Dark Souls Easy Mode: Difficulty Defines The Game

Pixelgate writes:

''Dark Souls 3′s release is just around the corner, but does it need a easy mode? After a number of articles posted by sites, and comments seen on various boards, the debate over adding a Easy mode is as strong as ever. Does Dark Souls 3 need easier settings? is ‘get good’ a valid argument?''

I would prefer that a game like Dark Souls 3 has an easy mode as the player could decide how he wants to enjoy the game, with brutal difficulty or with easier gameplay settings.

PixelGateUk3695d ago

For me, the challenge is the reason i play. I like the idea i have to learn the game and use my knowledge as the game goes on. Same with Fire Emblem Awaking a few years back

Miguelitons3695d ago

Sure, but with an easy mode the player can decide if he wants to have a challenge or not. Some players don't have the time (like myself) to learn a game and prefer to enjoy it than hating it ;-).

vickers5003694d ago (Edited 3694d ago )

Same here Miguelitons. I really like the art style of the souls series the bosses look cool and everything, but I don't have the patience to play the same level over and over again until I get it right. It's frustrating, because I want to like it, but I just can't as long as it's so demanding.

Oh well.

freshslicepizza3694d ago

on demons souls there was a cheat where you could duplicate items and basically just fully stack your attributes. made the game a lot easier but it also took the challenge away. every person is different and one could argue you get more enjoyment if you can challenge yourself and overcome it. you also have to consider everyone has different thresh-holds on how much patience they have.

this is why i am always an advocate for options as long as those options do not impact everyone. why would i care if someone decided to use the duplicate glitch? doesn't bother me one bit unless i play them online.

@Miguelitons

The Souls games and Bloodborne are Action RPG's and as such take in the order of 40 plus hours to play. In addition there is crafting and for armour and weapons as well as different magic's.

There is also the fact that these games have an optional on-line component where you can request help and even get invaded.

Just those features alone rule out casual players.

Don't like it well too bad. Next we will have casual's demanding games like Final Fantasy should be limited to 10 hours long and have a skip option if a boss battle is too hard.

ShottyatLaw3694d ago

If there is an easy difficulty and a hard difficulty, wouldn't both types of players get to enjoy the game?

hay3694d ago

@Miguelitons: You have the answer right there in dis/agrees. About 20% of players would like to have an easier diff setting. 20% from average of 2.5mil is additional 500k copies sold. Totally worth it.

No!

This series isn't trying to reach as many people as possible. It's meant to test the skills of harcore players-- those who enjoy challenge.

Here's your easy more people: get good! Overlevel your characters. Don't have time? Too bad! RPGs requires character building and developemnt a lot. Play something else.

TWB3694d ago (Edited 3694d ago )

The biggest thing that bothers me about this, is that many have described the series as sort of a refuge from easy and non stimulative modern games. The gamers formed that refuge, so why on earth would they (the developers) also need to bend to the same form that these gamers have tried to escape?

Miyazaki has ever since Demons Souls stated that they dont make difficult games for the sake of it either way, they spice up the games with some added challenge. Demons, Dark 1 and Dark 3 seem to all be pretty consistent in their difficulty and they really havent gotten any more difficult even though people would very much like that. Bloodborne arguably could be considered harder than the rest, but even that depends how you used to play the previous games. Some found BB considerably easier than DaS1.

Let me ask a counter question: why did these gamers even need the Souls games? If your anwser isnt downright "mechanical challenge", then you are wrong. People dont find the standard shooters or other regular ARPG games captivating even with the added difficulty, because its just more or less about scaling the enemy stats and/or downscaling the player stats.

However, seeing that some people defend "easy mode" without even suggesting how to implement it into a game that is based on mechanical difficulty, that just tells even more how these people dont even understand these games or why the core base loves them.

You cant just give more stats to the player character because you still need to learn, and if you happen to be competent enough to learn the mechanics, you are competent enough to finish the "normal" mode.

You can already try to make the game ridiculously easy for yourself by overleveling or enganging in coop constantly. Coop already is a complete easy mode, but it requires you to rely on another stranger (kind of like reading others messages, its a player helping another).

