Xbox Is Actively Looking Into Digital Game Sharing Options

Console owners have to go through some trouble to share digital games with their friends. If the Xbox One has its way, that could change.

The statement : “We’re looking at both from a Windows standpoint – well, what’s our policy of the Windows Store? How many people can play concurrent? How do you share? We’re going to merge those two topologies soon so that a whole new model for how you share games across that will be in place. We’re actively working on that now to try to figure [it out], but we want to get to a much simpler model and potentially one that lets you do more… have a little bit more freedom in what you can and can’t do.”

jb2273716d ago

"but we want to get to a much simpler model and potentially one that lets you do more… have a little bit more freedom in what you can and can’t do."

Gotta appreciate that freedom to not be able to do things...I know I appreciate the freedom to be told what I can't do...just a very freeing feeling. Freedom.

ULTp0ltergeist3716d ago

Obviously there will be restrictions with such a feat given the potential reasons this can go very wrong.

mafia_pc3717d ago

It could be huge if we can also sell and trade digital games.

GigawattConduit3717d ago

Pretty sure they won't do that, if only because they don't want Gamestop to burn their offices down.

Gwynbleidd3717d ago

They pretty much wanted to do that from the start but made a 180 when the gen started. We could have had gamesharing and digital game sales from the get go but people didn't really understand what MS tried to do and MS has been to incompetent to deliver their message correctly. Hence the outcry at the beginning with the focus on "always online"...

freshslicepizza3716d ago

there were some actual great features buried in all of the controversy with the xbox one first unveiling . one was indeed digital sharing.

rainslacker3716d ago (Edited 3716d ago )

@Gwyn

People understood what they wanted to do. If they hadn't of attached the policies to the retail market, they would have been praised as being forward thinking because they could have actually implemented this with digital games, thus making digital a more attractive option to many. The other problem with the idea is that there were too many hands in the cookie jar so publishers could get back their cut on the game sale(or someone else could at least). It actually took money away from the consumer for what would likely be labelled as a service fee of some sort...but at least in the digital market it was better than the nothing that people can get now.

The game sharing thing I was always dubious on. It sounded great to be able to share with ten friends, their initial idea at the start, but Sony used to offer 5 shares with digital games, and publisher pressure eventually forced them to drop it back to two consoles. I can't imagine MS would have been able to get away with 10.

TheCommentator3716d ago

Gamestop's offices deserve to burn down. They treat their employees like slaves.

On topic though, I think that there should be a sort of digital rental service where you can download the games and delete them when you're done to return them. It would be better than a buy/sell/trade digital model IMO.

neoandrew3717d ago

In EU it is already possible, this is the law, EU court stated that...

As soon as the verdict came out, steam and the rest, changed their EULA adn rules from digital store, to digital renting.

Yes, buying on steam mean that you rent a game for lifetime, this is how it works to protect them from that court ruling and make impossible for a player to demand re-selling his game copy.

ONESHOTV23716d ago

you are doing the same thing and any company can send out an update that can destroy the software that runs your game don't think you are safe because you bought a physical copy.

neoandrew3715d ago

It doesn't matter on PC, almost all AAA titles are behind DRM, so you can't never resell them.

blackout3716d ago

I think that would be a MEGA HUGE.

ULTp0ltergeist3716d ago

I think that's a great idea, I always figured why GameStop themselves haven't done a digital market place for trade and sells. They better capitalize now before Sony and Microsoft implements their own sharing market.

"Console owners have to go through some trouble to share digital games with their friends." ps4 has shareplay which is pretty much straight forward. Pretty sure Microsoft can take ideas from that.

Thatguy-3103717d ago

Wow lol why all the dislikes? Did I say something wrong or out of topic? They easily can tackle it the same way the ps4 did.

Aenea3717d ago

As much as I love SharePlay, it's not the type of game sharing they are talking about here...

BossBattle3717d ago

How long at one time can you play using shareplay?

Thatguy-3103717d ago

1 hr. But I made it clear that they can take ideas from it not fully copy it.

Krakin13716d ago

There's no real limit to how long u can play as long as the host keeps letting u play.

Yetter3717d ago

Id say steam sharing is a better model

MattE3717d ago

Share play.. Lol, sorry mate but it's not the same as just sharing your library

nowitzki20043717d ago (Edited 3717d ago )

Shareplay is a start. Isnt it?

What do the other 2 consoles offer that competes with shareplay?

blackout3716d ago

I share my entire x1 library with my son. All of them no 1hr limit. My son plays all the game I have downloaded mind you once they start downloading for me digitally there put into his library. What is share play again?

nowitzki20043716d ago

@blackout

With shareplay a friend can play your games... Thru your console without ever downloading the game... But you knew what shareplay was, you are just being smarter than the rest of us.

Christopher3716d ago

@blackout: You're talking a sub account, which both Sony and MS use.

