I dont think they get it, the problem is the entire d-pad, not how many direction input the d pad can accept. 8 direction is more than enough for anything fighting games really, the problem is the crappy design d-pad physically.

and they are just using the standard pad as a reference picture for the article. It's not just the D pads response that is the problem IMHO. The design of the (Direction) pad itself just doesn't feel right for fighting games.

I was really excited to hear MS was fixing the D pad (it's the only thing about the controller I don't care for), but I guess the proof will be in functionality. I am looking forward to trying it out.

soul calibur is also alot better on the ps3 because the dpad is so horrible on 360. actually anything that isnt a shooter or rpg is alot harder to control because of the dpad. fighting games suxors on 360. its to inaccurate, the the dpad being that low sux for fighters. its sad...;/ i play scIV regular on both systems, ps3 version at home 360 at work and i cant pull off all the moves correctly on the 360 version, or parry, as cant anyone else i know.

dumb microsoft doesnt wanna make a good control that is good for all games for once.....ps3's controller is great for shooters and any other game that comes out.

the d pad on the 360 is horrible, to make it a LE is a stupid decision by MS. The 360 controller is the reason I buy fighting, racing, and sports games on the PS3 (madden 09 was an exception).
Sony also needs to fix their controller and make it a little bit bigger.

I heard from several gamers the 360 controller was really good for playing anything except fighting games... I can't confirm that since I didn't play with it too much. What's the gripe with it in its actual state? The D-PAD?

A working d-pad?

So you play racing games with the d-pad? I don't know about you, but I'll use the stick any chance I get. And I think the 360's triggers for gas/brake are also more suited for racing games than PS3s L2/R2.

But if you steer with d-pad and are good at it, then props to you!

Personally i loved the feel of the 360 controller because i have always played playstation since the start of PS1, and because its new... the controller for the 360 is smaller then the original Xbox one but if they could slim it down even more would be sweet... the D-Pad doesnt need to be that big its the biggest thing on the conrtoller and its the less used...

I'm going to reserve getting pissed about this until it's confirmed that the D-Pad actually works. I don't know how they can get that thing to function properly without totally changing the design.

MS is retarded. Alot of people think that the Xbox 360 controller is near perfect but the D-pad is the main problem and here we have MS fixing that and then saying that we won't get our hands on it. It's just stupid.

it's not like the ps3's controller where you have to switch it to use a usb mouse a keyboard so that you can play FPSes, unlike 360, 360's controller was make for fpses in the first place.

I have had a couple controllers die on me, meaning the analog or even the shoulder buttons would not work. One original white, and two blacks. I have not had problems with my halo or my blue controller...hope everyone had some better luck!

Regardless of the fact that many people like the 360 controller, the point is it's broken.

It sucks when you play fighting games period. Don't kid yourself and try to claim that it is acceptable, trust the experts it is not.

With Virtua Fighter, Street Fighters, Soul Caliburs, Mortal Kombats all on or coming to the 360 it is about time that they admit there is a problem and fix it.
This new controller might actually be the solution to solve the problem if Microsoft owns up. Why would an American game company release a LE controller and not make it available to its core audience (US) first? Is that not a slap in the face, a kick in the sack...etc?

Hmmm...The main reason I hate my 360 D-pad is because of how, its pretty much a flat joystick, not that it doesn't pick up more directions, that it picks up the wrong direction, and I can't tell if I'm holding straight west or northwest. I do not like how they are not their own seperate buttons. I remember playing MK:DA and Deception on my original Xbox. Doing the combo's and in the training was impossible. I'm sure the 360's Dpad is still enhanced over the original Xbox's,but it still feels similar to me. That's just what I think though. I usually don't play fighting games all that often anymore, anyway.

And to people talking about the PS3 controller and FPS. If you try and ever argue a controller is better than mouse and keyboard you know nothing. The fact that there is that option is amazing. And the system leading in FPS' and suppose to be for the hardcore gamer(360) not having that option is sad. Halo 1 and Halo 2 are better with the mouse and keyboard so why wouldn't they put this option and try to increase sales on their system. And the PS3 controller ain't bad at all for FPS. Although the triggers could have been reworked better it's still decent, and they do sell add ons to make it better but Sony should have made it more efficient.
