Dark Souls III doesn’t need an ‘easy mode’

IM PLAYIN throw their ten cents into the Dark Souls III easy mode argument.

"A few days ago, I read an article talking about how Dark Souls III could benefit from an ‘easy mode’. Whilst I can see the author’s point, and that they clearly wrote it with good intentions, I’m not necessarily sure if I agree with them. That’s not because they’re wrong, but perhaps more because it highlights a trend within society that I’ve been noticing of late. That trend being that people are becoming increasingly lazy – and that’s in general, not just with video-games."

Dark Souls is awesome because it allows a person to learn from his/her mistakes. The lore/story is quality because it invites players to explore and find out things for themselves. The problem is we have too much hand holding in gaming now days.

I agree, it's refreshing to have a game that's actually challenging - and that encourages you to go back and be better / try harder, rather than drop the difficulty and coast through.

thekhurg3728d ago (Edited 3728d ago )

It doesn't need an easy mode because this final game in the series is absurdly easy compared to the rest of the games - including Bloodborne.

Last week I was arguing for an easy mode just to give more people access to the game itself and those of us that enjoyed the standard Souls experience could play on that difficulty. But looks like From Software took care of that for everyone by making the base NG+0 experience a lot easier and more forgiving.

ziggurcat3728d ago

@thekurg

is it really that easy or are you just used to the game mechanics? i have always thought all of the other souls games since demon's souls were easier just because i had a much clearer idea of how to approach them.

thekhurg3728d ago (Edited 3728d ago )

@ziggurcat

Honestly - I don't know. Bloodborne was the first From Software game I'd played since Dark Souls 1 and I died more times just trying to kill Blood Starved Beast than I've died during my current play through of DS3.

I've got 5 boss fights down in DS3 - all I've killed the 1st time I've seen them, and I believe I'm close to a 6th just based on what I'm seeing in the area I'm in.

I've had 3 deaths so far. Two from fall damage and one from an invasion. I don't consider myself a Souls expert at all - but this game has just felt so very, very easy. It actually reminds me more of Lords of the Fallen than Bloodborne/Dark Souls 1.

"Dark Souls is awesome because it allows a person to learn from his/her mistakes."

One thing I've always found amusing about the Souls series is how often people say it does this and that, when it really does something else. Like its never been a hard series, just a very specific series built around trial and error. You don't need an absurd amount of skill, mastery of all the mechanics or even a deep understanding of the game to beat it, you just need to constantly fix your problems.

Find a chest, open it, learn its a mimic, die. Find the chest again, attack it because you know its a mimic, move into the swap, die because its poison. Find the chest again, attack it because you know its a mimic, move into the swap, equip poison gear/stay on land, make it to the next section, repeat.

The reason I bring this up is because a lot of games let you learn from your mistakes. You learn when to dodge or what to use in Enter the Gungeon, figure out when to parry enemies in Rising, how to go about a fight in Destiny (namely the raids), where to stand or skills to use in The Division and so forth.

All the Souls series does is force you to learn from your mistakes and they make your blunders pretty obvious. In so many ways Souls is the epitome of overrated difficulty, because it's set up to be, shockingly, easy if you play by its rules. Move forward, die, know what to expect, beat it the second time.

This is why I don't understand why people want an easy mode. The game itself is quite doable, it's just hidden under layers of puzzles designed around tripping you up. This is also why the series is so beloved, because, at its core, it's a very doable game that makes you work towards very obtainable goals.

Shame many people don't seem to grasp this and instead put on their "git good" beanie, shirt and sweats as they think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread because they're good at this game.

Crimzon3728d ago

I thought that jolly cooperation was easy mode? Not sure why they'd need to lower difficulty when you can just summon help if you're struggling.

Summons753728d ago (Edited 3728d ago )

I guess that depends on who you summon. I've summoned people who are total idiots or weren't up to par for the area we were in so they were killed really quick or would for some reason just stop fighting when an NPC invader came in and would watch me fight. Then I've also had the clearly veterans of the series who would do awesome damage and know where they were doing. One of those times it was me and my summoner and we got invaded by two trolls plus an NPC invader and we wrecked them both....I typically hate people who invade but that was one of the best battles I've had since Demon's Souls.

Also this game is on par with Demon's Souls being a very close battle for #1. All they clear calls and takes from Demon's did wonders for this title.

Nilla_Nate3728d ago

Any Dark Souls game is completely beatable you just have to be patient, level up and progress bit by bit. Come to terms with dying right away and you'll be fine.

MRMagoo1233728d ago

or if you have it on pc download a trainer and cheat(game enhance) or make cheats (game enhancing) yourself using cheat engine or art money lol. action replay used to say it was a game enhancer back in the day (action replay was like game genie and game shark)

Aloy-Boyfriend3728d ago (Edited 3728d ago )

If they make an easy mode, what you end up is a breese of a game that has no story, no characters to relate, and a very shallow experince aside fro the RPG elements. The beauty of this series is its difficult.

Allsystemgamer3728d ago

It does have a story with very unique characters. You have to do exploring to figure things out.

WellyUK3728d ago

It's not needed when you can just focus strength and Vigor makes the game easy mode for you.

Allsystemgamer3728d ago

You would need strength scaling weapons in order to take full advantage of that. Even then, dodging is way more effective than armor. You forgot mentioning endurance to actually attack and block.

Those builds tend to fail because of a straight limited scope. Many enemies go down faster from other weapon builds.

Timing is key.
