Making Sense of PS4k and Xbox One-Two

New consoles are apparently incoming from Sony and Microsoft, and GameOnDaily attempt to explain why.

Can't wait to get myself a PS-whatever it'll be called.

The new Xbox might be redundant to me because the way Microsoft are aligning xbox and PC gaming, but i'm still glad to see advances there too.

To think there was an article about E3 getting smaller recently. There may be less publishers putting on shows, but this E3 will surely be huge as far as announcements go.

Gazondaily3583d ago

That's actually a good point. Price point for these new upgraded consoles. How will they approach it?

MS aligning themselves with PC more will surely hurt their efforts here wouldn't it?

dreadz743583d ago

How closed box console always yield more than PC counterpart. The could release a 4k gaming sytem for 500-600 which is still way cheaper than PC. I have an awesome rig but it cost around $1000.

bleedsoe9mm3583d ago (Edited 3583d ago )

i'm the opposite i'll pick up the xb1.5 quick because i like the controller and live service better . i'm considering dumping my ps+ because the games really aren't up to the offerings live is doing , i'll still be able to play all the ps4 exclusives on my og ps4 . i guess this is assuming there isn't some advantage that doesn't appear .

@Volkama you got me i'll probably just buy both

Volkama3583d ago

I'll be sure to think of you when I'm playing various Activision game map packs 1 month early.

POW didn't expect that trump card, did you?

madworld3583d ago

WOOW I'm really opened to new PS4.5 and I wish Sony Produces An extract APU device(CPU&GPU)can anyPS4 old owner hooked up with it,GUYS like the laptops when we attached & hooked up with extract GPU I really hope for Upgradable Consoles Like Google's Project Ara..IF I have to decide No need to think A lot Man JUST DO IT!!

Gazondaily3583d ago (Edited 3583d ago )

"Sony set their strategy in place years ago, timing is a very important aspect and reacting to Microsoft was not on the agenda. "

If this all comes to fruition and I see no reason why it should, this point will make a massive difference. MS will no doubt be aware of this and whilst they were the first to publicly give hints of this kind of upgrade, they will be a lot more reactionary now, watching Sony with a laser focus.

They cannot afford to be one-upped again and I feel that they will use this chance to try and claw back their lost ground.

kenmid3583d ago

I thought Microsoft was first to hint of a upgrade console before the Sony rumors came out.

TheCommentator3583d ago

They were, and that's what Septic said.

indysurfn3583d ago

Yep that's exactly what he said.

rainslacker3583d ago (Edited 3583d ago )

I kind of agree overall, however, I dunno if trying to one up the competitor on what is likely going to be a very decisive concept is the way to go. This would be particularly true if one competitor isn't exactly sure what their competition is going to do.

They'd be better off one upping Sony on something more substantial and likely to actually be readily accepted...such as more games for instance.

The concept itself should be approached very carefully and tactfully from any party that wishes to do a upgrade cycle of this sort. It needs to be explained properly, implemented rationally, and the final product needs to deliver on it's promises and insure that the end consumer benefits from the transition across the board(old and new adopters together). Rushing anything, or reacting to competition is just going to cause confusion, and the whole concept(possibly from both companies) to fail across the board, which is only going to be bad for both the companies and the consumer.

Gazondaily3582d ago

Agreed. It has to be handled with care and there can be no mixed messaging like there was with the X1.

magiciandude3583d ago

I am just going to upgrade my PC. Not buying another PS4 or Xbox One because of upgraded specs. This gen doesn't have many top notch games and already we're talking about console upgrades.

Gazondaily3583d ago

What about console exclusive games. Can you live without them, namely, Sony's titles?

magiciandude3583d ago

Yeah, I easily can. There is way more to gaming out there than Sony's exclusives.

Rookie_Monster3583d ago

I can't live without it as shown by my Pre ordering of Uncharted 4 way back in last August http://i1376.photobucket.co...

I would sell my kidney for a PS4.5 if it meant that I can play it like the initial trailer where it looks scary real and with 1080p and 60fps.

SolidStoner3583d ago

no one can replace Gran turismo.. its a system seller alone!

Rookie_Monster3583d ago (Edited 3583d ago )

Of course it make sense. During the long X360/PS3 era, it was already painful enough when console AAA games like Red Dead Redemption, Gears of War and Uncharted never get a chance to show what they were capable of.

At the beginning of this generation, many thought that these supposed next gen consoles will be godlike and all games will be 1080p and many also 60fps as well due to claims that they are 10x more powerful than their predecessors. I even heard an Sony executive stated "Give me 1080p and 60fps or give me death as you will see most games at that level on PS4". But it turns out that both current gen consoles are not even close to the initial promises.

Also, do you guys remember the initial trailer for Uncharted 4 where it looks like best graphics ever made at 1080p and 60fps and the people here on N4g and Neogaf went crazy and thought this is going to happen on next gen and is going to be the standard. Fast forward, and many games like Uncharted 4, the Division, to Watchdog all have scaled back to mortal level simply because the current consoles just can't handle it.

