What If VR Fails?

ThisGenGaming says "With the Oculus Rift now officially released and the HTC Vive on it’s way very soon, it looks like virtual reality is on the rise. The question that remains to be seen is whether virtual reality is just a passing trend or a true revolution that will change gaming forever. There have been so many times where “the next big thing” actually ends up quietly fading into the background and slowly dies out. In fact, this has already happened to virtual reality products in the past like Nintendo’s Virtual Boy and various virtual reality arcade machines that began popping up in the ’90s."

"Fail" is a big word.

darthv723701d ago

And VR is a big expense... if it fails then it only has the limited scope to blame. there needs to be a consumer version that is not limited to one side or the other. It must be able to be compatible with multiple entertainment sources from console to PC to set top boxes.

It will get there at some point but right now there is a divide that has yet to be crossed.

VR isn't going to fail. It is going to be a another medium. No matter who ends up having the most popular VR product, VR is here to stay. The technology finally exist to do it right. In the future, we are only going to see better VR solutions at a lower price point.

People like to think of 3D as a failed gimmick. Yet 3D movies are the mainstay of theaters. Beside all of that, ultimately VR is just a stepping stone to affordable holographic technology.

@cleft5

I do have a 55" 3D HDTV and I have viewed 3D movies which depending on your likes can really add to the enjoyment.

I have noticed that where I live 3D versions of the same content are usually 10% to 20% dearer so unless the show is exceptional most buyers are just going to get the none 3D version.

Personally I am not that much of a fan of passive entertainment, preferring interactive games instead. I have even played 3D games and they can be quite impressive, however there are few 3D games that interest me.

VR does offer a more interesting and immersive way to play games and even view movies.

Most people think that a VR head-set is just for VR games however devices like the PSVR can be used to play normal games and even watch movies. Just the ability of having cinema mode with a virtual huge screen may actually be a very attractive to the consumer who does not really care for VR and even gaming but is a huge fan of movies.

Personally I have not tried the PSVR and have no intention of getting one until I have tried it not just for VR but for normal gaming and even watching a movie. Once I have tried those three different types of content I will then make a decision.

If it isn't a resounding success in its niche market, that want vr. then it could be considered a failure. Vr headsets however have other uses than gaming, so you never know. On aside note is the oculus Cv supposed to be that hot to burn the fog of the lense or is it a side-effect?

Anything with more than three syllables is doomed to fail.

More on topic.

If VR fails, then I guess we'll continue playing games the way we always have been....although many of us would continue to do that anyways.

yarbie10003701d ago

Then the rest of us just continue to game without having a tv screen strapped to our face...

rainslacker3701d ago

But VR's failure doesn't mean we can't still do that. PSVR can do cinema mode, and there are regular HMD's available.

I've often dreamed of playing games with stuff attached to my face. It's been my hope since seeing the first Alien movie long long ago.

Trilithon3701d ago

neck strain, eye strain, sweaty heads and faces probably a rash lol, broken personal items, nausea, and maybe, just maybe a good ole fashioned gaming experience.

rainslacker3701d ago

What if a meteorite the size of Texas crashes into the earth tomorrow?

SaveMeJebus3701d ago

It won't, Bruce Willis will save us.

rainslacker3701d ago

What if the Meteorite lands on Bruce Willis?

rainslacker3701d ago

If it doesn't, then I guess I'll have to go to work and make my car payment.:*(

SaveMeJebus3701d ago

Bruce Willis will land on the meterorite first, and Morgan Freeman will be President.

rainslacker3701d ago

So in other words I won't have to go to work in the morning or make my car payment?

DragonDDark3701d ago

You gotta do what you gotta do.

What has happened when anything has failed in the past? People will move on.

But what really do these articles serve to achieve? VR looks setup for great success over the next few years. VR is bigger than gaming, and even in the consumer entertainment industry it has many huge companies working together to ensure that it doesn't fail. VR, even with competing companies is a collaborative effort: https://twitter.com/VirtuaM...

YinYangGaming3701d ago

Sony are investing a lot in VR so could prove troublesome for them plus Oculus and Vive are really high end so could prove to be very niche and not sell very much

Fin_The_Human3701d ago

Has Sony done like a one year experiment Beta test with PSVR?

I am just asking cause I want to know of having a screen strapped like Inches away from your face has any side effects... Like eye strain or of the any type of electrical waves omitting from the VR can give you a tumor.

Just curious if anyone has been testing this for some time.

nitus103700d ago (Edited 3700d ago )

While the comments you made are very valid it really is up to you to try VR mode as well as cinema mode for movies and standard games. Once you have done that only then can you make a decision. Remember that a VR headset is a personal display device.

Of course you can take the chance and pre-order but I personally don't think that is a good idea although I do think the first shipments are going to be sold out.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2141d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
