Virtual reality is exciting, but is it really the next evolutionary step in gaming?

No, it's already showing it a viable step forward in gaming. It's being adopted and manufactured by the biggest entertainment/media/gaming companies in the world. It already has the advertising muscles behind it. It already has a huge assorted lineup of games for each platform involved with games being shown to perform as advertised.

Most of all it's already showing that its use is not only relegated to just gaming, it has uses and potential that can and will transcend just gaming into other areas of entertainment and business.

Movies will get a lot more interesting in virtual reality. Experience videos. Netflix, YouTube, it'll kick off new entertainment.

stuna13698d ago

Exactly, VR is here to stay regardless of who likes it or not. And it'll only get better as the media grows and developers find new and imaginative ways of using it.

amiga-man3698d ago

All the evidence says VR will be around for a long time, big companies, tech, movies, developers etc are all eagerly looking at ways to use VR.

The potential is enormous, anyone thinking VR is going to disappear really isn't seeing whats happening.

Trilithon3698d ago

VR isn't going to go away, but it is still to early for it to really take off. The hardware/ bandwidth needs to catch up. people don't realize how much it takes to push quality through two cameras at a decent frame rate. most games are still struggling to pull off 1080p through one camera at 60fps. love how all of a sudden nobodies talking about 4k when that was being hyped up so much not to long ago.

Artemidorus3697d ago

I agree but many will be off to the toilet later on puking.

3D-TV was adopted and manufactured by the biggest entertainment/media/gaming companies in the world too. Why didn't that take off?

Could it be that there wasn't enough quality control in place? to keep things in check and ensure the content being released was actually worth of the 3D treatment.

Not saying VR goes down that same path but there really needs to be tighter restrictions on quality over quantity. If not then... ???

amiga-man3698d ago

3d didnt take off because the experience wasn't that great, VR is the exact opposite.

stuna13698d ago

I don't see how it didn't take off considering I'm typing this comment on my PS4 that's hooked up to Sony Bravia 3D tv with a Sony 7.1 Channel 3D audio receiver, not to mention a 3D BluRay player.

You may not invested in 3D or even your particular circle of friends, but as an example I have. Not to mention every TV manufacturer have their own exclusive line on 3D tv's and popular to what you may think they are selling, maybe not at the rate you think they should be selling in order for you to consider them a success.

This was no different from switching from analog to digital! It took years, so much so governments forced consumers to switch over because of overcrowded bandwidth.

Cable has 3D channels now, PC's have 3D monitors, hell right now there are 4K 3D TV's, Samsung just released a 4K 3D BluRay player, but yet 3D is dead!? Sorry to say far from it! Especially with most movies releasing with a 3D version alongside the standard version.

Yourmommasaid3697d ago

Let's just say VR is the natural evolution of 3D. In fact, instead of having a display a couple of feet away from you, it's right in front of your eyes.

Jag-T10003697d ago

3d movies suck. Once in a while they will throw a rock or something at you. Everybody goes "WOW" "awesome, did you see that rock?" That's your 3D experience.

* Dispatches = doom and gloom click bait website.

I'm not buying into VR right now but I know eventually it will be awesome.

Stop clicking on dispatches site.

They lie and have no shame in doing so.

Stop falling for it.

Anyone disagreeing with you is shortsighted and has no idea what they're talking about. VR isn't the wii or the kinect, it's not a gimmick and it's here to stay. This is just the tip of the iceberg and it's only going to get bigger. Years from now the naysayers will all be using it. Well, aside from technophobes..

As I've always said, gamers have always been looking for immersion in their games. We have from a 2D Mario platformer to a 3D plastformer, from a closed in environment games to sandbox games. VR will be a big part of gaming, there is no doubt about that, but will it take off like wildfire at the start? I personally think it will be a slower process to introduce VR to the masses. With cost being the big inhibitor at the very beginning.

stanr3698d ago

I'm on the fence about VR, I would love to play Metal Gear Solid and GTA V in VR. However I'm also concern that it may just be a fad like motion controls because gamers are just gonna go back to playing the old fashion way.

BlackTar1873698d ago

Here's the thing though VR headsets would also help with the traditional sit on the couch gamer as well. Bigger screen turning your head isn't that much different using a regular controller.

Der_Kommandant3698d ago (Edited 3698d ago )

Oh boy...here we go...

VR is DOOMED!!!!!!!

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2131d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