Now, with both consoles are using the x86 architecture similar to PC and porting and scaling to meet specs requirement should be a lot easier than the previous generation, there is not a better time for periodical or even just one upgraded model each for the current consoles in a generation, respectively. That way power hungry warriors like myself that want to play TLOU 2 at locked 60fps and 1080p on both Campaign and MP online mode and able to play Halo at full 1080p at no Dynamic resolution where many people didn't quite enjoy and wish it was full 1080p and locked 60fps at all time, can do so while those that are happy with the performance of the current PS4/XB1 can continue to play on as well.

As long as the games are forward /backward compatible and all versions can be crossplay, cross saves on a PS4 and a PS4.5, for example, there is nothing wrong with having another option at a higher price for those that want it along with the current models.

It will not only have the potential to attract more gamers to the total install base of a console brand due to many current PC owners that don't care about the inferiority of console gaming in the past, will see a console only game like Red Dead Redemption 2 running on a XB1.5 that is similar to their maxed out PC and is willing to add it to their gaming arsenal knowing future console only games will be of the same quality as their PC rig.

Secondly, for those that are fearful that new games that will be made in the future that take advantage of the the newer, better hardware will somehow make the current console models obsolete, there is a solution to that. In 6 more years when the PS5 and Xbox Two are released, the whole cycle repeats itself. The PS4.5 and XB1.5 will have dropped in price and will become the new affordable lower entry price system while new games that are written for the next gen consoles will be forward/backward compatible. Just like iphones 1, the current PS4/XB1 will be obsolete as most people should be migrating to next gen NY then and the PS4.5/XB1.5 will be the entry systems for next gen gaming. That is a full 9 years of great gaming with the current XB1 and PS4. All the PS4.5 and XB1.5 does is a bridge for Sony and MS to make their next gen systems, ie.. PS5 and XB2, as powerful as they can even if it cost more than $400 initially because they already have those bridged-systems, ie..PS4.5 and XB1.5, in placed that are powerful enough to handle next gen graphics games at lower specs while making them more affordable for many consumers.

That is the way I want to see it going forward if consoles were to be relavent in the future as waiting 8-9 years for a gen is a dinosaur way of thinking and doesn't advance this hobby of ours forward.

LP-Eleven3583d ago

There was absolutely nothing painful about RDR, Gears, or Uncharted's output. In fact, they let us know EXACTLY what those machines were capable of.

OT: Still taking the wait and see approach, here.

Volkama3583d ago (Edited 3583d ago )

Look at TLOU, then look at TLOU remastered. TLOU was a technical masterpiece, but Remastered is the standard we should have been playing when the game released. And we would have been if gen 7 didn't outstay it's welcome. We didn't have the choice because it was a platform exclusive, but multiplatform games were already showing the huge gap.

The same is happening right now. Multiplat games look so much cleaner on current PC tech than they do on consoles. I'm with Rookie, I'd pay out to play the console exclusive at today's tech standards.

LP-Eleven3583d ago (Edited 3583d ago )

@ Vlk: Nope. The PS4 provided an experience the PS3 couldn't. And you know what, there's not only nothing wrong with that, but very much in tune with how generations go. That's like saying Mario Kart Double Dash is what Mario Kart 64 should have been, because the GameCube provided a, technically, better experience. Well, of courser it did, it was on a stronger machine.

The Last Of Us was given to us on the platform it was designed for and then "prettied up" on the stronger machine. Doesn't mean the previous release was "painful" to watch/play (can't believe anyone in their right mind would agree with that). It actually contradicts his view (and yours, since you decided to chime in and you're "with him" on this). The Last Of Us showed what the PS3 was capable of. Bottom line.

And, btw, multiplatform games have, for the most part, always looked cleaner on PC. So, that's nothing new.

Volkama3583d ago

Point being the hardware to run TLOU Remastered was commonplace when TLOU released, but we couldn't play it like that.

With the supposed frequent console updates we could have had it looking like that first time around.

These days i play most of my games in 4k. I would like to play the upcoming PS4 exclusives at that kind of quality, so i hope Sony do release a ps4.5 or whatever. Which is pretty much what Rookie said.

LP-Eleven3582d ago (Edited 3582d ago )

Wanting to play the games in 4K is actually not the same as just wanting them to be of better quality than what the PS3 and 360 offered. My gripe with what Rookie said stands. The games he mentioned, at no point, were painful experiences and actually showed what you can accomplish when you push closed platforms, like consoles, to their limits.

That's like saying what we have now are "painful' to watch when we know the PS5 and next Xbox will have better specs. That doesn't make sense to me.

Im down with it and just hope i can trade in my og ps4 for at least 150 and im golden. I havent bought an xbone yet but would definitely be eyeing a new version if it comes out.

If they finesse it where the same game is playable on both the ps4 og and ps4k just with added features and better rez and fps in ps4k then i don't see an issue at all. As long as they dont start making Ps4k only games to fragment community theyll do good.

RAM Price Increases Could See Next-Generation Console Releases Delayed

Insider Gaming has learned that the ongoing price increases in RAM due to the rise in AI could delay the next generation of console releases.

