Glad someone Finally someone set him straight..

Aeery3752d ago (Edited 3752d ago )

Considering his past, present and future, I'm wondering if he is looking for a new job at Nintendo.

Ps I agree that rant wasn't very professional.

3-4-53752d ago

* Ahmad stated on Twitter that the comments by Mahler were, “Quite an uninformed and immature rant, lacking any real understanding or professionalism.”

* When told that such blow-outs are the reason why secrecy exists in the first place, Ahmad responded that there’s still a lot up in the air with such products. “The secrecy is because it’s a commercial product in development and will undergo rapid changes in concert with devs.”

* He also stated that there have been cases where dev kits were handed out before launch with the PlayStation 4. “At PS, we loaned out a lot of kits pre-launch to a lot of devs. Obviously coming out with such nonsense won’t help with trust.”

* Business development manager at Microsoft Studios Phil Waymouth said he was envious that Ahmad was in a position to comment on this issue, to which the latter responded, “Former PlayStation guy supporting Nintendo against unprofessional rant gets tacit support from Microsoft guy.”

* It may sound like Ahmad is being harsh but he denies as much. “No I’m not harsh at all and you don’t have the full picture,” he said to another user. Which is pretty much a good point when no one really has any information on what the NX is, Nintendo’s dealings with developers for the platform, launch plans, etc.

* All good points. That director/developer sounds like a whiney entitled spoiled brat who can't get whatever he wants.

Very unprofessional, and now he has outed himself as somebody not to be trusted in the gaming industry.

donwel3752d ago

I couldn't agree with him more. What we're getting with some of these indies (especially the smaller ones) are people who don't understand how the industry works, especially the confidentiality that's pretty much required when creating a new console, then acting like petulant children when they don't get things their own way.
I there was any proof that these idiots haven't been on the gaming scene long, this is it.

jb2273752d ago

Isn't Moon Studios an MS exclusive dev now? If so, why in blue hell would Nintendo give them a dev kit? If they aren't MS exclusive devs, what kind of cache do they think a single highly praised title affords them? I understand something like Ori would be right at home on a Nintendo console but Moon would still be far down on the list deserving of a box, doubly so after they prove that they can't keep their mouths shut in the first place

freshslicepizza3752d ago

the proof will be at launch. let's see how well nintendo works with third party. lets see how the quality of the games are compared to nintendo's who in all likelihood will have a lot more hands on time with the hardware.

“No I’m not harsh at all and you don’t have the full picture,”

Great way to sum this up in my opinion. We KNOW next to nothing about NX and speaking early on support is asinine. People say historically, Nintendo has tried hard to be self sufficient. That is true in more recent times, but Nintendo back in the day actually had great support all around. Final Fantasy VII was actually supposed to be multiplatform but the N64 created a limitation there. Companies had every intention of supporting Nintendo but it was GameCube going forward that changed the trend quite a bit. Interestingly enough, it's also the beginning of Iwata's leadership. He did great in making gamers out of non gamers. It just didn't play out well for Wii U.

Nintendo is under new management now, however due to unfortunate circumstances. Now, it looks like Nintendo is working on a console that's power competitive (perhaps superior) to the point that it can at least run Unreal Engine 4.

It's a new day. With a new company head comes a new vision. Just ask Spencer. And shame on Mahler for assuming the worst.

Fin_The_Human3752d ago

Yeah but going by Nintendo's history with the Wii and Wii U to people really expect them to do a 180 and all of a sudden cater for the hardcore instead of focusing on gimmicks.

dcbronco3752d ago

Nintendo has always been price conscious. Now that consoles use APU the cost of the main two components, CPU and GPU are cut in half. Plus add the move to 14nm that they get to take advantage of from the start. GPUs didn't get to that size until now. The huge cost savings with the massive increase in power efficiency and architecture improvements allow Nintendo to step in now at profit day one plus a power advantage.

If Nintendo goes "cutting edge" on chips they can more than double power over current generation and launch on par on price or even at $300. Or they can use slightly older parts and launch at $250 or a little less and match their power. Nintendo is truly in a power position right now.

