Wii U: Successes and Failures

When a major Japanese news media, Nikkei, published a story that Nintendo was going to stop production of the Wii U in 2016, for many this did not sound like a surprise. Nintendo has not confirmed this and informed that it has no plans to stop manufacturing Wii U consoles any time soon. The question remains though why Wii U fell behind its two main competitors.

I've had my since launch, sure there's been some major dry patches but i've still enjoyed the system. ZombiU even ranks as one of my fave horror titles

EddieNX 3704d ago

Zombiu needed more melee weapons and less grunting, othe than that though it does get ya heart racing at times!

conanlifts3704d ago

I really enjoyed zombiu, until the end. I hour a game breaking bug uploading the panacea and couldn't progress. Until then it was great.

wonderfulmonkeyman3704d ago

Ditto.
People claim it's had too few games to be worth getting, but most of what I've gotten for it has lasted me up to this point; that's just how good many of its best games are.
I don't feel like I've been let down by the quality of its games, even if the quantity leaves something to be desired.

the wiiu is a complete failure- there is no success, it just sucks.

there is no single experience on the wiiu that wouldnt be possible without wiiu. and since nintendo went out of its way to produce a console based around a specific controller concept, that to me is a complete failure.

in other words, there is not one single game that warrants that stupid controller.

splatoon is the closest they got to a total marriage of game/wiiu interface. but to me its still not a success because splatoon is not the sole reason anyone would buy a wiiu.

i mean really, did nintendo force that controller on us just so we can play splatoon? is that the best they got?

mario kart, xenoblade, mario maker etc, all fantastic games, yes. but they could have worked on any console.

the wii was a fantastic console because it did offer a unique way to play, an experience that couldnt be found anywhere else.. until the competition copied it.

the wiiu is a complete failure because it attempts to offer that same exclusive experience, but delivered nothing.

PixelGateUk3703d ago

Have fun playing Bayonetta 2 on your...oh

wonderfulmonkeyman3703d ago

That 'stupid controller' has all the same essential buttons that other pads do.
You're whining over nothing because you plain hate Nintendo.
Sit down.

The gamepad is quite an innovative method to navigate the ui..
Entering text, (post Wii U) on my XB360 is just painful..lol

Might play that this weekend on PS4, they gave it for free for the PSN Plus.

From what I've seen, its the least played Nintendo console by my friends and some of them hold world records in speedruns for some Nintendo titles.

The biggest failure was clearly it only selling 12 million. I don't know what I can say the biggest success is for Wii U to he honest.

* Wii U Successes = Nintendo made 1st party games

* Wii U Failures = 3rd party support

The people thought Nintendo would actually stop production of the Wii U this year are absurd. Nintendo hasn't even globally discontinued the decade old DS or Wii, yet some actually thought Nintendo would prematurely pull the plug on their current console.

The Wii U is a console that's worthwhile for some but offputting for others.

_-EDMIX-_3703d ago

I mean....not really. Nintendo is known for getting rid of their last console before they start marketing a new one.

This is their worst selling console in their history, it would not be some shock if they actually did. Its why the news came as expected to many, many gamers.

They are already working NX so I don't know how "worthwhile" it actually is to the company to keep making a failing console while promoting another.

PhoenixUp3703d ago (Edited 3703d ago )

Ugh excuse me?

NES was discontinued 1995 in North America and 2003 in Japan.
SNES was launched in 1991 in North America and 1990 in Japan.

SNES was discontinued 1999 in North America and 2003 in Japan.
N64 was launched 1996 in North America & Japan.

N64 was discontinued 2003 in North America and 2002 in Japan.
GameCube was released 2001 in North America and Japan.

GameCube was discontinued worldwide in 2007.
Wii was released worldwide in 2006.

Wii was discontinued 2013 in Japan.
Wii U was released 2012 worldwide.

So as you can clearly see, Nintendo doesn't immediately discontinue their current console right before the launch of their new one. They always wait sometime after the launch to do so.

They haven't even officially discontinued the Wii or the DS for that matter in North America yet. People are getting way ahead of themselves to even consider that Wii U would die off so soon this year.

It's worthwhile to keep Wii U on the market since it continues to produce a profit irregardless of its position. They'd be doing themselves no favor by discontinuing the console anymore than expecting Sony or Microsoft to discontinue the PS3 or 360 respectively this year.

no super mario 64 spiritual successor or sequel = fail.

EddieNX 3704d ago

Ive loved my Wiiu since day 1 im typing this on the gamepad right now. At times it almost felt as if Nintedo were deliberately making bad decisions with the console. I know if some of my own ideas were used it would of sold more than it has and I bet you can probably say the same.

Just too many "I wish they'd do this or do that" issues. Still one of my favorite consoles in its own silly way. Let's hope NX is more like GC an N64

RosweeSon3704d ago

Absolutely and when a console has at least 5-10 that warrant its purchase anyone who can't give it the time of day, well it's their loss but mad, I'm day one and been happy with it ever since sure it's not used every single day but life gets in the way and so does work and ps4/Vita/3ds... Xbox 360 and PS3 previously but it does get used and when it does its enjoyed immensely got a couple of the classics sat in the backlog waiting to go still but I like to try and save some of the best stuff to last, Lego city undercover, super Mario 3D world and smash Bros Wii u (been nailing 3ds version) and poss finish off Mario kart dlc but yeah amazing console and some of the best games around by far. More timeless classic games from Nintendo let's face it how many best of list of games be it from the last year, 5, 10, of all time best games have Nintendo games all the way through them they always dominate those lists and there's a reason.... Top Quality!!!

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

AuraAbjure86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer87d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot87d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno87d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay87d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno85d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK86d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
