PS4 Slim: Myth or Reality?

PS4Home: "Finally, with PlayStation VR releasing this year and a certain distraction for Sony, it could be 2017 when we might see a slim edition; that’s a definite possibility."

Knightofelemia3750d ago

Bring on the PS4 slim just waiting for it.

traumadisaster3748d ago

skip the article, useless dribble. Comment if you like cause the article is 3rd grade.

indysurfn3748d ago (Edited 3748d ago )

I agree because there attack was: People use the PS3 having a slim in 2009 as a pattern. Then they attacked it. Last time I check this started WAY before PS3!

PS1 had a slim....PS2 had a slim....THEN PS3 had a slim THAT is what made a pattern.

Then the companies want more people to be able to afford the console so they can sell them games for it!
Hince a xbox slim, PS1, ps2, ps2 and coming soon PS4 slim!

Nintendo has not had to do it lately simply because they have not put hot running tech in their machines (they may change back to doing that after they release NX if AMD's graphic hints are true, and the super small manufacturing form is NOT true).

Obviously their will be a slim PS4 and a slim Xbox one.

ravinash3747d ago

It makes sense that after a few years when technology has improved, that they redevelop the same amount of processing power into smaller and more efficient chips and then re-design the console to produce it at a cheaper price.
And unlike a lot of other industries, the cost cutting is actually passed on to the customer (mostly).

indysurfn3748d ago

Yes it is but Some people cant afford it yet. I got mine, but I'm all for it getting cheaper for people that have not been able to justify it yet.

rainslacker3747d ago

not sure how much they'd save by making the case smaller. It's pretty small as it is, and economies of scale dictate it would be minimal savings, if any. There may be some savings on the distribution end though.

Internals could get smaller without changing the case form factor, and the internals have already been updated to smaller and fewer components(through integration/redundancy).

We'll probably see a Slim eventually though. The thing could likely get to be about half the size it is now, so about as big as a WiiU. It could go smaller as well, but I think there's a point where it just doesn't make a difference. You can probably assume it will have to be at least the size of a BR-Drive, and maybe twice as thick to be the smallest it could go.

lipton1013748d ago

The ps4 is already pretty damn slim. I'm guessing you already have a ps4, no? If yes, then why the hell would you buy ANOTHER ps4 if there's nothing different about it other than its size? Why not use that money on an X1 or Wii U?

GHOSTxx4203748d ago

Isnt it small enough already?? We need a slim xbox one instead..

pompombrum3748d ago

With everything going on under the hood, how can they possibly make it any slimmer without risking overheating problems? Not to mention having an inbuilt power pack (take note MS/Nintendo) while still maintaining it's current small size, I'd say their engineers would really have outdone themselves if they can come up with a PS4 Slim.

traumadisaster3748d ago

please don't mention the power brick, cause we both know the brick is behind the tv with all the other wires AND IS NOT A BIG DEAL.

pompombrum3748d ago (Edited 3748d ago )

If you travel a fair bit and like to take your console with you, it can be a bit of a pain but no it's not a big deal but lets not pretend that it's not impressive that Sony can keep their console the small size that it is without actually even needing that power brick.

bradleejones3748d ago

And what exactly is the redeeming feature of the power brick. I mean besides when the brick falls and yanks the machine off the stand. I can't seem to think of any redeeming quality...

djplonker3748d ago (Edited 3748d ago )

@trauma

TYPE IN CAPS ALL YOU WANT BUT IT'S ONLY YOUR OPINION

It is a big deal when you factor in the size of the xbox one.

(wiiu is small enough to justify one)

ratchet4263748d ago

As others have pointed out, it's not the size of the brick, but the fact that as large as the X1 physically is, they STILL needed an external power brick. Just goes to the hardware engineering prowess of each company. Sony knows how to design compact, efficient consumer electronics. Microsoft, not so much.

nitus103748d ago (Edited 3748d ago )

For you maybe, but for myself who does move my PS4 allot a power brick would be a hindrance.

I can understand a power brick for devices such as laptops since they are normally very slim and putting a a power supply in them would make then thicker or more expensive.

Having a power brick for a laptop is still a hindrance especially if you are on the go although to get around this all laptops have batteries. I better not get started on batteries my reply would be longer then it already is.

From a design point of view using a power brick for the XB1 would be a conservative none technical management decision not an engineering one.

I think it mostly depends on AMD. If they can mass produce a smaller APU (smaller than 28nm that is) and yields and reliability are high enough for Sony, they might be able to design a PS4 slim.
After that it's all about return on investment for Sony. Production/transport/strorage costs will drop so the timing has to be right.
My best guess for a PS4 slim is either september 2016 or september 2017. Right before the holiday season is the best time to introduce a slim console.

rainslacker3747d ago

System already runs cooler with newer models due to reduction in APU size. There is actually a lot of empty space on the main board. As the power requirements go down with new APU form factors, the power supply could be made smaller, which would produce less heat as well.

All depends on advances and changes to the die of the APU, and it's power requirements. In theory, it could run cool enough to not require such a robust fan and ventilation system, which could drop the size down significantly, since that is what takes up most of the space right now.

BarneyS3747d ago (Edited 3747d ago )

The cuh1200 runs cooler, yes. But that is not because of a smaller APU. Digital foundry writes in their review that it is the same 28nm APU used in earlier PS4 models.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

A smaller APU is key to make the PS4 smaller because it is the main producer of heat. Obviously when they take out the power supply they could make it a lot smaller.

Edit: Actually, according to digital foundry the older version ran cooler than the new one but the new one makes less noise.

rainslacker3747d ago

If not smaller, it does run cooler, which means it uses less power, which is where the heat is generated. Could be other chips which add to the heat are not adding more to the power consumption, thus lowering the overall heat index within the system. Or, maybe they just improved the cooling system.:)

However, yes, an APU's size will directly affect it's heat output. There is actually a formula for determining the heat generation per watt, per transistor, but don't care to look it up.

level 3603748d ago

PS4's already slim as it is but fact there is a competition going on with Microsoft, for sure if a slim/XBox ONE 2.0 ver. comes out expect Sony to build one as well.
It's only a matter of time plus factor in smaller, powerful computer chips and other improving hardware.

rev 1 released few months ago
CUH-1200 the PS4 with matte HDD cover
Lower power consumption and heat

sprinterboy3748d ago

Agreed,but

You know what i meant

nitus103748d ago

My PS4 model is CUH-1202A and even when playing a game it only consumes 80W of power.

The top of the case does get warm over time but not uncomfortably so and there is very little fan noise. In fact I can't hear the fan at all unless I put my ear to the console and I do have very good hearing.

nitus103748d ago

Somehow I don't think we will see a PS5 or get more details till 2018 with a possible launch in November 2019. Of course if Microsoft tries to steal an early march with their next XBox then Sony won't have much choice.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose22d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE22d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername21d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy22d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde21d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8621d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8621d ago (Edited 21d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300022d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle21d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
