Quantum Break's Microsoft Product Placement Is Killing Me

"Recently released for Xbox One and Windows PC, Quantum Break combines a video game and a live-action television series to create an entirely new way to advertise Microsoft Surface Tablets and Windows Phones."

Kurisu3674d ago

Maybe Monarch bought Microsoft :p

poppinslops3672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

Paul was rich, but didn't have enough time to make that kind of money... that said, he probably bought lots of Sony shares back when they were hemorrhaging $$$.

As for this 'killing me' headline - well, it's beyond stupid... I mean, really? Images of phones are killing you?
Go see your doctor... or a good psychiatrist.

Product placement boosts your budget, which in-turn improves the quality of your product... Quantum Break's 'ads' are far less noticable than shows like Code Geass or Steins;Gate, which were littered with Pizza Hut stores/boxes/billboards and such - but they were really great animes, especially for a format that often struggles to secure funding.

memots3672d ago

Exactly.
The other day the wife was watching that Mindy tv show and i noticed all the people on there were using windows phones. So what ? Plenty of other show have apple plastered everywhere.

Aloy-Boyfriend3672d ago

Disagree!!! Why would Remedy be worrying about more budget to improve quality with a juggernaut like MS backing their game? I know this industry is going to shit but no! This is just wrong

The last thing we need is games adversiting brands we are already tired of seeing outside or on TV. Nissan? Nationwide? Pizza hut adds in my games WTF!!?

This is video games. It's a virtual world we get immenser and even forget about ours and all the hassle we go through. How can real life stuff be sneaking that world?

We still use that exuse to cope with DLC and MTs in our games, it only gets worse by the day. And this? This is just another low for gaming

SniperControl3672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

There is a difference with product placement and outright advertising a product, outside the swimming pool where that Nissan leaf is parked to the side of the building, when you press the x button, the camara zooms and pans around to show the car at a "model" shot, just like it would be displayed in a magazine ad. Lol or when we see the same car plugged into a generator to recharge(cant remember which bit, might on the way to the dry docks) Jack even makes a comment about it.

Completely agree with Xikura, Remedy dont need extra funds from adverts, thought ms had deep pockets.

Nissan and ms are notorious for plugging there products in TV shows, One of my favourite shows Fringe was littered with Nissan plugging there vehicles, Hawii Five-0 is also full of cringworthy lingering shots of Surface tablets and phones. Last show, Jerry pulled his Surface from the keyboard section and the camara held on the keyboard for a few seconds.

poppinslops3672d ago

Quantum Break is set in the 'real world', and Remedy needed to use real phones, computers and cars, because these items appear in both the game and the live-action show... might as well get paid to do it, right?

And what's the alternative?
Would you prefer they turned down the money and made a cheaper game?
Or should they have kickstarted production of their own functional 'no-name' products?

AAA videogame development isn't getting any cheaper... Even R* cuts costs by using 'versions' of actual places/products/people in games like GTA, but they still get sued everytime they 'infringe' on real-world copyrights, not-to-mention the defemation lawsuits.

Your just pissy that it's Microsoft... same goes for whoever wrote this 'article'.

S2Killinit3672d ago

I think the difference is that everybody DOES use Apple phones in the real world.

poppinslops3672d ago

Exactly... kind of hard to imagine Apple funding a Microsoft exclusive.

Aloy-Boyfriend3672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

So you have to be an Xbox fan to tolerate anything and don't disagree? Am I on IGN?

"And what's the alternative?

How about MS being their publisher and owner of the IP(if they are) ensuring the quality with the budget? You are telling me that for quality they need to do this? So much for fanboys always bragging about MS pockets

GTA has always tried to simulate American cities and curture. And as far as I know and seen, there's no product placement or adverts there. You point is invalid (unless you can point me to an example found in GTA of course). Also didn't see anything on Infamous SS Seattle but again, my memory could fail me

At least your TV show hypothesis makes some sense

poppinslops3672d ago

I'm saying that Remedy chose the most cost-effective option available to them... all games have a budget and I'm guessing Remedy went well over their initial estimates - the multiple delays, casting changes (leading to 'reshoots' with their custom mo-cap tech, which isn't cheap), the out-of-nowhere PC version and things like Beth Wilder no longer available as a playable character make me think that Quantum Break cost considerably more than either Microsoft or Remedy expected.

Getting non-Microsoft phones and tablets would have cost money which could have been spent elsewhere, and Nissan probably offered more than Toyota, so it was their crappy car that got a little screen-time... How does that ruin a game?

As for R*, My point was THEY DON'T USE REAL S#!T because if they did they'd spend the rest of their lives in court... that said, the radio stations do use licenced music, which occasionally references actual places, people and products, and that even something as innocuous as 'illegal' background music has landed them in court.

Even the undisputed champions of the industry make compromises... Sam Lake is a f#@kin' auteur, and I don't believe for one second that any of this 'sponsored content' was in any way detrimental to Quantum Break.

