Can PlayStation Plus Ever Please Everyone?

Toby from The Game Bolt: "Sony’s Playstation Plus is in a sticky spot, and it has been for a while. The free games every month for almost a year now have largely been made up of games most people either don’t want to play or curios. Whilst there is an argument for giving away games that people likely wouldn’t ever have played, I think, for the most part, that PS4 owners would like to see the odd ‘AAA’ game given away as part of the rewards program."

It used to please me a lot in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Now it's a service I still look forward to just not as much as I did before.

I still love the discounts, cloud saves, free game trials, and free episodes of original PlayStation tv shows such as Powers that PS+ gives me, just not the IGC as I did before.

All in all it's still a very worthwhile subscription program that gives me more bang for my buck.

For the Ps3 you didn't need it so they put really good games on there to entice people to join now it's a service you need to play online and Sony knows it so they don't try as hard

plus the ps4 sales are huge not much competition they don't need to spend money on aaa games for psp when they know people will join anyway.

xHeavYx3696d ago

What people forget is that the PS4 is a relatively new system. When the free game thing started, the PS3 had been out for many years, so there were many more games available for it.

DDMNeo3696d ago

everything xHeavYx said. I mean seriously. The system was 6 years old in 2012. Please remember that! At that point there were so many throwaway titles, poor sellers, and games well past their prime that could easily be given for free. We're half that into PS4, and it's a generation that started off pretty rough due to AAA publishers thinking console gaming was going to die off.

fenome3696d ago

@xHeavYx

Exactly, people seem to forget that the PS3 had a HUGE library to choose from to release for free on Plus. Sony's just getting that ball rolling right now on the PS4 so it's only a matter of time before it snowballs.

I do think it's time to release Knack or Infamous SS onto the service though.

uth113696d ago

This was probably their plan all along with PS+. They wanted the revenue stream that MS was getting for XBL, but they couldn't suddenly announce that playing online would be a paid feature on PS3, or even PS4. So they launched the service with free games to entice people to join, then announce it would be required for online play with PS4, and a lot of people wouldn't care as they were already paying for it.

Seraphim3695d ago

I'm not sure how it works but people see these as free. Thing is I imagine Sony pays the developer/publisher a certain price either per download or a flat rate to offer these games for free. These games most likely aren't given to Sony so they can offer them for Free to PS+ subscribers.

xHeavYx is spot on. A lot of those great PS3 titles were offered because the console was so old. Granted some games over a year old were released at one point but often the big games were pretty old; 2-3 plus. Some were also games that didn't sell close to expectations. I think in another year or two perhaps we'll see some bigger titles a little more often but lets not forget the PS4, while old is still relatively new. Even if a big game like inFamous, Killzone, Destiny, Diablo 3 or what have you were to be offered a vast majority would still complain. Like I've always said. You want a game go buy it. Don't sit around expecting Sony/PS to give you anything but when something is offered you want to check out do just that and appreciate the fact it was free.

And those tv shows you speak of are not in all regions, not in mainland Europe for instance, we don't have any PS TV/Movie functionality at all except the 3rd party ones like Netflix, Hulu, etc.

I never had PS+, I play MP games tho so I find it worth it and the discounts, cloud saves and the occasional 'free' game I like are a great bonus. Without the need for online play I'm not sure I would have PS+...

Leahjo3696d ago

You should try ea access,oh wait,Sony decided you didn't want the choice.for the gamers....

Aenea3695d ago

And I think they are right, I don't see any added value for me personally...

FallenAngel19843695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

@ Sean

You seem to forget that some PS3 games offered on PS+'s IGC often came out 1 year earlier. Games like Bioshock Infinite and Metal Gear Rising were released in 2013 then offered on the service in 2014, so your reasoning is flawed and outdated.

XO also was released in 2013, yet has featured AAA games on its GWG service, making your argument even more absurd. Even Vita had a number of AAA games offered on PS+ despite releasing in late 2011/early 2012 depending on the region.

PS+ had a way more balanced offering back than it does now

No. Nothing can and nothing will ever please everyone. I don't think I've played a psn+ game since rocket league but that doesn't really bother me. I don't see anything wrong with the games that are coming out, they just don't look particularly interesting to me to take time out of the other games I already have on my list. There's been some gems on ps+ this gen so far though. Resogun, outlast and first light come to mind. For all the complainers with loud voices online, there are just as many sitting quietly at home enjoying the games that are being released to the service. Even if it were AAA games being released (they'll get there eventually), people would still complain they don't have an interest in the ones on offer or that they already have it. Even those who keep shouting that knack should at least be there by now (which is true because it's a great game) will complain that "oh it's just crappy knack blah blah blah". Moral of the story is, you can't please everyone, so don't try to because you'll end up pleasing no one.

I love how people automatically assume that everyone is always going to complain. While its true that there were complainers even back in the glory days, there were many more defenders and a lot of people were extremely satisfied with the program.

If I'd say PS + sucked, even as later as 2014 on here, I'd probably get a few agrees and 40+ disagrees. Now a days I can say it and it would probably be reversed.

