Why "PS4K" Might End My Console Playing Days

The supposedly confirmed rumor that Sony will produce a more powerful PlayStation 4 console hasn’t gone over well, even with die-hard fans of the brand.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3711d ago

There's no such thing as a confirmed rumor. No one with any sense believes this is true. The only thing I do expect Sony to add to the PS4 is 4k Blu-Ray support. I don't expect to see a 4k gaming until the release of the next Playstation console.

NewMonday3710d ago

if a game disk can be played on both PS4 &
PS4K why not

SonyWarrior3710d ago

title should be why i might think this click bait will make me 5 dollars

ravens523710d ago

I don't get why not... Games that are released on ps3 and ps4 don't have the same graphics...so what would be the difference? They don't take away from each other.

Satou3710d ago

I don't think 4k gaming will even be the norm until PS6. I mean, AMD said their next console chips will be ready in 2018 and are 5 times more powerful. Moving to 4k would mean almost no power could be spent on better graphics. Staying at 1080p, and playing majority rules, will allow for the best graphics.

So I think PS5 will just be 1080p near perfection, and PS6 will be 4k and will come out once chips are available more than 5x the previous gen. Meaning PS5 will be another ~7 year generation. We've got nearly a decade until 4k gaming on consoles, which makes sense, because it will take -longer- than a decade for mass 4k adoption.

Now for the new model, I believe it will be a slim model with 4k video support, but I also believe it will be ~30-40% more powerful, so that 900p titles can be patched to 1080p, framerates will be locked at 30/60 fps, and for VR, 90 fps. No way they're going for 3-5x the power for 4k gaming, but mastering 1080p seems feasible.

Price would be around the same as a new console, so it could easily be traded in, and customers could easily save for the difference. I just hope it has SATA 3 so that those of us that want to upgrade with SSD can get max speeds.

donthate3710d ago

Yup, that is what I"m seeing too a 4K output with standard PS4 internals.

That said, it is hilarious how people are so scared of this change. Yet they are embracing it on their smart phone every day!

Why would you want to hold back console gaming to a bet of what our needs are made 5-years ago?

Instead of waiting for a 5-year cycle, and making another bet, let's upgrade. You can still use your console if you prefer or upgrade. It is healthier for the console gaming industry, because it allows us to stay side-by-side with mobile gaming innovation.

"Confirmed rumour" lol that's a new one to me xD

Yeah I agree, if anything it will be video playback in 4k not gaming.

1nsomniac3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

I don't understand what people are struggling with about the statement "confirmed rumour"?

It was a rumour that has been confirmed... Am I missing something?

EuroGamer has confirmed it with Sony.

Again, from what we've heard it is only blu-ray 4K support with additional colour & gamut options. So seems it'll be marketed more as a home cinema alternative rather than a gaming system upgrade. From what I gather which is pretty realistic assumption considering their history & background.

uth113710d ago

It's a rumor that's been confirmed by two news outlets by speaking to multiple developers.

So it probably means a prototype exists, but prototypes don't always become products

ninsigma3710d ago

It has not been confirmed because the company in question has not announced any such thing. I point to the nx controller "leak" That everyone ran with which was debunked and that has a physical leak. I couldn't care less what two outlets that have nothing to do with Sony have to say about confirming anything. This is still rumour until Sony announces it.
Not saying it's not real but come on, until a company officially says anything, it's rumour.

MasterCornholio3710d ago

@1

"EuroGamer has confirmed it with Sony."

Sony confirmed what now?

1nsomniac3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

The NX controller was some complete nobody releasing a picture of a clearly obvious fake as it wasn't functional in any respect. This has been confirmed by a Sony rep to EuroGamer. One of the biggest gaming media outlets in the world.

I think there's quite an obvious difference between the two.

Either way I agree nothing is official until officially released by Sony themselves publicaly but im happy enough to believe EuroGamer & the fact that Sony themselves have a history of pushing a console as a primary home cinema option instead of a gaming console. I don't think it's as big a deal as everyone's trying to make it out to be.

MasterCornholio3710d ago

@1n

"Either way I agree nothing is official until officially released by Sony themselves"

But you said Sony confirmed it with Eurogamer.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3710d ago

@1nsomniac
Eurogamer didn't confirm anything with Sony. Sony made only one comment and hasn't confirmed ANYTHING about this ridiculous story.

