Microsoft Employee Working on "Xbox neXt," a Potential 4K Xbox One

OMG ...megaton incoming at E3!

Many people have thought since MS is merging the Xbox brand with their Windows PC that this will be their last console. Apparently there is another Xbox Next console coming.

This give more evidence that MS is going forward with their plan of releasing Xbox upgraded consoles on a more consistent basis that is Forward/backward compatible. I for one is excited by it just like I am for the rumor PS4.5...Can't wait!!!

Eonjay3710d ago

Well, it can't be a 4k Xbox One because Phil said like two day ago no to upgraded Xbox One. Also, its too soon for next gen. But its still more likely that this means that Microsoft is working on a new console that we could see sometime around 2018 or 2019. The same could be true about the PS4.5 (really being a prototype of PS5).

naruga3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

damn it started..and probably the change to the new-systems will be dictated sooner or later ..shame and just now i was starting to feel comfortably in the current gen with the plethora of games which are being prepared

Kingthrash3603710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

Lol its like **** what Phil said...it only matters if it's only what we want to hear.
Just like dx12....he said it wouldn't make much a difference. Some how it was still a subject ...and like he said it hasn't made a difference.
It's just for dem clicks..
xbox next was one of what people were saying the xb1 wad gunna be called...smh

3710d ago
Kingthrash3603710d ago

Soo...like all the negative ps4.5 is too soon and bad for gamers will start to flow to xbox next now?
Or is this suddenly good news?

Eonjay3710d ago

@Kingthrash360

its not news at all. Its just a rumor.

ZiggyStarnuts3710d ago

He didn't say no to Xbox 1.5, but rather to a new console that wasn't much of an improvement over its predecessor. It could just mean that he believes the Xbox neXt or whatever is a significant upgrade over the Xbox One, but still supports the same library of games.

arugula3710d ago

Well, AMD is coming out with the new external GPU. Xconnect.

Maybe that will be made to support consoles as well. Thats the only way I could possibly see them upgrading both consoles easily.

TheCommentator3710d ago

MS already said, a while ago, that there will be another Xbox. Typically, the design process for the next generation starts as soon as the newest version ships so this is not surprising news. Several years into the design process, I would figure that there are pretty solid plans about key features like resolution and intended release date.

The reality is that this "news" hardly confirms that an XB1.5 is in the works. Because it's potentially a 4k machine, which would be really expensive right now, it's more likely he is working on XB2.

donthate3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

So I wonder if big numbers means triple the performance?

I mean the Xbox One is around 1.2 TF, and Eurogamer speculated that a doubling of PS4 which is around 1.8 TF is possible, that means more than triple the performance of current Xbox One is possible in the near future. That is quite significant for a console.

This is in reference to Phil Spencer saying:

"If I’m going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers."

bleedsoe9mm3710d ago

whats the difference between a forward and back compatiable xboxnext and a xbox 1.5 . its all semantics and a name change used for marketing from here on out .

MachuchalBrotha3163710d ago

@kingtrash, its good news for me. I have no problems with this. I would like a new Xbox Next and PS4K.

Rookie_Monster3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

@Kingthrash360
"Soo...like all the negative ps4.5 is too soon and bad for gamers will start to flow to xbox next now?
Or is this suddenly good news?"

Don't know about anyone else but I've been saying both a Ps.4 and Xb1.5 is good for gamers as it offer them more options. So I have remain consistence regardless of which side.

And regarding your comment of if XB1.5 negative news will start flowing in like those PS4.5 rumor, LOL where have you been? The XB1.5 rumor had already came out from the Windows 10 event in Feb before the PS4.5 rumors and trust me, multiple negative articles has already been posted of how a XBOX 1.5 is 'a betrayal and slap to the face of gamers' ...etc.

LOL

343_Guilty_Spark3710d ago

Hmm that's not what he said. He said he isn't interested in modest .5 revisions. If they are going to do it needs to be a jump. The next Xbox could very well be called Xbox One and have double to quadruple or more performance than the current Xbox One.

creeping judas3710d ago

@kingtrash "Soo...like all the negative ps4.5 is too soon and bad for gamers will start to flow to xbox next now?"

