Microsoft Taking Its Time With HoloLens to Avoid Kinect Situation

"If you're wondering why you haven't been able to get your hands on a HoloLens, it's because Microsoft is taking its time to make sure it's a product you'll find useful. The company wants to avoid another situation like the Kinect's when it launched on Xbox 360."By Mat Paget

yeah just like kinect, HoloLens probably to extend the life of their xbox

parentoftheyear3733d ago

I dont think we are anywhere close to it releasing. Def not on xb1. The experience just isnt there. The current build now has just a tiny viewing area, nothing like the demos show. I for one am excited about hololens, because I think this tech will be a vr killer when it is a complete full Hologram experience. We are easily 10+ years away from that.

Cueil3733d ago

it's a stand alone computer so I'm not sure how it would be made to extend the life of the Xbox One unless they can sync up and allow extended display or take off UI from the game an out into your playing room

stuna13733d ago

It won't kill VR! If anything, they'll both Co-exist. Two totally different technologies that who knows may end up enhancing one another.

Wallstreet373734d ago (Edited 3734d ago )

Yeahhhhhhh righttttttt we believe you /s

joeorc3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

This is the real reason its still not cheap enough for retail distribution.
As he stated this

"When I feel the world is ready, then we will allow normal people to buy it," Kipman said in Vancouver. "It could be as soon as we say 'yes,' and it could be as long as a 'very long time.'"

Now Note this:

"The Development Edition will launch in 2016 with a price tag of $3,000."

http://www.wareable.com/hea...

Last month, developer edition is several grand!

TheCommentator3733d ago

Yeah, exactly... and at $3000 right now, I doubt that it's being used to extend the life of the Xbox as some would suggest. The first iterations are going to be business related but as the tech evolves over time, and gets cheaper, we'll see more mainstream applications involving consumer-level benefits such as gaming.

jb2273733d ago

I think it'll have uses w/ the Xbox over time, but I see a lot more gaming usage applied outside of households. I would picture large paintball type arenas set up for HoloLens Halo matches, or indoor rock climbing walls set up w/ stuff like Crytek's The Climb. Unless they find a way to make some convincing overlays, I just don't see much appeal in playing my games library inside of the same room I see in actual reality everyday. Long story short there are obvious gaming applications but like you said, they are far off & they don't stop and start behind your personal living room Xbox system.

Goldby3733d ago

worst thing they could hvae done was show off games for it, specially Mincraft as it wont be working they way they showed in the Adverts for it. Mincraft will not apprear above and below the same table, it will only appear on the surface of the table..

Damn that looks wonderful, well done hololens and Google tango. I must say AR certainly is looking more impressive that VR and I reckon I'd choose AR over VR the way it's going.

Especially now it looks like world of tanks devs are in on AR, that game will be ace to play.

E3 2017 Shows VR Is Not Ready

GameRaven.com writes:

''Virtual reality still remains something of a niche market. Be it the Vive, Oculus Rift or Sony headset, their application in video games has left much to be desired. The last two E3’s have featured VR titles and experiences on the main stage.''

I saw plenty of good looking vr titles. Bethesda had two of them, couple of interesting ones for PSVR and Sony has said they will be promoting more soon.

darthv723246d ago

VR this year reminded me of the Vita landscape not too long ago. Sony gave stage space to Vita and look how that turned out. Them giving stage space to VR is obviously good but they need to get the price down to where more people can buy it and take advantage of these experiences.

I enjoyed the vita and I enjoy VR but both are secondary after thoughts in Sony's eye as opposed to fully fleshed out ventures they really want people to get behind. VR (as with vita) will be mostly supported by indies and Ryan's remarks about indies is a little unsettling.

Genuine-User3246d ago (Edited 3246d ago )

I'm confused by your logic. Vita wasn't as successful therefore VR might go down the same road?

Sharing a stage has absolutely no relevance.

If anything, this E3 confirmed that VR isn't an after thought for Sony. You're making up a lot here aren't you.

And as for Ryan, read the interview. What he said isn't unsettling lol.

fr0sty3246d ago

Every time I look in the PS Store (about once a month, I don't have much time for gaming these days), I see new PSVR games that look really awesome. I've got a wish list of about 6 titles out already with several more that are coming out soon. I'm surprised by how well they are supporting it.

OB1Biker3246d ago (Edited 3246d ago )

Enough with the Vita comparisons. PSVR has nothing to do with a handheld dominated by Nintendo

Genuine-User3246d ago (Edited 3246d ago )

If anything, E3 showcased why VR is more than tempting. I'm going buy PSVR within a few months.

Gazondaily3246d ago (Edited 3246d ago )

How did it showcase that? Name me one killer app. Or 3 games that make picking up a PSVR worth it.

