The Great Star Fox Zero Controls Debate Highlights Important Lessons

NL:
Star Fox Zero isn't far away, yet rather than unquestionable hype about the first series entry for over a generation, much of the talk is over its control scheme. As the Wii U heads towards its retirement it seems like an apt conflict - innovation vs familiarity, instinctive play versus unfamiliar control.

The two tweets below, featuring our own Damien McFerran and familiar Nintendo fan Roger DiLuigi III, perhaps exemplify the split in opinion that'll only increase once the game hits stores.

Unfortunately, this looks like yet another Wii U game that will be ruined by its gimmicky controls, just like Kirby's Rainbow Curse and Wonderful 101 before it. This quote from the article pretty much sums up the problem: "In single player you play the Nintendo way or no way at all." No flexibility, no ability to just play the game with just a standard controller.

Nintendo seems to want to force these kinds of unappealing gimmicks on their customers, when most people just want to play games in a traditional manner. What a shame.

" just like Kirby's Rainbow Curse and Wonderful 101 before it." You mean cult classic games that people love now?

A lot of reviewers follow me on twitter and they are in love with the game.

You keep pretending like you have a clue. We all love to watch a trainwreck haha

Unfortunately, both games (Kirby and W101) were complete commercial failures, selling only 400k-500k worldwide. Most Wii U owners skipped both of those games, and for good reason: they were crippled by gimmicks that forced people to use the gamepad for no good reason.

Kirby in particular, made gamers stare at the dull, low-res gamepad for the entire game, meanwhile being unable to enjoy the colorful graphics on the TV.

W101 has an awful gimmick where gamers are forced to draw shapes on the gamepad screen, again just degrading the gameplay experience. (And even though you can use the analog stick to "draw" the shapes, it was still a terrible idea).

Now we have Starfox for Wii U, forcing gamers to use the gamepad to aim at enemies, with no other control option available (other than swapping the views, which is useless).

It seems like Miyamoto is the problem with Starfox, just as probably was with Skyward Sword (which forced people to waggle spastically just to play the game). Nintendo really needs to retire that guy, his glory days were over a long time ago.

Wow, you just ramble and ramble without any fact. Just your own ridiculous opinions huh?

I have not seen anything you have ever said get less than 2 disagrees and no agrees.

You have to admit it is pretty pathetic to hate on nintendo falsely all day with nobody really caring.

rjason123692d ago

Yeah, because Schiller is right about everything! You state that it's nintendos way or the highway, yet everytime you post about Nintendo, it's your way or the highway.

BullyMangler3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

starfox Zero does not force players to use the gamePad, its only for precision aiming.

and what about games that proved the gamePad to enhance gaming, games like Deus X, pikmin 3, Splinter Cell, Splatoon, ?

you spoke too soon, huh my boy.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3691d ago

It basically taken Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii further.

deafdani3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

In Wonderful 101 you can dismiss the screen entirely and use the right stick (which is the superior input method, BTW).

At least get your facts straight before trolling.

herbs3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

Your viewpoint is so predictably narrow and biased as usual. You even judge those mentioned games worth by their sales lol. The entire industry would likely devolve into pressing random buttons while watching movies if things went in the direction you apparently prefer. A truly stagnant gamer with dull preferences. Thank god Nintendo exists and actually does interesting and wacky new things its just really too bad you and so many other amateur gamers don't have the capacity or knowledge to appreciate it.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3691d ago

Is all you see is the dollar sign? When it comes to gaming?

All you talk about regarding Nintendo is SALES and Gimmick.

You give no credit where credit is due.
You are just blind by your own hate.

TheDivine3691d ago

Unfortunately I completely agree with you. They force terrible control schemes like touchscreen, motion, and other stuff which ruins what could've been a good game. I blame Myamoto personally. He has done so much for us gamers but he's misguided and does more harm these days. Unless there's a new gimmick games don't get made over there. Look at Sticker Star. Scrapped the idea of a real sequel that improves on The Thousand Year Door because it felt the same and wasn't gimmicky. Totally opposite of what all the fans wanted, the people who buy their games. Hope NX is gimmick free.

Il reserve judgement of Star Fox till I play it but based on the impressions it looks convoluted, impractical, and will prob hamper my enjoyment but I ordered it because of Platinum, not Nintendo. Hope its just like SF64.

Star Fox looks so good. Reviewers are speaking high of it. I loved it when I beat it.

Funny thing is, this article is about a conversation I had.

Random: Takaya Imamura Ponders The Possibility Of Star Fox Zero On 'Switch 2'

It's a good ponder. Nintendo would be stupid to not do it. The more titles and first party line up released on the Switch 2 the more enticed the customer will be.

Star Fox Zero, Was it Really That Bad?

Has time been kind to Star Fox Zero? Does the game have any redeeming qualities that are worthy of revisiting? Should it be considered for a port to the Switch? Was it really that bad?

Haven't played it since it came out, but I really enjoyed it. Can't tell if that's just nostalgia-tinted glasses, or if I actually consider it a good game though lol.

Vits1669d ago

It's a mediocre game that reuses ideas, scenarios, characters and moments from previous ones. Paired with one of the worst control methods that I had the displeasure of using.

CptDville1668d ago

Those controls. Boring and frustrating at the same time. Only with co-op they were bearable, but co-op was restricted to finished levels.

SeTTriP1668d ago

Yes couldn't finish it it was so boring.

MissAubrey1668d ago

controls made me stop playing also what good is a 65inch tv when you have to look at a tiny Wiiu tablet.. same with kirby & the rainbow curse..

Einhander19711668d ago

No it was great, just the control scheme spoilt things really. The wii u screen was not needed for it really

Platinum wants to bring Star Fox Zero to Switch

But any potential design changes would be up to Nintendo if it happens.

I’d rather Star Fox Assault be brought to Switch with online multiplayer instead

Teflon021718d ago

Finally, someone who knows about Assault. Best Star Fox Multi-player imo.

Neonridr1718d ago

or a Star Fox 64 remaster instead.

deadfrag1718d ago

Platinum Games wants to many things but sadly it does not show nothing new for years! They try to jump on all offers but end finishing none!

whitbyfox1718d ago

1: Get rid of the motion controls.

2: Bring us Okami 3.

Good-Smurf1718d ago (Edited 1718d ago )

I rather have them show more of Bayonetta 3 first before they talking about any new project.
This reeks Inafune's funding for Red Ash and Mighty No.9 animated series, both never materialized.
