Phil Spencer keeps shuttin' down idiots

"On Twitter someone asked Phil what games he's looking forward to. Among them is Uncharted 4. A reply came in saying "'Xbox Head' talking about how great UC4 will be, just wave the white flag already. This is embarrassing sad to say." Phil shot back "We should all applaud when a team does something special. Those who hope for [a] team to fail due to platform aren't real gamers."

kenmid3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

let me slowly walk you through this, Phil is saying that you should congratulate developers when they put out a game not hate on them just because it's not on the platform you choose. sample: Xbox fans should congratulate naughty dogs and the PlayStation fans for putting a great game in Uncharted not hate on them.

3731d ago
Why o why3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

Phil is a good sport. . I think he's liked throughout the industry. There will always be the element of 'them vs us ' with some fans where they never turn it off. Always on I call it. . Samsung or lg owe me money. . .

Those types find it near impossible to give credit to things not on their preferred platform. If they can muster the strength to compliment, it's usually of the backhanded sweet bitter kind.

This guy seems like he's for the games and gamers. . He's been consistent over the years. If this was greenberg I'd understand the cynicism. Let Phil be

_-EDMIX-_3731d ago

@Infected- nope. Phil is just letting it be known that just because they are in a business, doesn't mean they have no common sense or free will.

If a team does a great game, clearly they are going to take note and congratulate vs trash talk or try to downplay its existence. I see no point to that and clearly Phil does too.

I mean......was he suppose to say nothing?

freshslicepizza3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

@The_Infected
"You ever think he may just be playing the nice guy?"

you want him to play the bad guy?

"He's always saying something on Twitter to get some attention. I could be wrong but it does seem that way sometimes."

you are wrong because you fail to grasp what twitter is. he answers peoples comments. the initial comment was the xbox one was should wave the white flag, meaning give up and surrender, all because of uncharted 4 (and no doubt because the ps4 is selling so well). it just shows the lack of maturity out there and lack of respect.

his answer was those who want others to fail are not real gamers. and sadly that attitude happens here on n4g too.

naughty dog are one of the top developer teams in the world, what they do is try and make others do better. that's how things should be viewed but instead you have people acting like idiots (term used on this article) saying dumb things like uncharted 4 is so much better than quantum break or hoping quantum break or other microsoft games fail (or in this case the xbox one should cease to exist) because they are way too involved in the silly console wars.

SonyWarrior3731d ago

Phil Spenser seems like sonys best weapon yet an corporate espionage that made his way to the top. Hats off to Phil though as I am very excited to play Forza on PC when it comes out.

PFFT3730d ago

He is not playing the nice guys part. HE is a pretty badass dude. And whats more its always been know that ALTHOUGH he is the head of the MS gaming division he is a gamer at heart AND plays everything from PS4 games to Xbox One games.

candystop3730d ago

Honestly whoever talked down UC? I think this should become normal culture for everyone. Many games are released and talked down upon.

3730d ago
IceKoldKilla3730d ago

@The_Infected I doubt it. PlayStation has also been tweeting out congratulating the competition. Both companies have been nice to each other on social media.

Morgue3730d ago Show
rainslacker3730d ago

@Infected

I think Phil really is a gamer, and is actually very much into good games and seeing more of them made. Before he was the head of Xbox, he's been seen discussing games at length, and praising all sorts of games from the past, present and future, and being able to discuss them with enough detail to see that he's actually into playing them.

I think he does mention the competition too much, and I think he should reign it in some in that regard. The only time I personally take issue with those mentions is when he turns around and tries to make that mention into something about MS.

ZombieKiller3730d ago

I agree wholeheartedly. They are still games despite what consoles they're on and people still like them.

Play games... not consoles

Silly Mammo3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

Another thing to consider too is that there is a lot of lateral movement in the gaming industry especially at the top. It would be beneficial for Phil to be magnanimous toward the competition because you may one day be working for them. And that goes for all of the big 3.

donthate3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

I'm glad Phil Spencer is stamping out the fanboys. Let them either change ways or scurry some where else. We don't need immature behavior on Xbox platform and these fanboys are holding back gaming!!!

miyamoto3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

Phil Spencer & the whole of Microsoft still owes the Xbox fans an apology for lying to them.

