Dark Souls III: Should We Accept Frame Rate Issues?

Jo from GamersFTW writes: "Most have been waiting to get their hands on this soul crushingly difficult game. It has become popular due its difficulty and it is one of the few games out there that gives us such a challenging time while playing. As the third instalment in the Dark Souls franchise, Dark Souls III has a lot to live up to. Reviews have been generally positive and people are thoroughly enjoying it. However, it would appear that this has been marred somewhat by the poor frame rate players are experiencing as they get further into the game."

The unfortunate reality is that the ability to patch a game coupled with gamers' impatience and rush to buy a game the second it has been released has conditioned companies to believe that it's ok to release a buggy, broken game. Should we accept frame rate issues, rushed games, bugs, and lackluster content? No, just as we shouldn't accept a movie that's filmed entirely out of focus. But it seems we already have.

I'll try for myself and let you know. Sometimes the Internet makes things bigger than they are.

BlackTar1873692d ago

Sometimes? EVERYTIME!!!! without a doubt if anything bad at all happens with anything the internet turns into a S8itstorm of nonsense.

There is no reason that after so many games with the same engine or a modified version their games should be having those severe drops in certain areas or frame pacing issues. IF it happened one or two times and then they remedied it in the sequel thats understandable but damn like four different games with the same engine and they all have similar issues, well between fps drops and frame pacing.

I do agree though that some of those issues get blown out of proportion lol To be honest not everyone is sensitive to frame pacing (i never noticed it until i read it on neogaf and had to really pay attention). Also the fps drops from what i remember only happen at certain points but not for the majority of the game but ppl talk about it as if it hinders their enjoyment of the game (maybe it does but not mine)

In conclusion im not saying Fromsoft arent good developers because their games are awesome. Im not saying dont buy their games. Im just saying that we should care about the issues and let them know they need to seriously fix them (i know many of us have gone on twiiter to let them know in the past).

Eiyuuou3692d ago

I agree with your point, but the games rarely share engines.

Wallstreet373692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

Im not an expert but im pretty sure they built their own proprietary engine and used the same one for most of their games. Demon Souls, DS1 and maybe 2 is the same engine and BB and DS3 may be a different engine or modified old engine. The games look too much alike. Physics and other stuff are a different thing and i know Havok was used in DS 1 and 2 but not in BB or 3 i believe.

A good example is Uncharted. Uncharted has used the same engine but modified sequel to sequel for years.

While I do agree with your line of thought, I also think that we, as customers, can only speak with our wallets. So you're not saying "don't buy their game", at the same time you say that we should let them know that this is unaceptable. And how does that works, exactely? Complaining in their tweeter account?

Wallstreet373692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

Your right and i totally agree. Its a catch 22 for me that ive had to deal with. On one hand if i keep buying it im saying the performance issues are ok but on the other if i dont buy them i lose out on an incredible journey. Also developers make sequels and new ips based off sales so if everyone that didnt like the performance didnt buy the game we could potentially see no sequels.

As for twitter and letting you voice be known lol. Youd be surprised how powerful a twitter campaign or a good amount of ppl letting a dev know they are unhappy can go along way. The no drm xbox one agenda got heavily pushed via neogaf and twitter and ultimately affected sales and made Microsoft change their direction. Tweets and posts to Evolution in regards to Driveclub also went a long way but i of course money has the biggest impact.

You know i have a bias in favor of Fromsoft because yes i still buy their games regardless of the issue (plus the issues dont hinder my enjoyment, as i mentioned before im not sensitive to frame pacing either). I cant say the same for Bethsda games i stopped bying way back in the ps3 era due to bugs and glitches.

Yes all this is a huge dilemma for me.

Every souls game had issues with the frame drops in certain locations and it didn't ruin the experience.

But nothing can't beat Valley of Defilement in Demon's Souls.

Umbasa3692d ago

Blight Town is x100 worse.

Der_Kommandant3692d ago

For me it goes like this:

Valley of Defilement > Blight Town > The Gutter

DarXyde3692d ago (Edited 3692d ago )

Oh, I would completely give it to The Valley of Defilement.

That place ran like a Nintendo 64 trying to run Final Fantasy XIII.

Obviously exaggerating, but yeah, From Software could have done much more with that place.

BlackTar1873692d ago

i found the worst place in all of souls games was the ghost area in Dark Souls 1. that frame rate issue coupled with enemies that come thru the wall.