DarXyde3752d ago

Yes, actually.

Nintendo may be the one company that can truly reinvent themselves if you ask me. They've done as much with company philosophy, controllers, and independence time and again.

The Nintendo you criticize was Iwata's legacy. Great man with tons of vision, but this is not Iwata's Nintendo anymore. In appointing a new CEO, the company realizes they also need reform. They didn't choose someone who was just like him.

If anything, I would say NX will be more like the Super Nintendo or N64.

Have faith. They've been doing this for a while. The opting for a digital medium and powerful hardware is a testament to their shift in company vision.

Theyellowflash303752d ago

Nintendo made consoles before the Wii and Wii U.... LOL, that is not there whole history.

Fin_The_Human3751d ago

Oh trust me I grew up on Nintendo but my last console was the Game Cube which wasn't a bad console but I think thats where Nintendo started to drop its focus on the people who made them what they were.

I looking forward to see what this NX things is but don't be surprised if itbdoes not use traditional controllers and has some touch screen function.

I expect it to be some console hand held hybrid with mobile gaming as the selling point.

blawren43751d ago

I think "traditional" controllers are what is holding the industry back. We need something different or Nintendo is just a clone of the other two machines.

Fin_The_Human3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

Blawren - Valve did something different with the steam controller and trust me its nothing compared to traditional controllers.

If ain't broken then don't fix it...MS is a good example of what should be done as the elite controller is traditional but they have added a few things to improve upon it.

I am for innovation but it has been proven time and time again that stuff like Kinect, wiimote and move are all gimmicks.

This guy has gotten way too much attention.

MilkMan3752d ago

Maybe that was the ultimate goal in the end.

D2K3752d ago

Or the only one. It's not like his studio would not have gotten NX dev kits eventually. They would just have to wait a little while.

WeAreLegion3752d ago

“Former PlayStation guy supporting Nintendo against unprofessional rant gets tacit support from Microsoft guy.”

Haha. I love that line. Can't wait to see what Shahid is up to.

DivineAssault 3752d ago

Good.. Those dev kits are to be kept secret from everyone.. Indie devs that dont have a good relationship with nintendo might leak info about it or something.. Maybe later they can get one but for now, wait it out.. Im sure nintendos trusted dev studios have them and are making some killer IPs

rainslacker3752d ago

Historically, if you really go dig deep into it, leaks tend to come from smaller devs with less attachment to the industry than the bigger devs. This is likely due to the bigger devs often having a handler in interviews, so they don't inadvertantly say something they aren't supposed to. More often than not, the leaks aren't intentional or malicious, but picked up on by the interviewer, and an good interviewer can often get information that a person never intended to speak of. Obviously, devs get excited over working on new things, and human nature just makes people want to talk about such things.

It's not that I feel that these smaller devs do anything wrong or malicious or intentional, just that Nintendo, and other companies are aware of this kind of thing, so tend to protect their interests until the time is right.

In any case, where the NX is probably in development for the time being, there is little reason for most devs to have a dev kit. Even bigger ones. Without proper engine support, there is likely not much an indie dev would be able to do with it, which is why the big publishers and engine makers get first choice on getting the dev kits, because that is much more important to have those engines ready for after the reveal, and the bulk of indie devs are likely only to be doing ports anyways, which could be done rather quickly once the engines are updated.

ABizzel13752d ago

I agree about Engine, support, but at the same time, all of these console creators know exactly what kind of engine support they're aiming for and what developers are using to make their games on, so that's really a non-issue because Unreal & Unity support are pretty much required since most devs use those 2 engines.

rainslacker3751d ago

My point was was that without the engine having the support in it, there is nothing for these indie devs to really do with the dev kits. It's possible some could use Nintendo provided API's to create their game, but if they're adept enough to do so without an engine, then they won't have any problem adapting later.

This is why it's best to send the early dev kits and expected specs out to engine makers, so when the time comes, the engines can be ready for them.

ABizzel13752d ago (Edited 3752d ago )

My thing about leaking information is who cares.

