How Could a Possible PS4.5 Affect the NX?

— Nintendo Enthusiast:

The gaming world is incredibly tumultuous right now. Since new hardware comes once every blue moon, it's always a big deal anytime a company announces that it will be bringing out a new device. The thing is, Sony hasn't said anything about major new hardware; however, just like Nintendo's enigmatic NX, there are enough rumors to cover the state of Texas.

Reports suggest that Sony will be bringing out an upgraded PlayStation 4 system later this year, presumably to better handle VR games.

Dubbed the 'PS4K/PS4.5', this alleged upgraded console will boast an even larger amount of power than its already decently endowed predecessor. Although Sony has yet to make any form of comment on the matter, it certainly is an intriguing topic to ponder on. What makes this situation even more interesting is that if this really is true, it could have a notable effect on the NX.

So PS4.5 is going to be an upgraded PS4 and my PS4 will not run PS4.5 games?!? It might as well be PS5.

Bahamut3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

It'll probably be just an upgraded version of the ps4 now. So everything would be made compatible with the PS4, but this newer model would handle them better. Their slim edition of this era, I suppose. But this time with perks.

There is no fragmentation if both systems run the exact same games, and there are no games made to exclusively take advantage of something the older system cannot do. As long as a PS4K didn't have ANY exclusive content (as in not available for PS4 also), I see no problem with it.

Bahamut3694d ago

@Thrustmaestro

It's all just assumptions and speculation at this point, but I wouldn't mind buying a newer model of the PS4 sometime in the future though, I've had the same one for about 3 years now... 2 years down the road, a faster model would sound appealing. To me at least. All the same games, but just with better graphics or performance? 4k support? I don't see the problem if the price is right and all the games stay the same on both models.

kraenk123694d ago

No, it will run the same games but downscaled versions of em.

fr0sty3694d ago

Yeah! Then I can play this new game at its MAXED settings!

*Optimized for another company's video card that you don't own.*

CRAP!!!

kneon3694d ago

But you have to upgrade your video card every two years anyway if you want to keep playing on max settings. So that will give you a chance to pick the other manufacturer.

Of course a few months later the manufacturer you used to use will come out with something even better, and the cycle continues.

TXIDarkAvenger3694d ago

Not much in terms of gaming...

A PS4 will not be playing games at 4K so don't expect that. It is an achievement to even get 60 fps at 1080p for consoles.

wakeNbake3694d ago

Just the GPU would cost at least as much as a PS4, not to mention it would require far more advanced cooling probably hydraulic, there's no way a 4k capable console would cost less than $800 with today's technology.

kraenk123694d ago

It will upscale the games not run them natively.

TXIDarkAvenger3694d ago

Wut?

You can already upscale to 4K with a PS4.

herbs3694d ago

There are rumors of NX consoles being able to supplement one another when in stand by and if that is the case power will become irrelevant when millions of consoles are working together in tandem.

kneon3694d ago

So the NX is going to use up your bandwidth so that someone else's game looks better? That's just "The power of the cloud", only less powerful and more costly for the customer.

Ck1x3694d ago

Well considering that AMD and many others are coming out with their own external gpu solutions. The patent that Nintendo filed is very reasonable as buying a physical unit is not really that hard to do or convey how it would work with the NX.

MegaRay3694d ago

Please, tell me you don't believe that...

Davi1233694d ago

Well... If its just in multiplayer. It could work. I think that is a great ideia too.

Ck1x3694d ago

It's not even just that, the patent you are speaking of would allow the NX to receive extra processing power through an external gpu. This where consoles need to go, not buying a whole new machine in 3yrs!

So how could one rumour affect another rumour that has a little more than a confirmation of its existence?

I don't know.

LET'S SPECULATE ON CLOUDS.

rainslacker3694d ago (Edited 3694d ago )

Because there are reports.

Yesh...it's in the article description.

I mean, we all know if there are reports that it must be true. Particularly when all the reports report different things. It's the nature of reporting. I mean...why report one rumor as 100% true, when you can report multiple different rumors all being 100% true. It's hit-driving 101 in pseudo-journalism school.

Oh, and it's on Gaf or something, and they're 100% trustworthy and have never once been wrong with a leak.

Oh, and apparently it's true because some forum goers believe it, and state how awesome it will be, thus verifying it's veracity and truthiness.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio15d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing15d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit15d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing15d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
