Share Play Vs. Backwards Compatibility: Which Is The Best Post Console Release Feature?

ThisGenGaming says "Share Play and Backwards Compatibility, both are pretty revolutionary advancements for consoles and they’re definitely not becoming old news. Share Play is one – if not the biggest – of Sony’s most popular features allowing users to seamlessly interact with friends and family meanwhile Backwards Compatibility a is feature most people would’ve expected from both Sony and Microsoft pre-release, however not only is this feature another fine addition to the Xbox One, it is potentially one of the greatest selling points, giving fans of the console more to talk about and play with. Both features were however post-release, which begs the question ‘Why weren’t these features implemented from the beginning?’."

Shareplay is pretty neat and one of the best features the ps4 has but the downside is that you really need good internet to use it. BC is pretty neat if your'e into playing your old games. Even though I'm not into playing my old games I would give it to BC simply because it's easier to obtain.

G20WLY3685d ago (Edited 3685d ago )

But with SharePlay you don't even have to own the games.
And my broadband is adequate, fortunately.
And I still have my last gen systems.

And...well, you get my point!

aconnellan3685d ago

And that's fair enough, but I would argue that not everyone can hold onto their last gen systems. Most people I know had to sell theirs to afford the upgrade.

t-hall7853684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

That and i dont want a bunch of consoles laying around consuming extra power as well. Shareplay is cool though. I had a friend watch me on bloodborne to help me get through some parts. Definitely a much welcomed feature.

Cohagen4203685d ago

5 mbps is really not that much. I shareplayed MLB 16 the show with a friend who then went out and bought it.

FullmetalRoyale3685d ago

To be fair, some providers max you out at five, and that's for their most expensive package. It's utterly ridiculous.

ThunderPulse3685d ago

Never used shareplay cause my Internet sucks.

TheGreatGamer3685d ago

Backwards Compatibility is easier and Microsoft have done a really good job at bringing big games to BC so I'll give BC the edge, though I enjoy share play from time to time!

AudioEppa3685d ago

Both. Or neither if you don't care about features.

aconnellan3685d ago

"Or neither if you don't care about features"

Who doesn't care about features though? I would class the ability to play games on a console as a 'feature', albeit the main feature.

I would also argue that whoever ignores both Share Play and Backwards Compatibility under the guise of "they're only stupid features, I just want to play games" is actually then denying themselves the option to play an even bigger library of games by doing so

Paytaa3685d ago

I think Share Play is definitely more innovative for obvious reasons but BC is awesome too.

Don't really understand why there's a comparison. It'd be great if both had both features.

nosferatuzodd3685d ago (Edited 3685d ago )

I concur BC is so ps2 Sony started the whole BC then move away from it they try something new and innovative i give to share play
one more thing how is BC revolutionary when Sony did that trick almost a decade and a half ago on the ps2
and now its revolutionary maybe 10 yrs from now the next Xbox will have share play and everyone will say wow MS is soo revolutionary lol please

Paytaa3685d ago

Well I mean you could also argue that since Sony made it standard, why did they abandon it?

I encourage companies to innovate so they impact the industry as a whole and I think Share Play is just that. Who would have thought someone can play a friends game but not physically having the game? It's really cool.

Share Play is more of an innovative idea while BC is an added bonus that adds value but isn't necessarily required.

Aloy-Boyfriend3685d ago

I don't blame them for abandoning it.

People complained about the Price of the PS3 and went with the cheaper aternative.

I blame everyone for that and these underpowered consoles we have today. Then with our current consoles and the with the rumored PS4k and Xbox upgradabe we will end up paying what we could have payed day one and have been stuck for an entire generation.

Bigpappy3685d ago

do you really believe Sony started BC?

Zeref3685d ago (Edited 3685d ago )

Its not revolutionary it's just an awesome feature yo have.

Nivekki3685d ago

'I concur BC is so ps2 Sony started the whole BC'

I think that was actually Atari, back in the 80's.

Easily shareplay. I have a 100 mbps connection and am hard pressed to find streamers that say BC would be better. I've tried many ps4 games online multiplayer before I bought them. It's also fun to use with games like jamestown, helldivers, broforce, etc. Sony sent a survey a while back mentioning the possibility of allowing more users to connect to shareplay and that would be great. BC is eh, I still own my old consoles and games, so unless it's a remaster with achievements/trophies, it's not something I am really interested in. Especially with all of the games releasing this year, there really is no point in BC to people like me who bought a new console for new games.

aconnellan3685d ago

I wish I had 100 mbps... I only max 5 mbps :(

kaizokuspy3684d ago

5 mbps was the standard $30/mo in my city 13 years ago :( that hurts my heart knowing gamers have to suffer that hellish speed.

Tobsesan3685d ago

So you are telling us you dont like bc because you want to play new games. Meanwhile you praise shareplay but play games with it that are also playable on last gen... With bc you can play your old games and get alot of them for free with gwg and preorder. You dont have to keep your old console to play those games and prefer of the new features and controller + you can play online crossgen.

kaizokuspy3684d ago

No my preference is shareplay. Backwards compatability on gwg is a silly feature in comparison to shareplay. You cannot play bf4 with 64 players last gen at 60 fps. Bc does not allow that. Use your brain. Why would I want to preorder a brand new game to play a game I already own that's years old, that doesn't offer a new experience or incentive to play through again? You see that's solid marketing. It's built up as an amazing feature, but rarely gets used by the masses. I prefer to keep my old console because it is smart to not get rid of something the moment it's obsolete. You can claim lack of space as much as you want, but as a hobby, I don't thrown out my game collections simply bc I can get it digitally. Point in case, will marvel vs Capcom 2 ever be backwards compatible. No, as soon as it's taken off the server the game will not function. Which is why backwards compatability in large part is a waste and really only sells the consumer short. In 20 years, will your backwards compatability be there? More than likely not on a console. Which is why it's good to keep your physical purchases and not go full blown digital. Sure there are pros to it. Short term pros, but long time cons. Point is, I can play any of my friends new or old games without paying for them vs playing only old games I already own. It does nothing for me as an avid gamer. It's a marketing ploy that isn't translating into a huge market capture by MS. Eitherway, shareplay > BC unless every title ever made is true BC without any stutters or takeaways from gameplay, you're selling your old things and not getting the full experience. You were sold a lie bud.

