How will developers make money from VR?

Price pressure is going to set in early for the all-digital platforms; game creators will need to explore how people are willing to pay.

Early on, devs stand to make a lot of cash as software will naturally be limited day one. So expect a lot of sub-par games released by devs looking to cash in on early VR excitement. Its the same with all software.

Past that, it all depends on the reception. A lot of unknowns here in terms of usage etc.

Sadly your protip doesn't work nowadays. Now it just causes issues and hate campaigns.

So many words and nothing was actually said. There's being intelligent, and there's filling paragraphs to make a quota. It's why I stopped buying the magazine. let's be real about it... Real talk...

VR content will make money if the content is GOOD. Has nothing to do with pricing, has nothing to do with free to play, has nothing to do with being casual or core and has nothing to do with artificial length with mindless side missions and collecting. People can tell when a developer CARES about the product they make. When you make garbage, don't expect a returning customer.

When you make something compelling, something fun, something with value for the price, you build a brand and customers will come back for more of what you're offering every time. Make a good VR product, you'll make money.

Developers are jumping in because the VR headsets WORK. No half @ssing like kinect. No actors misleading people. No onstage miming. No 500 million dollar marketing campaigns. People see it, people use it, they know it's immersive and works.

Any developer who tries to skimp on quality will learn a hard lesson. Those making great things will find themselves leading the pack with consumers. Just because you're a big publisher means nothing. Rocket league and Minecraft show that you don't need millions to make a hit.

VR is gonna have a very low install base which means their games are gonna have to either be bundled in for free or they're gonna have to hope the games become hits on low install base hardware. You're making fun of Kinect, but Kinect software sold on 360 because the hardware sold.

Since my crystal ball is in the shop I can't make any accurate predictions, however I do think it would be reasonable to say that the PSVR will sell from October to the end of December between 2% and 10 % of its possible user base which is approximately 40 plus million.

The above guess would put sales of the PSVR between 800,000 and 4 million and this is not taking into account people buying a PS4, PSVR and camera during the lead-up to Christmas.

Since the PSVR can do VR and cinema modes it is quite possible that some new buyers may just get the PSVR as a private cinema screen and US$800 is very cheap for a virtual screen that can display up to 5 meters in the diagonal.

At a rough guess I suspect that PSVR will sell between 1.5 million and 2.5 million before the end of December providing there is stock to meet the demand.

Kinect didn't work as advertised because Microsoft removed the extra that would have made it work as advertised
http://www.gamesindustry.bi...

They went cheap and the result was cheap motion control that barely worked. They thought by using one of the 360's internal chips and going software to make up for the chip loss would do it. It DIDN'T.

Second, not making ONE..not ONE core game is also half @ssing. Move had casual games and core games like Killzone 3 that was awesome to play.

I make fun because kinect is now just a high priced mic as Microsoft has removed all motion function for it on Xbox one.

Go all in or go home is the moral of the story.

Well, if dev's make a good VR game, I would expect the VR gamers to support this with real cash! 😉

I played through most of the PS4 version of the game but stopped because another game came out. I bought it last year for PC with the intention of using the VR mod but haven't gotten around to setting it up. I am glad I waited.

Great game, even better in VR. A little drawn out by the end, but I hope we see CA do something a little different with the sequel.

OtterX273d ago (Edited 273d ago )

Sweet. I also rebought this game on Steam for the purpose of VR. I'll have to give it another shot w full immersive controls. I had only tried it out briefly before.

It's funny this was never officially released at retail as a VR game, bc it feels so perfect for it!

Yeah. Not the best dev by a long shot, but I've heard Bulletstorm improved a lot after the initial launch and all the complaints.

Abnor_Mal349d ago

I bought Bulletstorm VR but couldn’t get into it at the time, the controls were a bit off, but at the time I was finishing up Arizona Sunshine1/2. Most likely the reason the controls felt off, plan to go back to it soon.

I really wanted to love Outriders. I was hooked on it at first but it was so janky the further I got into it. I had to force myself to finish the game. I liked it just enough to buy the expansion but I burned through that jankfest also. It sorta gave me Division 2 vibes a little bit and that's what helped me through it. I don't think I would trust any of their VR stuff anyway.

Playing it right now looks amazing! :D
so much fun, i hope they make a vr mod for crysis 2 / 3 too!

DivineHand125397d ago

This is amazing. This is the direction VR should go in to boost adoption. Since I have beaten every Crysis except 1, this is now a good excuse to correct that problem.
