I recently finished outlast and both amnesia and i'm currently near the end of layers of fear, in my opinion those are all great horror games.

To be fair, if you don't like first person horror games there isn't much in the market for you.

I can kind of see the authors point (something rare for me) Evil within was ok but it seemed to me to be more action than horror, plus most horror games getting released these days rely on jump scares and that just seems like cheap horror to me.
Give me something psychological any day. Personally I thought Outlast did this pretty well, I hear the most recent alien game does this pretty well also.
This is just my personal opinion but I'll always have a massive boner for the original Silent Hill and Resident Evil games (well maybe the REmake but you get my point) because they managed the psychological aspect so well, especially original Silent Hill. That game was the dogs nuts.

The kind of games you're talking about and the kind of games he's talking about are two different kinds of games. There is no good reason why both can't exist in the modern market.

As stated before, I highly suggest The Evil Within. It was such a great game with an amazing art direction, soundtrack and gameplay. It's only flaws were the story which was a bit out there, auto-checkpoints (something that should never be in a survival horror in my opinion.), character movement and hit detection.

If this game only had the quality Resident Evil 4 or Vanquish was given, this game would have been in my top 3 horrors of all time easily but its my favorite modern horror bar none.

Cry Of Fear for PC is also a game which I cannot stress enough that every horror fan should play.

Alien Isolation and Outlast were my 2 favorite so far. PT too, but that's just a teaser of a nonexistent game now

Oh and I thought Until Dawn was an awesome game too

I am with you 100%. I despise the first person view in all but a few games. I think that the evil within failed to develop a sense of dread because it was to much of a shooter. the point to point chapter based gameplay robbed the asylum of a real sense of character, something the earlier 3D metroidvania style REs and the early silent hill games excelled in. TEW almost felt like it was on rails. Also, the story's head was way too far up its own a**. A big part of good horror games is solving the mystery and it doesn't work if the mystery, once solved, is still convoluted and nonsensical.

One thing to keep in mind about the difference between oldschool horror games and games like RE4 and TEW is that oldschool games had more in common with Grim Fandango than, say, Gears of War. As for most first person horror games, I don't like the run&hide gameplay. I like fight or flight games where the choice has meaning. Combat isn't the point, its just a means to an end, a highly regulated but necessary tool for most players to proceed through the overall riddle that the game presents.

I disagree that we need AAA titles. Something more akin to a single A title would be the sweet spot IMO. Theres just too much risk involved at that level of funding and the genre needs room to fail so that it can learn and grow cause modern gaming trends just don't do that style of horror gameplay any justice.

Theres a game called Forgotten Memories that I've been keeping my eye on that looks a lot more like oldschool horror games except the camera is over the shoulder. It has a director's cut hitting the ps4 in the next few months.

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