"Those who hope for [a] team to fail due to platform aren't real gamers." Phil Spencer

He is right. Wishing negativity is counterproductive to gaming overall. It servers no purpose.

Only people who do that are idiots who like to brag about what they have. Otherwise known as douche bags.

Wii U,XB1,PS4 & soon to be NX are all worth owning.

darthv723730d ago

Been telling people on this site for a long time that it's better to embrace the games than belittle the platforms. The systems are just players, the means to play the game. It's the games themselves that provide the entertainment and there are lots of really cool and appealing games that are just only available on different platforms.

I bare no allegiance to any platform as it serves no purpose to me. I bare my allegiance to the games and having fun. While others are fixated on pixels and resolution...i'm over here having fun with my kids playing mario kart or sonic or little big planet.

Once people close their eyes to the console war pettiness and open them to the fun of just playing games, the whole hobby becomes that much more entertaining.

rainslacker3730d ago

@darth

Can't we embrace the games and still belittle the platform?

kupomogli3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

@3-4-5

I own the Nintendo and Sony consoles and portables. I wish Nintendo and Microsoft would stop developing consoles and release everything on the Playstation consoles so I can have all new releases on one console.

How is that counterproductive for gamers? It doesn't do anything less for gamers. Gamers are getting the exact same amount of games, just on a single console, not having to purchase multiple consoles. That's what these console wars are mostly about anyways, the fact that all these games are on their console and they don't need another console to satisfy their needs.

omegaheat3730d ago

Brag about what they have? It's pretty pathetic really. Anyone could buy either of these systems on a paperboy's salary. It's not like someone who owns a Aston Martin comparing his car to a Dodge Challenger. I bought 3 Xbox Ones within a year. One for my son, one for my nephew and one for me. Obviously I don't have buyer's remorse. The PS4 is a great console, I just happen to be more moved by the Xbox One because it does more over-all in my opinion. It just keeps getting better and better.

Although I agree that the gaming industry is a bit retarded with illogical fanboys just spewing garbage at a troll like level all over every video game site on the planet..I also don't think Phil is the defining factor of what a gamer is. A gamer imo is someone who plays games. Board games, Text games, Video games, Card games etc. Now can you be an asshole and also game? of course.. that's like 80% of N4G but in no shape or form does that not make you a gamer nor does it change the allegiance of electronic parts and plastic you ally and the ideologies that come with them.

The immature fanatics makes me embarrassed to be associated with them.

DLConspiracy3731d ago (Edited 3731d ago )

I was just lightly perusing who this wrath guy is and he's just crazy. I mean like legitimately lost in his mind. I can't believe there are people who actually support him. They have to be made up of little kids. If not... man., if not... that's sad.

Dark_Crow3730d ago

There are fans and then there are fanatics also known as fanboys. They are toxic. gaming isn't.

Maybe take a break from forums for a while. I know I want to. Or at least I try not to read forums sections as much.

Phil Spencer Was Good for Xbox, but His Legacy Is Complicated

Was Phil Spencer good for Xbox? Whatever you think of the retiring boss’s decade-plus tenure, there was rarely a dull moment.

Lightning7768d ago

Too soon to say. What if things are more of the same? That's my biggest fear.

KyRo68d ago

You don't get rid of big portions of a division to replace them to do the same thing. MS has been critical of Xbox for a few years now.

As a Sony fan, I hope they can bring competition back to Sony because I think Sony have become very complacent the generation. They haven't had time try and whilst there's been a few good exclusives, nothing on the level or as memorable as previous PS generations.

S2Killinit67d ago

I disagree with your blanket statement but overall yeah I think they need to step up more. However, I’m not sure that has anything with xbox but rather with the disruptions we had at the beginning of the generation. Covid, and then the shortage in chips, then the ram…

MrDead68d ago

Yes the industry and it's workforce thank Phil for the massive industry consolidation, thousands fired and still being fired because of MS buyups and for making people like Bobby Kotick even richer.

