Reflections on DOOM - Old and New

HPP:
I’ve always been attached to gaming. My earliest memories were playing my cousins’ NES on holidays and getting a Super Nintendo for Christmas when I was in kindergarten. Just before the boom of home PCs, my parents purchased us a family computer. My guess is it was for the purpose of adult things like balancing their checkbooks and word processing? Who knows. The point is if it had a video screen I was going to find a way to play a game on it. I played anything available to me. The first few PC games I remember playing were Lemmings and SkiFree. Scroll forward a few years to ’96 or ’97.

Unfortunately, my first experience with Doom was the dreaded 32X version. Still got me hooked though.

You know, I actually really enjoyed the 32X port. It beat the SNES version in terms of performance, and the Jaguar port that lacked any music.

I remember getting the 32X with DOOM for Christmas in '94 and playing it for the better part of the year. Good times!

I've been in the market for a 32x and have always been curious about the port, actually.

I got a 32X soon after it came out.. I'd say out of classic consoles, the Jaguar and PS1 versions are the best ports. 3DO, Saturn and 32X were pretty subpar. The 32X version isn't even the full game, the 3DO had a very bad frame rate and Saturn version was ugly as hell.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

After watching Scavengers Reign? The answer is unequivocally yes. I really want something out of left field but I think people are too afraid to shake things up.

It's what I love about Shadowrun and Black Mirror. Love, Death, and Robots proved that there's an audience for stuff that doesn't fit the mold.

Weird games in general we don't get enough of, we need more games like Katamari and Mr domino, things like that
