HTC Vive Review | IGN

IGN:
With two major, groundbreaking features that set it head and shoulders above its current competition, the HTC Vive is the most capable and versatile of the pair of near-magical virtual reality headsets you can buy today. Thanks to sensors that track your position as you physically move around a room and allow you to use your hands to interact with the imaginary as though it were real, the Vive is vastly more effective at making me feel present within a game or other virtual environment than anything else I’ve experienced. All of that comes with drawbacks, however, in the areas of ease of use, practicality for most homes, and most significantly, reliability.

"the HTC Vive is the most capable and versatile of the pair of near-magical virtual reality headsets you can buy today."

Daayum! VR game is so strong. Okay now I'm deffo gonna beef up le PC.

"The Vive’s other unique feature is the light and versatile controllers, which reproduce your hand movements in virtual space with such precision that it feels las though my hand is actually in that world"

The controllers are going to be important imo. Using a traditional controller with VR seems to be counter-productive imo.

You still need a lot more room space than the Oculus rift though. I would have to put my PC in my living room :/

Gazondaily3695d ago

I'm in the UK so I'd have to put my PC in the garden.

Pandamobile3695d ago

You don't actually need any more space than the Oculus Rift. You just have the option to scale up your playspace if you have more room.

NegativeCreepWA3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

I'm really happy with the Rift, but with in minutes of putting it on, I thinking much better it could be with the touch controllers. If you need everything right now go with the Vive.

The main reason I choose the Rift was because the touch controllers actually have joysticks, unfortunately now I have to wait for the full experience.

ShadowKnight3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

I went with the Rift too. I can wait for the touch controllers and the full experience not to mention it was a little cheaper. Love the speaker on the headset.

Funny: I am NOT calling anyone out in what is a civil chain of discussion here - only observing the patterns I've watched over a period as a VR fan in general. When folks praise Vive for its room scale ability, Rift fans are quick to point out that Oculus has the same capability with Touch.

When people criticize Vive for requiring space, the Rift fans are quick to explain how Rift doesn't need all that space and is thus better. Too, Vive fans are quick to point out that it works the same as Rift in seated VR.

They both appear to be great HMDs with emphasis in different areas while having the capacity (SHOULD developers feel inclined to do so) to mimic the others.

I've read reviews that endorse the screen on the Oculus more and others where the Vive display is preferred. There are reviews that say Oculus is more comfortable and others that state the opposite. It is clear, and I think important to recognize, that how one rates the VR experience may be more personal than a vast majority of the games/products we are accustomed to seeing reviewed. It doesn't bother me too much because a clear picture is being painted and to me it is truly exciting.

There are currently two very nice options with emphasis in two different areas/aspects of VR. For those of us who love VR it means that we win. The fact that this is really here is almost hard to believe once it is experienced. I want to take some world tours in VR (might even make the price seem very reasonable all of a sudden). Bring on the good stuff.

I can't see myself clearing an entire room and shutting myself off from the rest of the world to use this on a regular basis. It's pretty cool though, just not something I would buy.
That's the problem with vr, most people aren't going to want to wear those helmets, it's just not practical.

WeAreLegion3695d ago

They will once they try it. And many VR experiences are surprisingly social.

M-M3695d ago

You have to try it man. I was on the same boat as you(I was saying "it's probably like a 3D TV strapped to your face"). You don't notice the headset or wires since you're busy having so much fun.

big_dom_part_23695d ago

Well, you can just wait about 30 years for magic contact lenses you just pop in, yeah? The rest of us will have to make do with "those helmets" realistically.

ps360s3695d ago

you don't need a big room. in the office we have all the VR headsets excluding psvr and a bedroom will be fine but of course a big room is good

WalterWJR3695d ago

Having used a gearvr I can say this is my experience. The goggles are just not comfortable for me to wear for even short periods if time. I'm hoping psvr is better for me as the weight appears to be on the head opposed to your face.

Testfire3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

From everything I've researched,Gearvr isn't even in the same league as Oculus,PSVR or Vive and it shouldn't be used as a measuring stick for the vr platform as a whole.

boing13695d ago

@Testfire

Sure, processing power on Galaxy phones isn't on par with beefed up PC, but there are some really cool games which perfectly show what VR really means. Also, consuming other media than games on GearVR is actually better because of higher res screen. 3D and 360 movies look great. There is zero lag, just like on other headsets and the precision of movement is impeccable. If you already have S6 or S7 I highly recommend to get it. It's the cheapest way to experience some quality VR.

Well deserved score. Valve and HTC really did create something special. It doesn't look or seem like it, but motion controls add a whole new level of immersion. Using Tilt Brush or playing Space Pirate Trainer is too much fun, and it actually feels like you're in that world. Wish I could show it to more people since not everyone can afford a Vive.

Anomander3695d ago

I'm putting up money to get this. My office space at home will just be big enough once I clear out the computer chair and reading chair. Plus you don't always need to move around with it. I am very interested in some of the non-gaming aspects of it as well. I just wished there was a way to send the image from the PC to the living room TV so the family can watch what each person is doing. Not enough room for everyone to hang out in the office.
