Remedy Explains Why They Develop Exclusive Titles For Microsoft's Platforms

Remedy Entertainment's Quantum Break released earlier this month for Xbox One and Windows 10, and despite some technical issues, it became Microsoft's biggest new IP launch for its console.

Stop giving interviews and get to work on the next Alan Wake and your next masterpiece. Throw in something about Quantum being a story written by Alan with a crossover nightmare level...where Alan ends up in the QB universe (maybe even with QB powers).

gameseveryday3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

I really don't know why Alan Wake 2 is not happening. May be they don't want take the risk with the IP but really it was one of the best games on the Xbox 360. Shame that Remedy does not trust the IP.

lelo2play3684d ago

Since it was Microsoft that produced the game, it's Microsoft that doesn't trust the IP. Unfortunately for Remedy, Alan Wake wasn't a big hit on the X360, in spite of being a great game.

If it was for Remedy, they would have already made Alan Wake 2.

blakstarz3684d ago

Well they never said that they wouldn't. Someone raised that question to them before and it was something along the lines that they would love too, but QB is was their main focus, plus Alan Wake sighting are sprinkled through QB, so who know...maybe they are and just keep things under wraps.

Miss_Weeboo3684d ago

I think, maybe because the game didn't sold SUPER well (sales were ok, but not what they were expecting). So they tried with this new franchise instead

glassgannon9093684d ago

remedy loves the ip. im pretty sure ms dissuaded them from making aw2 in order to make something with more explosions.
its in one of the interviews that sam lake mentioned during qb's reveal.'wider public appeal' i believe, was the exact word.

Kleptic3684d ago

yeah, AW wasn't exactly an efficient use of resources...like 5 years in development and got completely re-tooled about half way through...

I don't think it so much that MS or Remedy 'doesn't trust the IP'...its that the vision behind it was kind of all over the place through the first stages of development, and then it failed to make a significant dent when it finally landed...

I love(d) Remedy...Max Payne 1 and 2 were unbelievable at the time...but I don't think they're really going to be getting peoples' attention until they step away from any kind of bullet time-like mechanic...that stuff was nailed down in 2003...AW spun it around enough to be different...but QB is 100% just a game built solely around what max payne 2 did perfectly almost a decade and a half ago...they need something equally innovative, but completely different, especially if they're still going to push for one console (even with MS's win 10 PC thing, but people hate that compared to steam so its not enough)

FPS_D3TH3684d ago

Don't think it's about trust, but rather how are we going to make this feel "new" or "fresh".

jb2273684d ago

Most likely because Spencer is on record saying that he wants to further Microsoft IP over working & funneling funds into other people's IPs. Remedy holds the license to Alan Wake so unless QB sells gangbusters and gives Remedy some footing to demand their next MS game be a sequel to AW, chances are high that MS wouldn't foot the bill for it. If it does happen, it may go multiplat, if they stick w/ MS I'd say it'll either be a QB sequel or another new IP.

donthate3684d ago

Nobody is saying Alan Wake 2 isn't happening though. Besides, by now Remedy is working on something wether it is Alan Wake 2, next Quantum Break or something completely new, they are working on something.

Glad to see MS keeping the relationship strong with Remedy. Looking forward to the next game whatever that is.

cyberwaffles3684d ago

Because Alan Wake wasn't special. Do you remember the gimmick for that game? It tried to emphasize "lighting mechanics" which failed in my opinion.

Pointing a flashlight at someone before killing them isn't groundbreaking, I do that all the time in BF4.

Alan Wake felt like a chore.

bouzebbal3684d ago

Keep doing games for MS.

Well, I thought it was amazing. Got a little repetitive, but it kept me hooked. Story was brilliant, especially if you explored. Visuals were fantastic, and gameplay was often thrilling.

DivoJones3684d ago

Yes, it must be the PR department holding up development on Alan Wake 2.

CoDsuperstar3684d ago

I want a Max Payne reboot. go back to the original new york detective noir and change the story up a bit.

