Dark Souls 3 is great, but I can't love it like Bloodborne, because it's not as cool

"Ask players of From Software's Dark Souls games what the difference between that series and Bloodborne is (other than the obvious setting disparities) and they'd probably sum it up like this: Bloodborne is about offense, Dark Souls is about defense. But after playing Dark Souls 3, I think I've found a more significant difference: Bloodborne is cool."

That's cool, in terms of style though, I think Bloodborne is at the top of From Software's games.

i find BB more fined than DS3 ...DS3 is incredible but has more rough edges in contrast BB is carved perfectly ...(and damn that BB's DLC Old Hunters is an unchallenged masterpiece )

Blastoise3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Finally got my hands on Dark Souls 3 today and it's difficult going back after Bloodborne.

I'm sure in time i'll get into it, it's PVP will likely be better, but right now I'm missing my threaded cane and the scourge of beasts.

Also, the Hunters Dream, the messengers, the doll & weapon transformations. The article is right, Bloodborne is just cool.

Seraphim3557d ago

@ SourSweetCool

That is one nice thing about Souls games. You have the option to choose your class and play style & can alter it through leveling so you're not locked into one specific thing. Although at the same time it was refreshing in Bloodborne being able to just play. I can appreciate both but having options does open things up.

end of the day both are excellent games. Not to knock DS3 but I'm starting to really appreciate what Bloodborne was again. Both, while somewhat similar are vastly different. No one is better than the other though one may be preferable to some. Again, end of day both are unarguably great.

Raoh903557d ago

it's just a matter of opinion. I couldn't stand Bloodborne's colors being so freaking dark at all times. That just looked lazy in comparison to the rich and colorful worlds of Dark Souls 3

StrawberryDiesel4203557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Adding guns, removing shields and speeding up the combat makes Bloodborne so much fun to play. Not to mention the amazing atmosphere, art style, setting, weapons, monsters, boss battles, parry mechanic and dodge mechanic. I can't get enough of seeing blood spray everywhere when I time a parry perfectly. Very satisfying gameplay.

nix3557d ago (Edited 3556d ago )

TL;DR

Souls series feels like an old school game. Bloodborne just made it look cooler - it's still hard. Bloodborne also feels faster. That's what i feel. I think more ppl found it easier to get into Bloodborne than Souls games.

In the end, i started with Demon's Souls so that was like the beginning of this whole Souls and Bloodborne. I'm really proud that i managed to finish it considering it was first in the series and not many took the plunge. The data available was scarce. You practically had to learn and discover things yourself. You never knew what you were going to face around the corner or behind the foggy gate. Oh the memories.

UltraNova3556d ago (Edited 3556d ago )

This is exactly why a Bloodborne Game of the year edition copy is sitting on my shelf unopened for 2 months now. Because I didnt want DS3 to be spoiled in a any way, shape or form. These games are indeed very similar, but very different at their core where it matters. Customization, builds, magic, multiplayer complexity, punishment and generally defense and strategy wins the day in dark souls.

I'm sure From doesn't give a rats ass if we thing Dark Souls is cool, they only set out to make us forget our modern day of playing and make us learn (or remember for those of us who where around during the good old days) how to think and devise a strategy before we make a move, to read and look for the story and live with our choices.

I haven't played BB yet, but I know enough to appreciate their difference, which is that BB is the closest From software can offer modern gamer's to a Dark Souls experience without alienating them, it just happen in typical From Software fashion to create a hell of a good game in the process!

Meh, found BB to be way more fresh than DS3

Vegamyster3557d ago

Fresh? I'm playing through both right now and beat DS 1 & 2, so far the big difference i find in BB vs DS 3 in the faster/scrappier combat but it doesn't have the same overall variety in armor, weapons, weight requirements, items found throughout the world & visual design ect. To me so far, DS3 took what was great from DS1/2/BB and melded it together expertly.

t-hall7853557d ago

To me that's what deters me from playing Dark Souls 3. Bloodborne kept it simple. Grab a sword grab a gun and go.

Salooh3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Again, So far i prefer BB. But that doesn't lower DS3 quality. BB makes me more excited and intense. Also the art really give it a different feeling and unique compared to the other soul games. Even bosses feels different and more creepy...

Aloy-Boyfriend3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

I'm enjoying the depth of DS3 more, but that's about it.

I think BB exceeds it on every department. The Gothic world in BB feels more alive than this medieval setting on DS3.

Also so far DS3 has been a breeze compared to previous games. It could be that I'm already a vet, but bosses in BB just feel harder.

