This gen is only starting to show the power these weak consoles have,ratchet and uc4 look incredible.Gears 4 when released,the campaign im sure it too will look amazing.People act like they can't wait 2 more years.We haven't even got a gta6 this gen .WHy is everyone in a hurry all of a sudden? I seem to remember everyone saying 30fps is good enough,60 doesn't make a difference(motion sickness,human eye can't see above 30,only good for some games,30 is more cinematic, you all know who you are whoever said this nonsense) now all of a sudden so many people are willing to but NEW hardware 3 years in.

Actually it shows issues from last gen. Namely that it was started too early with little consideration about what would make it sustainable from day-one to its last. Yes, unexpected circumstances still would have come up, but the point is that it could be said that some companies went into the gen knowing that there would be issues, directly caused them, only to lie not just to the public but themselves that they either didn't exist or could be easily fixed. And that kind of mentality persisted into this gen where we are two years in and went backwards in many regards.

Now those mistakes have to be compensated for, paid, and people are complaining about it when they very likely contributed to it. Wanting things while disregarding consequence.

I do not like the option because it could lead to some having an edge over others. For example take an FPS game that runs at 30fps on current hardware (e.g. Destiny), and if Bungie decides to hot patch it to run 60fps on the new PS4 Neo then those running it on the new machine would clearly have an advantage in competitive play. it wouldn't be the "same" game competitively imo.

The problem was it started when AMD APUs didn't have very good performance. The APUs were underpowered from the very start.

This will divide the community where one has a inferior product that was replaced after few years. So does that mean PS4 neo users will make fun of PS4 old users saying "hah console cant even run 1080p 60fps properly!"

The glaring problems with this article:

Consoles were not ever trying to compete with PCs. Put out a top of the line console and there is a top of the line PC that still out does it. Gamers say these systems are underpowered. Compared to what other consoles would be my question to them. These ARE the most powerful consoles on the market right now.

1080p/60fps is attainable right now on consoles. It just depends on the type of graphics you're expecting from games. Which comes down to developer vision. Some visions are more than what's possible resulting in lower frame rates. It's not the consoles fault. And if the developer doesn't optimize and take their time, it's still not the fault of the console. I could come up with a vision of a game that would make any top of the line PC chug and not handle it. But it's still not the fault of that PC.

It also shows the glaring problem with some gamers who aren't really gamers. They're graphics whores. When you're chasing that instead of good gameplay, you are a graphics whore. Counting pixels and worrying about resolution. I've never seen this level of dissatisfaction from the current level of graphics from gamers. But I play 8bit,16bit,32bit,etc for games all the time. So maybe I'm immune to this hunger and need for extra pixels.I like graphics. But it's not the first thing I think about.

If a developer makes a 1080p/30fps "Neo" game, are gamers going to have a hissy fit because the developer "chose"_to make their game their way. Not yours. If you need 1080p/60fps for every game, then get out there and start making them. Or you can do this:

***Demand developers finish, test and optimize their games before you get it instead of chasing for more power to fix the problem.

***Demand that journalists tell you you truth about games before release or boycott their sites. How hard is that to do? I've boycotted EA for over 10 years. Hasn't hurt my fun in gaming in the slightest. But I'm guessing we all don't have will power to vote with our wallets. Which would be a pity.

It's an interesting time in console gaming. I think part of the issue we are seeing is one of misconception about how long these console cycles should last. Yes in years past we had longer duration between cycles but technology cycles are making much faster leaps these days compared to 10, 20 and 30 years back. To have expectations that our hardware configurations should stay static for 6+ years as it did in previous generations is pretty ridiculous. We live in a day and age where having hardware on the compute side that is 4+ yrs old typically means you are working off of pretty much outdated tech. I welcome console cycles that are shorter. I would be fine with anywhere from 4-5 yrs. The key to this is the tool sets created for the consoles have to be easy and straight forward. No more of this notion of 1-2 yrs to really understand the hardware to get games looking good on it. These machines need to be dev friendly out of the gate if they are going to have shorter cycles.

