Review: Superhot (DarkZero)

Simon Lundmark: "I'm going to be completely honest; my intent with this review is to get you to play Superhot. Perhaps you're a numbers person? Then just scroll past all the text and my work here is done. Do you need a little bit more than that? Then crack open a beverage and sit back, because I'm about to throw everything at you."

9's & 10's for everyone this gen...honestly they have become so commonplace they are nearly irrelevant. As recently as last gen there was a much wider spread for review scores, but it seems like everything these days is reviewed an a scale that starts @ 7 & ends at 10...judging by other impressions I have no doubt that this is a great game, but absolutely perfect? I just find that hard to believe. I wouldn't even award that score to some of my absolute favorite games of all time.

PixelGateUk3730d ago

Depends where you look.

On the flip side, from personal experience, when you give a fair score of 7/10 etc people say the review is 'negative'. The blame for cheapening high scores isn't always with the author

@pixelgate

Fair point, but critics should never take into account the amount of flak they may get from the viewing public when they score a product. I've personally gotten behind plenty of reviews with crazy low scores for games I've personally dug if they justify their opinions fully. I'm not trying to pick on this outlet in particular because I don't follow it & I don't know their metric but in general I don't think the right response to reader criticism for low scores is to rate everything a 9 or 10 (again, not directing this towards this site or any other particular outlet just wanna make that clear).

Honestly these days I have more respect for the more harsh critics out there as long as they fully outline how they got to their score. Also anytime I see a perfect 10 heaped upon something my knee jerk reaction is to be skeptically & I think that is fully reasonable. Even the best pieces of art can stand to be improved upon & we really never know the full weight of art until it has been in the zeitgeist for an extended period of time. There are games that I would rate a perfect 10 for my own preferences, but if I were to present an opinion meant to be consumed by the masses as a median idea of what is on offer, I'd score it lower to account for obvious flaws that may be inconsequential to me but worthwhile to point out for the general public who may not share my views

I guess reviewing is a tricky prospect in that regard, you can either take a fully technical approach meant to be the least biased it can be, or you simply just present your take & in the process if you are handing out a perfect score, disregard flaws. I think there should be "critic reviews" & "user reviews" within every reviewer, they need to balance that line between academic dissection & personal fan perspective & find a way to get across the way the game made them feel personally while also being aware of things that many may consider flaws.

the price was quite a surprise to me. $35... not sure about this. This game had $15 written all over it

Great month, looking forward to Hot Wheels, I really love some good old arcade racing

darthv721323d ago

Heck yeah... love me some hot wheels

CobraKai1323d ago

It’s fantastic. I paid full price and it’s worth it

blackblades1323d ago

People still judging months?

LG_Fox_Brazil1323d ago

Of course, these subscriptions cost money, you know?

MrVux0001322d ago

Something inherently wrong with that?

Crows901322d ago (Edited 1322d ago )

Yeah. Ps plus gives you value for your money. Unlike a different subscription that just takes your money. Hence why Sony where the first at every turn to give what players want or appear to be interested in. Free monthly games...check. subscription service with games ...check. And as always Microsoft goes in to do the same but constantly fails at giving good value. Games with gold has sucked the majority of it's existence. Gamepass is more expensive than ps plus extra and it doesn't give you online or monthly games. Ultimate is the most expensive service and yet it has less high rated games on its service than ps extra.

So yes. We should always judge these services for the value they give.

Mobis-New-Nest1323d ago

Hopefully they have God of War Ragnarok, Modern Warfare 2 Remake and Last of Us Remake for December 2022. This selection is down right depressing 😞

FinalFantasyFanatic1322d ago

Yeah, nah, they're not going to give us Ragnarok when it's practically just come out, they know they can still make alot of money off that one for another 6 or so months, probably the same with the Last of Us Remake.

Crows901322d ago (Edited 1322d ago )

Oh so you want all of the games for pennies. You think that would help the devs much? Gaming isn't a charity business.

another good line-up. Hot Wheels looks interesting. Never played it.
Still hooked in Need for Speed Heat (this month's PS Plus free game)

darthv721323d ago

This just reminded me to nab NFS before it was yanked. Thanks for that.

lucian2291323d ago

Looks like another good month. Really was happy with gran blue fantasy last in the current month.

MIDGETonSTILTS171323d ago

I’m so glad I didn’t buy this on sale, albeit now I have to get the dlc

CobraKai1323d ago (Edited 1323d ago )

I didn’t know Superhot was a non-vr game too.

Mr Logic1323d ago

For those that read this, keep in mind that Superhot was a flat game that was later made into VR. It wasn't a VR game that was ported for more sales. Both are worth playing as the levels and scenarios are different in both versions.

Six Spin-offs to Celebrate SUPERHOT’s Five-Year Anniversary

Dave writes: "Can you believe it’s been five years since SUPERHOT landed on the Xbox One? It’s one of those ‘time goes fast’ things, which - of course - is the opposite of what SUPERHOT’s about. To mark the five year anniversary of the wonderful red and white bolt-from-the-blue that arrived in 2016, we thought we would suggest some spin-offs for the IP. SUPERHOT - you’re welcome."

Makes sense to me. Especially the John Wick spinoff. Course, I would have loved more content for VR where it really shines. They should learn from the developers of Pistol Whip. They continue to update and spin new game modes like the future one and the upcoming western one that are like what the article is wanting.

But Super Hot definitely brought something new to gaming.