You are kinding right?
So MS are broke, because they canceled Fable Legends.
And Sony bought the studio.
Money is what matter to all the companies.
The end.

ScorpiusX3684d ago

Think it's more than money , cause last i checked Nintendo or Sony are not broke . i Could be wrong .

Davi1233684d ago

*WTH! My old comment desapear...*

ScorpiusX3684d ago

Sony bought nothing , it held a job fair ,
MS still owns everything studio related from IP to names .

WiseCrack103684d ago

MS is broke...yes broke even they consistently make a net income of 20 billion per financial year...where as Sony generally loses money...

Sony didn't buy Lionhead, they held a job fair and invited Lionhead employees, for all we know they didn't hire a single one of them

Seriously...do you think before posting or just type whatever random nonsense comes to mind?

Godmars2903684d ago

Money as it translates to popularity. General popularity rather than harden fans. And for the money, and effort, invested into making Alan Wake, MS saw poor returns in terms of popularity and the general acceptance of the Xbox brand. So no Alan Wake 2 anytime soon.

Davi1233684d ago

@castillo
@WiseCrack10

Yeah... Off course.
MS have planned close the studio.
So if didn't bought them, that means Sony will make exclusives to Xbox One....
lol

Knushwood Butt3684d ago

QB must have cost a fortune to make.

I doubt anyone else wanted to blow that kind of cash.

MS must be hoping the game has legs.

UltraNova3684d ago

I'd say and, I'm speculating here, the live action part must have cost somewhere in the 3-5 million range(it was pretty low end TV stuff even with Littlefinger in it) and the game's development around 50-60 million.

They probably made that amount in 3 days and will easily double it by the months end.

MilkMan3684d ago

Stop wasting time with MS, they dont know what to do with your talents.
Get multiplat and start earning some dough.
MS will eventually dismantle you for no apparent reason. Save yourself the headache.

DragonDDark3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

MS has done it to few studios...
Good thing they're not owned by MS

candystop3684d ago

They've all done it but i would rather see them stay with MS to help grow there single player image.

ScorpiusX3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

So have the other guys and i bet both sides didn't like doing it , but its part of the industry .

ScorpiusX3684d ago

Why does Remedy keep developing exclusives for Microsoft? CG Mag Online spoke to Thomas Puha, head of Media and Partners at Remedy Entertainment, to find out.

“We have a long relationship with Microsoft. Remedy is an independent company – we’re not owned by Microsoft – but we’ve been working with Microsoft for ten years. Like every relationship you have your ups and downs. But we know each other. Microsoft wants a Remedy game. They want story driven games that we do well. They like to focus on the story, and that’s great.

Don't think the point can be made anymore clear than that. Great relationship

Wallstreet373684d ago

Its all about money, like do you guys really need an article to explain to you or feed you pr bs? I swear some of you fanboys are really special lol smh

lelo2play3684d ago

Stop being a fanboy.

EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Rockstar, Sony, Nintendo, etc... have dismantled studios.

MilkMan3684d ago

Yeah but no one does it with such pizzazz.
Excluding EA, they are just monsters.

_-EDMIX-_3684d ago

Lol agreed. Microsoft doesn't own Remedy to actually dismantle them..

They do have a colorful history with teams either leaving them or getting closed down but the same can be said for Lots of publishers.

WiseCrack103684d ago

How is MS going to dismantle them when they don't even own Remedy?

ElementX3684d ago

I remember in previous articles fanboys would say that Sony lets developers take risks and they are a great company because of it. MS wanted a game and let Remedy take some risks and now people are saying they don't know what to do with the talent? Sure Quantum Break wasn't all it was hyped to be but taking risks doesn't always pay off.

OoglyBoogly3684d ago

No. Developers have said that Sony let's them take chances. Not "fanboys".

Yours sounds like a fanboy comment.

Single A games and live service games. Those make sense

S2Killinit795d ago

None of it makes sense. But its happening.

