After a decade of powering some of Telltale’s most memorable titles, the Telltale Tool Engine is in serious need of a tune-up.

Here's hoping. It'd stink to see the upcoming Batman game gimped by an ancient framework.

As long as they keep the cel-shaded art style, I don't mind. It would be a real shame if they abandoned that for a boring realistic look.

Actually, I don't see why they wouldn't use Unity. It already supports every platform imaginable. Or a modified UE4 that supports toon shading. Or Source 2, which will hopefully be released at GDC 2016

A complete engine overhaul is about the only thing Telltale could do to peak my interest for another one of these games.

Hoffmann3745d ago

The gameplay and story matters the most in those games, but yeah..a new engine would be nice already.

I'd prefer they work on their animations. Engine could use an overhaul sure, but the animations in their games are always so stiff, and it seems they have to reset to the first key-frame instead of blending, which makes every line of dialogue rather awkward to watch because it's so disjointed when a character stops talking and their facial expression goes back to "wide eyed arched eyebrows M/B/P(look it up) mouth position" mode. Having better animations could open up their stories to have more dynamics, instead of everything being done in close up mode.

Yes please. I'm usually the last person to care about gameplay over story/characters but I'm so sick of the terrible animations in TT games. And please stop making everything cel shaded. Although that's more of a personal gripe because I hate cel shading. I'll be happy with a new engine regardless.

I don't feel it necessary for their Walking Dead games. Those games are about the narrative, in a comic style. The games are QTE and I have a load of fun with them.

Not entirely sure how developing a new engine would help.

tanukisuit3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

The problem isn't the QTE or narrative style...
Based on the recent Game of Thrones, it had a lot of jittering, and pop-ins. It happens in some of their older games, but it's really apparent in G.O.T.

dead_pixels3745d ago

That's addressed in the article. Many of their newer games are overhwlemed with technical hiccups due to the engine they're built around. These issues directly impact the QTE's, making them feel less engaging than they should. Hiccups, slowdown and overall choppiness have become the norm, and an overhauled engine would be the best remedy.

Amazon Prime members can get over 40 Steam Deck-compatible games for free right now

42 Steam Deck-compatible games that you can get for free right now, but you'll need an active Amazon Prime subscription for most of them.

Inverno615d ago

I've noticed when I was still paying for Prime that those supposed free games they give through Epic are just free games epic gives without the need of Prime. Rugrats is in the list in the article and it's available to get without Prime so that's pretty shady on Amazon's part, or maybe it's Epic being scummy.

Tales from the Borderlands (the original, good one), Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Borderlands the pre-sequel, Borderlands 2, Loop Hero, Trek to Yomi, Greedfall, Shadow of Mordor, Hard West 2, Figment 2. Some great gets there.

Amazon never give steam codes away so the steam deck link here is silly unless you are modding and installing epic launcher.

Kyizen615d ago

Yeah I get a ton of free games on epic, It works but having to launch the Epic browser and games though it is pain vs just using the Steam deck OS. Once the game is running no issue though,

FinalFantasyFanatic615d ago

They give away quite a few GOG versions of games though, I suppose you can just slap those onto your Steam Deck (I've done this), although it's not always ideal.

You can but it’s a pain to launch them and doesn’t it require installing windows?

FinalFantasyFanatic613d ago

You don't need windows, personally, I just download it on PC, then transfer it to the Steamdeck via network sharing or USB stick. Then you add it to the Steamdeck as a "non-steam game" like you would if you were using a PC. The only downside is if you play the game on both PC and Steamdeck, you'll have to manually transfer save files.

Supposedly you can use Hero launcher or something, but I can't seem to get the games to work after download it via GOG on Steamdeck. So manually transfer it is for me.

Sadly, this is Deja vu, with Telltale going through this type of thing before in 2018 - thoughts are with those affected. Games companies and all sectors always follow each other, with the bad press reducing as each new announcement is made - sad times we live in.