I don't know what negativity you are talking about, all I read was excitement and a general acceptance in the story about the PS4.5K? Oh I'm sure there was a fanboy or two, sprouting the usual fanboy nonsense, but the general consensus was one of happy acceptance.

Kingthrash3603710d ago

Let me be clear.....I have no problems with both of these consoles doing an upgrade. ..I was referring to the numerous articles about how the os4.5 is bad new ...with comments saying the sane....I know not all are not liking it...but speaking in truth there have been many more negative articles about ps4.5 that positive ones..also I know they are rumors... even the nx controller is a rumor but it's just a question. Mainly because phil can't say or do anything wrong ..even when he disagrees. Or the xbox too...in the past it got reckt because of the bs they tried to pull...but now it gets away with many many things that not even Nintendo gets away with..let uncharted had been 720p and it would have been put on the fryer, qb...oh its no biggie...lol just wondering what else will be no biggie.

NewMonday3710d ago

if true it will be a race to the market

whoever hits the right balance of price+power will win this round

Sony should go for the strong CPU even if the price is $500

meche3343710d ago

Its not Xbox one its Xbox next

ProjectVulcan3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

I believe we will have a much shorter console generation than the previous. I said it when these machines arrived in 2013, looking slightly underpowered compared to what had gone before.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we have an entirely new generation of machines sometime around the end of 2018, which would make the current generation 5 years old.

In order to have consoles that might be capable of delivering the current standard of visuals in a 4K resolution (for example) then you would need 4 times the performance of the present machines.

If you wanted to add much better visuals on top of pure resolution increases, then you need even more than this. Lets call it 8-10 times more performance for a new generation over PS4.

This should be achievable in a console box before 2019. We already easily have four times the single GPU performance of PS4 in cards like the R9 Fury. The Fury X and Titan X are even greater.

Those top cards will be superseded within months by even more powerful cards due out this year, a new generation. They will likely be a minimum of 6 times the performance of PS4's GPU. Greater than 11 teraflops.

DevilOgreFish3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

Interesting news, but this is not really good news in the interests of late buyers 2 years later into the gen. when every 3 years gamers are going to be trading-in their consoles for higher standards. if the consoles move into this direction they would be more like "disposeaboxes".

And not to mention the total costs from upgrading consoles. It will be almost the same as investing in a good gaming PC. And there's the benefit of keeping your library of games on PC while you upgrade.

this is a new direction for the consoles, if this all true. it doesn't sound good though imo.

indysurfn3710d ago

He is an executive so take his word literally ONLY! He did not say no new xbox one that is more powerful. It may be a stand alone meaning. It technically is not an upgraded xbox one!

Just like if I go buy a more powerful computer. It does not mean I upgraded my computer. Now if I bought a better graphics card and install it. THAT would be an upgade!

bouzebbal3710d ago

xbox also said NO plans to change from the always online policy. The specialists of U turns it's xbox after all.

I see the PS4K as a premium PS4 with
-Full backward compatibility with PS3
-slimmer design
-More processing power for VR allowing a better refresh rate or a more stable performance (a bit like 3DS and new 3DS with more stable 3D thanks to the extra power).
-4K output

I wouldn't say no to this one, honestly.

Xbox Next sounds like a new generation of Xbox rather then an upgrade to the current Xbox One and I remember Phil saying this.

Phil spencer - “If I’m going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers.”

Could MS go the way of Nintendo and release a brand new console next year? A console with forward and backward compatibility with Xbx 360, Xbox one and maybe OG Xbox? Anyways I hope they play their cards right this time and correct all the mistakes they made with Xbox One also I'm hoping we get some major announcements at E3 i.e an open world western type rpg maybe a halo open world rpg focused on the convenant race. I'd like that or maybe Lost Odyseey 2.

https://twitter.com/XboxP3/...

vega2753710d ago

I would buy a Xbox next as long as the add BC with X1, X360 and OG Xbox.
I just want my games to play on the new system.

