Will Sony Enable Cross-Network Play on PS4? Well, It Already Does

Push Square: "Microsoft's always been good at making headlines – and it usually opts to do so when this author's out of the office. It announced today that it will be enabling cross-network play on the Xbox One, a bold new direction from the Redmond manufacturer that… Well, puts yet another of its policies in line with the PlayStation 4. Perhaps it will officially ditch that dodgy indie parity clause at some point, too? Apparently it already has! (Sort of.)"

When did indies become such a huge deal last gen nobody care about indies and MS had the best program dedicated to indies XBLA and their policy was better.

Aloy-Boyfriend3722d ago (Edited 3722d ago )

Ain't that the truth, which makes me wonder why the peole that hate the PS4 suddenly hate Sony's Indie support on PS4 yet start port begging when they do well critically i.e. Rocket League, Firewatch, The Witness, and soon No Man's Sky

miyamoto3722d ago

If this "openness" is good then why it took M$ almost a decade to do what the PS3 has been doing for such a long long time?

FarEastOrient3722d ago

PS3? It started with the PS2 for games like Final Fantasy XI etc.

Cupid_Viper_33722d ago

I actually chuckle when I read comments about how "adorable" Phil Spencer is...

This move, just like the one before it where previously Xbox one exclusive games are now going on the PC as well is so layered. While the move is good for gamers, they are ONLY happening because the XBox One is failing hard...

Why would Sony be in a rush to open up crossplay between PS4 and XBox One? The only person who would gain from this is MS. For most multiplaform games the PS4 has double the install base than that of the XBox One, meaning a much larger and more dynamic community on the PS4, why would or should Sony allow MS access to that pool of players?

The thing is, MS can already see the writings on the wall. They already forcast a slowdown in hardware sales that the w10 adoption won't make up for, so they naturally have to open up their networks to compensate for that decline...because you need to keep adding new customers in order to keep that online community and oresense going.

This whole, "oh we would welcome Sony with open arms" talk is funny, because almost every PR piece from Microsoft is about "online engagement" and "number of matches and bullets fired" over their networks this month... So Sony bringing over 40 million possible customers would play right into their hands.

If you want to play online against ps4 gamers, get a damn PS4....

UltraNova3722d ago

@cupid

Well said.

The writing is on the wall. Sony would be fools to allow xb1-ps4 cross play.

Its clear xb1 adoption will drop drastically after all this PC love from MS. I mean they removed the only reason for buying a GOD damn console, the exclusives.

That^^ means xbox live on xbox will suffer (it already does from what I've seen on Rocket L's online matchmaking).

That said as a player, I would love to have xbox players on my friends list and play against or coop with them(my best friend has an xb1) but we have to face the grant scheme of things here, its not about some fanboy console war or our needs here, its about Sony vs MS and if Sony agrees to this they would be helping MS keep their boat afloat...that could be the worst business decision in the history of business.

Ratty3722d ago

@FarEastOrient

You beat me to it. Though to be fair, Final Fantasy XI ws also on the X360 and was played on the same servers as PC and PS2.

freshslicepizza3721d ago

now this is getting absurd. some mocked microsoft for not being supportive of cross-play and admired sony's willingness to be open and now that microsoft has baited sony into finally allowing playstation and xbox fans to play together you have those saying it's not in sony's best interest? wow, just wow!

why are some people here afraid to just act like gamers instead of investors?

Last gen was when Indies started getting real popular in home consoles, and yes, Microsoft played a big part on that. You're incorrect in stating that nobody cared about them last gen.

lvl_headed_gmr3722d ago

Sonys relies on Indies this gen to keep it afloat with games.

Sony is making indies a big thing now because it's their crutch to lean on.
This is why indies are so big now.

Media have their heads up Sony's azz and can't see that MS started the indie revolution last gen and it was just swept under the rug.

yeahright23722d ago Show
yeahright23722d ago

indies became a big deal because of us. we don't want to pay more for new games, and we only buy within our comfort zone.
Combine that with the developer side. They don't want to go outside the box for fear of a flop. And with the increased cost of making games but revenue staying the same, the risk/reward is thrown off balance. One miss might sink a whole company. and with so many companies going away (your THQs of the world) the number of and innovation found in AAA titles is getting crammed into a smaller box.
That leaves a huge opening for indies to pick up the slack. They don't have as much to lose in terms of needing this many million copies to sell, due to the nature of indies, most can charge less than a AAA title and they are far more willing to take risks, hence that's where a lot of the innovation/ fresh ideas are at.