I have no idea why this has become such a big deal. My conclusion its either internet trolls trying to stir up controversy were there is none or just some jealous poor people.

They act like we don't get new PCs, PC parts, TVs, tablets, and Phones every year. Why aren't these a big deal???? The same things people are saying about the PS4K are also what people were saying years ago when Apple started releasing a new iPhone every year. GET OVER IT, THIS IS HOW TECH GADGETS ARE!

The only people who have a legit argument are the people who just bought a PS4 within the last year. They are the only ones who should be complaining. Sony should offer those people an optional trade-in program where they can upgrade to the new one (if they bought their PS4 within the last year) for $100 after turning in their old one.

This is a great summary of what has been going on in the current and previous generation of console. The ease of development at the cost of graphical evolution over the generation is the most glaring part of this generation but I think there's an argument to be had as to whether that's really a 'problem' like the title suggests. I think the average console gamer's main priority for a game system is that it runs all games and without hiccups, and the newest generation of consoles, thanks to the ease of development, has made this target way easier to meet than in previous, more exotic platforms like the PlayStation 3, where half of the ports were delayed or shoddy for the first few years. I think the average gamers want for pretty graphics is secondary to their want for every game to function well. And we are at a point now where our game visuals are so good that the extra optimisations aren't worth sacrificing the performance of a tonne of third party games. PC gamers like me can poke holes at game visuals all day but the average gamer doesn't care about anisotropic filtering or low resolution particle effects, so I say give developers an easier platform to deal with.

Technology is moving fast nowadays. I'm all for them doing a refresh every 3 years. You can sell your old one and pick one up if you want, or not. It literally doesn't matter.

Why the whining? you are happy with your PS4 - great, game on, all the games released for PS4K will be playable on your old PS4, just in lower res (on the same resolution as if it were no PS4K in existence). IF that bothers you, sell your PS4 for 200-250USD, add another 150 USD and grab the PS4K.

You spend each year 600USD on a frickin smartphone, why not spend 150 USD every 3-4 years on a console upgrade?

Worst case scenario you bought a ps4 right before you find out this is happening and you cant afford to get the new one which you would of waited for and been able to get. In this case you have bad luck and I can see how that would suck. That being said if your solution is I would rather the company not make a better one so every has to be at my level to, you are a selfish entitled person. If sony decides not to release the console because of peoples complaints you will be at exactly the same spot you are now and would be with a new, you just robbed other people of a better experience. congrats.

Is a rumor nothing more nothing less. If it becomes true, then consoles are pretty much done. Who is going to want to spend $300-$400 every two to three years for an upgrade to a console no one that's who.

Here's the thing. The PS4 Neo exists because Sony wants save money on psvr. This goes hand and hand with vr social screen as sony wants others to be able to participate with and/or watch the player that's in vr. This second screen idea came late to the vr party from internal studios such as Japan Studio. The Ps4 in its current state is not powerful enough to handle the hmd and tv at the same time. So Sony decided to add a processing unit with every vr hmd to provide to power needed for social screen. Soon after they realized they could cut manufacturing costs by adding the needed power for social screen to the ps4 itself. Thus the ps4 neo is created with the added bonus of extra power for non vr games. The last piece of the puzzle is the psvr hmd without the processing unit at a lower cost than 399. You'll see. ;)

Personally I don't really care anymore. I bought the PS4 for exclusives. All that VR stuff (if I wanted it in the first place even) and third party games, I have my Gaming PC for that. I guess that makes me a PC fanboy, right?

