Where Virtual Reality's Going in 2016

BNR: Virtual reality is exploding- some have declared 2016 to be the Year of VR- others still think that it's a fad that'll be dead in the next six months. Virtual reality is expensive, disruptive, and has a lot of potential- for good and for bad. What can we expect from virtual reality in 2016, both in terms of technology and video games? We've got that covered on the latest episode of The Blackman 'N Robin Irregular Game Show.

We like our consoles........VR is going to be taking up our developers time instead of working on the next big console hit. My dreams came true with the Wii and Kinect though. They "Gimmicked" themselves right out the door, which I'm more than happy with.

When are companies going to figure out that we like our consoles the way they are. Could you imagine my friends trying to watch me play VR........how does that even work? Would it play on my tv at the same time? Even then, to them it would just look like a first person game anyways, nothing new there. I think it also wouldn't be popular on Twitch or You Tube either.

Honostly though, Samsung is giving away there VR if you pre order a Galaxy S7. I know it probably wouldn't hold a candle to the others.....but free?

Exactly, it's just a gimmick.
A stupidly expensive gimmick at that.

I can't even wear headphones for that long while gaming, wearing a bloody screen on my face?
No way that's happening.

But as you said, VR is going to start taking up developers time to make games VR compatible. Current state of gaming, games often come out buggy as it is, now more of devs time will be taken with trying to get VR to work.

Going to be an 'interesting' next few years for games...

Having tried VR? I respectfully disagree. It certainly *can* be used in a gimmicky way, sure- but it changes your perspective on a game- it's a new medium, and we're going to see some interesting things come out of it.

I dunno about you guys, but this generation has me bored and disillusioned with the state of modern gaming. It's the exact same that it's been for the better part of a decade with a nicer looking coat of paint.

VR is the first shake up this industry has had since mobile took off in 2007.

"When are companies going to figure out that we like our consoles the way they are."

So you'd rather everyone just continue to do things the way they've been done for 30+ years?

Screw that. A lot of people are ready for some real innovation for once.

esmittystud1013728d ago

Dude, are you one of those guys that boycotted all of 2015 game hits? 2015 alone can give someone two years of good gaming. Where have you been? Did you just not like anything in 2015 gaming wise?

Pandamobile3728d ago

I haven't boycotted anything out of spite or anything like that, it's just that I can't think of a single game in 2015 that kept my interest for more than a couple hours (besides Rocket League).

I'm hungry for something new, not just rehashing the same tried and tested, formulaic game design patterns that we've become accustomed to.

esmittystud1013727d ago (Edited 3727d ago )

So you liked Rocket League. But you passed on:

- The Witcher 3
- Bloodborne
- Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
- CoD: Black Ops 3
- Dying Light
- Just Cause 3
- Life Is Strange
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- Rise of The Tomb Raider
- The Order: 1886

These are just the ones I picked up. It probably helps that I didn't own a PS3, so all those series are a first for me. Its cool if Rocket League is all you like. I got if free on PS+, maybe played it twice. But me and you are just two totally different kind of gamers, which is fine, LOL.

Psvr plays to your TV as well just like you say. And even if it does look just like a normal first person game to everyone else, it won't make any difference to them then. It won't impact them negatively. And have you not seen all the major games coming this year?? If VR was really taking up all the time away from devs you say it is then we wouldn't be getting all the awesome games that are due out this year. You also don't represent all console gamers so enough of the "we like our consoles the way they are" business. Many people have dreamed of VR for games for a long time. Finally it's becoming a possibility!

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2128d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