This is the only response that has come from Sony:

“We can’t comment on rumors or speculation”

Its a new level if information here since the article mentions a 'supposedly confirmed rumor'

medman3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

Yeah...I don't understand why some people cannot comprehend the simple fact that the most powerful graphics cards for pc's currently can't offer 4k@60fps, and are capable of 4k@30fps...if some of these people really think that Sony is going to produce a console capable for 4k gaming at a reasonable price, they're just out of touch with where 4k gaming is at the moment, and just how few people even have 4k monitors or televisions. I think 4k gaming for consoles is a long way away...Sony and Microsoft would be better served to lock down 1080p and 60fps first.

Lukejrl3710d ago

The 12gb titan says hi.

assdan3710d ago

Yeah. To make a pc that could do 4k 30fps would still run you over a thousand.

Niceman913710d ago

Wouldn't outputting in 4K require much more power inside the machine?

wsoutlaw873710d ago

Why is everyone over reacting so much to this. What ever it is wont effect my ps4 so I dont care. If it is worth it I will buy it, if not then I wont.

RIP_Cell3710d ago

I want one, people that don't want one keep using your ps4, nothings changed for you

Corpser3710d ago

If it's just a new blu ray player there will be no need to brief developers, multiple sources now confirming this, don't be in denial now lol

player9113710d ago

I agree here. The PS4 really isn't that better over the PS3. Games still run in lower res. Graphics seem slightly better but who cares, they dont look that different unless you side-by-side compare.

Making a 30-40% more powerful console mid term only alienates users who are already invested. The original console will always be the bottleneck as game developers need to encompass all PS4 specs. Least it would do is give a slightly better bump but doubt it. They are probably just reducing the chip size to the 14nm specs, making it slimmer, and adding in a 4k blueray player.

FamilyGuy3710d ago

I don't get why some of you are saying "4k blu-ray", do you not realize a 4k movie would take up waaaay more space than would fit on a blu-ray disc? I mean like 150Gb to 260Gb for a two hour movie.

The 4k support would be specifically for digital files in the media player and streaming from places like Netflix, Youtube etc.

There is no confirmation about this yet, so i'm not gonna jump the gun on this.
This is only a rumor!

Free_Fro3711d ago

insecurity is strong in the gaming community... at least online.

SamPao3710d ago

yeah. the whiners are out again

DigitalRaptor3711d ago (Edited 3711d ago )

Still a rumour, but it worries me a bit too.

It would be problematic if it causes fragmentation to the existing PS4 userbase. If we can still play the games on our PS4 but with enhanced settings and vice versa, then fine. If there are exclusive games made for an upgraded console, I'd hesitate before supporting that. I don't think Sony would want that though. Can't be too negative about a rumour though.

ritchi453710d ago

I'd imagine all gaming aspects, particularly online multiplayer, would be kept the same across the board. Any gains that could be gotten with the (rumoured) PS4K wouldn't be applied, otherwise it'd fragment the user base, which I doubt Sony would want.

3710d ago
OrangePowerz3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

Is it a rumour or is it confirmed? Once a rumour us confirmed it's a fact and not a rumour.

There was no confirnation for that anywhere besides of Eurogamer saying it's real and afterwards other outlets rolling with the same headline.

You can already forget about 4k gaming. Some small hardware upgrade doesn't make that possible when you look at the hardware needed to run 4k games with high settings and smooth. And that's for games that aren't even proper 4k games texture, models etc. wise. You are most likely looking at an upgrade to HDMI 2.0, 4k Blu Ray player, 4k Netflix/Amazon Prime and a smaller console.

I see too much potential for userbase fragmentation with a power upgrade and an additional unnecessary strain on studios. Even in the best case scenario that both run all games you either have to downgrade the MP to make it equal on both or disadvantage one of them. It's easy to see on PC that those with better hardware do have an advantage in MP over those with less good hardware. It might be a small advantage but it's still an advantage. Given that more and more games are going like nline that might not be something that would be good.

uth113710d ago

It seems that Sony has a prototype they've shown to devs. However that doesn't mean a product announcement is imminent. As many point out decent 4K gaming is too expensive to put into a console right now

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3710d ago (Edited 3710d ago )

There have been many "confirmed rumors" floating around gaming journalism in recent years. It's because many "gaming journalists" have no scruples.

See gamingbolt

Articuno763710d ago

There are rumours that a more powerful PS4 is in the works. This rumour has been independently corroborated by different outlets and sources (both Kotaku and Eurogamer).

In other words, it's definitely a thing (otherwise independent cross-corroboration would be impossible) which is where the 'confirmed' part comes from.

The thing is, we only know that such a system is in development (it might not actually make it out), not any of the particulars.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose25d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE25d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername24d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy25d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde24d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8624d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8624d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

pwnmaster300025d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle25d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