GrubsterBeater3246d ago (Edited 3246d ago )

I'm getting my PS VR bundle tomorrow along with the Farpoint bundle that includes the VR Aim Controller. So excited.

Genuine-User3246d ago

@Septic
I don't know about you but I would love to play Moss, Doom VR and The Inpatient.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3246d ago

@Septic

Resident Evil VR
Batman VR
Farpoint
Dirt Rally VR
London Heist
Ocean Descent

Upcoming:
GT Sport
Skyrim VR
Fallout VR
DOOM VR

PSVR works. You just have to experience it for yourself before trying to downplay it.

gangsta_red3246d ago

So basically no killer apps.

@Igive
"Skyrim VR, Fallout VR, DOOM VR"

So the same games but with an added gimmick? It's strange to see some people add Skyrim on to lists of games to play in VR but were vocally mad to see this old game ported to Switch.

OB1Biker3246d ago (Edited 3246d ago )

@Gangsta
They aren't the same games. Doom VR is confirmed to be completely new game.
I don't know why people seem so misinformed. The few titles named here are only the tip of the iceberg. Follow VR focused sites and you all see there's plenty of support.

Phoenix763246d ago

@igivehugs

You forgot Star trek bridge crew

admiralvic3246d ago

I might be in the minority, but after playing with a PlayStation VR at E3, I was underwhelmed. Admittedly, the only game I played was Moss, but it left a distinct impression on me.

While I thought Moss was a fantastic game and would LOVE to support it, the way I've been explaining it to people is Tearaway with VR. You have this deeper connection because you're able to look around and view this world from every angle, but I would be hard pressed to say that connection is worth an additional $300+.

Going back to Moss, it could totally, at least from what I saw at E3, work as a normal PlayStation game. It's a third person platformer puzzle game with some motion controls.

Don't get me wrong, I could see the potential or value, but I currently think the cost vastly outweighs the cost, which is a shame, since I really did enjoy Moss.

The playstation E3 VR presence it seems that Sony is prepared to continue being the premiere VR device.

The quality involved in those VR games during there E3 show was incredible in terms of graphical fidelity, variety, and immersion with PS VR.

gangsta_red3246d ago

Final Fantasy Fishing had me sold!

InKnight7s3246d ago

Makes no sense, vr one off most expensive and gpu like prices but still being sell good and skyrim, Fallout is good thing because both have really large world. I mean this add on device have support more than Wii U life cycle.

bluefox7553246d ago

Tech has to start somewhere, new tech is rarely considered "ready" in it's infancy, that doesn't mean we should scrap it.

Wallstreet373246d ago

Vr I knew was ready when I played "Rush of Blood" and loved it!!!! Rigs is also a good game as is the platform that comes free with all the vr mini games. My next adventure is Star Trek Bridge Crew with everyone seems to love and play it for hours on streams :)

Phoenix763246d ago

Yep star trek bridge crew is bloody fantastic. Played 6hrs other day with player on psvr, Vive and rift at same time. If u can get a good team together, it can be a real experience. Just hold off from doing 1960's bridge till u finish game lol

This is very cool but maybe he should try not playing it over a window.

Sureshot3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

You can't, this game is exclusive to Windows

Ba dum tsh!

denawayne3405d ago

The pets he had we're cool (tiger at 39:47). Yeah they don't do anything but I see the potential. I think a shark or whale would be cool swimming around your house. Or an AI robot to chat with. Maybe the AI keeps you up to date on news, scores, etc. Or it could be your buddy as a avatar.

Lennoxb633405d ago

Yea I think it would be cool if the pets actually react to what goes on in game. Like getting an achievement or getting a headshot. Maybe they'll jump around or do back flips and stuff.

ShadowKnight3406d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Looks cool but don't know if I would play games like this. Great for other applications and features though and probably expensive.

BizarroUltraman3406d ago

This is pretty cool. Hololens is pretty impressive. It had like 6 other pages open, and the playing Gears 4.

ApocalypseShadow3406d ago

You got to admit that this is awesome. Improve the FOV and battery life and you got a winner. Only thing better would be if they had the enemies you were shooting at in the same room with you and coming out your walls.

AR and VR is getting more awesome. The guy does say it's better than looking at it in VR cinema screen. That may be true. But I think Gears VR would be better than an AR screen. Something like this early steam demo
https://m.youtube.com/watch...
But with chainsaws, big guns, etc. It's different when you would be looking at a locust horde in the face. It's like seeing killer croc the first time in Batman VR.
https://m.youtube.com/watch...
Locusts would be just as menacing.

darthv723405d ago

Whoa... that is pretty neat. It seems a bit distracting though with all the background stuff but otherwise very cool.