Also I don't like how close bonfires are from each other. They feel like checkpoints

wsoutlaw873556d ago

The bosses in both games seem way to easy. In bloodborne, after father g, most bosses were extremely simple and similar. Ds3 used a lot of bosses where once you figured out the technique to beating a boss it was very easy. I beat like the first 5 bosses in ds with out dieing and it just felt wrong.

Timesplitter143557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

I think DS3 has the best gameplay of any From Software game so far.

The only problem it has is that just like DS2, its bosses don't really feel special or important (unlike the bosses of DeS, DS1 and Bloodborne). It had nothing that compared to the coolness of Maiden Astraea, the Old Monk, Ludwig, Cleric Beast, Vicar Amelia, Gwyn, Artorias, Crossbreed Priscilla, The Four Kings, Geat Wolf Sif, Gravelord Nito, and so on...

It also didn't have amazing NPC quests like Solaire's or Siegmeyer's. I'm under the impression that NPC quests in Dark Souls are unknown to most people because they are almost impossible to pull off without reading a wiki. But they are so worth it:
https://www.youtube.com/wat...
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

But overall it's an amazing game

wsoutlaw873556d ago

Im not sure what you mean about npc quests. There are npc questlines in ds3 just like the other ds games.

Lightning Mr Bubbles3557d ago

I love comparing them. I found bloodborne a bit more disturbing and darker, just the setting and atmosphere is a bit more unsettling to me for some reason. But Dark Souls 3 is no slouch either, and I would give the edge in gameplay to Dark Souls, deeper combat style, more customization and armor, more weapons, and bigger levels to explore. I like them both about the same.

Mikefizzled3557d ago

In terms of style. Metal Wolf Chaos is FromSoftware's masterpiece.

hulk_bash19873557d ago

I love Bloodbornes more fast paced action but DS3 is still an amazing game. From Software is still in top form. Can't wait to see what they have in store next.

Lord_Sloth3557d ago

I have to agree. Bloodborne was great, but I don't care for the high aggression it used for it's combat. I much prefer the Souls games.

ShadowKnight3557d ago

I like bloodborne more and the Gothic setting.

Sly-Lupin3556d ago

I think ultimately I like Dark Souls 3 better more, but there are so many things Bloodborne did better. Most especially combat--I really don't understand why DS3 doesn't have Bloodborne's regain system. God forbid Miyazaki give gamers two different ways to play.

wsoutlaw873556d ago

The rally system made combat in bb silly. Just stand in front of an enemy smacking them and win.

Sly-Lupin3555d ago

That's not even remotely true. The regain meter started decreasing immediate, and I don't think any enemies (except maybe the very first ones?) could by combo-locked.

What it did was allow you to be more daring with combat. Instead of constantly hiding behind a shield and moving cautiously like in Dark Souls. It would be really nice if we had either option, but oh well, it turns out that aside from two or three areas, most of DS3 is easy enough you can play super recklessly without worry.

And I guess estus recovery does function kind of like regain.

Majister-Ludi3556d ago

I agree, ds3 is the best of the five souls games. Visually very impressive with the best bosses.

Pongwater3556d ago

I love all the Souls games I've played, but Bloodborne is tops for me. The tweaks to the gameplay made it feel fresh after playing Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1 . The story, visuals, and overall atmosphere best showed the HP Lovecraft influence that's in all the Souls games. DS3 is great but feels like a step back in several ways. The boss battles in particular felt very typical and were relatively easy in comparison to the other games, though the bosses themselves looked cool as always. Still, as far as I'm concerned it's like discussing the order of your top 5 games of all time.

wsoutlaw873556d ago

Dark souls is definitely better imo. The pvp and covenants make it much better. Im not going to talk about which is cooler because im not 12 and don't see much difference. The setting and gameplay was awesome in bloodborne but the ds3 worlds and combat have a little more depth. I know there are a lot of people who only played bloodborne because its ps exclusive and are biased towards that too though. The variety in ds really puts it over the top for me. The combat suits the game better too.

Femto3556d ago

I'm playing through Bloodborne for the first time now, and it's my first time playing a FROM game. It is simply a fantastic game, the DLC is great too, extremely difficult though. Is Dark Souls 3 very similar to Bloodborne, should I pick it up?

Overload3557d ago

It's very similar, just more dark high fantasy style.

Salooh3557d ago

Must have if you loved BB. However expect some changes..

BlackTar1873557d ago

well for one shields are big in DS and non existent(Spoiler there is a shield in BB) in BB.