I entirely get what Ahmad is saying, but that would have been a big deal if Nintendo was launching the NX at the same time as the PS4 and XBO, so the competition wouldn't be able to get a 1up over them, like Sony did with the PS4 over the XBO's hardware.

But Nintendo isn't launching a console against anyone. It's 3 years laters Sony and MS already have consoles out, and in their eyes Nintendo is not their direct competitor anymore so what is Nintendo gaining by being so secretive for. If Nintendo wants the NX to hit the ground running then they need to launch with quality hardware, a quality price, and most importantly quality games Day 1 and well into and beyond the launch window.

The rant from the Ori dev. was unprofessional, but the complaints were valid. Nintendo could at the very least give devs moch-up specs, so games can already be in the process of being made. And if they change so what, it's better and easier to scale a game up or down to modified hardware over a year, then to rush a game from scratch to launch with less than a year of dev time. And giving them moch-up specs ensures that there won't be a dry spell after the launch window as long as devs are willing to continue working on NX.

Being so secretive and relying on the big devs only means most of the launch games are going to be ports, or mediocre (ZombiU type games). Neither of which are a reason to buy a NX when PS4 / XBO will have those same port (with at least 45m PS4 / 25m...30m if they launch the slim, by holiday 2016).

Nintendo's needs to be speaking with the majority of Japanese developers ASAP, because JP support is one of the regions they can get any kind of 3rd party parity in, and if the NX can get Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, Street Fighter 6, Metal Gear, and more then they don't have anything to worry about when it comes to maximizing sales in JP.

The west; however, has proven multiple generations now that they don't really care about Nintendo if they're not making money (which I can understand). So instead of going after the same group of people who support you at launch which as fans claim are "inferior ports" then leave Nintendo out to die, go to these indies studios and pay them to make exclusives of your unused IP's (F-Zero, Mario RPG, Earthbound, etc...), historic IP's if you can get the license (Crusin' the World, Wave Race, etc..), and how a console with so many exclusives that it's a must have product.

Waiting on EA, Activision, Bethesda, Rockstar, and all the other big 3rd parties to get on board is a wasteful decision IMO, they haven't given 100% to Nintendo is over a decade. If you can prove that they can make money on the platform then they'll come back with full support instead of crappy launch support, and that best done by making sure JP games are successful from JP 3rd parties, and that indie devs can find success on your platform from recreating 1st party games, or their very own projects.

Ahmad is right in his presentation, but he forgets, the PS4's entire success came from the fact that Sony was so open about almost everything (waited a while for the online only and DRM stuff to ruin XBO). Every time they showed PS4 it was always demonstrated as pro-developer, easy to develop for, "PRO-INDIE", and pro gamer, and the PS4 took off like a rocket.

Nintendo needs to be doing the same thing. Developers and Your fans are the most important people to the success of your console, because developers are the ones making software to keep your console alive, and fans are the ones spending money to buy the hardware and software keeping your company alive.

Philface3752d ago (Edited 3752d ago )

Point is only because people do not see the reasons behind their action it doesn't mean that there aren't any. Besides we know nothing about the NX so it's hard to say at what point of development they are, so maybe there isn't much to say or show because they still try things out. But I have to admit that it is important that they have enough games at release.

DivineAssault 3752d ago

It might have features nintendo wants secret.. Its not just about specs but they like to innovate all the time and maybe they dont want the competition to replicate what theyre doing before the official reveal.. Who knows but the dev kits are out there with trusted teams

Dubaman3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

Before the N64 launched Nintendo released images of the controller, showing off it 'new' analog stick which of course were seen by SEGA. Who then created an analog controller for the Saturn to be used with the game Nights into Dreams. So although Nintendo created the analog, because of releasing information to soon it was technically SEGA who was first to market with.

Ever since then they've been cagey and super secretive, like when they announced the Revolution at E3 but didn't show of the wiimote until - if i remember correctly - TGS later in the year, to avoid a situation like with SEGA stealing some of it's thunder. Remember when the PS3 controller had gyroscopes and accelerometers forced into because of the wiimote and then of course the PSMove and Kinect happened. If Nintendos 'Revolution' controller had leaked at an earlier time, Sony and MS would have had more time to plan a strategy to compete at an earlier date - it could have completely ruined Nintendo.

