New consoles are apparently incoming from Sony and Microsoft, and GameOnDaily attempt to explain why.

Discover how Sony Interactive Entertainment, Nintendo, and Microsoft continue to collaborate to improve player safety across our platforms.

Insider Gaming has learned that the ongoing price increases in RAM due to the rise in AI could delay the next generation of console releases.
What is even the incentive of upgrading to the next-gen after this console generation we've had? Graphics are plateauing, prices at an all time high, studios skipping entire generations or simply releasing just one game for it...
Its a mess
Im good with next gen being pushed back to 27/28. It feels like this gen has only just begun.
Regardless of RAM price increases, I strongly believe there’s still a lot of potential left for the current gen. I’d be fine with at least 3 more years.
Whenever it comes out is fine with me. I still have backlog for the next year at least

Does the console war still matter? A look at Xbox’s strategy, PlayStation’s approach, and why gaming is no longer just about consoles.
Ah, excellent, we haven't had a proper "xbox is actually winning" article in a while.
Yes, Game Pass which hasn't seen any significant growth in 5+ years despite paying $100b to buy up two of the worlds largest publishers, and putting their service on every device that can run it but is selling half the consoles of the Nintendo Switch 1 is actually winning. And ignore the fact that apparently the last Game Pass price hike caused them to lose a third of their ultimate subscribers between people who quit the service or just downgraded likely contributing to the lowest CoD numbers in two generations.
The truth is of course Microsoft is just playing 5D chess so hard that everything that seems like failed decisions is actually just them winning so hard normal people can't see it.
A competitive industry brings innovation and better products for the consumer... doofus
Competition brings out innovation and ingenuity. Except of course if the competitors are greedy morons who couldn't build a decent videogame to save their lives with unlimited budgets.
Can't wait to get myself a PS-whatever it'll be called.
The new Xbox might be redundant to me because the way Microsoft are aligning xbox and PC gaming, but i'm still glad to see advances there too.
To think there was an article about E3 getting smaller recently. There may be less publishers putting on shows, but this E3 will surely be huge as far as announcements go.
"Sony set their strategy in place years ago, timing is a very important aspect and reacting to Microsoft was not on the agenda. "
If this all comes to fruition and I see no reason why it should, this point will make a massive difference. MS will no doubt be aware of this and whilst they were the first to publicly give hints of this kind of upgrade, they will be a lot more reactionary now, watching Sony with a laser focus.
They cannot afford to be one-upped again and I feel that they will use this chance to try and claw back their lost ground.
I am just going to upgrade my PC. Not buying another PS4 or Xbox One because of upgraded specs. This gen doesn't have many top notch games and already we're talking about console upgrades.
Of course it make sense. During the long X360/PS3 era, it was already painful enough when console AAA games like Red Dead Redemption, Gears of War and Uncharted never get a chance to show what they were capable of.
At the beginning of this generation, many thought that these supposed next gen consoles will be godlike and all games will be 1080p and many also 60fps as well due to claims that they are 10x more powerful than their predecessors. I even heard an Sony executive stated "Give me 1080p and 60fps or give me death as you will see most games at that level on PS4". But it turns out that both current gen consoles are not even close to the initial promises.
Also, do you guys remember the initial trailer for Uncharted 4 where it looks like best graphics ever made at 1080p and 60fps and the people here on N4g and Neogaf went crazy and thought this is going to happen on next gen and is going to be the standard. Fast forward, and many games like Uncharted 4, the Division, to Watchdog all have scaled back to mortal level simply because the current consoles just can't handle it.
Now, with both consoles are using the x86 architecture similar to PC and porting and scaling to meet specs requirement should be a lot easier than the previous generation, there is not a better time for periodical or even just one upgraded model each for the current consoles in a generation, respectively. That way power hungry warriors like myself that want to play TLOU 2 at locked 60fps and 1080p on both Campaign and MP online mode and able to play Halo at full 1080p at no Dynamic resolution where many people didn't quite enjoy and wish it was full 1080p and locked 60fps at all time, can do so while those that are happy with the performance of the current PS4/XB1 can continue to play on as well.
As long as the games are forward /backward compatible and all versions can be crossplay, cross saves on a PS4 and a PS4.5, for example, there is nothing wrong with having another option at a higher price for those that want it along with the current models.
It will not only have the potential to attract more gamers to the total install base of a console brand due to many current PC owners that don't care about the inferiority of console gaming in the past, will see a console only game like Red Dead Redemption 2 running on a XB1.5 that is similar to their maxed out PC and is willing to add it to their gaming arsenal knowing future console only games will be of the same quality as their PC rig.
Secondly, for those that are fearful that new games that will be made in the future that take advantage of the the newer, better hardware will somehow make the current console models obsolete, there is a solution to that. In 6 more years when the PS5 and Xbox Two are released, the whole cycle repeats itself. The PS4.5 and XB1.5 will have dropped in price and will become the new affordable lower entry price system while new games that are written for the next gen consoles will be forward/backward compatible. Just like iphones 1, the current PS4/XB1 will be obsolete as most people should be migrating to next gen NY then and the PS4.5/XB1.5 will be the entry systems for next gen gaming. That is a full 9 years of great gaming with the current XB1 and PS4. All the PS4.5 and XB1.5 does is a bridge for Sony and MS to make their next gen systems, ie.. PS5 and XB2, as powerful as they can even if it cost more than $400 initially because they already have those bridged-systems, ie..PS4.5 and XB1.5, in placed that are powerful enough to handle next gen graphics games at lower specs while making them more affordable for many consumers.
That is the way I want to see it going forward if consoles were to be relavent in the future as waiting 8-9 years for a gen is a dinosaur way of thinking and doesn't advance this hobby of ours forward.
Im down with it and just hope i can trade in my og ps4 for at least 150 and im golden. I havent bought an xbone yet but would definitely be eyeing a new version if it comes out.
If they finesse it where the same game is playable on both the ps4 og and ps4k just with added features and better rez and fps in ps4k then i don't see an issue at all. As long as they dont start making Ps4k only games to fragment community theyll do good.