I think people are leaning more towards sharing a game with any friend at any time for any amount of time. While great in theory, if any publisher sees it as a way to reduce sales, especially DLC sales potential, they will prevent this from happening or impose a fee (which was part of the plan with Xbox One's original concept).

vallencer3716d ago

@Christopher

He isn't talking about a sub account. My brother and I do the same thing. Different xbox ones and different gamer tags. We share all the digital games and can play them at the same time. There is no substitute account. You can only do it with one person. What Microsoft is talking about is making it to where you can share with more people.

UnHoly_One3716d ago

You're basically comparing loaning a game disc to a friend for a couple weeks so that he can play a game on his own console at his leisure, to letting him play the game at your house for a couple hours.

It's not exactly the same thing.

Nobody is knocking shareplay, it's a super cool feature. It's just a totally DIFFERENT feature than what this article is talking about.

Microsoft always hypes their direction for Xbox, but they often fail. What happened to what they used to say about exclusive games being important? Isn't that why they buy studios? XD

RaidenBlack202d ago (Edited 202d ago )

MS buying Acti Blizz will be the pinacle of MS blunder.
Other previous blunders ~ they could've survived from that even after compounded.
But that sale from Kotick is what's ruining and what will ruin Xbox. (We lost so many interesting 1st/2nd party games, coz lack of funds after that 68Billion Call of Duty purchase).
Till even the Bethesda deal all seemed fine.

Reaper22_202d ago

Nah, the facts don't back up what you say. People have been saying what's gonna ruin xbox for years now. Sony far, it hasn't happened.

crazyCoconuts202d ago

The way I see it is a company that sucked at managing game studios went out and bought more game studios

RaidenBlack202d ago

@crazyCoconuts
they sorta were getting better at it, after Series X launch .... but then they got greedy after the BGS deal

peppeaccardo202d ago

MS Execs have lost touch with reality and they are living in an alternative universe where console and exclusives are no more .... i guess they got what they deserved as they were never in this business for the players but simply to satisfy the pleasures of the board !!!

S2Killinit201d ago

Literally, take everything that comes out of MS mouths and flip it to know the truth. Literally.

MetroidFREAK21202d ago

I mean I'll keep buying their games (as long as proper physicals are made) on Switch 2 and PS5

Jingsing202d ago

Well that isn't going to be a lot of games, I think most Xbox games are not on disc. That is by design.

MetroidFREAK21202d ago

I know. I have Gears Reloaded and will get Ninja Gaiden 4. Here's hoping the Halo campaign remake is on a proper disc

raWfodog202d ago

It's obvious to everyone except Xbox how important consoles and exclusivity is to innovation and driving the industry forward. Someone told me I'm taking her comments out of context but it seems Mike Ybarra also didn't get the memo.

stupidusername202d ago

Nintendo stayed true to their exclusives and innovated with Switch while Sony and Microsoft chased specs and branched out into live service games, subscription services and went multiplat with their biggest exclusives, either on steam or the opposing platform.
Xbox seem like a lost cause, Sony need to find their footing again after betting too many resources on cancelled live service games, while Nintendo seem to be striving.

It seems like a turning point in the industry. I'm interested to see what the landscape will look like in 5+ years.

Tariffs used by Xbox as "an excuse to continue raising prices", says former Blizzard president

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra has criticised Microsoft's recent price hike of Xbox consoles in the US, stating "console price increases are not tariff issues, they are profit issues".

237d ago
Eonjay237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

I mean... he would probably have more insight into the cost of Xbox than most.

If this is true, I think we can only be so surprised as Microsoft has been telegraphing their desire to ditch hardware for some time. It also comes off as profoundly greedy. They literally have more money than anyone.

237d ago
LoveSpuds236d ago

I am not an economist but from my basic understanding, profit issues and tariff issues are going to be closely related I would think.

Not suggesting MS won't milk the situation but I can't imagine any consumer electronics company wants to raise costs over time.

Perhaps Yabarra is running cover for that orange cretin?

Eonjay236d ago

No. He is implying that the first price increase was for the tariffs and the latest round is just using the tariffs as an excuse to jack up the price again.

Outside_ofthe_Box236d ago (Edited 236d ago )

"No. He is implying that the first price increase was for the tariffs and the latest round is just using the tariffs as an excuse to jack up the price again."

They are raising it because of tariffs. Raising it just because doesn't benefit them at all. Less people buy your system, you get bad press for raising it a second time, etc.

Price only went up in the US. It's Mr. "Freedom of Speech for only those I after with" 's fault.

236d ago
raWfodog236d ago

It makes absolutely no sense to me for Xbox to raise the prices on their hardware when it was already struggling to sell at their previous prices, tariffs or not. Or maybe I'm just viewing their hardware sales as 'poor' when compared to PS5 and Switch sales.