What is even the incentive of upgrading to the next-gen after this console generation we've had? Graphics are plateauing, prices at an all time high, studios skipping entire generations or simply releasing just one game for it...
Its a mess

Jin_Sakai17d ago

Been gaming all my life. This is the worst generation ever.

jznrpg17d ago

How do you gauge each generation? There has been a lot of really good games this gen. I only care about the games. First party hasn’t been the best but the generation isn’t over yet

DarXyde17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

jznrpg,

Thing is, every generation before this one has had something that defined console identity. Very little beyond bigger/more detailed games and performance modes are really there.

I feel the last generation that cared very much was gen 7; Capcom's darkest era, but I have to give them props for being really experimental at the time. We saw plenty of new games that still tried to do something new. Outside of Metaphor and Clair Obscur, this gen has been pretty forgettable if you ask me. I'm sure a lot of it is the corporatization of the industry and the creative talent has to keep making sequels and spiritual successors because the cost of development is out of control. But even then, plenty of these experiences are experiences we've had already. And the thing is. Switch 2 and PSVR2 could really be doing incredible things, but it's just not there. Xbox I just don't see the value or point anymore but that's just me.

anast17d ago

Why has is been the worst? I've been gaming all my life and this gen. has been one of the best.

Vits17d ago

Not to mention that just like this generation, the next one will also be shared between the current and next gen console at least for a couple of years. So the few titles that it will had, just like this one, will run on the console you already have.

franwex16d ago

We will be getting games on PS4, PS5, and PS6, haha.

Extermin8or3_16d ago

I think people have to remember the pandemic at start of this gen and how it effected game development. This next gen we will see the PS4 etc support dropped and truly see the full utilisation of SSD's improvements to ray and path tracing and the impact of AI upscaling etc will be where the biggest improvements will come from.

isarai_lee16d ago

My sentiments exactly, next gen has got to prove it's worth before i buy into it this time. This has been the weakest generation in my 30yrs of gaming. From the drawn out cross gen garbage, to so many games getting stuck in development hell or canceled, to the ABSURD levels of trend chasing to the point of self destruction, this gen just wasn't worth it

thorstein16d ago

I'm pretty sure I've already read a story that said Playstation is only halfway through this console's generation and that PS6 is a way off.

Im good with next gen being pushed back to 27/28. It feels like this gen has only just begun.

Melankolis17d ago

Covid-19 held back everything at least 2 years worth. Although many people disliked, i think only UE5 can generally distinguish this gen from the previous one.

DarXyde16d ago

UE5 is definitely impressive, but I would also give the nod to the current version of Decima, at least the way it looks for Death Stranding 2.

CornholioX17d ago

That's normal how you think. Time goes faster when you're older and i bought my PS5 since day 1 release and now it's 5 years old. I don't mind a year delay to release PS6 in holiday 2028.

DoubleYourDose17d ago

Tomorrow isn't promised to any of us.

Eonjay16d ago

I was under the impression that next gen wasn't coming till 2027.z u9gsq

Regardless of RAM price increases, I strongly believe there’s still a lot of potential left for the current gen. I’d be fine with at least 3 more years.

Whenever it comes out is fine with me. I still have backlog for the next year at least

Ah, excellent, we haven't had a proper "xbox is actually winning" article in a while.

Yes, Game Pass which hasn't seen any significant growth in 5+ years despite paying $100b to buy up two of the worlds largest publishers, and putting their service on every device that can run it but is selling half the consoles of the Nintendo Switch 1 is actually winning. And ignore the fact that apparently the last Game Pass price hike caused them to lose a third of their ultimate subscribers between people who quit the service or just downgraded likely contributing to the lowest CoD numbers in two generations.

The truth is of course Microsoft is just playing 5D chess so hard that everything that seems like failed decisions is actually just them winning so hard normal people can't see it.

25d ago
Eonjay24d ago

I think competition matters but the actually companies themselves are interchangeable. That is to say that the consumers are what matter. So even if Microsoft isn't in the console space its nice to see Valve get in there. Someone has to be there besides Sony. For their own good and for ours.

Gorik24d ago

"Someone has to be there besides Sony."

There always is competition, Nintendo, PC, Mobile, Streaming, and anything that takes time. The competition doesn't have to be a trillion dollar company that openly admits trying to spend the competition out of business by controlling the flow of software though buying publishers.

Microsoft's "competition" has had a negative effect on the gaming industry for the last 25 years.

S2Killinit20d ago

I agree with Gorik on this.

A competitive industry brings innovation and better products for the consumer... doofus

MrDead24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Wow, how many alt accounts did N4Gs resident jester make to spam this thread? That's a lot of accounts and downvotes from one person, you can tell it's all from the same guy as the article heat is still low even though the votes are high.

Impressive desperation.

Outside_ofthe_Box24d ago

😂

His act alone proves that the consoler "war" still matters and rages on for people like him.

The fact that he is puting that much effort to create new emails to make new accounts everyday is nothing short of mental illness. This site isn't even as active to be even going through the all that trouble.

TheColbertinator25d ago

Competition brings out innovation and ingenuity. Except of course if the competitors are greedy morons who couldn't build a decent videogame to save their lives with unlimited budgets.