THIS is killing me.

Thing about product placement is that it's so obviously a product placement, and often times it deters from the overall experience, or becomes a focus of a scene that could be better served focusing on something more in line with what is considered cinematic. It breaks the immersion.

While QB had a couple places where it was glaringly obvious that time was spent to focus on the product, I didn't actually feel that it was so over used to be annoying. But there were times where it was questionable.

However, other places can use product placement and not be so out of whack, because the products themselves actually fit into the flow of the game/story, and focus isn't drawn to them so much that it's distracting. For instance, James Bond movies now always have Sony phones in them, yet the make and model isn't mentioned, and Bond doesn't sit there holding it up next to his face with a pithy comment. It's worked more naturally into the story...like he gets a phone call, and they show the screen and he answers. Even when Ford sponsored Casino Royale, they made it more into a joke, and it was funny and you didn't think about the product placement....and you know what, he made it seem cool. I'm loathe to use Transformers as an example since it was rife with product placement, but the use of GM cars didn't detract from the story, because...well they were cars. On the other hand, the XBox and Mountain Dew things were so obviously there as product placement that it just didn't work.

How a freaking Nissan on the side of the road, which happens to be in front of a big ass Nissan logo which just looks out of place, and why Jack would care about it given the circumstances is just stupid, and so glaring that it breaks the immersion. I mean, at what point ever has someone ever seen a Nissan and taken the time to look at it, and comment about it in some way? Heck, I love Nissan cars, have owned 3 of them in the past 10 years, and recently almost brought another one but opted for a Ford, but I never have reveled in their awesomeness....particularly the rather mundane ones used in the game.

I don't decry the practice of product placement at all. I agree it can bring needed funds to a production, and mitigate the risks of producing expensive projects. but the use of product placement should just be more natural, and those sponsoring such things need to stay out of the development studio.

As far as being set in the real world, do you think that people are going to notice that that Ford truck is actually a Fjord truck? If focus isn't given to the object, no one is going to care. There was one game on the PS3, can't remember which one, which had "Phony" phones and alarm clocks. Thousands of games and movies release without the need to have branded products taking focus, and people just accept that they are representative of a certain kind of object. If you want real world, then show tons of different kind of cars. Not one brand which happens to conveniently show up everywhere. Sure it's fine to accept money for it, but marginalize it and do it on their own terms. Games are not a nascar race car lineup.

Nissan.

Innovation that excites!

wakeNbake3672d ago

They could have given the guy at least a GTR, lol cruising around in a 350z makes the show look low budget.

Movefasta19933672d ago

350z is a nice car though.

hells_supernova3672d ago

Yeah a 350 not a 370z? They must have gotten pay cuts

rainslacker3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

I actually really like Nissan cars myself. Owned several. Would have another one, but Ford had a better option for the price with better incentives when I went shopping for a new car recently....plus no interest so I can forgo my love of Nissan and have come to appreciate how good Ford cars seem now. The one in the game would never be a consideration for me, and it's hard to imagine most game players would be terribly excited for it. Does seem odd to advertise a rather overpriced hybrid type car in a game targeted at the low cost console market....but hey, marketing people do strange things. However, if I do buy a Nissan again, I'm suing if it's not actually bullet proof. That's false advertising.

ScorpiusX3672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

Don't see an issue its a game they own , why would they not promote other products they own .
would be stupid to do otherwise unless they are getting paid .

343_Guilty_Spark3672d ago

It didn't bother me. Nissan makes great cars that are very popular. The surface and Windows 10 are good. Even Windows phones are solid device, just need more apps.

kraenk123672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

You and castillo should really meet up and have a beer some day..maybe you'll get married and have children.

slate913672d ago

Or maybe they will form a great friendship because neither of them are brand-bashing douchebags.

kraenk123672d ago

@slate91

Can't tell if serious..

gangsta_red3672d ago

I would take Slate's comment more seriously than yours.

kraenk123671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

@gangsta thats just because you fall into the exact same category.

They are great products, but in a story driven game, do you want them shown to you in such a glaringly obvious way to make it known that you are basically being marketed to? What purpose did they actually serve to the story that required such focus?

I don't mind product placement, or even advertising, but when I purchase a product, I don't like advertising shoved in my face like that. I'll watch TV or YouTube ads because they're free, but product placement is just forced into stories and too often it just breaks the immersion.

I can appreciate it in places where it fits. Things like Big Bang Theory have tons of Xbox, Wii, and Movie product placement, but it works within the confines of the story, and they use it quite well without making it so glaringly obvious....except when they're shown using the controllers where it looks like the actors have never once touched a controller in their life.

Trekster_Gamer3672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

What are whiny b**** article list! Is the journalist 3rd graders?

I'm 4 hours in and it's not like I'm inundated with Microsoft advertisements it's an awesome looking game with an incredible story of course they're not going to feature iPads!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio15d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing15d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit15d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing15d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