Both great games.I prefer DS do to style and fantasy but BB is also great basically every game is great in this style even the watered down version DS2

Imalwaysright3557d ago

You should pick up every Souls game.

esmittystud1013557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Basically in Bloodborne you dodge/perry everything and use its regain system to gain health back. In Dark Souls you use your shield/dodge/perry, no regain system unless you use a certain weapons or items that may let you. Bloodborne has a decent amount of items/weapons but Dark Souls has so many more. I haven't even played DSII or DSIII yet. DS has so many more npcs as well.

They are both great games and I can't wait to dig into DSII and DSIII. I didn't want to miss anything in DS III story wise or just little things that only guys that played all the games would know or notice. I'm only 70 hours into DS as well and I just got to Sen's Fortress. Probably when I finish, my favorite game of all time.

Maybe PS4.5 will have Backwards Capability so I can play Demon Souls. A remaster of Demon Souls would be great. I'd rather have that than it be B.C.

hulk_bash19873557d ago

It's not as fast paced as BB but its just as rewarding. You can t go wrong with any Souls games really. I started playing with Demons Souls and I've been holed ever since.

Sly-Lupin3556d ago

In broad strokes, Dark Souls is slower with more methodical combat (you have to be much more careful). It's also bigger in terms of... everything. More items, more NPCs, more quests, more bosses, more areas, more secrets. Should you pick of Dark Souls 3? Absolutely. And Dark Souls 1 as well. Of the Souls game, it's the true classic (minus the absurdly vehement opinion of pvp fetishists).

Majister-Ludi3556d ago

They are all the same game more or less just with different coats of paint and bb is a little faster.

I consider bloodborne a masterpiece but I don't consider DS3 a masterpiece. Maybe it's because I loved the lore more in bloodborne. The world is fantastic too. The enemy designs.

Could be because I liked the horror/dark atmosphere of it. The gameplay was fun to play too which I can say to DS3 too but I like the faster gameplay. :)

Tsunade3557d ago

So far I liked the lore of Bloodborne more than Dark Souls. It was very interesting and everywhere there was a little piece of the puzzle.

Cueil3557d ago

not enough loot in BB... also combat isn't as fun for me... just my personal preference

DragonDDark3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Bloodborne had less weapons which made it harder for me to choose the weapon to use Unlike Dark souls games that had tons of useless weapons. And after the DLC, it became harder but few weapons were removed from my choices after that.
I like the armour customisation in DS3 more though.

metalgod883557d ago

Don't forget, the lore from the Souls series is spread throughout 4 different games. Bloodborne is kind of its own little awesome world.

DragonDDark3557d ago

The 2nd one is irrelevant to me. It barely got any coverage in DS3. It's like it was a filler with some few plot points for the dark souls series. The lore was a mess too. Bad translations. Etc. Etc.

metalgod883556d ago

DragonDDark, I can agree with that. Now that I really think about it, Dark Souls 2 was also in its own little world, but not as awesome.

Movefasta19933557d ago

They are both great jesus people always trying to put one fromsoft game over another.Everything is a competition now.

PeaSFor3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

1-Demon's Souls
2-BloodBorne
3-Dark Souls3
4-Dark Souls
5-Dark Souls 2

Free_Fro3557d ago

I would agree with that order.. although some might place Dark souls 3 above all..

BlackTar1873557d ago

i go
1. Demon
2 Dark 1
3. BB
4. DS3

5.DS2

They are different. I like Bloodborne more because I don't have to care about equipment weight, not able to wear some armor and because of the Gothic atmosphere but I still like like Dark Souls 3 a lot and I am having a very good time with it.

nitus103557d ago

I have not played DS3 yet since I restart Bloodborne because I did not like my current build and some choices I made so I am going to take some time to finish before I get DS3.

Personally I am keeping well away from any walk through unless I am really stuck and that only happened once (definite face-palm when I found out). For me reading a walk through or watching a how-to spoils the fun of the game. Nothing like walking into an area for those "Oh S**t!" moments which can really get the blood pumping, not to mention when you finally beat a boss without relying on a how-to.

Sony Remade Demon’s Souls, So Why Won’t It Touch Bloodborne?

The Outerhaven writes: Bloodborne is still one of PlayStation’s most beloved exclusives, but it remains trapped on PS4. Meanwhile Demon’s Souls got a full PS5 remake. But why?

theouterhaven.net
thorstein15h ago

Demon's Souls was a PS3 game.

Bloodborne is PS4 and can be played on a PS5.

There's no need for a remaster.

Relientk7712h ago

I completely agree with you on this. If you want remasters or remakes give us games from the PS1 or PS2 era like Legend of Dragoon.

