GC 2008: Xbox 360 Controller Redesigned

IGN writes:

"A subtly redesigned Xbox 360 controller has been spotted on the showroom floor at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, sporting a new-feel d-pad that addresses the previously unresponsive and spongy model.

While aesthetically identical to the previous controller, the d-pad has been re-engineered to offer more instant control, with an eight way input taking place of the previous four. A brief hands-on with the controller playing Pro Evolution 2009 proved that the redesign has been effective, with the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile.

It's expected to release at the same time as this year's Pro Evolution Soccer, and the re-design is thought to have been inspired by the imminent release of Street Fighter IV.

We'll have photos of the new controller - though don't expect to see the difference - and further impressions later on. "

Will these be sent out as replacements for free?

sonarus6466d ago

Well this is great...for everyone who likes to play with D pad. But as for PES, it was designed with that ps2 controller which is coincidentally the PS3 controller. So i will still rather play it on my PS3 controller but it does make it a lot easier to use the d pad (which was worthless before)

For a game like street fighter though it might be better. I tried playing SF alpha on PS3 pad i was having a lot of trouble doing hadookens and stuff

gaffyh6466d ago

I still think the PS controller has the best D-pad, I have hated the circular D-pad style since my Sega Master System (which the D-PAD used to fall off, which I'm glad doesn't happen on my 360 controller). I'm not going to go and buy another controller now, MS should have thought of this from the beginning.

sonarus6466d ago

this is basically the same situation with sony rolling out dualshock 3 late.

But an advanced d pad isn't really necessary for all games. PES is the only soccer game that plays with d pad, I usually play racers with d pad and fighters as well. Other than that its not really necessary

InMyOpinion6466d ago

Were the rumble controllers for the PS3 sent out for free?

sak5006466d ago

Yes just like DS3 were sent out by sony. Atleast its just a subtle change unlike lack of rumble and then making a totally new controller to replace sixaxis.

Sitdown6466d ago

Bubbles with regards to presenting yourself as unbiased. You said that you prefer the ps3 controller for PES because of its roots with the ps2 controller.......but was also able to say how you do have problems with regards to Street Fighter

thereapersson6465d ago

I think he was saying this because people got on Sony's case for rolling out Rumble late and then not providing a replacement plan for the old sixaxis controllers. If this new controller becomes the standard, it will be the same situation, so MS has no reason to get a free pass.

BTW, to anyone who says that a d-pad isn't crucial like rumble is, please proceed to pull your head out of your ass. Rumble is NOT a crucial feature in a game, unlike some people would like to think. However, a D-Pad is a crucial part of the controller, and actually serves an important purpose. Just stand back and think why MS is redesigning this in the first place; the fact that many people have complained numerous times about the "sponginess" of the current D-Pad is reason enough for MS to satisfy their customers.

After all, it's not like they moved the analog sticks around, or changed the face buttons...

ceedubya96465d ago

Microsoft didn't HAVE to replace anything. The 360 controller as it is worked fine. The D-Pad was a little wonky at times, but it worked in most cases. IMO, the only Dpads that were actually good were last seen on the SNES. The PS pads were serviceable, but far from perfect.

I'm glad that Micro is finally addressing this though. It will definitely make pulling off Street Fighter 4s moves easier if I play it on the 360.

thereapersson6465d ago

Just like it's my opinion that I didn't mind the sixaxis controller. However, you and I both know that people have complained in both cases, so there are obviously consumers who would like to see a change. Both Sony and MS are at least catering to their consumers' needs.

Buying a brand new controller for just 1 new button?????? ahhahhhaahahahhaah, I don't think so morons. They better cost half price, all I gots to say.

Freckler6466d ago

Jenzo that was simple, but very effective.

AngryTypingGuy6465d ago

Siligon, I doubt you'll see a huge marketing campaign where they want everyone to go out and replace their controllers for such a subtle difference. They will just gradually take the place of the old ones on store shelves, that's all.

I'm glad they improved the D-pad. It was the only imperfection on the controller.

StephanieBBB6466d ago

And replacing it with bluetooth?

spandexxking6466d ago (Edited 6466d ago )

the battery drive? you make no sense! if you mean get rid of the battery compartment for an internal, i agree, i love the feel of the wired controller but hate the wires.

Jeremy Gerard6466d ago

my brother has a PS3 and the bluetooth controllers randomly drop out and he loses control in the middle of gaming, the 360 controllers are fine. Besides, I have a harmony remote that controls my entire entertainment system, if 360 were blutooth, it would not work, just like remotes dont work with PS3, lame.

jmare6466d ago

Wow then your brother must be one unlucky bastard, because I've never had one lose sync or anyone else's either. It could just be interference in the environment.

Mr_Bun6466d ago (Edited 6466d ago )

I don't believe you, and to say "blutooth sux" is to say that having a headset wired to your controller looks "cool".

On topic: I am glad that they have redisigned the D-pad so that you don't have to mod it yourself anymore.

StephanieBBB6466d ago (Edited 6466d ago )

spandexxking

The controller is battery driven right? Therefor I said battery drive. You got what I said so why would it make no sence?

Jeremy Gerard

umm ok? never heard of that problem. I have 3 controllers and none of them have ever done that. Sure it happens when they run out of power but not otherwise.

So your telling me that you would rather have the fuzz to pay or recharge batteries for your controller than to put a wire in it for 10 minutes and then play? Have you even played on a PS3?

Jeremy Gerard6466d ago

Have the fuzz wtf does that mean?

But yes I would rather pop out one set of rechargeable batts and pop in another set and keep playing, instead of having to stop playing wait for the controller to charge and then restart.

The 360 is just better designed when it comes to user freindly features folks, no doubt about that. PS3 seems to have been laid out by a complete idiot, what is with the charge cable being like 12 inches? and whats with having to have the console on to charge the controllers, that is the most moronic thing I have ever seen.

Freckler6466d ago (Edited 6466d ago )

The 360 controller already has a longer battery life than ps3's controllers. There is no need to change that. And what is this mythical fuzz that you are trying to produce from your troll bag?

shine13966466d ago

you'd rather stop playing to change batteries? upto you I suppose. I've got 3 ps3 bluetooth control pads, one dualshock three, keyboard and mouse, and haven't had out of sync or whatever. FYI, you can just play on whilst with the wires on, so charging while you play...

spandexxking6466d ago

ummm... because you said take out the battery 'drive' and replace it with bluetooth. It makes no sense. Thats why i couldn't understand.

n4gzz6465d ago

Jeremy, You don't have stop playing to charge ps3 controller. You can keep charging and play at the same time and You don't have to have console on when not playing to charge. I use PC to charge my ps3 controller. Since my pc is always on so it just fits perfectly for me. I know some people don't have pc but people who have ps3 they usually have pc too. Since ps3 gamers are usually grown up adults.

The existing D-Pad on the 360 controllers sucks big time. Glad to see they did something about it.

dachiefsman6466d ago

it does suck but using a quick mod it can be easily fixed.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde12d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy12d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