And correcting one part about your comment: the Souls games are nowhere near brutal in difficulty. Challenge is a very lenient or tempting type of difficulty. It means that the game throws something at you that may make you say "this seems tough, but very doable" "Im probably capable of handling out this situation somehow"

The games only become somewhat brutal if you try the SL1/BL4 challenge, meaning you dont level your character at all, and even then there are more difficult things out there.

Long comment and I dont give a sht.

TL;DR of sorts.
-> Gamers sick of easy or artificially difficult games search for refuge
-> find the Souls series, nobody is bothering them because nobody cares about the games
-> the creator very much agrees with the gamers and wants to treat them like they are intelligent people
-> Games get popular and gain quite massive fanbase based on the fame of and marketing portraying the games to be difficult
-> People who previously didnt care, now care and want the priviledge of dipping their toes into these games, but with a inclusive easy mode, not even realizing that the added challenge (not "brutal difficulty") is what makes you think, live and appreciate the games.

WHY?!?

isa_scout3694d ago

I agree completely. After I completed Bloodborne a sense of accomplishment washed over me, and it was a feeling I hadn't felt since the snes era of gaming. I went back to play the Souls series after that and gained a deep appreciation for what they are. If they had an easy mode that feeling of accomplishment is gone, so why even bother? People that call it to hard don't quite grasp why it's hard. It's hard because we're so use to games babysitting us and holding our hand every step of the way. If this game released 20 years ago it'd be your standard difficulty for that era. Seriously guys, run up to an enemy, back up and study his attack animations, and when you feel confident that you've worked out his attacks move in for the kill. Not much more to it.....Unless it's a boss then prepare for the same thing, but plan on dying a handful of times. There I just taught you everything you need to know about beating a Souls game on standard difficulty....lol

Yo you soft bro.

Like Charmin ultra soft.

You probably put neosporin in ya paper cuts.

I bet you drink milk with ice in it.

You probably sit down when you pee.

You the dude that clean his face with baby wipes.

Lol nah nah nah, I'm messin bro, the difficulty is what makes these games what they are, if you remove that then your left with an "ok" game.

The difficulty forces you to adapt, think, react, it rewards patience, perseverance and critical thinking.

It's never unfare, just very unforgiving. If you fail it's your own fault and you have to adjust accordingly.

Nerfing the difficulty or giving the option for such removes all of that and kills the game length and the wow factory when somebody clears it using only their toes, or beats every boss bare handed holding a guitar hero guitar upside down blindfolded.

Every game doesn't have to be for everyone. Games like these make hardcores out of casuals.

Man up or be another man down.

frostypants3694d ago (Edited 3694d ago )

Yes. I am with you. Similarly I would prefer Call of Duty had a gun-free mode that allowed me to enjoy the game as I'd like to, passing out donuts and Frappucinos to the opposition.

Jesus Christ...

If the game isn't for you, the game isn't for you. Get over it.

I am not a huge fan of challenging games, and always play games for their story or at the highest, the medium difficulty. However, I absolutely love Darksouls, and immensely enjoyed Bloodborne as well, as the challenge makes you want to keep playing.

I would personally recommend you to try out Hyper Light Drifter if you love games with challenge.

PixelGateUk3695d ago

Been eyeing up Hyper Light Drifter for a while now, only thing stopping me is DiRt Rally and Dark Souls 3's nearing release

KeyAppearance3695d ago

So many games, so little money and time. Next month is especially crammed! DOOM, Mirror's Edge, Homefront, Uncharted 4... -.-

PixelGateUk3695d ago

Warhammer Total War as well

rip wallets everywhere lol

Momo1183695d ago

you summed it up well. difficulty defines this game and its perfect for its audience

Free_Fro3695d ago

I think the difficulty is exaggerated..
It's just right..

frostypants3694d ago

Exactly. It's "old school" hard. Totally surmountable once you learn it. Too many people want interactive stories, not real games...then get mad at real games.

Goldby3694d ago

there are reasons, known beyond the cosmos why people brag about completing DS/BB and not Assassin's Creed or Just Cause
