Is Beating a Game Really That Important?

You can't judge a book by its cover, but you can judge it by its introduction and first chapter.

If I dont beat a game it feels like I failed...

Heyxyz3762d ago

I agree, and I beat every game I buy. If I don't beat the game I not only feel like I wasted my money, but I also psychologically feel like I "failed" which makes me miserable. If I don't complete a game (which only really happens with old games I played before I started completing every game), every time I see said game I feel this immense despair. In short, I definitely feel the need to complete every game I have.

With that being said, that's me. By no means do I expect everybody else to conform to my standard.

I disagree with you snobs. Almost all games are associated with repetition. Unless it's really story driven or unique I don't see finishing every game necessary.

That is an element that makes gaming different. You can't really watch a movie, read a book, or listen to part-way because there's a narrative to it. Most video games don't focus on the narrative. It's about the mechanics and design. You don't need to play a game from start and finish to experience experience the mechanics and design. You may say the design and mechanics evolve, but in most cases a game is not that different at the end.

Seraphim3762d ago

No doubt. You don't play games to only enjoy or play part of it. You sit down and spend that time with them to experience, enjoy, play, have fun, accomplish, etc, all of it. Granted some games just aren't that good or I lose my interest in (sand box) but if I'm going to sit down and play a game I'm going to finish it. If it's that bad or I've lost interest I don't feel I've failed, the developer has but if I quit for any other reason, indeed, I have failed.

Personally I don't see how gamers can spend all this money on games and not finish them. I have a friend how buys tons of games, plays tons of games but he finishes maybe 1 in 100. Why pay $60 for a game you're going to play for a few nights, a week, and only play 20-50% of? I'm all for a challenge and often play on Hard+ but if Normal is too difficult and you don't find yourself finishing games do yourself a favor and start playing games on Cheasy so you can at least experience the whole campaign.

Sciurus_vulgaris3762d ago

I used to beat every game I purchased. Now I only finish games if I like the story or gameplay.

Fist4achin3762d ago

I am in full agreement with you on this. If the story captivates me, I'm in to the finish line. If it's mediocre and just fluffed up and just gets too repetitive to add hours, I get bored. There's too many games coming out and my backlog is too big to mess around for too long on a grindfest. It's a little different with Rpgs where you need to build up characters to do well on a bigger enemy.

MeteorPanda3762d ago

okay...why is tifa being posted up in a lot of articles now? l've seen her 3 times this week in provocative poses...like ease up you goddamn weirdos, she's not real.

MeteorPanda3762d ago

how am l going to argue with a dp and name like that?

Lon3wolf3762d ago

Next you'll be telling me Santa's not real.

YoungKingDoran3762d ago (Edited 3762d ago )

I'd like to say no because my backlog is so god damn huge spanning many systems... but I would be lying to myself and you.
I occasionally think of a random game i got 3/4s through and then inexplicably moved onto another game, never getting back to finishing it.
10 year old Doran would be ashamed (getting a new game was rare) and i worry what this all says about the type of person i am lol

I’d love to know how many units have been sold of all the Final Fantasy VII franchise games, including the original, the remakes, spin offs such as Crisis Core, and mobile games Ever Crisis. I bet a fair few copies.

TheDreamCorridor105d ago

Modern day publisher be like: "Failed to meet sales expectations. Pivoting to live service."

aaronlif10105d ago

It's an absolute legend of a game. And I honestly really love how the remake trilogy is shaping up so far.

If you already own it... There, I saved you the click on a deliberately misleading article.

DivineHand125129d ago

I bought the game yesterday on steam for $4 because Square Enix is trying to replace it with a version that has no mod support.

Prior to yesterday, I had no idea the game had so many great mods until people started making a fuss out of it.

Knightofelemia129d ago

I wish Square would port other old games to newer systems I want Xenogears.

gold_drake128d ago

You can thank FF7 scaring Baldur's Gate 2's director 'S***less' for every RPG since

But BG2 didn't emerge in a vacuum, and in a recent chat with Slandered Gaming it emerged that—while we can thank BG2 for a lot of our favourite RPGs since—we have a whole other game to thank for BG2. That'd be Final Fantasy 7, which lit a fire under BG2 director James Ohlen to go all out with the game's structure and companions, per Trent Oster—who worked on the original Baldur's Gate and has since become CEO of Beamdog, the studio behind the BG1 and BG2 Enhanced Editions.