OptimusDK236d ago

That is not the point. If your cost goes up because of tariffs, note consoles are not exempt from tariffs, you can choose to sell at a loss or hike prices. It’s not that difficult. Ms can sell games beyond the consoles so they don’t have the same incentive as leg Sony. Thank TRUMP for this

raWfodog236d ago (Edited 236d ago )

Yeah, I know very well how tariffs work. My comment was that it makes no sense. Just stop selling the product if no one was buying it here in the US at the previous prices. Sales aren't going to get any better with this new price hike.

And Ybarra's point was that tariffs was the main reason for price hikes back in May but that is not the case now:
"In a later response, Ybarra added the previous price increase in May was justified due to the rise in tariffs at the time, but that's not the case with this new rise.

peppeaccardo236d ago

Greedy ?!?! Microsoft ??? ... no way !!! :P /S .... Horrible company

Reaper22_236d ago

He's not wrong how in the world can Xbox justify selling the series X for more than the ps5 pro

S2Killinit237d ago

Thats what I want to know too

DarXyde237d ago

You're paying for access to Gamepass, obviously!

But seriously, they're crazy.

236d ago
Green-Smurf236d ago

MS is an American company that manufactures in products in china. Sony manufactures the Playstation in Japan.

rlow1236d ago

Hate to burst your bubble but while you’re right about some consoles being made in Japan. They are also manufactured in china. Also a majority of the actual components are from more than one country.

Knightofelemia237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

It's to the point where a Series S costs just as much if not more then a base PS5 with out a disc drive.

Former Blizzard Boss Says Xbox Should Ditch Consoles To Focus on Becoming Leading Publisher

Mike Ybarra: "It's simple to me. Xbox should strive to be the world's largest publisher of entertainment content.

Get rid of everything else and get focused. Do not be afraid to say what you are. Embrace the lane."

XiNatsuDragnel322d ago

Atp yeah imo that's what is happening

lukasmain322d ago

Their console business and GamePass go hand in hand. If they were to stop consoles, they would be, in effect, killing GamePass. The vast majoirty of GP subs are console gamers. If you remove the console, you no longer have 30 million gamers embedded in your ecosystem. The majority will never move to PC gaming and buy a $2000 PC. They will go to Playstation where there is no GamePass.

Shane Kim321d ago

You answered your own question. Game pass coming to PS in a future near you.

Eonjay320d ago

Naw i don't so. Sony and Nintendo probably dont want it.

jznrpg320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

I can’t see Sony or Nintendo killing their own games sales. GamePass will be a PC only thing for a while with Xbox logos slapped on random devices. GamePass probably dies at some point without enough subs

got_dam321d ago

Could work... if they were publishing anything worth having. Bethesda is just making the same tired stuff over and over. Obsidian is a good studio, but they have been slipping hard. nXile isgreat, bit the last thing they even talked about was wasteland 3. Activision/blizzard is either the devil, or his closest friend.

neutralgamer1992321d ago

Even if Xbox only sells 50 million consoles next generation, Microsoft still wins. Why? Because Game Pass is the foundation of their long-term strategy — and it’s working. With 35–40 million subscribers paying monthly, Xbox doesn’t need to dominate hardware to be highly profitable.

Here’s the real model:

Xbox sells a console.

Players sign up for Game Pass.

They buy accessories.

Microsoft sells games on other platforms, which ironically pushes Game Pass even more: “Why pay $80 for this game on PS5 or Switch when you could play it for $20/month on Xbox or PC — and access hundreds more?”

Let’s break that down: $80 for a single new game, or four full months of Game Pass with dozens of AAA titles, day-one launches, and rotating third-party hits. For a lot of people — especially casual gamers, families, and budget-conscious players — the choice is obvious.

Most subscribers aren’t hardcore gamers hunting for deals. They pay full price month to month, often seeing it as a low-friction, all-in-one gaming service. Microsoft is counting on that — and it’s paying off. A large percentage of users also forget to cancel subscriptions, meaning passive revenue continues to roll in until they notice. That’s the psychology behind the success of the subscription model across industries.

And don’t forget Microsoft’s first-party firepower. With all the studios they’ve acquired, they’re in a position to release at least one major exclusive every month. Combine that with partnerships to bring in second-party and third-party titles, and Game Pass becomes a constantly evolving platform — not just a library, but a service with momentum.

Bottom line: Xbox isn’t going the Sega route. They’re not stepping back — they’re going deeper. Game Pass, not hardware, is the centerpiece of their strategy. The console is just the gateway

Jigga69321d ago

Series aren't even at 30M yet. Thinking it could reach 50M next gen is a joke. Move on.

Eonjay320d ago

I highly doubt the can push 20 million next Gen. The console is dead and watching these folks trying to reanimate the corpse is getting kinda morbid.

StoneTitan320d ago

gamepass will crash and burn in the next couple of years

blacktiger320d ago

you do realize console is dying. Not to mention next gen console might be hybrid meaning it may not just be gamepass but also Steam. Meaning ppl will end up buying games from Steam rather Gamepass.