Eonjay6h ago

I would say thats a personal oponion trying to be passed off as a law. Truth is thre are many people who would love a remaster.upgrade so they can play Bloodborne at 60 FPS. People would literally love that.

shadowhaxor9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I mentioned that in my article, did you read it? I literally pointed out this is exactly why the game is still doing well, and why Sony has zero reason to remake/remaster it.

And there are plenty of PS4 to PS5 remaster/remakes, to counterpoint that.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
GTA V Expanded & Enhanced
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
Control: Ultimate Edition
Death Stranding Director’s Cut
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection
The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Eonjay6h ago

Either because they technically can't because From Soft wont allow them too, or because From Soft is sorking on the sequal, remaster themselves. Therre is a third option of course and that would be that they are working on it

MinnesotaFatts4h ago

Some part of me wonders if there's some sort of corporate war going on at Sony.

Daver7h ago

I want a new one not a remaster

victorMaje6h ago

TLoU got the remaster & then the remake treatment.
Where is the next bloodborne, or remaster, or remake?

Goodguy015h ago

What it needs is a ps5+pc release. The game absolutely needs a 4k60 update. Lots of money sony is sleeping on while the souls genre is still hot.

MinnesotaFatts4h ago

Tell me you don't know what a remaster is without telling me.

Bloodborne is infamously capped at 30fps on either system--a bizarre design choice given that speed and reaction time is central to the gameplay systems. This capped performance was never patched out officially, unless you jailbreak and mod your console. A remaster for modern hardware, not the infamously finicky PS4 devkits, would be a great way to both hyper-optimize the game *and* drive sales for the PS5, which still doesn't have a system seller title.

RaiderNation9h ago

There might be some licensing red tape they cant get around?

shadowhaxor9h ago

That'd be interesting, but Sony owns the IP 100%. So, I can't see how that is part of the issue, if there is even one.

RaiderNation5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Maybe Sony isnt interested in doing it without the assistance of Miyazaki and he's not interested? (Just spit-balling).

MinnesotaFatts4h ago

That's the issue according to FROMSOFT. They'd *love* to do a remaster, but Sony won't even return their calls.

Inverno9h ago

Because they're saving that for the PS6 to lure in all the suckers that will think they're making a sequel, but the whole gen will pass by and From won't ever touch it because Song doesn't care for either Demon or Blood outside of remakes.

Furesis6h ago

Because they made them do something else, then they canceled it and who knows what they are doing these days. They dont understand what they have and honestly i dont think they know what they are doing either.

How bout forget remade and start making new game pls?

And PC gamers wallets always lose :) Gotta upgrade that graphics card constantly because you want to experience all those hyper realistic graphics with solid frame rate LMAO!🤣

Gridknac49d ago

LOL, you upgrade your console every 5-7 yrs. When you do get that shiny new console it has 3yr old pc tech in it. Not to mention 1/2 of your purchased games may or may not work and oftem show very little improvement. If you were to get this type of a remaster from sony, it would cost you another $70. PC can run pretty much any game ever made and will give you the option to remaster it as little or as much as you like for FREE. PC sets the bar and your console attempts the bar 3yrs later.

DustMan49d ago

LOL. I updated my 1080ti to a 3080 for $300 in a part swap. that was in late 2020. I'm still crushing games at higher frame rates lol. Bought the PC in late 2017 with an i7-8700 cpu. Still. Going. Strong. Maybe upgrade next year or around the decade mark.

In the meantime I'll play every game imaginable via emulation, and new releases as they come.

The only reason Sony won't budge with this is that they probably want it to be more than remaster which is how ShadPS4 is doing to Bloodborne right now provided that you have strong enough hardware.

andy8549d ago

I really dont know why theyre holding on to this so much when its been asked for so much. Unless there'd a plan of a demons souls style remake

Miraak82 49d ago

Probably because their expectations of how much a game should sell is too high now a days, it only hit above 9 mil in sales in the coarse of 10 years. When they have franchises that sell x2 or x3 that number in half the time it's probably hard for them to justify the cost since they've gone the coarse of appealing to the widest audiences ... and Bloodborne isn't exactly that type of game . Even looking at trophies only a small percentage beat it let alone got half way through it sadly .

andy8549d ago

That's because of difficulty and not really much cost in remastering games. Look at what the PC community do for free. Its guaranteed profit for Sony.

Miraak82 49d ago

It's also a Fromsoft game and uses it's own propriety engine so unless they go to FS themselves or remake it like Demons Souls remake it's probably not worth the hassle from them .