I have to agree that PS4 is fine the way it is. Devs should be encouraged to optimize and get the most of the hardware they are given for the length of the generation be it 5 years or whatever it may be. 40 millions PS4 owners outh there love the PS4 the way it is and seeing games like Uncharted 4 and R&C in motion are more than enough to keep most of us happy. I think Sony should focus more on just delivering more first party games and if PSVR is that important to them then find ways to make it work really well with the current PS4. Many people will not want to just blindly fork over another $400 to $500 for a new PS4 and then the PSVR on top of that. I realize Sony is doing great and the PS4 has really helped them in terms of turning things around financially with the amazing success it has had. There are alot of people on here who will go out and buy whatever Sony makes and just be happy to support them no matter what and then there are others who are more objective and actually want a good reason for shelling out MORE hard earned money for something that may not benefit them as much as a company would like you to believe. To each their own. I am happy with my PS4 just the way it is and I am really curious if and when Sony finally comes out and says something concrete about all of this 'Neo' talk just what it will be.

Where is the developer's incentive to make the game run nice on the older console? They'll just be like "Play it on the PS4K if you want a stable frame rate" instead of squeezing all the juice out of the original PS4.

According to the Manager at my local GS it is real and it will work just like a phone company where you can trade in your old PS4 for credit towards it.Take that as you will.

Not since the ps2 Era. The problem this gen is console gamers started caring about 1080p 60 which in the past was something pc gamers worried about. So they are releasing a product for everyone complaining and to now get 800 for system from some people this generation. This has moved me back to primary pc because I would rather spend the money there and buy nintendo as my console.

It's sad how everyone buys $800 dollar phones every year spending $80 a month on outrageously overpriced phone plans but when it comes to consoles people bitch if a revision comes out. It's been 3 years since the PS4 and Xbone came out, and it's time for a revision. It's very easy to put upgraded hardware onto these consoles since it's x86 architecture and why shouldn't they? It's not like it hasn't happen before, Sony did it with the PSP by upgrading the RAM from 32 MB to 64 MB.

I might be OK with this if they offer some kind of generous "trade-up" program since my ps4 sounds like a jet taking off most of the time. (And yes, it is in an open air environment) ;)

with all honesty, technology is evolving faster than we could ever predict add to that the law of diminished returns, u need need loads more power to make a difference than before, with these two factors combined, the idea of a console that last 6 or 7 years is ludicrous

The problem is using cheap, underpowered APU units from AMD. Quit screwing around, contract nvidia to make a beast, charge $600 or $700, and let everyone enjoy 4K video streaming, every game at 1080p and 60fps with zero compromises.

Now that Sony has there drone army firmly in its grasps it's time to milk there fan base to make up for there failed laptop, tv, and cellphone division LET THE MILKING BEGAN!!!!!!

I actually have a piece lined up that takes a different position, which is that Sony's supposed new console isn't worth crying over at this point of time, at least until we know more details, but I'm not purposefully in opposition to my co-writer, who actually wrote an excellent piece supporting his point of view, and if you actually read the article, it's not just one big rant about the PS4 Neo or PS4K or whatever you wish to call it, but actually addresses an underlying issue that may be pushing console manufacturers to make this decision. I don't think my piece is in direct opposition to his, but is more narrow in scope while his is more big picture.

Nothing is going to change,those that do not upgrade their PS4's will still be able to play the same games as those that do the upgrade. The upgrade is just for those that have 4k capability and I think the PSVR will benefit from the upgrade as well.
I highly doubt Sony is going to start making PS4k only games,that would destroy their credibility and consumer trust. We know that and they know that.
Maybe one day in the next few years you might upgrade to 4K and won't you be glad you can upgrade your PS4 to it as well?

The memory offers 24% boost as it clocks faster. Apprently not enough to notice bigger differences.

The GPU has a 14% increase "Compute unit count doubles from 18 to 36, and clock-speed increases from 800MHz to 911MHz"

If they overclock the CPU and GPU on the Playstation 4s now then they will almost be the same.

Wuchang is great. Nine Sols didn’t have a physical copy so I never played it but I’ve heard good things so I will check it out. I stopped playing sports games many years ago when before the card dlc’s or whatever they’re called.
