I really feel like we miss out these days.

1 PS2
2 SNES
3 PS1
4 PS3
5 NES
6 GENESIS
7 XBOX
8 GAMECUBE
9 360

I can't any of current consoles because it's too early to add them.

LOL_WUT3683d ago

No N64 in that list? I'm disappoint! ;)

Aceman183683d ago

@lol_wut

I actually nvr owned the N64, but I did play and beat Mario 64, and Zelda OoT. These are the only two games I played for the system which my brother had.

Vegamyster3683d ago

Yup, that said it was replaced free of cost twice for me.

MRMagoo1233683d ago

shouldn't have needed too tho.

Rude-ro3683d ago

Only due to a warranty forced upon them so that would not have to do a recall...

Vegamyster3683d ago

@MRMagoo123

Of course, just glad that they just didn't screw everyone that bought one.

WelkinCole3683d ago

I think it was the most defective product period.

madpuppy3683d ago

I think that the Yugo GV might have been worse than the 360, a Yugoslavian built, re-branded Fiat 127.

_-EDMIX-_3683d ago

Agreed. With XONE having some form of BC, by DEFAULT XONE is their best console ever made.

Its more powerful, plays 360 games, plays XONE games.....doesn't break if you look at it lol

johndoe112113683d ago

Not just the most defective console but one of the most defective electronic devices ever. http://arstechnica.com/gami...

tee_bag2423683d ago

It sure was. It was a love hate relationship with the 360 for me. PS3 was a far better built console but in retrospect I got far more gaming done on the 360. The heap of junk died but got replaced for free. Still have it in the shed.

CaptainObvious8783683d ago

It was rushed to market knowingly defective and MS didn't care because they wanted a head start. MS severely disadvantaging customers for the sake of money and the author has the gall to call it the best console ever.

MS basically dropped all 1st party support only half way through the generation, rehashing the same IPs over and over. and the author has the gall to call it the best console ever.

DC7773683d ago

The original white one was a loud plastic piece of junk.

Quality wise it was easily a leader in something all right.

NarooN3682d ago

I remember the constant, copious overheating of the original model, the insane jet turbine-levels of noise, and even regular reports of the power bricks failing or catching on fire. Yet somehow it's the best system according to the author, lol.

Same here, I've sent them off twice and got replacement consoles, after the warranty ran out I just started buying them used off Ebay.

MRMagoo1233683d ago

and ps1 and ps2 and snes and mega drive (genesis)

3683d ago
rainslacker3683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

I think the 360 had more compelling games than the X1. However, it's still early in the X1's life to really use that as a metric for the whole generation. What I liked about the 360 is it's games seemed fresh though. The new stuff is just reusing that, while throwing in a nice looking TPS with a interesting game play mechanic that offers nothing new. Nothing on the X1 brings the excitement like the original Gears of War did(a generational defining game), or even Halo before it on the OGXbox which carried over to be even better on the 360. Then we had things like Mass Effect and BioShock which really set the console apart. X1 currently hasn't really had any of that, and those defining exclusives just aren't as exciting as they once were.

JJShredder3684d ago

As much as I liked the 360, unless you were born in the mid to late nineties and just didn't play it, the SNES was hands down, the best console.....ever... in my eyes.

Unmatched developer support and such an amazing variety of games. The games then also didn't need online patches and DLC and were complete experiences out of the box. Controller was perfect for said games as well.

Yes, I know...old man and all that jazz. Get off my lawn.

3683d ago Replies(1)
OoglyBoogly3683d ago

I think the PS2 is like the updated SNES. Where the SNES had the huge variety of games the PS2 did the same but just had more going for it. Larger more expansive games, 3D graphics, controls that are 100x better, better sound, etc. Even to a lesser extent the PS1 fits this mold as well.

So yeah, if you were around "back in the day" the SNES was pretty awesome. For the younger ones among us I can see the PS2 being their SNES. Hell, even being around in the SNES days even I have to say that the PS2 is my sort of SNES...though I have to say that I think the first console I actually owned was a PS1 (just wasn't really THAT in to gaming then).

rainslacker3683d ago

I think I found more magical memories n the SNES or NES. But I was young then, and the SNES days I was more into TGCD. But PS2 I found more moments of actual real memories I held on to as time went on. Maybe it was because I was older, or maybe because the games were more at a level where they made more of an impact.

While I never owned a 360, I was active enough to pay attention, and had enough friends were I wasn't immune to what it had to offer. That being said, nothing about last gen would give me the feelings that I would consider any of it better than some of the systems from prior gens. The fact we can argue between SNES, PS2, NES, Genesis and still respect that in some ways we're all right is very telling of just how good those consoles were for their time. Talk about Xbox 360, and most of what you see is people saying no, or going back to things like the SNES, PS2, NES, PS2, Genesis, etc, with only the most devout Xbox fans actually saying it's the greatest console of all time.

I'm cool with them feeling that, but their fervor for trying to state such a thing is really offputting considering the competition involved, and I wouldn't doubt that most people that actually feel that way, probably started their memorable gaming life on the 360.

notachance3683d ago

They are a close match for me though. SNES and PS2 both deserve the top spot for console king, unlike this delusion Xbox fanboys shared that the most defective electronic product ever somehow deserve the best console title, not to mention barren games for the last few years of its time, it's a joke.
