OXM: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Review

From the Article:
"With its non-branching storyline and no multiplayer, Force Unleashed is certainly less ambitious than the classic Jedi Knight games- and ultimately, its design makes it feel more videogame-y and less of an all-engrossing Star Wars experience than Xbox entries like Jedi Knight II or Jedi Academy. but when the game's on, its on, and Star Wars nuts will revel in those moments where you can be an unbridled, Force-fueled bully."

That seems about right, lightsaber seemed like a backup tool rather than his main weapon, and sure the game is based on force powers but I dont think they are all that fun to use. Very nice graphics though.

Based upon the demo, I thought it would have gotten a low 8. But yeah 7.5 does not seem too far off. HL2's grav gun was much better than the force grip.

Force pushing a door open can become very boring. It's essentially the same as pressing a button to open the door, only you're using the force to open a door now. This game doesn't do anything that you can't do in other games or that other games can't replicate. Force lightning? Yawn. Force Unleashed was supposed to be a physics marvel, intertwining two different physics engine at the same time to create spectacular explosions and such. But it was very underwhelming. Windows breaking, whoo...

As much as I love Star Wars the movies, the games don't usually live up to the movies, but what movie to video game game does?

I agree with ya. When the demo vids were out, they said all the environments would act accordingly. Metal would bend like metal, environments would get damaged so on and so forth. But this is no different than any other game out.All the enviroments consist of thus far are pre determined "blocks" for you too pick upand throw. I'm sure it will be fun , but it isn't what was promised. I'm sure the Indy game wont deliver either. I think seeing games come as far as they have and not really gotten much better, has made us gamers a little jaded. Playing the new bionic commando remake is all that more refreshing. No hype, just fun.

@Dino

Metal does bend!! Only when its on doors that you have to force push open though :P. I'm pretty disappointed with the environment myself, i expected this game to have a lot less static environment to what we're used to in most other games, seeing as how their tech demos showed alot of that off.

Another thing i noticed in the demo was the very quick disappearence of everything you destroy. Bodies almost disappear before they're dead. I find this quite annoying since i would love to see them fly all over the place when i jumped that next group of troopers with a massive force push.

Dino6490d ago

I know right!!! They make these promises as if we have the memory capacity of an f'n gerbil. I mean, just say ,"Hey we have a new Star Wars game coming out and it's gonna be fun!", cool , I'll get it. But being "Force" fed bullsh!t all my life from politicians to sales-people,I've had enough. You want our money ? Start keeping your promises. This is no different than any other business and as such should be held to the same standards. 60 dollars isn't cheap and if we aren't given what we want you can't have our money. Sorry for ranting i'm just fed up.

I really really didn't like the lock-on system, physics were on point though. This review seems like a fair score and about what i would give it.

Close_Second6491d ago

...looks like a rental for me at best now. I was not overly fussed with the game physics which seem to be a big part of the game.

Where is a next-gen version of KOTOR!!!!

Perjoss6491d ago

"Where is a next-gen version of KOTOR!!!!"

Amen to that, and please dont make it a damn MMO, we want a good story with an ending and a few epic moments, not a grind fest based in the starwars universe with tanks healers and raids /yawn

morganfell6490d ago

Well it is a rental now. I had it paid but that money will go over to something else. The demo was just horrible. The targeting system was iffy at best and that lightsaber resistant armor was a joke. No one should get struck in the body that many times with a lightsaber and not wind up looking like a refugee roast beef from the deli counter.

I really enjoyed the demo. I don't see the light-saber being a back-up tool as a bad thing. Tons of games have sword fighting (whether it glows or not doesn't matter) but not as many have the fun powers to play around with. I played it on the PS3 but I'm sure the games are identical. From what I can tell, I would get his game.

morganfell6490d ago

Two words...The Witcher. It has all of it in spades.

Ozzyb6490d ago

I actually wanted to play that game. But I'm pretty sure my PC (1.7ghz AMD, ~1024 ram and a semi-old graphics card) can't run it.

pwnsause6490d ago

i would of given it an 8 out of 10. its a good game, but it lacks something thats makes star wars games so good. cant wait till they make a next-gen Battlefront game though

x THE CHEETAH x6490d ago

I'm also looking forward to the next Battlefront... TFU's demo satisfies my Star Wars fix, however I think most gamers are patiently waiting for Battlefront III or the next KOTOR... or even another Jedi Academy. I guess for now, I'll settle for TFU and the upcoming Battlefront-esque version of Lord of the Rings.

I am not a Star Wars fan but I enjoyed the Force Unleashed and the sequel. Shadows of the Empire was another Star Wars game I also enjoyed.

RpgSama1067d ago

I had Shadows of the Empire on N64 and I used to finish that game basically weekly. LOVED that game.