Ps5conehead795d ago

That’s up to Microsoft they want return on there investment. From buying up those publishers. That’s what there in business for. And they made a mistake putting day one exclusive on game pass. So now Microsoft wants to profit any way they can.its called buisness . Just like Sony putting games on pc a year are two after ps5 launch.
So if they can make money off PlayStation and Nintendo. They will do that. And I bet soon real soon they will release some aaa exclusives .and I bet one day it will be same day release

TheEroica795d ago

Sony gamers begging for Xbox games.... Who would've thunk it?

BISHOP-BRASIL795d ago

Yeah, because random site off the internet represents all Sony gamers, they have the letter of attorney and all...

S2Killinit795d ago

Lol what a spin. You dizzy?

AsunaYuukiTheFlash795d ago (Edited 795d ago )

We don’t care about shovelwares. Get that junk out of PS5

Friendlygamer795d ago

Some of these seem to be exclusive for lack of enthusiasm of the publisher rather than because of deals. A lot of cool indies skip ps for some reason like katana zero, el paso, elsewhere and gunbrela

S2Killinit795d ago

Even more indies skip xbox. We know that right?

Friendlygamer795d ago

Quality over quantity, Microsoft got some really interesting and curated niche games on their machines, maybe in part because of gamepass

S2Killinit795d ago

Quality and MS are not things you bring up in same sentence.

shinoff2183795d ago (Edited 795d ago )

Alot of indies skip xbox to. It goes round and round. Personally I think your off base on that but no need to have the argument.

Friendlygamer795d ago

Between katana zero, valheim, Battletech, el passo... I don't feel off base. maybe ps got a million of light novel games that will never release on Xbox but like I've said, I'm talking about niche games highlights, the 10%.

Heck, it's probably thanks to Microsoft that the s.t.a.l.k.e.r games came to console ps included, meanwhile Sony backwards compatibility continues to be extremely anemic.

And I'm sure most ps5 users are happy to ignore these games and just play wathever new 3rd person action game is trending but it's cool that Microsoft gives some love to smaller audiences and software preservation

shinoff2183795d ago

Again your off base just to be snide. All it's showing though is your ignorance.

One light novels wtf is that even. Ps has plenty of pretty damn good indies.

Speaking of indies and ms being responsible. You know F.I.S.T. of course you do alot of you guys just support gamepass. Well here's a history of Sony being responsible for helping indies. Look up the China project from Sony.

Lastly lol your ignorance showing again. Sony has plenty of games. Personally third person is better then first anyway but that's besides the point. Sony gets so many games that xbox doesn't get because yall don't support the games. Jrpgs being a great example. I personally am not into every Sony first party game. Alot of us aren't. On the other side you don't get to eat often so you gobble up everything. Me personally God of War not my cup, etc. For me I'm into jrpgs and ms just can't touch Sony on those. Again because the Xbox base doesn't support it. Devs dont wanna waste their time or money. Hit me up when falcom develops a game over there.

Speaking of third person narrative games. Aren't yall drooling over hellblade 2. The first one was Sony exclusive at one point. Another not my cup game. Showing we don't have to fall in line and agree we love everything Sony puts out. The facts are they sell though unlike elsewhere(not nintendo)

StormSnooper794d ago

You are same person as GamerRN, yes?

Abnor_Mal795d ago

They really think PlayStation fans would want to play Redfall? Pfft.

Personally nothing on that list would be any game I’d want to play.

TwoPicklesGood795d ago

I’d absolutely love Hellblade 2, Palworld, and Quantum Break on ps5 as I’m sure tons of others would too. There’s nothing wrong with wanting games from another console and its sad that people try to act like they aren’t interested in them.

shinoff2183795d ago

While indont agree with the games. I agree with the point. Your not wrong.

DarXyde795d ago

Sunset Overdrive makes very good sense. Palworld might.

Don't know about the others. Hellblade II does make sense given the original launched on PS4 first. Quantum Break was a massive letdown for me. I absolutely hated the whole TV show thing and I don't think anyone should have to relive that on modern hardware.