Tobsesan3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

But you still need your friend to come online to play a game with worse performance, which is what you dont like about the last gen version.
I can see some of your points. But every Xbox 360 game has the servers still online, while on the playtation side alot of server are down (resistance, MAG, etc..) and even servers from this gen with the older MLB games. Will you shareplay be still up in 20 years?

PS4 Share Play: Why it died and how VR can bring it back

Share Play on the PS4 was a great idea that never took off thanks to technical limitations. With PSVR, Sony has a unique opportunity to do something amazing with Share Play 2.0.

Share Play didn't die, just needs a lot of work. Biggest issue is telling everyone they have either a poor or limited connection when a lot of the users are running 50+ Mbps Internet (I'm running 120 Down/ 30~ Up and it even says I'm on the poor end). I can download a 30 GB game off Steam in about an hour; yet PSN takes 90ish minutes minimum ,and that's with no one else online at the time, or even having a game running at all.

I use Share Play when it works, and it's a Godsend when it comes to seeing how certain games are, or to play something with local co-op (Double Dragon 4). The idea is there, and yes when it works it is a good feature; however it needs a ton of work to be effective.

It's another one of those blogs that use their opinion as fact. Shareplay is far from dead.

The feature didn't die it is still around

freshslicepizza3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

Do all PSVR games support it? Would be cool if all developers supported it.

Goldby3287d ago

some do, and to be honest it isn't the best feature for Share play with Vr, i have become sick as i watched a friend play through share play, i did experience some internet connection issues which may be part of the reason, but without the actual headset on, if the person showing off the Vr game doesn't remind himself that hes showcasing it, the jerky movements can cause some nauseating side effects

freshslicepizza3287d ago

That's true,VR works best if the experience is smooth in performance

It would be really amazing to do SharePlay at 60FPS. Luckily I have the bandwidth

Imp0ssibl34076d ago

Damn you! I'm stuck with a noob ISP for now...

PeaSFor4076d ago

great news and improved features, Foehammer be like "ARRGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!NOPE I AINT MAD!"

badz1494076d ago

Foehammer? you mean 100 vs 42?

Pixelart4076d ago

Cool..now all we need is some games that actually play at 60fps

masterfox4076d ago

Battlefield games
Call of Dutys games
Killzone shadowfall multiplayer
all freaking sport games
All freaking indie games are full HD at 60 fps
Resogun
Ultra Superstardust
like 80 % or more of all damn games on the PS4 are 60 fps, so don't know that the hell are you talking about with the some games comment ?

Or.. maybe... you are from the other side that are bunch of haters in denial ? .... nah I don't think so, haters, fanboys is such a minority :D right.. right... ? ooooh wait....

uth114075d ago

Because some high-profile games are 30fps, some people believe that most PS4 games struggle to hit 60 and 1080p I guess.

Alexious4076d ago

Me too! Hopefully Remote Play will be extended to 60 FPS soon as well.

Great, another interesting update, so we hope that they continue.

JMaine5184076d ago

Nice! Love to seem them improving on great features!

Alexious4076d ago

They're putting a lot of work to try and catch up with Microsoft on this regard.

This is why competition is good.

Insomnia_844076d ago

More like MS was catching up to SonY and that's why the XBO has received way more updates than the PS4. The XBO has been an incomplete mess since launch!

Ricegum4076d ago

Sony are far and away leaders in terms of updates and new features. Microsoft are certainly playing catch up here.

Muzikguy4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Sony isn't trying g to catch up. That's just coming from people complaining about a lack of features. Yes, I do believe that the OS is lacking a bit, but the system itself is awesome! I'm sure it's MS that's trying to catch up. That's why they scrapped Kinect (pretty much), keep slashing their prices, and are pushing AR now (which ironically will make Kinect useless) I do like that share play is getting upgraded. Have yet to use it. Also would like offline support for trophies

Rimeskeem4076d ago

I didn't know the Xbox one had shareplay

LackTrue4K4076d ago

@Alexious,

when Microsoft is ever considered "competition" in games/sales...let us know.

uth114076d ago

Microsoft just made a bunch of noise about a new screenshot feature.

Screenshots!

And you say Sony is playing catch up :)

XBLSkull4076d ago

Coming from the console that missed out on an entire 8 year generation of cross game chat? My 360 has more features than my PS4...

CernaML4076d ago

^It also has more functional features than your Xbox One. :^)

badz1494076d ago

catch up? LOL when did MS introduced SharePlay?

Fatal-Aim4076d ago

What XBLSkull means is that he has a PS4 taped to his wall with a knife in it. Lmao!

ITS FINALLY HAPPENING!!!

Mostafeto4076d ago

That is the highlight of this update for me as I think 7t is gonna be so useful to many gamers

Muzikguy4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

I like that as well, can't wait!! It's going to spoil me I just know it

Edit: I'm thinking it only works in single player games? There's no way you'd pause online :) either way, I welcome this!!