Like right now, there's a kickstarter going on for mediocre monster, a jrpg where you play as some random monster, but you throw your fights. you purposefully attack the taunter, you give up exp to get the heros stronger all while having to answer to your boss.
Or there's one game on vita (forgive me the name escapes me) where it's a beat'em up but all done as part of a play. so after you defeat one guy you can see him crawling off stage.

Stuff like that you just don't get in AAAs that often. However, what I have noticed is that the plot and character development are usually the first things to get sacrificed in indies as gameplay is the king of the mountain in that world.

For the love of ...Why is it when MS announces something, why is it always twisted? He is talking about cross play with PS4 and X1 and other platforms. We all know PS did it before as did MS. Who freaking cares who did it first?? This is about allowing PS and X1 users to play against each other....that's it. Its a great feature and all that needs permission is Sony to allow it to happen. I have yet to see an article/link or proof that says they already allow it between these consoles.

Rookie_Monster3722d ago

Well said. It is really unfortunate when MS announce something good like Allowing crossplay between consoles an option for developers, we get articles like this to try to downplay it.

The way I see it, this is a win for ALL games and gamers.

sk8ofmnd3722d ago

When i seen crackdown 3 as a main topic on this website thus morning i instantly thought... Crackdown 3 canceled. I was happy it wasnt but damn that would be blow to the xb community.

As far as your comment "It is really unfortunate when MS announce something good like Allowing crossplay between consoles an option for developers, we get articles like this to try to downplay it."

It cant be that much of a suprise that ms wasnt on the high end of koolaid points earned in most gamers minds since the beg of this gen. It seems with each passing month theres very little they can do to gain back market share, 3rd party developers developing games on xb 1st, and gamers minds as a whole. That ship sailed long ago and im suprised by now you havent gotten used to all the ms hate. Its here to stay like nintys. Only thing i can say is better luck next gen. If there even is a nextbox despite what phil spencer "thinks".

uptownsoul3722d ago (Edited 3722d ago )

@MCTJim: "its a great feature and all that needs permission is Sony to allow it to happen. I have yet to see an article/link or proof that says they already allow it between these consoles."

-- The reason why you've yet to see that article/link or proof is because Microsoft has always (until today) firmly said NO (thats why Xbox missed out on games like Final Fantasy 14) ...So why would Sony make a comment when the other console manufacturer always said no?

PSN_ZeroOnyx3722d ago

Win for all? For X1 yes, for PS4 kool feature but not sure it's beneficial. Is it beneficial to PS4 if games are held back to ensure parody between PS4 and X1 titles to ensure one side has no advantages such as higher resolution/ framerates? M$ would certainly demand parody on major titles such as COD, Battlefeild, Battlefront as well as all other competitive shooters.

vallencer3722d ago

@Uptownsoul

They didn't always say no. Final Fantasy Xi allowed for cross platform play. It was on the 360. Albeit one game but not always. They had other cross platform games on their 360 that worked with pc. Give me proof and links where Sony tried this before with another console platform and I'll agree that Ms is not doing new things. Otherwise it's just you and other people bashing ms. They never liked eachother the previous generation or the one before. Difference is now the people who are the faces of their company and that Ms is not in the lead. This is only a good thing but everyone's bashing it because it's ms. Jesus Christ it's annoying.

uptownsoul3722d ago

@vallencer

The fact is Microsoft is the only console manufacturer who has ever been on record explicitly saying no to cross-console play. So in order for any cross-console play to happen this generation, the company[Microsoft] who had been on the record as saying no has to reverse and say yes.

HammadTheBeast3722d ago

I agree, why does everything have to be a competition on this site?

XBOX has opened up their doors and are willing to do cross-platform with PC and "other willing platforms". Basically, it's Sony's call now to answer and accept the decision, and allow cross platform between the PSN and XBL services.

