'Uncharted 4' Creators Plot Nathan Drake's Last Hurrah

The creators of "Uncharted 4" — much like cliff-diving, treasure-hunting series protagonist Nathan Drake — aren't afraid to take a few risks.

DragonDDark3753d ago (Edited 3753d ago )

"This is the biggest, most ambitious 'Uncharted' — let alone game — that Naughty Dog has ever endeavored to take on," said Straley. "We want to do this justice. We want it to be a mind-blowing, eye-popping, sweaty-palms adventure. Everybody is bleeding out of their eye sockets to make it come together. We want to make sure Drake is sent off properly."

My body is ready! Even though all of that^ will happen to it. Haha

Drake?
Drake!?
Draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!!!! !!!!!!

PR_FROM_OHIO3753d ago

This game is going to be something special i can feel it!!! But I'm going to miss my buddy Nathan Drake lol

user66660473753d ago

I'm sure this isn't really the last Uncharted. It basically prints money and Sony knows it.

Perjoss3753d ago

Studios dont want to work on the same thing forever, good variety is essential to keep the creative juices flowing. I have faith that ND can create another awesome franchise from nothing and make it a big success. I'm hoping for sci-fi but I'll be on board with pretty much anything they decide to go with.

TwoForce3753d ago

Well, Sony might be. But they let their first party studios do whatever they want.

Moe-Gunz3753d ago

Sony is going to let ND do what they want. If they want this to be the last, it will be.

‘I don’t think prompting is art.’ The Last of Us director tees off on generative AI

Bruce Straley doesn't think gen AI has a place in game development.

dveio170d ago

And he is correct, at the least in the department of art design itself.

badz149169d ago

prompting is everywhere nowadays. some even call prompting in engineering as a legit field. sure...prompt away but I will never visit your building, ride your bridge or use your stuff you built with just prompting

I mean, yeah, AI is in the cloud.

Same. I have loved literally every Naughty Dog game since the first Crash. Can't wait for this game.

isarai265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Same! 🤜💥🤛 Even their lows are a step above anyone but maybe R*. I have my concerns on some things but i dont doubt im gonna love it!

-Foxtrot265d ago

They really shouldn’t have gotten big stars for this, it just feels like that’s what’s going to inflate the budget.

Nolan North wasn’t a big TV / Film star but he killed it as Nathan Drake for example.

pwnmaster3000265d ago

What??
Did you have a problem with cyberpunk or death stranding? She isn’t even that big compared to what other games have.

-Foxtrot265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Actually, yeah a little

If they didn’t waste all that money on big stars for Cyberpunk maybe it could have been used to refine the game a bit before launch so it wasn’t as broken, or maybe help delay the game or something in that ball park.

It’s not just her anyway, it also has Tony Dalton and Kumail Nanjiani aswell. Who knows who else at this point.

Eidolon265d ago

They spent probably way too much on Keanu Reeves and marketing and it turned being more of a scam for early adopters.

DarXyde265d ago

I don't really think those are good examples. The most expensive cast member for Death Stranding was...I don't know, maybe Mikkelsen? Reedus doesn't really command a crazy contract either. Generally, if they star in a TV series consistently or smaller movie projects (like Boondock Saints), they're not terribly expensive—Konami tends to be strict on budgets which is probably why Sutherland got so few lines in MGSV.

Cyberpunk 2077 has the nicest guy ever in Keanu Reeves and I wouldn't be surprised to hear he did it for the love of it. Idris Elba though... He might be a pretty penny, but maybe not out of reach—he does star in two "premium" shows however in Luther and The Wire.

pwnmaster3000265d ago

@Dar
Hell no. Idris Elba is pretty up there man.
He is in a lot of good movies.

I wouldn’t say he is more expensive than Keanu but he is up there. Way more well known then the actors in this game

S2Killinit265d ago

Sony is movie studio too. They have access to top talents in house.

-Foxtrot265d ago

They’ve still got to pay them…

Killer2020UK265d ago

I wonder what the proportion of overall budget accounts for casting. Would be interesting to know if it really has that much of an impact.

RaiderNation264d ago

Celebrity ties to projects draw additional interest. It's no different from animation studios like Pixar or Illumination using marquee names to voice their animated movies. I'm sure these studios have a team of "bean counters" that weigh the cost/benefit to using known actors and they have concluded that its worth the additional expense.

He speaks as if uncharted and last of us had good gameplay. The actual gameplay has always been mediocre, but the story telling, environments, pacing, basically everything else is best in class. So if they can keep all of that and include gameplay then we are in for a good one.