Reaper22_67d ago

Thats true. Bobby did get a little richer. But name a CEO who isn't rich or getting richer. When I look around the industry I see a bunch of people getting fired. Not just from Microsoft. That is, unless you think the devs from Bluepoint deserved to be fired. Unfortunately, things like this will continue to happen whether you like it or not.

MrDead67d ago

Can you list other companies that are doing mass layoffs because of spending $80 billion on massive industry consolidation? Can you list other companies that purchased two of the largest publishers to make the industry less competitive?

Your fangirling over MS's corporate greed doesn't work on me kid, it does expose you though.

CrashMania68d ago

Was he? It became slightly better after he took over, but it turned in to a gen of just halo gears and forza. And he tried to monopolise massive parts of the industry with ridiculous acquisitions that ironically lead to the opposite, a near complete collapse of xbox console sales, and putting their tentpole IPs everywhere, all but abandoning xbox consoles going forward for a PC disguised like one.

Reaper22_68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Id say his legacy is complicated, but if you focus on all the bad and ignore the positive things anyone can seem bad. He did have some positive impacts on the xbox platform.
Launched and grew Gamepass-
Invested in backwards compatibilty enabling thousands of older titles to play on modern hardware-
Grew the xbox box first party lineup
Brought xbox into the PC space
Hardware and feature improvements for xbox consoles
Pushed for cross-play support

And there's more but if you asked xbox gamers they'd say that he is viewed as overall a positive thing for the brand. No one expects non xbox gamers to say many positive things about him or the brand. Project Helix happened under his leadership and that is seen as a positive for the brand too.

SonyStyled67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

Launching and growing Gamepass as a positive? When it was $1 absolutely! This is also what fueled the death of Xbox as the standard living room console

TiredGamer67d ago

Agree. With how XBox imploded after the attempt to monopolize the industry, and one of the worst launches of a new console, we might be edging to Phil being a disaster to Xbox in the long run.

MDTunkown68d ago

He was good the first 6 months as the lead

Agent7567d ago

Then he forgot about the games. Poor Phil.

Phil Spencer Retiring, Sarah Bond Out, Microsoft AI Exec Asha Sharma Named New Xbox Boss

Big changes are being made at the top of Microsoft's gaming division.

CrashMania88d ago (Edited 88d ago )

MS knack for one upping bad news from other companies so soon afterwards is pretty astounding lol. Can't say I'm surprised though, this gen has been dreadful for the xbox brand.

Being replaced by an AI boss exec though, yikes.

88d ago Replies(8)
-Foxtrot88d ago

I always had this theory that they both wait to see if the other announces something bad so they can announce their bad thing, thus the two talking points bleed together enough to cause overall confusion online.

It then becomes just a big bad thing for the industry rather than a specific company. Wouldn't be surprised if Ubisoft were up next again at this point.

Eonjay88d ago

I have to agree with you. As if this decision was made today. Yeah right lol

darthv7288d ago (Edited 88d ago )

Huh... well that is sure interesting.

@crash, is it bad news though? I mean many here have said he needed to leave... now he and Bond are leaving. That should be good news to some.

Extermin8or3_88d ago

It's more the fact the person incharge of AI being taking over. That's a very deliberate decision.

Profchaos88d ago

Xbox fans have wanted Phil gone for a long time he's probably the least favourite exec of all time behind matrick purely because uber his leadership he decived fans and took the Xbox brand multiplatform

badz14988d ago

Indian takeover of Microsoft

PapaBop87d ago

Considering MS's obsession with ai, this is probably a demotion for her. Still, I enjoy poking fun at Spencer but ultimately it's sad to see him go, he's made mistakes for sure but I think he genuinely cared about the Xbox brand. Sharma seems very corporate to me and certainly not the Spencer replacement Xbox fans would have hoped for.