UnHoly_One3710d ago

The only "mistake" with the Xbox One that hasn't already been corrected is the weaker hardware itself.

Otherwise they have listened to everyone and changed everything that people didn't like at launch. Unless I'm forgetting something.

kraenk123710d ago

Well I guess they just started working on it but they sure will invent some new fairy tales at E3, after all this DX12 and The Cloud talk of the past.

XanderZane3710d ago

I'm sure if then do create a XBox Next, I'm sure they will include a CPU/GPU that fully supports DX12 and every game made for the system will use it properly. Really only 2 games have fully support DX12 on XB1. One was cancelled and the other game doesn't come out until the end of the year.

Deadpooled3710d ago

Hope the xbox one now gets the same sales restriction treatment the ps4 received due to the ps4k rumours, not counting on it though.

gangsta_red3710d ago

Well there's no secret that companies are already working on the next console soon after their current one has released. I think this could mean that and not necessarily an actual reveal at this years E3.

I don't know how I feel about companies releasing consoles this quickly. Especially when games have been sparse and lackluster so far. I mean it's the reason I held off on Wii U, because I knew a NX was around the corner. I would do the same for PS4.5 and Xbox 1.5.

3-4-53710d ago

* I hope all of you realize that Nintendo,Sony& Microsoft are ALWAYS working on their next console.

The day after the Wii U launched, Nintendo got to work on the NX.

Sony & Microsoft are the same. They start R&D for their next console. It's not something you do in 1-2 years...it takes a while.

rainslacker3710d ago

More likely it's for the actual next console, which won't likely get announced for another 2-3 years. I doubt they're going to announce anything at E3, as that would just piss a lot of people off that have already invested in X1...and stall sales. Same thing it would do for Sony if they announce a PS4K.

Free_Fro3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

Once again..

More speculation...

-
I'm more interested in shredding the fat on the current system and dropping the gloss finish in exchange for a matte black finish.

-
xo

Ripsta7th3710d ago

the more recent consoles have the matte black finish on the left side
the fan side is still shiny

Lennoxb633710d ago

I just want a red Xbox One. *sigh

BuildTheWall3710d ago

Want a red Xbox One? Buy yourself some red paint or redtape electrical tape & you'll have a red Xbox One.

UnHoly_One3710d ago

You're more concerned with how the console looks than what's inside the box?

That seems odd. You'll hardly look at the actual box once it is installed, but you'll see the pros and cons of the hardware every time you're using it.

Free_Fro3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

yes, it seems odd..

In terms of mobility. A slimmer lighter box would be nice. One I can easily throw into a backpack.

gloss is prone to scratches and that bothers me, yes..

-
I'm already happy with how quiet and cool it runs, they nailed that... but there's too much bulk going on.

-
For me, when im using a console i hardly see performance flaws.. I haven't got eyes for Res or frame dips..
those are the least of my thoughts so long as the game is playable.
-

DragonDDark3710d ago

Another rumour... now articles will be making them facts just like PS4.5 or PS4K.

spicelicka3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

I hope this is true, but nowhere does it say anything about 4k, it's a big reach digging into something Phil said in general about 4k on PC.

Rookie_Monster3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

Just like the PS4.5 rumor, 4k is strickly going to be used for video as it will cost an arm and a leg to get gaming at 4k at this point. I think internal upgrade to make the GPU 2-3x more powerful so future games can perform similar to PC at almost max settings is what will be offer on the PS4.5 and Xbox neXt.

bleedsoe9mm3710d ago

which console upscales 4k less the ps4k or the xboxnext

AizenSosuke3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

4K Xbox ONE sigh and Phil said we didn't need one and not a fan of Xbox 1.5 sigh... (This is just silly for both companies to do).

@HVD

Agreed but I'm not a fan of Xbox 1.5 or PS4.5 just not a fan of a sudden new more powerful consoles.

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio33d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing33d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9233d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit33d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing33d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9233d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay35d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn235d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn235d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown35d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay35d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay35d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac34d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger35d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300035d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde35d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde35d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_34d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
