Jolt Review: Space Siege

Jolt reports:

''I wonder if Space Siege had not been called so, it might have been a slightly better game. Gas Powered's follow-up to Dungeon Siege ought to be an entirely original experience: it breaks away from RPG conventions, favouring action and linearity. This is not just Dungeon Siege in space and it's not trying to be, except that here and there it is, and for no good reason other than a bit of name-dropping.

But the name is not the problem; the problem is the way the game plays. This futuristic shooter is crying out for an action game interface, yet has been lumbered with an RPG one instead. That the controls don't always work as you would expect and can't be remapped only rubs salt into the wound. Some games might get away with bending you to a new way of thinking, but sadly not Space Siege. The interface choices are never justified and the game itself is just not special enough to make such demands.

But such an introduction is intended to be cautionary rather than damning, because Space Siege is still an enjoyable romp through generic sci-fi paradise. What the game lacks in personality it makes up for in fiery explosions and ugly aliens that go squish. As one of the sole surviving passengers on one of the apparently few remaining ships to have survived a devastating attack on Earth, your task is essentially to do a room by room sweep, killing the on-board attackers whose numbers seem to be in the thousands.

I wasn't kidding when I said the game breaks away from RPG conventions, though, despite what the screenshots may show. In Space Siege, the loot and experience systems have been combined into one. Killing aliens, robots and zombified cyborgs, and opening crates results in a shower of spare parts, which can then be used to either construct grenades and health-packs, or (more usefully) upgrade your armour, health and attack capabilities. To supplement this, the game also awards skill points at scripted points during your travels.''

looks like they removed Prey, bought it for £1.35 i think but looks like they swapped it with Bioshock at £3.50, not bad :)

85% off was a total steal for Prey, 85% is pretty much a total steal for anything though, right? I mean, a big budget game with innovative plays on gravity, for the price of an iPhone noise maker app.

It's a shame they ran out of keys though, it's ridiculous that a digital distribution store can run out of keys. I guess 2K only authorised x thousands to be sold at that price, but you can't even buy Prey at full price anymore.

Steam is pushing ahead with fantastic sales, and the publishers just can't keep up. Here's to more great deals.

Steam has always had some sick deals every weekend, but this last week has been incredible. Just bought Bioshock and Burnout for a total of $12.50. I like the idea of not having to pay a sales tax either.

No, it won't.

But whatever your next machine is, will be able to run it. Bioshock won't get any cheaper, you may as well buy it now, your Steam account will follow you forever.

haqshot5992d ago

Thanks, I had a feeling it probably wouldn't, but I am planning on getting a new comp upon graduating college in May. I'll pick it up now and play it before getting Bioshock 2 later.