Aenea3722d ago

In fact, it has always been MS's call since Sony was already up for it. That's the whole twisted thing about this news, people see it as something great from MS (which it is) but they were the ones all this time to not want to do this.

Now we just have to wait until they both (Sony and MS) actually stop talking about it and just implement it already, now that IS news! :)

its_JEFF3722d ago

@Aenea I think Sony's problem is that they kinda just brush these things off. They don't really even make an announcement about it, just like shareplay.

Shareplay has been around for some time now, but most PS4 owners don't even know what that is. Those same people don't even know what cross-platform play is.

I like that MS makes some noise when they make announcements. I bet XBox One will have some kind of shareplay system with in the year, but MS will do it right an make a big deal about it. And Shareplay will be associated with XBox One, good on their marketing team!

NarooN3722d ago

It's been MS's call all these years. Sony was up for it ages ago, in fact there were several PS3 games that had cross-platform with PC.

I recall like 7 or 8 years ago, there was supposed to be a cross-platform arena shooter that would be for PS3, 360, and PC, but it got canned for two reasons: 1) PC guys obviously have a huge advantage due to keyboard/mouse and 2) MS were the only ones who wouldn't allow cross-play with other platforms.

This was also a reason why Valve axed plans to keep their games updated on the Xbox 360 -- arbitrary restrictions from MS.

rainslacker3722d ago

I'm sure Sony will look into it. It'd be bad PR to just ignore it indefinitely. MS unfortunately sometimes has strings attached to the things they do, and if those strings are not acceptable to Sony, then I can't see them agreeing to it.

Another article has the developer saying that protocols and security issues have to be looked at, which is understandable.

I think the biggest concern of any console maker, Sony, Nintendo, Steam, etc would be who is going to control the parameters for allowing cross console connections. If MS wants control of that, then it's probably not going to happen. If it's a open ended connection service administered by all the parties involved, then it probably will happen. I'm not sure how they handle it now with the games they already have it implemented on, but if it stays like that, I can't foresee any problems.

blackout3722d ago

At the end of this gen all Sony fan will have is a graphics card. MS is talking about opening up the system for devs to have a ball as well gamers. Sony can not do what MS can they don't have what MS has and once the world understands this then well. I bet you this Sony will go on record soon stating that future play stations will be upgradable, thanks to Microsoft as always the console industry will move forward. Sony's whole marketing plan is MS last gen plan. Now watch Sony hop and the upgradable consoles.

Ratty3722d ago

@Blackout

If you want an upgradable console then maybe you should get a PC? They've been around for quite some time now. Anyway, it might have been true last gen that Sony was following Microsoft but this gen it's been the other way around. Or have you forgotten about that whole DRM thing they removed from the console at the last minute?

Judging from the amount of disagrees you have, it seems like it's a pretty big deal lol.

This whole one-side vs the other bullshit is so old. I quit commenting on this site pretty much for this exact reason. Sony did something good, great. Microsoft did something good, great.

But because one company did something later than the other it's a slimy situation. Really just a shame that people still fight about stuff like that when games are getting better and better each year and offering something for everyone, yet we still have these people fighting over which console is better than the other.

rainslacker3722d ago

I think gamers are cynical by nature. It's pretty normal for many of us to say, "why now" or "what's the catch", because more often than not its a departure from past policies, or there is some catch involved.

Silly gameAr3722d ago

Well, to be fair, there were some xboxers in the other article acting like MS did something totally new and amazing, and now its Sonys turn to catch up. I guess someone felt like they had to set the record straight for some reason.

uptownsoul3722d ago

@MCTJim "its a great feature and all that needs permission is Sony to allow it to happen. I have yet to see an article/link or proof that says they already allow it between these consoles."

PSN_ZeroOnyx3722d ago (Edited 3722d ago )

FFXI had PS3, 360 and PC players playing alongside each other. Sony had no issues with it whereas M$ tried to insist only PC and 360 should share servers. M$ conceded in order to get other FF games on xbox. Square Enix offered the same setup for FFXIV which M$ refused bc they still didn't want on the same servers as PlayStation. M$ is the only reason PlayStation and Xbox haven't been able to cross play already. I'll look for the link but your comment shows you have never tried to get this info on your own, opting for others to research for.

