SOMA - 6 Months Later

Thomas writes: "It is now a bit over 6 months since SOMA was released, so it feels like it's time for an update on how everything has gone so far.

The total number of sales, across all platforms, is currently at a bit over 250 000 units. This is pretty good; it'll only take 20k - 30k more until we've earned back our entire investment in the project. Given that the daily sales are still solid (about 125 units a day) and we have regular boosts from various sale events, this is bound to happen well before this year is over."

SOMA was a brillint game with a good story and great atmophere. I'd encourage anyone to buy it who hasnlt tried it.

Wanna hear something crazy? Bought it first day it came out this past September, for full price too I might add. Haven't played it yet! I love horror games but I need a cool-off period in between them. I finished outlast (finally) and whistleblower after buying it and was then totally drained. I'm thinking of diving into it this weekend. I also still have rapture to start / finish, ether one and this war of mine, walking dead season 2 and among the sleep to get through. Just comes down to time.... And it's far too finite for me now that I have a career, wife and child. Funny thing is, I'm doing fantastically well financially speaking, I can buy any game I want at any time. Yet the cost of that is my time spent working. As a manager 60+ is the norm. Which KILLS my gaming time management. Ugh

mogwaii3717d ago

You need to mark a few days out on your holidays for gaming and fully indulge, i dont work nearly as many hours as you and i just seem to not have a whole lot of interest in playing when i do have the time, could be because im older and been gaming since the atari 2600 but i do play, just not alot, i tend to keep up with gaming news more so than actual gaming, lol.
Maybe vr is the breath of fresh air i need.

RpgSama3718d ago

Yeah, totally agree, hope they recoup costs and make a profit, this title will sell for years when they start putting it in sales and bundles.

And after that they can always release it as a PS+ title for those that still don't have it (don't know what kind of financial incentive companies get for releasing their titles on Plus, but i'm sure it will only add to their earnings), and more people know about this wonderful developer and hopefully buy their next title Day One.

Neonridr3718d ago

Less eyeballs not having it release on Xbox One as well. Couldn't have been that hard to port over.

That being said, any PC/PS4 owners who haven't had a chance to try this game out I would recommend it. Especially if you enjoyed their previous titles.

Although not as scary, it has a very interesting story and a wicked atmosphere.

lipton1013718d ago

Easy to speculate as to the ease of porting, but if you're just an outside observer you're not giving them credit for the hard work in making the game to begin with. I'd imagine a cross console port is much harder than a simple copy / paste, despite the technical similarities. Not defending them, just food for thought from the other side of a coin

lipton1013718d ago

I'd say it comes down to cost / benefit and limited cash flow in relation to port spend vs marketing spend. Maybe they could have made more by reallocating their resources to a port, but that would limit marketing exposure, of which was already minimal. Again, straight devils advocate here. But as a manager myself, people are by far the most valuable and expensive pieces of a business. And marketing is astronomical. And because their product is one of digital retail, their controllables are limited vs a standard good or service where salespeople could be hired to market it directly. Their marketing will mostly be passive in the form of advertisements.

Neonridr3718d ago

@lipton101 - I am not discounting financial constraints here.. but it is only natural that when you limit your audience, you also limit your sales. Who knows, they could have made back the cost of the port in Xbox One sales. I don't pretend to know how much it costs to port over, but the architecture between the XB1 and PS4 are so similar now it's ridiculous.

I picked up this game day one, love Frictional as developers. It is a shame that they haven't seemed to make back their money as this limits their potential for future games unless they secure a publisher.

Not scary? This is the most nerve wrecking experience I've had in gaming aside from Outlast and I've been gaming since 1990.

Neonridr3718d ago

creepy yes. But far less scary than their previous effort, Amnesia.

I was more scared with Outlast than this. Although the few parts with enemies were definitely freaky here.

gangsta_red3718d ago

I agree, this should have been on as many platforms as possible.

DigitalRaptor3718d ago (Edited 3718d ago )

Easy to say "put it on more platforms", but who knows if Frictional had the resource to do so being an indie studio with lofty goals? Do you guys even know that Frictional are now working on 2 brand new games simultaneously which is eating into their resources more than ever? I wouldn't expect them to have the time or money to port this to Xbox One at current.

Get someone else to do it. https://artfulanxiety.files...

Aside from that, definitely one of the best games I've played this gen, and one of the best horror games I've EVER played, for not so expected reasons.

gangsta_red3717d ago

Given that there current game isn't doing as well as they expected they should make it a goal to expand whatever their next game they're working on to more platforms (including the Xbox One).

Hopefully they can find the time and the budget for their next game to be on all platforms. Maybe then they'll have a better chance or faster success than just being on one console, that pretty much didn't work out for them at all.

It's a shame sales fell flat. It's an amazingly atmospheric game. It really tripped me out that it starts off in Toronto. Not even an hour before starting the game I was at the same subway stop that the game opens up at.

Really set the mood for the rest of the psychological thriller aspects of the game.

Neonridr3718d ago

yeah, loved the Canadian setting to start the game.. ;)

Ragthorn3717d ago

Wait, it starts off in Toronto? WHAT SUBWAY STOP IS IT!? I might have to find out when I buy it because I have always wanted to play it.

Pandamobile3717d ago

St. Andrew I think it was.

Ragthorn3713d ago

@Pandamobile

I was just there today! Omg!!! Great lol. Thanks!

TheOneWhoIsTornApart3718d ago

This is a real shame. I always thought this game did well sales wise but I was wrong. this is one of my favorite games. It is an amazing science fiction horror contribution for gaming.

Zizi3718d ago

I guess it is because people love third-person horror games more. Moreover, there are less successful first-person horror games compared to what I've said in the first sentence.

Neonridr3718d ago

Amnesia, Frictional Games masterpiece.

Zizi3718d ago (Edited 3718d ago )

Still, successful horror games (in terms of sales and popularity) are the third-person ones. For instance, Silent Hill, Dead Space, Alan Wake, Until Dawn, Fatal Frame etc.

Neonridr3718d ago

Outlast, Alien Isolation, P.T.

First Person Horror games can be very successful if done correctly.

Not discounting 3rd person ones though.

mixelon3718d ago

An easier sell isn't the same as people liking something more.. I can't imagine Alien Isolation getting more sales had it been 3rd person.

And System Shock/bioshock series has as much of a horror slant as much of the successful 3rd person "horror" games.

SOMA, a Ten Year Reunion

WTMG's Leo Faria: "I wanted to keep this retro rewind brief as SOMA is something better experienced when you know very little about it. It might not be the best walking simulator I’ve ever played, but I was floored by its amazing story and premise. Jump into it with an open mind and little to no knowledge about. After a good eight hours, the story will be over, but that’s when you’re going to start philosophizing about its topics and themes. It might not be a brilliant game per se, but I also don’t think it would have been as effective as it was in any other medium. Give it a go, it’s totally worth your time, even after a decade."

I hated the actual game but loved the story, even 10 years later that ending still sticks with me and makes me think what is life and what is living.

jznrpg241d ago

I love games that have a story stick with me.

FinalFantasyFanatic241d ago

Me too, great story, but I did not enjoy that gameplay, really wish the gameplay had been better.

jznrpg241d ago

I’m not into run away and/or hide type games generally if not done very well either
