Edge Preview: Killzone 2

Edge writes: "Notorious by the seemingly-impossible glossiness of its E3 2005 pre-rendered 'graphical target' demo, Killzone 2's history to date has been anything but impressive. But at Games Convention 2008, the lengthy demo for the game underlined why Sony has spent so much time and money on the title alternatively labeled a 'Halo 3-killer' and/or 'the most expensive multimedia project ever undertaken in Holland'.

The first thing to point out, however, is that the things people didn't like about Killzone on PlayStation 2 are still in evidence. There's no jump. The camera wobbles around all over the place whenever you run, reload or throw grenades. The art palette remains a mixture of over-saturated blooms and a thousand different shades of grey. The Helghast are still an impersonal enemy with day-glo orange goggles on their heads."

More idiocy from Edge, trying to sound witty and clever. Obviously they wrote the first Killzone off enough to not know anything about the Helghast.

For anyone who doesn't know what i'm talking about, here's a little explanation taken from Wikipedia:

"In the game, the Helghast are a faction of human descendants who colonized the planet Helghan many generations ago. The planet's harsh environment forced the Helghast to adapt and mutate so much that they can no longer be considered human. They are stronger, faster and more resilient than their human brothers, and possess a burning hatred for humanity. Except for a small number of half-breed Helghast and trained troopers, they require a gas mask and air processing tank that creates air similar to that found on the planet Helghan."

Of course the Helghast are cold and impersonal - they are forced to be that way due to their exile. What a bunch of ignorant Edge BS! Everyone says Edge is one of the best publications out there, but I think that they always have their heads too far up their own collective asses.

It's also unfortunate that many people wrote Killzone 1 off due to the concept of the game getting ahead of the actual technological performance, because Guerrilla actually managed to make a compelling storyline that's worth following. I kind of don't want to see the game butchered by turning into a movie, but in my opinion the story would be worth the big screen treatment.

BTW, the only, and I repeat ONLY people who consider Killzone to be a a "Halo Killer" are idiots in the media and stupid fanboys who take things way out of context. Never has Sony, nor Guerrilla ever once called any of the KZ games a "Halo Killer".

Welcome to the ignore list. Be gone, troll!

claney6507d ago

wouldnt be Helghast without the red glowing eyes and there coldness, i love how the camera moves when doing certain actions just how it would in real life, never thought about jump lol

thereapersson6507d ago

It's the only way that they could adapt to their hostile planetary environment.

StephanieBBB6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

Quote from this article.

"The first thing to point out, however, is that the things people didn’t like about Killzone on PlayStation 2 are still in evidence. *There’s no jump*."

Quote from another article by the reviewer from Dailygame.
http://www.dailygame.net/ne...
"In terms of the actual gameplay, Killzone 2 is immediately familiar to anyone who's played an FPS in the past two years. However, one big and arguably welcome change is the *ability to jump by pressing the X button.* That's right, Killzone fans, your ISA or Helghan soldier now has a vertical leap."

Which one is telling the truth? =S

kapedkrusader6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

...but you also didn't read the article. The writer continues and goes into detail about how good the game really is, once you get past these "coveats".

King_many_layers6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

but to be fair, why would thereapersson feel the incentive to go on to read an article which clearly looks to be a lot of missinformed and uneducated nosense. The fact that it's been incredibly clearly stated that there is a jump function in the game makes this article automatically look like a great big pile of s**t. I for one wont bother to read the article.

morganfell6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

I am glad the Helghast are a sort of faceless enemy. There are many times when attempting to enrich the character of all of your enemies is a detriment. You want the Helghast to be this cold and relentless enemy that feels nothing and to whom your life is inconsequential. You can't get that if they are seen as having individuality and a soul of sorts, if you humanize them.

Look at every enemy in the first HALO. Look at the Brutes. They were still just big apes with shiny head dresses. But wow what an effective enemy.

The trick is that the foot soldiers are a relentless crushing force yet you give the enemy leadership at the very top character. That is where Visari comes in.

I think this moron writer needs to go back and review the controls of Killzone 2, wipe the the crap out of his eyes so he can see there is a jump function. Did this kid leave his bedroom when he wrote this?

Jump button? I don't recall Edge complaining about a jump feature when they reviewed Gears of War or GRAW/GRAW2.

kapedkrusader6507d ago

...Nontheless, you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Anyone can make a mistake, for the most part, it's a well written article.

morganfell6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

@StephanieBBB:

http://www.gamepro.com/news...

From an interview with Steven Ter, the Killzone 2 Producer:

The first Killzone didn't allow you to jump. Will Killzone 2 add this feature? Why is this feature important, or not important?

"We felt that navigating small obstacles was annoying in Killzone, but we also wanted to keep everything grounded in reality. In Killzone 2 you can jump, but you will not be able to fire at the same time. The player will also be able to perform lots of context-based actions that will be all in first-person (such as lean and peek). The feeling of immersion is very important to us."

Also:

http://games.kikizo.com/fea...

"Heide: You probably also noticed that we're jumping over objects now! That's something that we didn't have in the original Killzone, but something that we have in Killzone 2, but we still wanted to keep it realistic, so it's not that you're hopping all over the place while you're firing your weapon. You can jump and not fire your weapon, and as soon as you land you can fire again. But that means that small obstacles are not a problem; you can get to areas that otherwise you might not have gotten."

morganfell6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

Something else I just noticed in this idiotic article:

"Of course, being a demo, the pace is perhaps overly varied and somewhat exaggerated."