"I don't see anything wrong with the games that are coming out, they just don't look particularly interesting to me to take time out of the other games I already have on my list."

The issue is largely rooted in how things changed. Plus went from being a failing program offering games on par or worse than the current offerings to routinely giving titles like Batman, Demon's Souls, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet and much more to offering titles many people simply don't care about.

The other, arguably bigger, issue is that Plus changed when the PS4 came out. Before it was an optional program that offered cool games and was an amazing deal, then Sony made it required for online on the PS4 and over time the quality of freebies went downhill. It gives the sense that Sony thinks they can just give whatever and people will keep supporting it because of the online requirement. Especially when the program went from boasting a 70+ MC minimum to thinking 54 is acceptable.

"Moral of the story is, you can't please everyone, so don't try to because you'll end up pleasing no one."

I also think your story is flawed. You're basically saying, Sony can't win, so they shouldn't try.

Regardless of what you think, feel or believe, Sony turned Plus around with the IGC, where it was well praised for quite a while (the only complaints were typically when another region got something better). Sure there were off months, but most people were quite satisfied with Plus and the idea of complaining was foreign to most users (outside of other regions getting things they rather have).

Now a days people are largely dissatisfied with the offers again, yet Sony seems to keep offering worse titles. There is not pleasing people and borderline giving up like we have now.

Seraphim3695d ago

that's just it. You can never please everyone. As individuals our expectations, taste, opinion, interests, the fact we (most) have the ability to freely think mean that as individuals there will never be one thing that pleases all.

Unfortunately with the internet, self entitled, unrealistic expectations, and so on we hear far too often and far too many of these complaints.

_-EDMIX-_3696d ago

Agreed, games are debated on their own basis anyway.

No game can satisfy "everyone".

Free_Fro3696d ago

There's no such thing as pleasing everyone. .

I simply see it as a requirement to play online, I don't expect anything else from it in terms of 'free' games. If they ever put a game on I actually want to play I'd be shocked.

Someone never had PS3's PSN, back when Sony cared.

My Subscription to PSN does not depend on the free games they offer.

"Too bad PS4 owners won’t be able to play it as a backward compatible game, huh?"

Which is a shame, because this would have been an awesome month for PSplus.

Unfortunately for myself, I have already packed up my PS3 (and 360) to clear some shelf space when I got my X. Hopefully for next gen (and if the patent rumors are true) Sony will offer a lot more titles on PS+ that range from all their previous consoles.

2pacalypsenow2669d ago

It still is, you get Hitman and MGS4

gangsta_red2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

Yeah, but you don't get MGS4 playable on the PS4. That would have been cool to have the PS3 PS+ free games playable on PS4.

2pacalypsenow2669d ago

That doesn't change the fact that it's a great month for PlayStation+ members.

gangsta_red2669d ago

That does change the fact completely. Especially for those that don't own a PS3.

uptownsoul2668d ago (Edited 2668d ago )

@gangsta_red

Both are offering 4 games playable on current gen consoles (2 AAA & 2 indie games)…

For PS4 the 2 AAA games are: For Honor & Hitman 1; while the 2 indie games are: Gunhouse & Rogue Aces

For Xbox One the 2 AAA games are: Assassin's Creed: Rogue & Star Wars: Jedi Academy; while the 2 Indies games are: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon & Super Bomberman R...

The only difference is that the 2 AAA games for Xbox One are old gen games…while the 2 AAA games for PS4 is current gen

PS4's offering could be better with back compat…But its still better than Xbox One's offerings

gangsta_red2668d ago

Yeah, not really comparing the offerings from both Xbox and PlayStation though.

But GWG already offered For Honor a while ago and Hitman is on Game Pass for anyone who subscribes to enjoy.

Orionsangel2667d ago

Seems Sony is aware of this and the PS5 may have backwards compatibility.

OffRoadKing2667d ago

So its not an awesome month for anyone because you packed up your PS3? smh Still a better month for Plus then GWG regardless.

If you look at each services free games. You will see that GWG also has re-released a couple titles multiple times, and that Plus tends to beat it to the punch with more relevant titles that make their way to Live a month or more after.

TGGJustin2854d ago

Do you mean that GWG has offered the same game free more than once b/c no I'm pretty sure they haven't. Also both services tend to have a lot of carryover. trackmania Turbo and Trials Fusion were on GWG long before they came to PS+.

segamaniaco2854d ago

Obvious PLUS WON, they will give 9 games vs 4 on gold.

Add a year to your PlayStation Plus membership for just $47

If you need to top off your PlayStation Plus membership with an extra year, $45 is the best excuse.

Should I wait for the 40$ PlayStation Plus deal?
My subscription just ended.... not in rush to renew it atm.

KnowTechie2861d ago

Those days of $40 are long gone.

DreadGara2861d ago

Yeah I saw that in the article, Last time I paid 40 bucks for my subscription and it was last year....
I dunno but I find 40$ is too much for a year subscription still.