73oo73ie3265d ago

I mean there’s only so much you can do with a 3rd person semi-grounded shooter

BlackCountryBob265d ago

Mediocre is a bit harsh. It’s fair to say that they are not revolutionary or reinventing the third person cover shooter / stealth, but their actual mechanics of being a 3rd person cover shooter are pretty much best in class. Beneath any opinions about story, I don’t think any game before or since has quite nailed the movement flexibility and gun play satisfaction of TLOU2 when you get into a intense fight, and Uncharted 4 is a riot with the shooting incredibly satisfying.

isarai265d ago

Uuuuuh what? To this day not a single game plays like any entry in either series (Besides maybe U1) ESPECIALLY U4 and TLOU2. Tf are you talking about? The mobility and flexibility in combat mechanics are unmatched!

Hypertension140265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

@isarau

That's what I was thinking. Yes, the first three uncharted games and the last of us part 1 DO feel a bit dated, but uncharted 4 and part 2 have some of the most advanced movement I've ever seen in a 3rd person shooter. I dare some give me another game thats on their level, only red dead redemption 2 comes close.

jznrpg265d ago

@Hypertension they feel dated going back but at the time of release Uncharted (especially 2/3) and TLOU1 was really good.

Rimeskeem265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Isn't the pacing and environments part of gameplay? Like depending on the stuff you can interact with in the environment and what the gameplay is at various point (pacing). In TLOU you can set traps, go guns blazing, or try to take everyone out silently depending on resources. Uncharted has less variance in most of the game but in 4 you did get to have some control over stealth.

Krablante265d ago

You’d a little dumb aren’t you? TLOU 2 has the best gameplay you could possibly experience. You must be dense my bruh

YodaCracker265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

I agree with this. I haven’t played another 3rd person shooter with such satisfying combat and stealth as TLOU2. The stealth doesn’t feel gamey, it feels natural to move around, go prone, and avoid detection. And when you get into combat, it is very intense with excellent enemy AI and satisfying realism and gore.

Few games excel at both stealth and open combat. Usually they do one really well and the other feels subpar. In those games you will either avoid stealth altogether or, in the opposite scenario, reload your save whenever you break stealth. TLOU2, on the other hand, excels at both and feels perfectly natural to switch between the two when the moment calls for it.

And both forms of gameplay are equally intense. Carefully sniping with your bow and slipping by a group of heavily armed enemies can be just as intense as being surrounded by enemies, diving into cover, and just barely surviving down to your last bullet and a sliver of health.

S2Killinit265d ago

Its one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion.

MrBaskerville265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

That game is excellent on hardcore difficulty. It turns it into a really intense stealth/survival horror game. Went from a 25 hour game to a 40 hour game.

Completely uninterested in any project that Neil Druckmann is involved in.

Becuzisaid265d ago

Save it for the next time you get excited watching another of his anal rape scenes.

isarai265d ago

@Becuzisaid

When tf did that happen? 🤔

Sounds like you never played the game really! Just over here pole riding the edeglord train thinkin it makes you look cool 🤣

S2Killinit265d ago

@Becuzisaid
We know, his games offend your sensibilities.

Becuzisaid265d ago

You're right, I'm offended by boring as shit, over produced games. Naughty Dog games used to be fun. Now they're barely tolerable.

S2Killinit265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Oh yeah? Well I think you’re boring as shit. So here we are.

Becuzisaid265d ago

Your response is "I know you are, but what am I"? Lol well done.

I'm not going to comment back to every little person because it's all just one echo chamber anyways. I have my reasons for really not liking this guy making the decisions and deciding the direction Naughty Dog is taking the last handful of years. If you want to assume it's my "sensibilities" or politics, or whatever else you think I don't mind. You have your idea of great media, and I have mine. I will have no regrets or "shame" for missing any game with him at the helm. Maybe he can change my attitude toward that one day, and I'd be happy to support Naughty Dog games again.

I don't know any of you, and you don't know me. But we've all seen the impact of the cult mentality like this industry's in the last few days, and I'm done with it.

S2Killinit264d ago (Edited 264d ago )

bro you've been online too long, go be social off the Internet for a bit and get recalibrated.

Notice how these people can’t ever articulate why they don’t like ND games? They just start throwing out tired non-words like woke or post memes and emojis. I’d bet they’re all maga types, same low iq behavior.

Killer2020UK265d ago

Shame you won't get to enjoy what's likely to be a really good game because of your preconceived notions. I thought you lot were against reactionaries?
