With the DOOM beta having just been made playable to the public, I weigh in on the reasons why it seems to be having a tough time with fans of the famous series.
Evercade has teased a new DOOM release for their platform.
I hope they make a Doom themed VS unit with red lighting. it will be like the Duke 3d one they did a couple years ago.

Discover 10 timeless video games from the past that remain absolutely playable today. From Chrono Trigger to DOOM, these classics have aged like fine wine!
Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.
Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.
The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

The video game industry is already so creative, but one thing that can be improved is its handling of space.
After watching Scavengers Reign? The answer is unequivocally yes. I really want something out of left field but I think people are too afraid to shake things up.
It's what I love about Shadowrun and Black Mirror. Love, Death, and Robots proved that there's an audience for stuff that doesn't fit the mold.
I wonder if the hate stems from people expecting a little more than what we have been given. Perhaps the full game will get a better reception.
The Open Beta was good, great fun even, and the customisation is addictive and surprisingly deep, but I can understand the angst against it, it just didn't 'feel' like an arena shooter, which it was labelled as being. However, that's because I've had experience with the likes of Quake, Unreal Tournament, and the older DOOM titles, so I have a strong mind as to what an 'Arena Shooter' should be in my eyes, I bet most people who haven't experienced said titles would have seen the modern DOOM as very much an arena shooter, because although it doesn't play like older arena shooters, it definitely plays much differently to modern FPS titles.
I personally liked the Beta, it had a nice feel to the old games. It is a beta so I guess we have to give it a chance.
Open beta was mental! I couldn't get my mates into it though. They get upset and angry when they die then complain its the stupid game.
True competitive multiplayer may be dying in my opinion sadly. Just take halo 5 for example, so much hype on bringing it back to its roots with arena 4 v 4. But a lot less people play arena than warzone. Some people want the instant gratification and don't want to work hard to be better than others. Everyone wins no one is punished.
I don't think the arena shooter market is as big as they claim it is currently. Doom could have evolved into a modern day FPS and still maintained it's status just fine. We haven't seen an Unreal game in years, nor Quake and the last iteration for both of those games wasn't exactly the highlight of any particular series.
And personally, not having ADS in a shooter now kind of feels like a step-backwards. Roots or not.