Secrecy is not a bad thing especially when it's a multibillion dollar industry which has seen too many devs close its doors because of competiion. Amplify that to a company which does as much as Nintendo and the wrong decision at the wrong time will cost jobs and affect the industry like nothing before.

ABizzel13751d ago

@DivineAssaut

Again who cares what features it has, in regards to competition. The NX is releasing either 2016 or 2017, Sony and MS don't care what they do. And if copying Nintendo was their primary goal it wouldn't matter anyway since the PS5 / XB4 are releasing after NX.

I understand to an extent if the product isn't ready until 2017, but even then that's stupid, because they already know the budget they have, thus the price and performance range they're looking at.

How hard is it to tell developers to start making games spec'd to say: FX 4350 + HD 7850 (basically PS4). If the NX comes out holiday 2017, well then those devs have a full year to make their game, then several months from the full hardware reveal to optimize the game for launch.

The specs don't have to be finalized, but the low-end range is already established.

No one's saying give every detail of NX, but Nintendo should at the very least make sure as many worthwhile developers as possible are on board with NX, and working on games for it.

@Dubaman

And how many people cared Sega "did it first"?

Also it's 20 years later. Times have changed, the problem is Nintendo hasn't, and it's one of the many things they need to fix.

Is this game ever coming to consoles? My pc friends played it in early access over a year ago….

I do envy pc players sometimes because of the early access. For this game especially.

Anyway, consoles will get the definitive version in the end so all good.

Your Indie Game Just Sold 2 Million Copies… So Why Are You Still Broke?

Thomas Mahler: "Since it's quite bananas that a lot of players still do not understand the economy behind game development, I thought it'd be best to just break down a real example of a really successful first-time developer who managed to make a deal with a publisher. "

Terry_B368d ago

I wouldnt call a game that costs 10 million to make and had over 30 people from different companies working on it an indie game.

Seriously, no.

StoneTitan367d ago

its an independent studio that is not owned by any big studio or publisher. what else would you call them?

TheCaptainKuchiki366d ago (Edited 366d ago )

Indie means independant PLUS low budget.
Say I'm a billionnaire and decide to fund my own game with a $20M budget, is it an indie game just because I don't call a publisher? Dev costs increase yeah, but $10M is hardly indie

StoneTitan366d ago

@TheCaptainKuchiki I mean there is a word, independent, now look up what independent means.

https://dictionary.cambridg...

If you are a billionaire and fund your own game your game your studio is definately an independent studio xD
Thats what the word means.

TheColbertinator366d ago

Game development expenditures have exploded since the old days, Terry. Office space, hiring computer techs, game development equipment and art direction all have insane costs now.

Terry_B366d ago

Stardew Valley.

a game does not have to cost 10 millions or even 1 million..or even 100k to be successful

thorstein366d ago

Office space is cheap since so many people now work from home.

The only thing exploding is the price to the customer and the CEO's bank account.

TheColbertinator366d ago

Regardless the expenses are still there. If every indie studio had a success like Stardew Valley, they wouldn't be begging big time publishers, crowdfunders and investors to cover development costs. Alas most don't.

Santouryuu367d ago

I don't get it..
He starts with 10M cost for the game excluding marketing and continues to detract "other"costs...
Why are the costs of storefront, engine etc not included in the 10M?

thorstein367d ago (Edited 367d ago )

CEO makes CEO noises.

If he takes a 1 million dollar bonus every year the game is being made and the game took 5 years to be made, the "cost" isn't 10 million, it should be 5 million.

It's just more magical accounting. This industry is replete with it.

staticall367d ago (Edited 367d ago )

@Santouryuu
Yeah, it's weird. On top of that, he subtracts engine, tax from HIS own money, but this should be put on the publisher (or at least be split, 50%/50% or how they agree), because they're benefitting from the sales as well. On top of that, he makes it look like he didn't get a cent, but he (and his team) was paid the salary the whole way through, with bonuses and stuff. Probably rent for the office was taken care of as well and licenses/devices too.