Edit: FFXI was cross play compatible between PS2 and 360 but if you had a PS3 that was backward compatible you could install the PS2 copy on it to still play alongside 360.

*** Who freaking cares who did it first?? ***

Gamers do.

***Its a great feature and all that needs permission is Sony to allow it to happen. ***

You're confused. Sony hasn't been the one stopping cross-play. We've been waiting on MS to allow it. that's why gamers care about who did it first, because the others are the ones who have been delaying things.

You can't have MS come in years after Sony has been very open with cross-play and then say "we're just waiting on Sony to allow it." We've been waiting over a decade for MS to open up to the idea.

Street Fighter among others actually exists. But as I mentioned before, this is really about PC. The Xbox Brand still has some life in it and it will be the catalyst that Microsoft uses to pull PC gamers in. How this has anything to do with the the PS4 is merely a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand. Final Fantasy XIV is already cross platform with PC and PS4 so you welcome to the party Microsoft. Its not a big deal. The real prize is PC and will be interesting to see how Microsoft connects Xbox Live to PC gaming. .

jb2273722d ago

One question though, what about Xbox could pull a PC gamer in, assuming you are talking about getting a PC gamer to buy their console?

PC gamers will already have access to the majority of MS exclusives; all cheaper, better performing & free of charge mp on their platform of choice...I don't see a single thing that would get a PC gamer to pick up an Xbox. I would see more likelihood in these moves getting an Xbox console gamer to build a gaming PC, but if the Win10 platform isn't up to snuff, most of those people would move to other avenues like Steam for their multiplat gaming shortly thereafter.

I do agree that this news is obviously about MS & Win10 though...the whole 'other networks' line was obviously a feigned goodwill gesture but the actual story here is MS finally coming to their senses & helping to support a platform that they actually have a stake in.

This is being made out to be bigger news than it will be....people expecting this to amount to cross platform console play may end up w/ a couple small experiences going that route, but there are too many other logistics that will come into play for these companies && never be clarified for the common gamer. The only thing that will change is cross plat play for PC & Xbox on certain games just like we've seen for multiple titles on the PS4 this gen. All this will do is bring the platforms to parity in that regard.

Eonjay3722d ago

I am talking about them enabling cross platform on their UWP content and then using that as leverage to bring PC gamers into their ecosystem. This all isn't just a coincidence as you stated. PlayStation is just a distraction.

jb2273722d ago

@eonjay

Ok, I thought you were talking about getting PC gamers to pick up an Xbox, but you are just saying that MS is working towards getting PC gamers into Win10?

I can see how all of these moves could bring console gamers to PC & I could see how if Xbox keeps quality MS exclusives for UWP then that would bring Steam gamers into the fold to use Win10 more, but they've gotta make sure all of the kinks are worked out in time for QB, that's the proving ground, as we've seen PC gamers aren't very patient, if you aren't ready for the rollout, they will just go back to other options. We've already seen the Gears UE as a bit of a mess, but that one can slide a bit, they've gotta have everything nailed down by QB for sure though, otherwise this whole idea will start failing pretty quickly.

I definitely agree that the real news here won't be about PS & XBO cross play but PC & XBO cross play as that is the platform that MS is working to unify. Could work out great as long as they are ready for it...gotta eliminate those borderless windows & the sli stuff and eventually enable mods and work on getting sales equivalent to Steam's to really make a mark though I believe.

DragonbornZ3722d ago

Much better title for a take on the situation lol.
Sony has allowed crossplatform play before (not talking about pc) with other consoles, but it hasn't been enforced heavily or maybe big enough for people to be like, you know, "holy sh*t this is crazy". MS does take some blame as if Sony were ever going to push for that huge crossplatform play factor they would've had to do it with Microsoft (lol srry Nintendo).

But now MS kind of took their spotlight, because 1. It's Rocket League, and 2. They're publicly sending an invitation to every platform for RL and any other game.
They made the push. And yeah it's weird since they were closed off, but earlier they publicly made the push and publicly sent out the invitations.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose25d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE25d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername24d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy25d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde25d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8625d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8625d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.