They are integrating everything into one platform (PC-like experience), that says it all. There is no longer a regular Xbox console, games are installed from Steam etc. on the next console/PC hybrid [if desired].

shinXseijuro206d ago

If the rog costs over 1000k with the tax and shipping included to Canadian consumers , what will the hybrid Xbox / pc cost ? If I were to go fully pc next gen I wouldn’t want to be locked behind an ecosystem after putting over 1000k out for the console/pc/hybrid . It’s already off to a bad start

shadowfax33206d ago

the screen itself was key factor for Xbox ally x final retail price..the console wont have it.

but even if it did cost 1000$, if it can play new PC games in high settings then price is kinda justified.

shadowfax33206d ago

Eonjay206d ago

If it cost that much if better be upgradable otherwise it won't have the biggest advantages of either PC (upgradeability) or console (price/performance).

DarXyde206d ago

And this is the point I don't think Microsoft understands. Investing in their ecosystem after 2025 doesn't make sense to me. People playing on console are going to look at this price and scoff. It is probably also too late to make an ultra-powerful console: visual fidelity and frame rates are really in a good spot right now. With next generation platforms, no one should really be expecting anything astronomical. That will take serious power and the hardware to do that is simply not practical, especially in this economy with this US president.

Launching this thing has exclusively one benefit: You can play PlayStation and PC-exclusive games on Xbox (assuming it really does allow for Steam). But even then, why would any spend this much on static hardware?

I don't get this direction at all. Maybe they really do have pressure to get that 30% profit margin. If that's the case, I wouldn't count on them cutting down the price of hardware and selling it at a steep loss by allowing games on other platforms. But hey, they're the trillion-dollar company, so I might be just be talking about something I don't understand.

gold_drake206d ago

love how confident they are in their absolute idiocy

dveio206d ago

A console primarily is a choice by budget. And people have

• different budgets and
• only even want to spend different budgets

I think it's a bad business choice them leaving the console business.

And in turn a good business choice from Sony to keep building a classic home console with PS6. (Which I highly doubt won't even exceed nor even touch PS5 Pro's release price.)

When they bought Zenimax and ActivisionBlizzardKing, they should have upped their Xbox support program to 100bn and spend the rest of it for building studios & creating new games, giving their developers freedom & full creative control.

But they hit the roof at 75bn. This was it.

And then went to maximize profits by 30% starting Fall 2023, according to Bloomberg, and put their bets only on "Call of Duty in Gamepass will do".

I can already picture their next premium Xbox failing at a 90:10 chance.

Dark-soul206d ago

Not budged, if i want i can buy pc for 10k , but i prefer consoles, because games are better optimized on consoles and more cozy to sit in couch and play on huge 2 meter tv and have dolby atmos setup + ps5 controller is cool + nostalgia = i will always play on consoles

dveio206d ago

"Not budged, if i want i can buy pc for 10k“

Yeah. That's my second point above, like "or only even want to spend a specific budget".

But console gaming, no matter the direction of people's reasons, is a budget choice.

There's been a market for "a gaming box cheaper than a top gaming PC" for almost 40 years now.

And it will continue to exist.

Miraak82 205d ago

Optimized doesn't really mean better or the best version or experience you can have though . I'm ready to get into PC gaming again soon as I really don't want to play most new games on my base PS5, having to choose between gfx and performance is such a drag as choosing either/or is a hindered experience and I've felt it for some time now . I could waste money on a Pro or timegate myself till the ps6 comes out but I think I'm gonna step into the future now.

I'm like the complete opposite of you as my console setup is like a PC setup with a 27 monitor , gamer chair , big desk , headset and even have a KB hooked up to my ps5 .it's so hard to play competitive and mmo games on a big screen lol.

jwillj2k4205d ago

Console gaming is absolutely not just a budget choice. We want the exclusive games, better experience and to support the brands we like. Budgets do come into the picture but this is the same for every industry, including PC’s. This is why “budget gaming pc’s” with similar prices never sell like ps/nintendo.

Jin_Sakai206d ago

Another Xbox console will be DOA. Just stick to making games and leave the hardware behind. Xbox is over.