And also, he acts like his games' average price was $10 (by the way, if the game cost $10 million, who decided to sell it for $20?! Sounds idiotic), which is ridiculous, popular indie games don't do 50% discount right after release and the most of the sales are done a few months after release (according to the publishers). As an example, look at Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Kenshi, they either didn't have 50% discount yet or had it years after the release.

Also, he acts like the game was only sold on Steam, but that's false. And Microsoft, i'm more than sure, didn't take 30% from them (because it's a game published by them on their platform).

The only thing this tells me is that someone is trying to manipulate us and you shouldn't work with Microsoft if you want to remain sane.

StoneTitan367d ago (Edited 367d ago )

because thats what he has to HAVE RIGHT NOW to develop the next game (engine, tax andso on)

Yes xbox of course did not have the 30% tax but then again he is just making a hypothetical, I am pretty sure their game did not sell exactely 20millions ^^

StoneTitan367d ago (Edited 367d ago )

Its not the cost of storefront. Your game made 20million but from those 20million the store takes 30%. Steam took 30% from the 20million you made. got it?
If you make 20million in sales Steam takes 6 million.
So you only get 14millions. Then you have to pay back what you owe the publisher, so 10millions in devcost and 2million in marketing.
So you are left with 2millions.
From the 2millions of pure profit 70% goes to the publisher and 30% to the developer (depending on your contract)
So you are left with 600k to pay for your next game, for now.
lots of numbers but very clearly put

franwex366d ago

Where did those $10 million go though? It’s a loan basically, but didn’t those pay through the development? Essentially the developer got paid $10 million upfront to make a game. If the game didn’t hit $12 million in sales-say $8 million. The publisher lost that money. The developer still got $10 million. Sure, maybe their next game may not be funded-but they wouldn’t have to come up with the $4 million missing. That’s a loss from the publisher.

StoneTitan365d ago

absolutely correct.
He is pointing out the fact that even IF you have a hit game that sells 2million dollars. Does not mean you can pay for the next project.

Ori Dev Pushes Back on No Rest for the Wicked Review Bombing

Thomas Mahler warned that unfair review bombing could harm the studio’s future but later clarified it's not in immediate danger of closing.

Levii_92388d ago (Edited 388d ago )

I really, really hope that this amazing studio will eventually give us one last Ori game, it can be a prequel. Will of the Wisps is one of my favourite games of all time but as for their new game ehhhh.. let’s just say i have zero interest in it but they seem very passionate about it so i hope this review bombing doesn’t affect the studio’s future.

PhillyDonJawn388d ago (Edited 388d ago )

It doesn't even have to be an Ori game it can just be similar. I want them to make a side stroller combat game. Kinda like super smash bros but with ori playstyle

Michiel1989388d ago

if you like arpgs, but wasn't a big fan of screenclearing attacks, this is a really fun game. It's sort of diablo meets dark souls.

jznrpg386d ago

I personally got bored of Ori after a while. The pinballing got old for me.

HyperMoused388d ago

This is a great game, i dont think its fully released yet, but it has a heap of content if you want to get stuck in

BABI-PANGPANG388d ago

I don’t get the criticism at all. From the visuals to the story, music, voice acting, and gameplay, it’s incredible on every level. Sure, some parts aren’t perfectly balanced yet and there are a few glitches, but the game isn’t even fully released. I’ve put around 80 hours into The Breach update already (300 or so in total), and I still can’t get enough.

Christopher387d ago

Majority of the criticism is on the time-gating they utilize in the game that makes it feel like a mobile game. I think his making it out to be just people who leave a thumbs down review without effort isn't really why people are leaving bad reviews. If you read through them, they really hate having timers on so much considering building them in the first place requires you to collect materials to make them, which should be the 'time' you spend and not just waiting for it to finish being constructed.

HyperMoused386d ago

Lots of games have timing on cosntruction
