Universal Windows Crap

Microsoft is pushing for dominance in PC gaming with its Universal Windows Platform, and it’s not being entirely nice about it.

All my concerns about UWP put in a simple coherent message, nice one Jim F.S.S. .... and chip.

MCTJim3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

Once again, obviously, the record was set straight by Phil himself. He said it will be an open ecosystem. It will allow the little FPS counters and SLI support etc, why is it so hard to wait to GDC before passing judgement. They give a preview and the haters spin ad twist to create FUD. Enough, wait till the actual event for full details, afterwards if its the root of all evil, then by all means, it deserves to be critiqued.

Aenea3765d ago

Maybe, just maybe, MS should wait saying anything about something new until they can be 100% clear about it.

Lately there have been a lot of "Phil explains what he/they meant by...." moments...

MCTJim3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

and maybe just maybe these so call journalists should stop and think before posting comments over a small preview...its called a preview..just like a movie trailer you don't get the full story until you see the show. The problem is these so called journalists will post anything without fact checking to get the "scoop" in hopes of being recognized as the ones who broke the story.

Aenea3765d ago

Also, even if they change it to support fullscreen mode, SLI, FPS counters, etc. it will still be way more restrictive than a non-UWP game. Like with the ability to change files will make modding rather impossible unless MS allows it in another restrictive way. I understand why they want to do the files thing, since it also prevents cheating, but it's a huge change to what PC gamers are used to and indeed with MS their track record I feel it's understandable that people fear it.
Who knows what they are going to do next, the next iteration of DirectX might even only be available for UWP games making sure all the other stores like Steam can close up shop. Heck, I wouldn't really be surprised if they are already planning for that but want to introduce it slowly...

Aenea3765d ago

So you want journalists to simply ignore previews?

What they say in this video is how it is now, Phil talks about UWP, this video tells what the current drawbacks are, then Phil swoops in to tell everyone that they are going to change several of those drawbacks. Why not do that straight away? It feels weird, it sounds like they didn't think things through which is weird for such a huge company...

Maybe they do it to test the waters, to see what people think of it and react accordingly, could very well be it, but it still feels odd...

MCTJim3765d ago

No I want them to think before they spout off at the mouth without doing proper research. Preview is just that..preview....they are a poison with an agenda driven to bash without knowing the full truth...they all new GDC was next week, but yet they all cried foul...Foul based on speculation and FUD....

Ashlen3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

If you're just calling all the criticism from MANY different people including people heavily invested in both the gaming and the wider computing communities FUD. Then clearly you don't understand whats at stake and lack the vision to see how things start out small then become bigger problems over time. Or you're heavily invested in Microsoft and just want money.

If things like this aren't stopped at the start they become unstoppable in the future.

The only entity that truly benefits from this is Microsoft. That should be enough to signal that perhaps this isn't the best solution for the future.

Ashlen3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

It's not about SLI or FPS counters... those are really the smallest of issues. The issue is Microsoft trying to use its control over the Windows platform to unfairly dictate and strong arm who and how people can sell, buy, modify and update there games and software.

There is so much more I could say but if all the articles that have already been written plus years of Microsoft history aren't enough then it's clear you have way to much Microsoft shoved in your holes to hear what I (or anyone) has to say.

MCTJim3765d ago

So, you are basing your opinion on somthing we know little of

3765d ago
Ashlen3765d ago

No, I'm basing my onion on what we DO know, as well as Microsoft's long history of antitrust and anti-consumer practices.

Aenea3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

@Cobra

Yes, and when MS sees that none of the other developers is using their walled garden even tho they want to, do you think they will just go "nah, we tried" or do you think they might make one or more moves to try to get developers to use UWP?

You don't see MS capable of adding features to UWP/DirectX that non-UWP games can't use? Or worse, excluding existing features like, say, access to future versions of DirectX?

1) introduce Win10
2) introduce DirectX12 that has awesome features that only works on Win10
3) developers start using DirectX12 since it has way too many benefits
4) many users jump to install Win10 'cos of the benefits of DX12
5) introduce UWP for Win10 incl. a Games Store for first party games and interested 3rd party developers

So far so good, then:
6) introduce DirectX12.1 with additional features and optimisations gamers want and need and only make DX12.1 (and all future versions) available for UWP games

7) Steam/GOG/etc. cease to exist
8) Introduce XBL subscription for UWP

9) profit

----

If you don't see this as a possibility you're naive and I doubt there's anything MS or Phil can say or do that will make these doubts go away....

Ashlen3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

@Cobra

They can force Devs though, that's the problem.

Let me give a totally realistic scenario. What if Microsoft writes DX13 (or any necessary Windows file really) too only work with UWP.

Then with the stroke of a hand you have a situation where any company who wants to make a modern game/or program only has the option to sell it on the Windows Store.

(woops well said Aenea I was typing this while you posted the above)

darthv723765d ago

PC gamers are already used to a walled garden with Steam. Would the existence of another from MS be any real cause for concern?

Ashlen3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

@darthv72

Yes, because Valve doesn't write Windows and because you can sell your game or program on Steam as well as on your own webpage. And with Steam the user can alter whatever files they want. Also Steam doesn't exert any control or limits on your other hardware or software which is something UWP is doing.

And plus Valve is pretty highly regarded for treating consumers fairly. If Microsoft was a trusted brand people might not even question this but they aren't.

I guess we should give MS the benefit of the doubt on their PC gaming activities?

http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

These journalists have issues with Microsoft's history in the field. When you come out with a vision, you'd be right to not do so until you're ready to clarify. MS clearly haven't learned from the 2013 XB1 reveal, if they can preview something and not give firm answers about what will make it into the final version when games are already coming out on that platform.

But it's no longer a preview. Games are using the service..... NOW.

Sometimes it seems like these guys are hoping their pessimism matches the end result of UWP. . rather than the opposite.

No Xs and Os for you.

Aenea3765d ago

I agree that there is a lot of pessimism going around lately, way too much negative stuff being written about, but still, I can see why some people are reluctant to be optimistic.

For me, well, I can see the positive sides like cheating being harder to do when you can't change the files of UWP games, cross-play, Live achievements, etc. creating a more console like environment on the PC, but on the other hand I can see the negative sides as well like modding being more difficult too when you can't modify files, apparently restrictions on graphics capabilities (hence the for now no SLI, no fullscreen, etc.), etc., plus the fact that MS can basically force game developers to use UWP (now or in the future) by enabling certain features only for UWP games makes me get rather mixed feelings about all of this...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio63d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing63d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9263d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit63d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing63d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9263d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