???? What does he want, the same pacing throughout? It makes even less sense when you read it in context. Be prepared for the ultimate bruceongames style run-on sentence.

"Of course, being a demo, the pace is perhaps overly varied and somewhat exaggerated. You move from tight-in corridor spaces up close and impersonal with Helghast to huge vista battlefields full of the buggers, with your side fighting in the distance and you, plus AI-buddy, fighting your way to get to that action through a series of ambushes and fixed gun-emplacements you must conquer and then use against their erstwhile owners (cue overwhelming firepower and a certain amount of game timing clichés)."

Again, ????

AcidHorse6507d ago

You CAN jump in KZ2. Reading that no jump comment, just proves how full of crap this guy is.

StephanieBBB6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

Many of you think that this guy made an mistake but honestly I think that this guy have never been to GC this year. I think he never got an full preview of KZ2. I think he watched gameplay footage of KZ2 at GC then sat down and wrote an review of what he saw in those vids and thought he would get away with it.

This is why the net sucks as an trust worthy source...

SmokeyMcBear6507d ago

they just want to be able to bunny hop and jump high in the sky while having perfect aim with a sniper.. that is all

orakga6507d ago

I love it when someone who understands the lore calls out nit-pickers. Kudos, Reaper.

That said, I'm still concerned about KZ2. The only thing I didn't like about the first one was the aiming. The sensitivity curve (not setting, mind you) was quite off, and it make aiming very frustrating. And since that's essentially the most important feature for an FPS, that made me put down KZ1 after only 10 minutes of playing.

I was really hoping they'd fix this, but according to some friends who played it at E3, the aiming issues are still there. Ugh... I really hope they'll fix this and make it at least as good as CoD4. Because otherwise this game looks and sounds wonderful (even the multiplayer!)

rexor07176507d ago

And it said you can jump. So which is it? And whats the deal with jumping? Do you really need to platform...

morganfell6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

HA HA HA! They have edited the article and taken out the line where they said there is no jumping.

Look, registering for that site is easier than any site ever. Just do it and then give them your loving opinion. All you need is a web mail address. No name, no birthdate, nothing.

This get's better. They removed my comments from the front page where I pointed out they had edited the article and then they banned me. Oooh, I am so worried. Ha ha. What a bunch of fakes.

"Of course the Helghast are cold and impersonal"

thereapersson6507d ago

Did you even read my comment or did you cherry pick from it to waste mine and everyone else's time?

TheExecutive6507d ago

you can jump in KZ2. HEY EDGE PRESS "X"!

pav23236507d ago

Your showing your ignorance EDGE. I will not claim to have played this or judge it without playing it. The graphics are top notch though ( from what I have seen so far ). I remember the dev saying they added jump to the gameplay, maybe I am wrong but if I am not then Edge cannot judge it either because they obviously did not play it, or just watched someone play it that decided not to try out all of the controls.

Maybe someone can verify the jump controls for us......

thereapersson6507d ago

"You can jump in Killzone 2, but you can't jump and fire your weapons at the same time. There will also be a lot of context-based actions like leaning and peeking against and around things."

DEMAN 216507d ago

1. The color palette is only washed out to create realism.

2.You can jump!

3.The camera shakes to create realism, they've said that lots of times.Just like the first person cover, and the limited hud, they said they wanted to create the most real-feeling experience, you cant do that with rich bright bloomy colors, a giant over-informative hud, and no motion blur or camera movement, when your, well...moving,or in motion.

popup6507d ago

Lol, they just added:- 'Update: Thanks for pointing out the addition of jump (although you cannot fire and jump at the same time). We've updated the article'

The forum guys who have not even played it told the 'expert' Edge chap and he just updates his article instead of revisiting and then, like a spoilt child, adds that you 'can't jump and fire at the same time though'! It seems that he can't think and write at the same time. Where do they get these people???

I remeber readign one of his earlier previews n it alos sucked...

thereapersson6507d ago

We're trying to have a valid discussion here.

S1nnerman6507d ago

They do go on to state "Killzone 2 is perhaps the first game to be worthy of the label PlayStation 3-killer app...What’s really impressive about the game though are the smaller details, like the solidness of all characters with their chunky body armor and overstated battle-worn animations. Sure it’s motion capture touched up with keyframes, but looking at it you know where a large chunk of Sony’s money went and also know that it was money well spent." There is more praise but I'm a tad lazy and I'm at work so I shouldn't even be on here to copy and paste it!

Edge started with the caveat and moved onto the good bits. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere else that jump is now included in the game.

thereapersson6507d ago (Edited 6507d ago )

Yeah, see my post above (3.2)

And now i'm out of bubbles, thanks to the stupid 360 fanboys in another article who deemed it necessary to take two of my bubbles because I called them out and they couldn't provide a proper rebuttal. If anyone is feeling generous, could I have a bubble or two please?

claney6507d ago

Lol sorry only allows me to give u one bubble haha

p.s Go Killzone 2

beavis4play6507d ago

you deserve more. i've had the "bubble steal" happen to me too.

Uncharted is a killer app for the PS3. MGS4 is a killer app for videogames as a whole.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX600d ago (Edited 600d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne599d ago (Edited 599d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro600d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken599d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown600d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72600d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken599d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya599d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast600d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood600d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro828d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72828d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_828d ago

Profchaos828d ago (Edited 828d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23828d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000829d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin829d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381133d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1133d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1133d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381133d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.
